    "The amount of support ... I can't wrap my head around it."
    Well... For years you've been promoting cleaning up our rooms. Carrying the heaviest load we can bear. Helping people find purpose in what can seem a very hopeless world. You tell people to learn to live with the world that is and that nobody is perfect but to strive for the best they can manage. You advocate for people to be the kind of person who help their family through their father's funeral.
    When you point people in the direction of becoming good people don't be surprised when they'll support and defend you.
    All the best from Australia!

      Peterson has given the direction that many have not received from their fathers. This only proves that we each have that innate need, and how important mentors and parents are, even to adults.

      You know what's bonkers? I've never been a huge fan of Peterson even though I appreciate his content, I don't see him as an idol. But one day when I heard a colleague say "he is one of the most dangerous men in america" I could not fucking believe my ears. How can the woke see that way someone that inspires words like yours. • @CelticSpiritsCoven
      @CelticSpiritsCoven 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people won't be good when you honestly attempt to encourage them.
      You have to reach for the pinnacle. "Encouraging" isn't the top. It's best to aim to the highest.

    • @isaacislaughter
      @isaacislaughter 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I also am touched by that.
      My biggest take away from this lovely talk was to be more encouraging to those around me. it's true that some people won't accept it, or worse, will take it as condescension, but sometimes encouragement hits the mark. At those times it can be incredibly important to the recipient. I think that makes it worth the cost of those other awkward moments.

    • @TheHulksMistress

      I totally understand why he reacts that way, I think. I grew up around a lot of tragedy in my life, and it really does take a huge toll. Makes the world seem an extremely difficult and cruel place to exist in. So I can't imagine how tough it is for him after hearing the thousands of stories of immense suffering he's heard.
      Which is so ironic. All the people who label him as something malicious and cruel. He is the ONE person who knows what real suffering and it's effects look like. I guess that's what can confuse some people. That he's seen what can FIX suffering, and it isn't just patting someone on the back and saying "you're fine as you are"

    • @RCCarDude
      @RCCarDude 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not to be reductive but my brilliant wife puts it like this: women nurture, men encourage. I think we're at an impasse where we've denigrated what men can do for society, and when people get a taste of what it could/should be like again, they're overcome with emotion.

    Mr Peterson gets teary eyed when he speaks of all those people that came to him and told him he was the light in their darkest hours of their life. He was thankful to be able to help but also had to bear the extremely heavy burden of realising that so many, soooo many people were so desperate for any form of encouragement and not getting one bit of it.
    The fact that realising this was a heavy burden for him, to me, speaks volumes about the gigantic heart this man has for his fellow man (and woman) and of his character. I seriously believe mr Peterson is a very special person in these times and i would not be surprised if he gets public, mainstream recognition for his help and work long after he has passed on. And i think it is barely short of a crime how this man and his family have been treated.
    It is fortunate for us all that we can see and experience this pearl of a man today. I also sincerely hope he can deal with his demons and wish him all the best for himself and his family.

      @@PaperGrape I don't know him personally, but I do know some people with similarly high IQ. And the one thing they have in common is that they wouldn't stop until they understand something, even if it takes months of study.
      Peterson studied Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia together with an enormous range of fiction about the human darkness and how ordinary people turn to the dark side.
      But as far as I know Peterson is also a Christian (so his god tells him to be a good person) and he is definitely trying to be a nice person (maybe he just is). And it's exhausting to cope with the contradiction between studying darkness yet being a nice guy. Especially if you are prone to depression, which is genetic (so there's nothing you can do).
      Anyway, it's good he gets all the help he needs and has a nice family and good friends. Could be worse.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that we just got to witness the true interaction between these two greats as if they were there in person and we were a fly on the wall. There was no trace of fakeness that many conversations on camera would have. This was as authentic and real as they come. Hats off to both Dr. Peterson and Dr. Weinstein for recording this and for being so forthright and unfiltered.

      Me too. I think for the same reasons as Jordan. I have a lot of people, particularly kids, but parents of kids too who are awe stricken I think, to encounter a person who they don't necessarily know right away, who genuinely wants the absolute best for them, and their children. Even at the risk of incredible personal cost. Its the reason people are awe stricken which can be horribly tragic. Jordan lays it out well. They have never seen or received real encouragement... Consequently they can find it difficult to properly encourage their own children, even though that is desperately want they want. (starting to cry myself now). Anyway, the tears come from the real personal encounters for me. Both positive tears and negative tears at the same time for me... How about you, cheeckymunki6?

    Jordan Peterson may have been having a particularly tough day when interviewing Bret. It was an outstandily interesting conversation, but what really struck me has how Bret was so skillful in supporting Jordan when he was struggling. He acknowledged Jordan's challenges without nursing his pain; Bret showed much understanding to Jordan's plight yet reminded him of his past achievements and encouraged him to keep working at it. Bret is a deeply compassionate and blindly intelligent man. So many of us would do well to be a bit more like Bret and Jordan so they are not shouldering so much of the fight.

      Jordan is gifted in several ways and he has blessed us and the world by developing those gifts and sharing their fruits. With gifts/abilities come burdens as you point out. One of Jordan's most highly developed gifts is empathy. It really struck me early in this conversation when he was tearing up and speaking about all the pain in the world. He spoke of the desperation in people to find encouragement. It is hard to explain the experience of feeling someone else's pain to someone who has not had that experience themselves. The thing is that Jordan is feeling the pain of 1000's of people that he met and connected with in person. I know what it is like to experience this on a scale of 10 maybe 20 people at most. Even at that level it was often confusing and overwhelming. Where does my own pain end and the pain of other people begin? Is this pain I am feeling mine or someone elses? I can not begin to imagine what it would be like to feel that pain on the scale that JP has. I wish I could somehow take some of this burden from him and carry it as a friend would do for a friend. I pray that he will find peace and that he will find freedom from this heavy burden he carries. It is too much for one man in my opinion. This may be a factor in his physical crisis. I wonder if he has tried meditation as a practice before. I know from experience how powerful a mindfulness meditation practice can be. I think it would be very beneficial to JP. Anyway, I pray that God blesses him and his family and that they find peace and freedom in their lives.
