Im really bad with mental character obsession. I make up characters in my head, and then if I'm not happy with them, i try to change my mental image... but it doesn't work very well.... or I get annoyed if I don't have a clear mental image of a character. OR if I see an actor or actress as the character and i don't like that actor or actress... but i can't stop thinking of them as the character. thats happened to me before too. I just get weirdly obsessive about that sometimes... i have always wondered if I'm alone on this. haha

    • @larissazingg9422
      @larissazingg9422 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

No, you are not alone with this problem. I can't finish a book if I'm not able to get a clear mental picture of (or not feeling a connection to) at least the main character. Also I hate it if I'm unable to envison the world a story is taking place in. It's like trying to board an airplane to an amazing holyday destination and not having your ticket (if that makes any sense to you?) And actors or actresses in book to movie adaptations, who do not look anything like the picture in my head are the worst!

Kaorisity I hate it when you have a mental image of the character and the actor that plays them in their movie COMPLETELY ruins it. My mental image of Sirius Black from Harry Potter was more like Snape....

IM EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE HAHA I read so quickly usually in 1 or 2 sittings bc i HAVE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS then im mad at myself for not reading slower! ESPECIALLY w series tho!! i cannot leave a world until i know every single detail of every last book in it!! I stretched out lord of shadows to 5 days tho which absolutely never happens 🤣

freeleigh I marathon series too and I prefer to read in one sitting. BUT IT'S NOT ALWAYS A GOOD THING. For example, when I'm reading in the evening/at night (as always basically) I feel like I wanna finish a book, and it ends up with me putting an all nighter. AND THE NEXT DAY FOR EXAMPLE I GO ON A TRIP IN THE MORNING. And guess what I do the next day?
      ...
Yes, you guessed right. The cycle starts over and over again. I felt this lack of sleep when I was at my grandma's house last week. I finished three books on these four days, and slept... Not a whole lot. I kinda regret that

    • @BonesandBooth92
      @BonesandBooth92 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Isabelle_ Depending on how quickly i zip thru books i usually have to read them again bc i missed so many details the first time! (i say that as if i wouldnt re-read it anyways 🤣) Or like for series i cant separate the details of each book bc the second i finished 1 i immediately picked up the next one haha

I have the book buying issue, I end up buying more when I have no room-guys I DO NOT EVEN HAVE A BOOKSHELF! Like there are times when I go into a bookshop and stand there for like ten minutes holding a book and having an internal argument with myself about whether or not it's a good idea to buy it. And I end up doing it. Most times. I need help.

It takes me SO long to finish series. I can completely relate with getting tired of being in the same world, even if you're loving it. I think this problem stems from the fact that I just have such a big variety of books that I want to read, and I want to read ALL OF THEM.

I don't have that problem of not wanting to get to the end of the book because I get antsy to finish it and see how everything ends or works out. My worst reading problem is probably spoiling myself by doing stuff I know I shouldn't do (ex: flipping to the end of a chapter to see how long it is and accidentally seeing a spoiler, checking social media when I follow people who read books I want to read, and especially checking book wikis. I got spoiled for Lord of Shadows by checking the Shadowhunters wiki because I forgot what happened in Lady Midnight and needed to refresh my memory).

Thank you for admitting that you are bad at finishing stories! I’ve always be super self conscious about it, even books that I loved, because I get distracted with another book, or more likely, youtube, instagram and you name it. Knowing that it happens to even a super reader likes you makes me feel so much better about it!

I also get these frenzies when I’m buying more books that I’m actually planning to read, but it’s ok cause I mostly buy them second hand, so the money goes to charity, and if I end up not reading it, I can donate it back, so there’s that.

I read the last few pages of a book before I start it. That way, I know how it ends and I don't have that anxiety you're talking about. If I start reading a series, and the last book is out, I'll look up the wiki to see who ends up together, who dies, etc. That settles me enough that I can read the series or book slowly, and really enjoy it, knowing that I'm already at peace with what happens at the end.

I totally can relate the following through the series. I started reading the 1st book of the mortal instruments series in 2013 and then after finished reading the first three books. I took a hiatus and started reading the 4th book until the 5th one in 2015. And now I'm sort of taking a time off for the final book. Sometimes if it's at the end of a series I take a really long time to finish it because I don't want it to be over, I do the same thing with TV shows I take forever to finish them because I want to be able to binge watch the next season later and I don't want it to be over! I just stopped in the middle of the last book of a series that I really enjoyed the world and the characters of, but I was just craving something different and I had to pick up a totally different genre. Hey Jesse!
So I seriously identify with you on the whole "getting tired of the world or hearing from the same characters even though I love them" thing... my personal solution for it is to read multiple books at once. A lot of people hate doing that, but it seriously helps me. If the one I'm reading gets too intense, or if I need a break from that world, I pick up one of the others I'm reading! Currently, I'm reading Lady Midnight, The Upside of Unrequited, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and re-reading City of Bones (with @shadowhunterbks on twitter!).
Not sure if it would be helpful for you, but it keeps me from abandoning half-read books on my tbr!

I have the same problem. I take a very long time to finish a series. But I just get distracted by other series. I also like to take my time and enjoy a series. It's usually that last book that takes the longest.

I also find myself wanting to take notes as I am reading but hardly ever do it because I don't want to stop reading and then I just forget. I am so bad at keeping up with series, I often find myself losing interest :/

I have the same problems! Especially the not finishing books, I will usually eventually finish them or at least I tell myself I will finish them, but for some reason getting past the exposition of a story makes me really anxious! Maybe I'm just worried about the characters like you are! I'm also just horrible at making time to read, or rather using my abundant free time to read instead of rewatching episodes of Friends I've seen a million times already XD And I don't understand how people take detailed notes while reading, it's a gift, I do not have it.

I’m bad at taking notes too even though I like to do it. What I do to help is keep sticky notes by me and at the end of chapters jot down things on important pages.

Jesse! I'm also bad at taking notes. Which stinks, BUT something I do (which I found is easier and takes less time) is take a picture of the text on the book with my phone camera. This is super easy and I can still come back to it later.

Im horrible at starting a series and then not picking up the next book for ages. I think I have 5 series going like that rigt now.
As for making notes for books...I keep those little novelty post-it tabs with me and when I find something of interest I grab one and set it just above the start of the part. This way I can come back to it later without taking myself away from the story. Bonus it doesnt hurt the book any.

in my opinion its good to own a lot of books that you have not read yet because you might finish a book and then not have the money to but a new one but its okay because you can just go over to your book shelf and grab something that you have been meaning to read

I’m really bad with being depressed after finishing a really good book. I remember once, I had just finished a great novel, and for a moment I was fine. And then I laid there in my bed, and I just burst into tears, because I realized that the characters aren’t real, the world isn’t real, and I’ll never be able to go on an adventure like the characters went on.
So, rah, that’s why I tend to stray from fantasy novels; it just makes me depressed because the fantasy aspects, like magic, isn’t real in our world.

I really feel you with needing a break from worlds I love. It's like "oh I'll just read a couple of other books in between each one in the series" then it's suddenly several months later and I'm ready to jump back back in and it's like "what the heck is going on". Then that just leads to unfinished series. I'm sorry Library Of Souls, I'll read you one day.

Also my misreading of the pronounciation of Chaol saved me from having the TOG series spoiled. I heard someone on BookTube mention a major moment in one of the books but assumed it was a different character and must have happened later in the series. Then I got to that part of COM and was like "That's moment sounds familiar... OH!". So your misreading may one day be a blessing.

This is really bad, but I tend to favor certain characters more than others. And it's bad, because I usually want the drama to happen to my favorite character instead of others and then I get really selfish and don't want to continue if it doesn't! Ugh, I feel so bad, but I can't help favoring one character over another!

I can totally agree on number 2. I think I am currently in the middle of 29 series and I am a slow reader as well.

I agree with your first two points, especially when it comes to series. I don't want series to end because I've grown so attached to the characters, and if I try to read a series straight through I get tired of the world for awhile and need a break.
I tend to read one or two books in a series, read something else, and then go back and read a couple more from the series. This not only helps me to stretch out the storyline, but also keeps me from growing tired of the plots in series.

I CAN NOT start another and different book when I am reading a series. I am reading City of Lost Souls right now and after I finish it I will read Clockwork Princess (so scared for that book!) I love the world so much!!! A couple days ago, I finished Clockwork Prince w/o bringing City of Lost Souls on vacation with me. I was so sad. My mom found me cradling the book and crying. Immediately she went to the book store (w/o me knowing) and got me a random book. It looked pretty good, so I told myself that I would read this, and suck it up. I got about 20 pages into it, and I put it down and waited the rest of the week to go back to TMI. You see my problem?
Now I am happily reading City of Lost Souls and love it so far!

I have the same thoughts! I often put down the book and take a deep breathe for a minute for my anxiety FOR the characters. Wether they are getting in trouble or I feel like a guy is telling his feelings to a girl who doesn't like him since it's so cringe! Ahhh

I'm sooooo over dramatic, when it comes to books. Like, for example, I cry like 15 to 30 time, when I read a story, that really takes me in (thanks Clare, Lu, Maas and many others) and it's not even a sad part, where you supposed to cry (well I cry, when it comes to that anyways...). And I also scream a lot.
