    I recently started trying StoryGraph and I like it so much! My only issues are that there isn’t much of the community options the way there are in Goodreads (book clubs, lists, quizzes, the ability to ask authors questions) and it has a much smaller audience which means it lacks in reviewers. Other than that, I’m really enjoying it (especially the UI, it’s so much better and more up to date)

    On the story graph users can make up reading challenges (not just based on number of books read) which anyone can join. Would be cool if you came up with one and everyone here could join and follow along. The reading challenge feature also tracks all the books which people submit to each prompt so you can start to see a little categorised library of what everyone's reading

    I started using this in beta and kinda was like eh at first because it wasn't great, still under development, etc. but now that there are more users, more books uploaded, it's so worth it. So many more options for categorizing, sorting your TBR, adding trigger warnings, etc. And Goodreads just promos the same problematic authors over and over on their main page. Also the founder Nadia Odunayo is amazing and really took user needs into account when creating and editing the app.

    I love how Storygraph has this individual compiled statistics of the pages read, pace, moods and star ratings for the months. It makes my inner nerd so happy. I totally appreciate the trigger/content warning that they provide, because aside from its great use to readers that want to read a book, it also made me more alert or somehow much aware on a book that I'm reading. I'm now consciously looking in for trigger/content warnings in the books that I read and list them so that I could add that when I make a review, and not forget a single one. The DNF feature was also amazing. I now only use goodreads to keep track of my friends' reading and for reading written reviews (especially rant reviews) But in terms of rating books, Storygraph is my go to app.

  • @mintedrose

    Love that more and more people are starting to use this app. Started with beta and loved it right away. If anyone of your viewers are like me and want to explore books, authors and genre they normally don’t read, I can highly recomend The Storygraph genre challange. I wanted to spread my wings outside of the fantacy genre and have loved every book I picked in that challange so far. I wanted to read more diversely in all ways possible. It is also the same reason why I like watching your videos, discover new material 😊 Sorry if I spelled anything horrible wrong.

    Thank you for telling me about The StoryGraph! I just signed up today and I'm already in love with it. It says that I prefer books that are adventurous, dark, mysterious, and medium-paced, which is based on the 1789 books that I've read on Goodreads. Their recommendations make more logical sense than Goodreads with specific reasoning. Goodreads recs always seem random to me.

    So I’m really loving StoryGraph lately. I feel like one of the things that drew people into goodreads (other than the fact that it was literally the only book review site in a social media style) were those silly flame reviews that were filled to the brim with silly gifs. I love that StoryGraph isn’t founding itself on meme reviews and the kind of survey style area ahead of the rating section that informs the tags seems to discourage people from doing things like giving substance-less written reviews. The reviews on storygraph just trend at so much higher quality. And they’ve even put on the effort implement SIMPLE UI changes that just _make sense_ like a button to see only the reviews that have text so you don’t have to sift through pages of just stars to get to something written

  • @elle.dee.
    @elle.dee. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    Storygraph looks very promising but I'll wait until it's more established to transition over to it. I want to see each book have all of (or at least as many as possible) their editions listed, and a larger userbase so ratings are more reliable.
    But ya, Goodreads' lack of progress is frustrating. It's 2021 and I still can't filter my To-Read list by genre and/or fiction/non-fiction 😑

    I am not yet on The Storygraph. However, I have read about it and checked the website and I'm considering setting up my account with it, just for the tracking and personalised recommendation which are *the game-changer* because of its specifics, if you ask me. Now, in Goodreads... it's the newsletters for me: The monthly new releases, the updates of releases of authors I follow, for season- or mood- themed lists: I like them, but I rely on more than just the Goodreads one. Also, I do not use Kindle (I use Apple Books) so the fact that it auto-syncs with Kindle does not really affect me, but that is something Storygraph can follow and work on as well as the fact that community features allows for book clubs and adding friends and group challenges.

      To the random person who liked this comment 2 months after I posted it, I'm a storygraph convert. I've almost completely stopped using Goodreads. I just go there to check monthly releases.

    I’m currently doing both goodreads and storygraph and expect to continue that way for a while probably. I love a lot of things that storygraph does, especially the trigger warnings, but one thing that made goodreads really appealing was the community aspect for me? Storygraph seems to put less of a focus on that which is fair because I know people that don’t like that part and just want to track and review books but as someone who doesn’t care for algorithm based recommendations on any platform and is mostly interested in what my friends have to say, storygraph just doesn’t give me that option yet. It’s tricky, I want to leave goodreads but I’ve tried many replacements over the past few months and so far goodreads is still the only one that has the options I actually care about. Idk I will keep updating both and see how sg develops over time

      Do you miss being able to comment on reviews? Because you should be able to see if people you follow reviewed a book, you just can't comment on it 🤔

    • @paula_rize
      @paula_rize 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MsBlulucky i do, yeah! Or having some other way to show friends I read their review. It doesn’t have to be a like option (which I know exists but you don’t get notifications for it right now and you barely notice it’s there imo) but I enjoy the interaction a lot. I’ll keep my eyes open for more possible updates though

    The only complaint I have about storygraph is it’s hard to see community reviews (the main reason I use goodreads is to read reviews). You can’t “like” helpful reviews so they just show up by date order, and there’s no way to hide spoilers

    • @MsBlulucky
      @MsBlulucky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can easily hide spoilers by wrapping them in tags like this: your spoiler text ;)

    • @Lala47362
      @Lala47362 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MsBlulucky ohh I didn’t know that thanks! I just assumed you couldn’t because every time I read the reviews they’re full of spoilers, though that is probably because reviews are not ordered by helpfulness/most likes, like in goodreads

    • @MsBlulucky
      @MsBlulucky 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Lala47362 I'm not sure hidden spoilers from GR reviews are still hidden when imported to TSG, so that might be why you see so many unhidden spoilers. But at least it's possible to hide spoilers when you write/edit your reviews in TSG

    I uploaded my info to storygraph after watching this, but I don’t think I’ll use it regularly until they improve the UI a bit. Goodreads isn’t AMAZING but it’s still more user friendly and appearing than storygraph at this point. Hopefully they improve quickly so I can kick b*zos to the curb

    And Jack just made me feel like a less terrible person for saying he's not interested in fantasy novels... I've always felt like a horrible person for that! I honestly thought I was the only avid reader who doesn't have much interest in them. Thanks Jack for making me feel better about myself.

    You didn't explore some of my favorite Storygraph features. I hope you'll do another video with them!
    - Year pages goal
    - DNF shelves, actually counting the pages of DNF towards your goals and allowing reviews
    - Reading challenges!!
    - The trigger warnings feature
    - The new "up next" feature
    - Or just the fun of filtering through your TBR and/or owned books to choose your next read.

    I use both, I like the stats and graphs of Storygraph but I don't care at all for all the pace and labelling it has, the very reason it is different from GR (I'm not a mood reader and don't use recommendations to pick a book). I miss the community element and it's still building on other languages other than English. I'm supporting it and know it's going to mold itself to suit many.
