Tons of great slide guitarists out there... But nobody out there has or produces the tones that Derek does. Maybe Ry Cooder, but he still comes up short in my eyes. The tone , man. His fucking tone is unmatched. Unparalleled.
This, to me, is a pretty close definition of having "soul". That dude Loves and probably even lives to play that guitar, and he's one of the lucky few to "master" it. We're quite lucky when folks lime him decide to share their gift with us.
I've listened to this solo performance for probably 8 years now and every single fucking time I am speechless and blown away. This version of the solo must never go away. Bless whoever filmed this
That's an impossible claim for anyone to make, very subjective. But Derek is really really good, he has a good ear and knows how to produce a fantastic tone. That much cannot be denied
To say Derek is a masterful slide guitar player doesn't really describe this performance... He plays slide guitar with the kind of devotion, sensitivity and wisdom of an oracle. He "left it all on stage" with this soulful and inspired performance and the world seems like a better place to me now. Thank you Derek. ;)
This is the best version of this solo I can find. It's always incredible, but Derek really found the lyrics in this one. Flawlessly executed. Pure soul.
Totally agree. Does anyone know if the full song is anywhere on YT? If he was on fire I'm betting the rest of the band were too. I've tried to find it but no luck.
Is this the most beautiful guitar solo of all time? It’s not my genre, I don’t play slide, but I keep coming back to this vid and my heart melts every single time. Just gorgeous!
I've heard countless thousands of the best guitar solos from most of the best guitarists of all time and I can confirm that this is just ridiculous and stupidly beautiful.
Seeing tedeschi trucks band live in Charlotte for 35 bucks was insane looking back... almost all of my friends have never heard of them... I feel sorry for them, Derek trucks slays. I mean he used to jam with the greatest of all time(John frusciante) and John Mayer ...
Don't feel bad. I had never heard of the band before and was given free tickets to see them at the Paramount Theater in Seattle. They started out with "Everybody's Talkin' " and I thought great, this is fun. Then, without a break, they morphed into this song and I sat there for the rest of the concert crying. I could not stop. They are one of those rare bands that sound better live than they do in the studio. I have only seen two concerts in my life that had as much impact and one of those was Queen doing "Night at the Opera" album while I was tripping. :) The other was Genesis doing "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway".
Man, where have I been under a rock. I never even heard of this guy before just happen to come across “DEREK TRUCKS” on the Internet, this solo just took me on a trip out of this world. He feels what he is playing on that guitar and has mastered the connection to slowly immerse you in the solo and then bring you back to reality. I AM A NEW FAN.

Carlos Santana introduced me to Derek & Susan and truth be told, I've had "Midnight at Harlem" playing, 'DJ Loop' for over five/six consecutive days now including a week of graveyard shift (45 hours). i'm addicted badd, and don't desire to listen to anything/anyone else. Something wrong with me? A much needed soul cleansing for me each time. I admit/confess I've become a sappy old bat. I feel forgiven. He's just the best...Every rare once in a while, comes a very special artist, that not only had extraordinary skills but has this ability to touch the human heart with his Art. This is it. Like BB KING said...This is as good as i ever heard it. Great band!
I swear this almost brings me to tears every time I hear it. It’s like a life moving from melancholy/exhaustion to overcoming, then finally triumph. Insane feeling in this solo.
Any person who can take a piece of wood with strings on it and move your emotions like this is one in a billion and that is Derek Trucks personified. He has honored Duane Allman in such a way by expanding upon what he invented!! Derek Trucks is the BEST slide player living and right there with Duane all time!!
Wife heard this solo for the first time live, when I looked over she had tears in her eyes, she said the emotion she felt coming from Derek’s playing was overwhelming.
I saw him when he was 15 and knew he was special. He has become one of the Top 3 guitarists and probably the best slide ever. He makes it look so easy. I’m going to see Tedeschi -Trucks tonight in Macon. Can’t wait.
I love the pure look of contentment on his face. He isn't making crazy faces, he isn't drawing attention to himself, all the focus is on the love and joy of the tone. He loves what he is doing and he is just having fun. The guy is such a humble beast. I wish more people had the passion about the music that he does, he is one of the true greats both for his talent, and for his attitude.
@@mikekoenig6467 you say that, but nearly every single face I make while playing is involuntary, and the same can be said for almost everyone I know that plays

This is one of the greatest solos I've ever heard. It really puts the spirit in you, like gospel does. It's probably the only solo that makes me want to jump up, praise God, and cry... and I'm agnostic. LOL
WOAH, this is my 1st time experiencing Mr. Trucks... I went searching for satisfying guitar slides and have clearly found one of the best. ❤🎉 Bravo, sir!!
I just love that Mr Trucks can take an awesome solo for 3 minutes that is totally within the flow of the song and actually adds to it. So many guitar solos have little or nothing to do with the song being played.
One of the many things I love about Derek is that he transcends style. Not rock, not blues, not jazz, but all of these and none of these and something completely unique. Love to watch and hear him play.
That note at 1:17 gave me major ASMR chills all the way through the note at 2:28 which felt like every cell in my body released a deep breath. Derek's playing really makes you feel the spiritual and emotional importance of music in our lives. What a great solo with perfect phrasing and timing! - opening with a mere whisper, then with perfectly placed notes ascends smoothly to a crescendo peak that delivers pure and raw emotion from the heart.
This brings an emotional awakening inside my soul. At 1:20, it becomes more than music. It soars to an indescribable level of elation that tells me it won't be easy, but I'm going to be okay.
I've been told that the pinnacle of musicianship is the ability to play whatever is inside your head, but i would disagree with that statement and argue to say that whatever in your heart/soul is much more important, Derek trucks just validated that comment with this solo.
To use Derek's own words from his Rick Beato interview, "....sometimes you can't get at sounds you hear in your head..." Well, he got there on this night x1000. If you watch the full performance, you can see how even Susan is profoundly and emotionally moved like the rest of us.
For those of you stumbling here for your first time with not much experience with Derek Trucks, I strongly recommend you listen to the whole song (Midnight in Harlem) if you haven’t already. Can’t go wrong with Tedeschi Trucks; any version will do.
I don‘t know if Derek is the best slide player ever. What i know for sure : he is an otherworldly musician , it‘s what he communicates through his instrument, which makes him so unique and where not many can touch him
Derek Trucks has to be one of the pinnacles of guitar playing of all time. His solos are pure emotion, they create a knot on my throat every single time.
Had the good fortune to hear this live at Ravinia in 2012 in the midst of an awesome storm! It was magical and unique! Definitely one of my favourite solos. And Susan's singing that song is just the very best!
