  • Can Ashes of Creation Pull Off Large Scale PVP with NO LAG???? Performance is something that Intrepid has promised for a long time. With the complexity of Ashes, I think it will be difficult to pull off, but not impossible.

One thing to note, Intrepid actually hired some of the old Planetside 2 devs, specifically to help with the huge battles. That gives me a lot of confidence they can actually pull this off.

      That's excellent!

Whoa whoa whoa, we need to give them credit before they pull things off. Didn’t you see? They’ve already solved Botting.

Im not 100% up to date, how have they solved botting? We can gank them, but then we get corruption right?

@@ozijak oh sorry that was more of a tongue in cheek comment about my click-bait-ish Botting video title where I said they’ve solved Botting. They have done a lot on that front though.

It is good that they are working on that from the very beginning, just like a lot of things. Gives them a much better chance for success, then when devs last minute start to think of certain things.

I've played Planetside 2, and joined those extremely large scale battles. It does become a slideshow game when you actually get into the big conflict. It just becomes a giant explosion fest around the capture points and the faction who dies the least amount to said explosions wins the objective. If you stay to the smaller skirmish locations, it is totally manageable though, but when everyone collapses to one, it becomes unplayable. Similar to the New world Dilemma, but could easily house a lot more people in one area before it got to that point.
Time Dilation in Eve Online also is a different goal than what Ashes of Creation is aiming for.
They aren't necessarily apples to apples comparisons. However, I am interested about the T&L large scale battle. the snippet you put up looked very promising and matches what Ashes wants to accomplish.

I think it is plausible that Intrepid, given enough time, can produce a workable back end solution that solves many of the networking issues they face. However, given the state they are in now -- struggling with 70 players on a server -- versus the state that the community has come to expect that they will be in -- multiple thousands of players, bugs and all, on a server -- the likelihood that they can bridge this gap prior to September 30 must be judged to be extremely low. Granted that Intrepid has yet to specify exactly what A2 official launch will entail and has never specifically stated that A2 servers will initially accommodate any particular amount of players (all of the numbers you stated have always been the ever elusive "goals" rather than projections, and none of that information is recent), it still remains unlikely that they will launch official A2 with a severely limited scope (adding small numbers of players over time) because of the community blow back that would result. If Intrepid manages at least one large scale (multiple thousands of testers) stress test in the next sixty to ninety days, then I would give more credence to your optimism.

It is good they are implementing optimizations from the get go but there are hard limits on bandwidth and that is what typically places hard max caps on # of PvPers in an area. Things that affect this are AOE abilities, number of abilities/attacks per second, movement speed, etc.. It also usually means more off-loading of tasks onto the client = more cheats. I wish them luck but 500 v 500 is very hard with what I have seen from their combat system. Now, 250 v250 has been done with similar combat, if they get that at launch I'd be very happy since then 350 v 350 would be possibly within a year and maybe higher. This is one area I very much doubt they will achieve their goal. There's a lot to say on this, I think it is possible but takes some real know-how and not many coders have that these days as well as the time it takes to implement and test.

I have never heard Ashes of Creation is a highly ambitious MMO before so I watched it all the way through.
