The kid finished playing and my friend said something like, wow that kid did a really awesome job playing guitar, what is he like 12 yrs old? We didn't know he would become "the" Derek Trucks one day. Thanks for the upload, great memory of great times!
Its pretty much happened a while ago, i don't normally believe in competitive titles within music, but with Derek his playing is so emotional and moving. I love all sorts of music, and other slide players but he is the best living player i have heard. Love this :D
Derek & susan are such humble, nice people they have they children in public schools. My daughter tells this story.. In the teachers lounge, another teacher was laughing about she had a note from Mrs. Trucks to please excuse her children for they were flying up to NYC to be on the Jay Leno show... She couldnt stop laughing... can you believe this crap...My daughter said to her...you don't know who you are talking about they are famous people. True story
Interesting thought. You might find it surprising that my long time partner, who is also from Georgia and has been playing electric and acoustic guitar since he was a kid, is now 28 and heavily influenced by the greats: Duane and Derek as well as the TRUE grandfather of slide guitar, Elmore James. He continues to grow as a slide guitarist inspired by artists like these as well as great poets with true words like Tupac. Tupac evolved out of a violent life of crime and self-destruction to share words of forgiveness and peace through his music only to be brutally murdered. But he was a rapper, too. To each their own. Just some food for thought. :)

I saw them around that same time at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta. I am his same age. I had just started playing guitar and seeing Derek play was an inspiration but at the same time it made me want to quit because I knew I would likely never be that good. It’s in his blood for obvious reasons. I thank God my parents took me to great concerts from a young age.
I don't even care. No doubt tha Duane was better technical around that time, but Derek's solo hits me right in the feels man. How a 13 year old kid can express so much through a guitar is beyond me, but this solo takes it to a whole new level imho,.

As amazing as his playing at that age are his ears, and sensitivity to the other musicians. His cues and eye contact reveal someone beyond his years as a musician.
to me, the most remarkable story from Gregg Allman's memoir was the story of when Butch took Gregg and a couple other guys from the band to see Derek play when he was 9. I've listened to this so many times, and I can never get over that he made this song his own when he was only 13.
I was there...somewhere back on the grass hill. I've seen a lot of great concerts at Walnut Creek Amphitheater and this was one of them. Came for the Allman Bros but was blown away by how talented Derek was at such a young age.
sky dog. Great! 🌟🎶❤️🤗
I was there. We were getting baked in the sun out in the lawn section, if you know what I mean. It was 4th of July, and we were stoked to see the Allman Bros. The kid finished playing and my friend said something like, wow that kid did a really awesome job playing guitar, what is he like 12 yrs old? We didn't know he would become "the" Derek Trucks one day. Thanks for the upload, great memory of great times!
So smooth but commanding..i come back to this about once a month..what a gift
He was unassuming even as a 13 year old. What a phenomenal talent and he's only gotten better, a lot better.
I love guitar shredders and everything lead guitar. Trucks is the most emotive guitarist I've ever heard.
Have you never heard of David Gilmour?
He isn’t slide, much harder
Trucks is the best slide player alive today
The boy you will someday be king of the slide.
Duane tho
+Bob Cardenaz He is. And he is freaky good.
Its pretty much happened a while ago, i don't normally believe in competitive titles within music, but with Derek his playing is so emotional and moving. I love all sorts of music, and other slide players but he is the best living player i have heard. Love this :D
He already is.
yes he is......peace
Derek & susan are such humble, nice people they have they children in public schools. My daughter tells this story.. In the teachers lounge, another teacher was laughing about she had a note from Mrs. Trucks to please excuse her children for they were flying up to NYC to be on the Jay Leno show... She couldnt stop laughing... can you believe this crap...My daughter said to her...you don't know who you are talking about they are famous people. True story
Just found this video and your comment: great story!
His dad is a roofer in Jacksonville! Still the same folks. He’s just their kid!
I know where they live. You'd think in an exclusive, gated community here in Jacksonville...but no.
Only 13 & already playing slide in a way that would put a smile on Elmore James & Duane`s faces. A young master.
I can't stop watching this. .what inspiration to all kids that are learning to play
too bad the inspiration for todays kids are rappers with their pants all the way down.
lol
Yeah and out of every 20 billion kids that play.. one MIGHT be ALMOST this good. Yay fun!!
So dereck just made me throw my slide across the room.
I have seen this video at least 20 times over the years and it always makes me smile. It's perfect on so many levels.
i was sitting in the front row in Raleigh and remember it like it was yesterday.. Awesome Show and Derek coming out doing his solo was off the charts!!! Pure Talent flows in his veins!!!!!....
13 years old in this video and already the "kid" is an old soul on the guitar. He's my personal favorite slide player these days.
ya I hope to see his band when they come to KC soon
He was a GOAT before he could legally drive.
His tone, tuning and soul are just amazing. He blows the other guy away on sheer originality.
It's amazing at such a young age Trucks could put out such emotions in music you'd only think someone that went through the throes of maturity could.
Derek is just a kid here, and he's channeling Duane Allman. Simply amazing!
Holy Shit! What a joy to revisit the Allman Bros and further with this guy. He is Phenomenal and it makes me happy all over again to hear the old and the new. What a Gift! Thank You
Good gawd, he's just a child playing with the soul of an old man. It's not even remotely fair to the rest of us that try but fail.Did Dwayne come back in this young body?
John Buffaloe Duane*
***** thats correct as Derek is obsessed with vocal phasing and brings it into his slide playing (just like Susan's voice) hence why he also likes the sitar
***** Like Masterkeef420 said... It's Duane... Not Dwayne.
Yeah we've been there and done that, but thanks for playing.
John Buffaloe I think he was Duannes love child! lol
This is just absolutely incredible, very inspirational for young guitarist like myself.
Never really appreciated the guitar as much until this moment. So beautiful
I've watched this so many times .... but I can never get enough....
Derek had his thing together at 13 years old, incredible, a true gift from God.
Except for the guitar talent, Derek Trucks is essentially every kid who lived in the southeastern US in 1993 with that Atlanta Braves ball cap.
Chipper Jones man! Bringing me back!
WCWRULES4LYF One of his relatives was a professional baseball player.
WCWRULES4LYF He's born, raised and still lives in Jacksonville, FL
Virgil Trucks played for thee Detroit Tigers, 1940's and 50's. Two no hitters in the same season.
As far west as Oklahoma. I was a Braves fan mostly because of TBS. Back in the Dale Murphy days.
1993, and already the best slide player.
forget about duane?
I don't even care. No doubt tha Duane was better technical around that time, but Derek's solo hits me right in the feels man. How a 13 year old kid can express so much through a guitar is beyond me, but this solo takes it to a whole new level imho,.
Nah Duane is above all. But trucks is the bets on the planet.
Derrick is great, but I'm sorry he can't carry Dickies case
@@TheRogerKyle They are all great in their own ways, that's why there's thousands of good rock bands, not three or four.
Some nights, I sound exactly like this. Then I wake up.
😂❤
The kid was a prodigy; the man even more rare- talent realized and improved upon..
I'm 34 and I've been a legit fan for about half my life. I love classic rock and always will, and this dude is a representation par excellence for my generation.
i guess he's gotten "better" in the ensuing years but it's pretty much all there in 1993
AMAZING.. so gifted, blows my brain & heart 💕🎶💕🎶💕
That moment when Derek Trucks is outshining the hell out of you, so you fake technical difficulties and run off the stage never to be seen or heard from again.
The-Art-of-Guitar I'm 33 and just bought my first guitar...I should return it while I still can😥
don G No way! Don’t return it man, just play!
@@dong4176 it's never too late! I've had a guitar since I was 10 but never really learned it properly until 10 years after. It can get frustrating at times but so worth it when you see how far you've come
Lmfao
I saw Derek brought on as a special guest with Los Lobos in Tucson, AZ circa 2001-2002 After a little bit of the song the lead guitarist just walked over to amp and pulled out his guitar chord from speaker and then just turned and pointed to young Derek indicating he cant compete
makes me wanna throw my guitar away
+Curtis Moffett hahaha you all so funny dudes
+Curtis Moffett lol
Lets start a band!
Makes me wanna play everyday
Reminds me of what Clapton said when he first heard Hendrix. Something about going back to his day job.
I was there at this concert at Walnut Creek amphitheatre in Raleigh NC! I was in the VIP box seats, and was totally amazed by Derek Trucks! His uncle was playing the drums right behind him! Bruce Trucks was and is an awesome drummer! Seen the tedeschi trucks band and he still rock's! So does Susan!
He has so much emotional articulation that he channeled into his music at such a young age. Hats off.
As amazing as his playing at that age are his ears, and sensitivity to the other musicians. His cues and eye contact reveal someone beyond his years as a musician.
I know, he hits the pitches with no hesitation or slop, across multiple strings, amazing for a kid of that age.
Wow.
Possibly the Best slide in rockin blues style in the universe...still can't believe my eyes and ears WOW.He is still amazing in any performance .
Nice Duane Allman Skydog t-shirt. I'm pretty sure no one else in his 8th grade class had one ha ha : )
His dad was in the Allman Brothers, no?
William Houston his uncle was
His dad I believe was there drummer
@@bergy2005 no it was his uncle
His dad was Butch Trucks, and he was the drummer for the Allman Brothers Band.
to me, the most remarkable story from Gregg Allman's memoir was the story of when Butch took Gregg and a couple other guys from the band to see Derek play when he was 9. The skills are there even at this young age. His skills have gotten better. But here's one thing you can't teach. The soul of his playing is there in spades. What a special talent.
He had his eyes closed playing that all by feel at the age of 13... wow
I noticed that and thought he already had it
I am by no means any where close to Derek but when I'm feeling it, I play better with my eyes closed. Just don't ask me to play it twice.
Derek's Schoolyard Buddy: Hey Derek last night I played video games and stayed up past my bedtime! What did YOU do?
Derek: Ahhh, you know, just played to a packed house with the Allman Bros.
LOL!
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 not even half full, but ok
When your soul has the blues but your face has the greys. Not a single facial muscle moved the entire time he played lmao. Makes it so much more enjoyable to watch.
When you can capture a young man’s brilliance on video for the world to see, it was a damn good day. You murdered it on that stage then, and you just keep on slaying it today brother. 👏 🎸
WHY HAVE I NOT HEARD MORE OF DEREK TRUCKS UNTIL NOW
Check out Tedeschi Trucks Band on you tube! They kick ads! Just give them a listen. You'll love them!
There are only a few vids I see every year that just make me wanna quit playing and this is up there. Lord have mercy talk about foreshadowing.
As an angel has got a guitar, fallen on us and telling us what heaven sounds like.
That boy wiped the floor.
Sounds as sweet as an angel.
God bless Derek.
Amazing ...really Amazing
Derek Trucks is a Really cool Player
really amazing but seriously i need help someone help me
Wonder if Susan Tedeschi was in the crowd saying "when you turn 18....."
Gavin Brown bruh 😂😂😂😂
Haha yea and she's like 33 haha
Lmao I was thinking the same thing.
That lucky bastard!!! I'm so jealous!!
Grrrrooming him with applause
Even if your don’t like this kind of music how can 289 people give this a thumbs down?!
RIP "SkyDog" Duane Allman: Best slide guitarist the world has ever known.... gone, but never forgotten!
until he was reincarnated into a man we now know as Derek Trucks
i just came to say i ve seen u reply things on different videos and always love seeing the 3d charlie brown pic u have. and yes, skydog was the man.
Ya know... After Hurricane Andrew that hit South Florida in 1992 there was this torn up bar alongside the Turnpike that the locals dragged in Generators and had like 5 bands over a week end to raise money for the locals. ( Bush didnt show up 4 this disaster either !) Well... I saw Derek Trucks play there. I was there the whole weekend in the back of my Pick up camper shell. I was blown away by this "KID" at the time. I knew he was somebody's reincarnation back then.
....GAWD am I old !
I remember Derek Trucks being talked about in Florida when I was there wish I could have seen him heard him in a radio though awesome
He grow up an became the best slide Player of all the time.🎸
He was as good at 13 as he is now. This guy was born with a gift.
I could listen to this all the time he is incredible! The best slide EVER!
He's got skydog (duane) on his shirt, love it, playing homage to duane.
damn right
good song choice too. homage to duane 2x
First thing l noticed also.
I want that shirt!
@@J__C__ me too, maybe next christmas
I have immense respect for people who can play with a calm face
Derek was tremendous even then. That “boy” is still jammin’ now. Five star!!!!!
I saw him play when he was this age and he slayed it.
Right around 1:45 he completely transcends the instrument and plays past the frets. Like the other comments said, a true prodigy.
On the 50th anniversary of Dwayne passing I couldn't have listened to a better song today than watching Derek play that
All hail to the TH-cam algorithm recommending this once a year to me!
