To anyone with a big book fear problem: stop obsessing over the satisfaction of having finished many books in little time and start focusing on how much is what you read actually giving you. It's okay to not reach your reading goal because you committed to a long book that took you months if you enjoyed it through the process, it's okay to have your book number stuck because what you read requires some more time, just remember to enjoy reading and not just having something read And if you started a huge book and you're not enjoying it at all just drop it and move on, you don't have to finish every book just because you read the first 50 pages Hope this helped🖤
Honestly, it’s how my shelves are organized also, but I also don’t have as many books as Jesse. If I was at that point, I’d probably have a slightly different method.
I have mine loosely organized by genre, mostly vibes. And all the books I read as a wee little child (the ones I still own anyway) are all right next to each other, too.
To get through long books I do 3 things: 1- reward myself by reading a certain number or per chapter (ie by reading another book that's shorter or by having a snack) 2- by numbers. If you are reading a long book, make the daily goal per chapter that you think you can achieve for the day. (ie, by 5 or even one a day) 3-audiobooks. If the language used in the book makes it feel like its dragging on or you can't get into it as much, just find the audio version. Hope this helps
My tip to read big books. My teacher said that the longer the book is, the more information there is, so the more you're going to learn/experience. We generally like to think that the longer a book is, the more boring parts it will have. Or even fluff. Here's my take, the longer the book, the more detailed the world building is, and the more character development and intrigue we'll get. Like didn't we all fly through Order of the Phoenix, even if it was the longest book in the series? I am currently reading the longest book on my shelf, and it's so empowering.
I read a lot of big books and LOVE big books more than shorter books. I highly recommend tabbing the books into smaller sections. A lot of big books are often divided into parts of there are prologues/interludes (*stares at Brandon Sanderson*) or you can always buy the paperback version (they're often look smaller and shorter and less intimidating). One I have in mind is The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I have the paperback but originally read it as a hardcover - I think it's divided into several parts which makes the 800+ pages less intimidating :)
Hey Jesse! I would absolutely love to see a vlog for every acotar book! It would be so fun to see your take on them and go through the journey with you! I love all your content by the way, it’s been so great this year!
I love your videos bc they are so comforting. You're so genuine and the videos are always so creative. My best big book tip is pick up something fastpaced so it won't seem so long!
I often get the assumption that I have no life outside of books, that all I do is read and I have no other hobbies or interests. Which couldn't be further from the truth!
Fantasy is my favorite genre by far! Fantasy recommendations: *ACOTAR series was fantastic. *Strange the dreamer and it's sequel Muse of Nightmares *Shadowhunter/mortal instruments series is good, though not as good as the ACOTAR series.
Can't wait to hear how your reading has changed! People always assume I only read SFF which is half true but I read just as much literary fiction, non-fiction and many other genres x)
I think a lot of times when listening to audio books it's hard to reach for fantasy. Delving into new worlds with complex politics and multiple povs is harder to focus on and remember while multi tasking as opposed to contemporary or romance. I was never a romance reader but found myself becoming one when my reading shifted to audiobooks.
Me too! I mean the romance novel part. I usually listen to audiobooks when doing mindless things at work and I need books that don't require as much concentration. I also agree fantasy (and for me some sci fi) is hard to listen to also. I did half read/half listened to Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb and Project Hail Mary. But both of those I started as real books and was into the story by the time I switched to audio. I don't know if I could have gotten into them as audiobook exclusively.
I like hardcovers myself, however there is one problem: they tend to be expensive. I only buy them when B & N is doing their 50% off Book Haul. They haven't done one of these since the pandemic started. I am a paper back girl at heart since they are usually more affordable for me.
I'm currently going through a bad reading slump and this reading slump has been going on since January which hurts my soul 🥺 but when jessie posts, it makes me feel better and I'm edging closer to getting back into reading for months on end
First, my best friend assumes that I never read new books (that I just keep re-reading what I already have). Not true. Also, thank you for confirming my assumption that you haven’t finished ACOTAR, and I’d love a vlog for your reading the series. 🥰
2:53 YAYYYYY I'm here!!! I was struggling with that because reading had become the only thing I ever did but now that I have other things it felt a bit weird. (Though the way that I wait for each of your videos does show that reading isn't going anywhere for me.) I didn't expect you to answer that at all :DDDD
People assume that I read every day, because I read at least 200 books a year. The truth is that sometimes I go days without reading, and then read up to 6 books in one day.
Assumption about my reading life: my entire personality is based on the Simon Snow trilogy, Heartstopper, and other MlM romances. Answer: this is VERY true 🙈 Also, a tip for conquering longer books: split it into manageable chunks. Samantha Shannon suggested this to tackled Priory of the Orange Tree. The book is split into 6 parts, and if you treat each as it’s own separate book it’s easier to manage the book as a whole. Hope that makes sense 🙈
Long book advice: picture the feeling of finishing a shore book and wanting more, especially at the page numbers when it would have ended, so you can be grateful
East and West by edith pattou in my opinion is such an underrated fantasy duelolgy I love the characters so much, especially Neddy but i think you will love it! Love your vids and I think it will be cool to hear other people talk about one of my favorite books!!
My class thinks that I’m a hardcore reader that reads solely explicit torture and smut scenes and every reaction I have is when someone dies brutally. Little do they know I’m only reading fluff and tend to get flustered very easily by book characters flirting.
I recommend Sing me Forgotten by Jessica Olson. It’s a rewrite/gender reversal of Phantom of the Opera and it’s currently one of my favorite fantasy books
Thanks for the recommendation! I started writing one of those myself like almost 20 yrs ago but never finished it, so I'm definitely game to read a book like that. 🤣
I really like hardcover books myself. I feel like people think I either read everything and have no standards for what I like or if I don't read something of theirs that they like: Let's say horror books or the GOT books that I'm stupid and not a reader and I need those books explained to me. Also, I feel like if you were ok with Northanger Abbey, you would like Emma. Maybe love it if you wanted to read that.
Yay Jesse read the first book of Wheel of Time and enjoyed it!!! I read it too last year and it was great. Just got the second one recently. Super excited to get into it. Love the show too btw
How fun was this! Some friends do think I have a book buying problem. I correct them and tell them it is a storage problem, not a buying problem. Cheers!
People assume that i buy too much books for my (little and only one) bookshelf , and they say that will come the day when it won't fit anymore ! And i answer "you can always invent some space you know..." So hard to not buy a book or two every week since i am working in a bookshop. I am a addict who sells drugs you know! Sorry for the mistakes, actually french , kisses from Reunion Island
Honestly props to you for writing in English when you are not. Also I am exactly the same except that I don't work at a bookstore. But I only have one shelf but I can't stop buying books.
but now everybody has the white and I am thinking about switching to white because the books kind of stand out more on the white bookshelves, but i might just wait to see if black bookshelves become popular in like a few years before i switch to white lolll
If you read Perdido Street Station (over 850 pages) you'll have mastered big-book reading. I would suggest reading it in parts (it has seven parts) and also reading it in chunks of three to four chapters (it's incredibly dense). And if you read multiple books at the same time, to have quick and easy books to get to when you get tired of reading the big and dense book.
I have seen Cost Of Knowing, Not So Pure And Simple from Ashley (Bookishrealm), and Jessica (from Jessica Nicole Dickerson) but I saw books every now and then from your videos that I don't typically see. 😁
Even though it's a slightly longer book (approx. 600 pages, which is a longer story for me :D), I can really recommend The Forever Sea by Joshua Phillip Johnson, if you haven't read it yet (has at least one more book coming out this year, I think). The magic in the book is amazing and I got through it so quickly, because there is rarely any lull during the story. Would really love hearing your thoughts on it, as well.
I usually keep series by the same author together, then organize it by my favorites to ones I need to read XD Most of mine are paperback with a few hardback here and there. I always loved that I can put them in my purse on the go or in my hand. Not gonna lie, I have multiple copies of "The Mummy or Ramses The Damned by Anne Rice." My first copy my dad gave me for my 16th birthday and the cover tore off so I had to tape it, a copy to loan out and a copy with a pretty cover. I will admit, once you start reading romance books, you leap down that black hole.
My rumour is that people assume I've read all the books on my shelves. actually, i have 115 unread books and about 70 or so I've actually read (and reread and reread)
I think people probably assume that I have way to many books and they probably think I read only fantasy but I read a lot of classics and history! also tip for reading large books(I personally love them) listen to the audiobook it will seem less intimidating!
WHAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME: I'm just like you in some ways. I do not have any specific way of organizing my shelves. It's just "all vibes" to me. But I still wanna try organizing according to the author's surname!! Love ya videos Jesse!! :D
I identify with many of these! Especially not reading around people I know, but mostly because I'm anticipating being interrupted and so I can't focus on the book.
How I bust the big book intimidation for my students: get a sticky note (put it inside the cover) & write out a realistic (based on the reader) portion of the book for the next 5-7 days (by chapters, pages, etc.). Have them put a check mark after each successful date, & watch their confidence bloom like a proud parent. Simple, effective, empowering.
So the buying books because of the covers one has made me think that a video of 'Books I bought because the cover was pretty' where you talk about how pretty the cover is and then discuss whether the story lives up to it, could be fun.
One rumor people have about my reading life is I don't finish have of the books I get, which would have been true a couple years ago, but I gotten somewhat better of buying books and finishing those before buying anymore
People always assume that when I recommend them a book I want them to read instantly. When really I read something I thought they'd enjoy and I'm letting them know in case they haven't heard of it.
Omg, I’m here really early this time 😅 So maybe you’ll notice my comment, Jesse. Thank you for your content. I feel like my life really sucks right now but your videos always make me feel better. Thanks 💛
If you're looking for drama and a rollercoaster read then I highly recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. It has Drama, murders, scams, a sprinkle of fantasy and obviously lots of lies! The audiobook is amazing so if anyone is a little daunted by a longer book it's a great sub. Locke reminds me of a younger Jack Sparrow 😄
Oooooh which manga are you planning to pick up? Assumptions hmmmm maybe that I’m a primary fantasy reader which is true but I have the little known caveat that I need romance (or two characters that I can ship unabashedly) in my books
If you need a book to get back to fantasy I'd higly recommend Prisoner of Ice and Snow by Ruth Lauren. It's a smooth and fast paced read and a little light on the fantasy elements! I loved it a lot
I honestly was keeping very low expectations for the Percy Jackson tv show but then I heard the production designer who worked on Lord of the Rings is also working on this show soooo I have much higher hopes now
Ohhh I think that peopple definitely assume that reading books makes me very "smart", and that every book has intellectual insights. While obviously you can glean insights from almost every book, I don't regard significant difference in reading or watching kdramas or watching anime most of the time; they're all stories and I will probably scream at the characters either way. Though looking at symbols on a page and creating worlds in your mind does have a charm of itself that nothing ever beats.
I highly recommend Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames, they're generally fun, but not without their heart-wrenching moments And of course, anything by Tamora Pierce is great!
Also something I have been known to do and sometimes feel quilty about is hiw many books in english I read. English is not my first language and my country is nowhere near associated with it but the books are less expensive when they are not translated. And just the fact that reading is the sole reason of my english getting better and my love for it too. I do like to read a book or two in my language when I can :) eventhough the translation can sometimes be cringy xD
People probably do assume that I buy too many books. But I actually don't. I have a lot of rules about book buying, like no more than four books a month, and if a book is above a certain price then it counts as two or three or even four depending on how expensive it is. I don't buy books from authors if I have an unread book by them on my shelf. I only buy the first book in a series and I'll buy the second when I read the first. I don't buy second editions of my books. And that is only a sample of my rules. I have so many. But when you have these kinds of rules, it makes you plan out what books you are going get, how many books you will walk away with during any trip to the store, and so on. And at the moment I am happy with the books I have, and I am only buying the sequel to series that I decided that I will continue, and books that I do really want and am really excited for. As in read immediately kind of excited. There are some downsides to these rules, like for example it makes buying novellas and poetry collections a little harder, even though I love them, because I am constantly comparing prices to other books I want. Even if I am sure I'd love it, it still feels like a gamble because of the price. Also, people probably assume I am hard on myself and that I need to chill. They will be correct there.
jesse!!!! you're not leaving booktube any time soon, right? I saw a post you made on your 10 year anniversary that had my eyebrows raised. of course if it's time, it is time but i'm just curious.
To anyone with a big book fear problem: stop obsessing over the satisfaction of having finished many books in little time and start focusing on how much is what you read actually giving you. It's okay to not reach your reading goal because you committed to a long book that took you months if you enjoyed it through the process, it's okay to have your book number stuck because what you read requires some more time, just remember to enjoy reading and not just having something read
And if you started a huge book and you're not enjoying it at all just drop it and move on, you don't have to finish every book just because you read the first 50 pages

“Just vibes” organization is the best way to describe my own form of organization I’ve ever heard 😂 like it’s chaos but it’s controlled chaos.
I find audiobooks and ebooks can make longer books less intimidating. Probably because I can't see how much of a doorstop I'm getting into.
Same! Sometimes I’m shocked at how fast a book goes by on my e-reader without holding all those physical pages.
Yeah I totally agree
To get through long books I do 3 things: 1- reward myself by reading a certain number or per chapter (ie by reading another book that's shorter or by having a snack)
2- by numbers. If you are reading a long book, make the daily goal per chapter that you think you can achieve for the day. (ie, by 5 or even one a day)

"I'm not able to read as many books as I do without audio books, I'm a full time multi tasker."
RELATABLE 🤝🏻
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett might not be completely mindless and it’s more urban fantasy-ish, but I would still recommend it! 😁
I'm reading it right now, and it's SO GOOD.
Too many tangents for me😅 but if someone liked Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy as a child, I would recommend Good Omens to them
How to read a long book: Break up pages into sections that you can fill out/check off! (the more intimidating the book, the smaller the sections)
Yes please do ACOTAR reading vlogs!! I’m so excited to see your journey with this series!
your comments on the pjo show sum it up perfectly my reaction to any bits of news are usually just keyboard smashes lol
Watched Jesse with my kitten and she was entertained! 😂 Please do ACOTAR videos! I still need to finish the series myself lol.
Fantasy is my favorite genre by far! Fantasy recommendations:

*Shadowhunter/mortal instruments series is good, though not as good as the ACOTAR series.

7:04 heyy wasn't expecting mine to make it in 😂😂 but, he most certainly loves his sprayed edges lol
spill the tea jesse sPILL THE TEAAA
Audiobooks is where it's at! I got into audiobooks two years ago and haven't looked back. Glad to hear that you also have a love for audiobooks.
Wheel of Time is SO worth it, and may break your big book anxiety! I’m currently on book 6 and LOVE the series so far!
I'm currently going through a bad reading slump and this reading slump has been going on since January which hurts my soul 🥺 but when jessie posts, it makes me feel better and I'm edging closer to getting back into reading for months on end

It did make sense
Thank you for the tip!
Have a nice day🤗
I’d love to see a vlog series on ACOTAR! I’d love to hear your thoughts on them!
Long book advice: picture the feeling of finishing a shore book and wanting more, especially at the page numbers when it would have ended, so you can be grateful
For reading bigger books, I usually just listen to the audiobooks! It helps me feel less intimated because I’m not LOOKING at a big book.
East and West by edith pattou in my opinion is such an underrated fantasy duelolgy I love the characters so much, especially Neddy but i think you will love it! Love your vids and I think it will be cool to hear other people talk about one of my favorite books!!
Your videos always make me happy! Thanks for the good vibes ✨✨✨🌌
My class thinks that I’m a hardcore reader that reads solely explicit torture and smut scenes and every reaction I have is when someone dies brutally. Little do they know I’m only reading fluff and tend to get flustered very easily by book characters flirting.
Hope you’re doing well!!!! Just finished golden boys and loved it!!!
now this is gonna be ✨️spicy✨️
I naturally watch videos on 2x, forgot how fast you naturally spoke and I swear my brain just broke.
I really like hardcover books myself. I feel like people think I either read everything and have no standards for what I like or if I don't read something of theirs that they like: Let's say horror books or the GOT books that I'm stupid and not a reader and I need those books explained to me. How to read longer books: read them as ebooks! Or listen to them as audiobooks with the speed cranked up.
My bookshelves are organized in the just vibes organization method, too.
People asume I read all the time, when in reality I have trouble dedacating myself to a book and finishing it.
People assume that i buy too much books for my (little and only one) bookshelf , and they say that will come the day when it won't fit anymore !
And i answer "you can always invent some space you know..."
So hard to not buy a book or two every week since i am working in a bookshop.
I am a addict who sells drugs you know!
Sorry for the mistakes, actually french , kisses from Reunion Island
Honestly props to you for writing in English when you are not. Also I am exactly the same except that I don't work at a bookstore. But I only have one shelf but I can't stop buying books.
I have black booshelves because you got black booshelves in like 2014 loll and i loved them as well
but now everybody has the white and I am thinking about switching to white because the books kind of stand out more on the white bookshelves, but i might just wait to see if black bookshelves become popular in like a few years before i switch to white lolll
I recommend Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames. It is slightly bigger but all a fun romp
Acotar reading vlogs from Jesse? HELL YESSS! We need those vlogs💙
Yes to the ACOTAR reading vlog! I think it will be a lot of fun.

Jesse is so precious and must be protected at all cost! ❤
I wanna see the whole pie 🥺
Jesse is just the best with everything he does 🥰✨✨
I have seen Cost Of Knowing, Not So Pure And Simple from Ashley (Bookishrealm), and Jessica (from Jessica Nicole Dickerson) but I saw books every now and then from your videos that I don't typically see. 😁
Jesse, your videos are always brightening my day. Thank you! Can’t wait to see you going blonde :))
I'd love to see acotar reading vlogs - I have yet to start the series too and need some motivation to do so!!!!!

I want to read some books . And i wish i want to read a book that protogonist is a history student . And how she or he going through it ..
People assume I only read romance books and that I hate self-help books and it’s not true at all 😑 haha! I’m loving your content Jesse :)
Yaaass i would love indvidual vlogs on every acotar book and to hear ur thoughts on it
I think people probably assume that I have way to many books and they probably think I read only fantasy but I read a lot of classics and history! also tip for reading large books(I personally love them) listen to the audiobook it will seem less intimidating!
I think you’d like The House In The Cerulean Sea (if you haven’t already read it!) It’s wholesome af. I love it.
WHAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME:
I'm just like you in some ways. I do not have any specific way of organizing my shelves. It's just "all vibes" to me. But I still wanna try organizing according to the author's surname!!
Love ya videos Jesse!! :D

I "deal"with longer books by reading a shorter/more light-hearted books when I get stuck/intimidated by how much I have left.... if that makes sense?😂
I do the same thing!
Yes ACOTAR vlogs!!!
Thanks 💛

Assumptions hmmmm maybe that I’m a primary fantasy reader which is true but I have the little known caveat that I need romance (or two characters that I can ship unabashedly) in my books
Good to hear you liked the first Wheel of Time book!
To read a big book you can read the ebook and turn off the progress thingy/time left, there’ll be no reminder of how big it is
If you need a book to get back to fantasy I'd higly recommend Prisoner of Ice and Snow by Ruth Lauren. It's a smooth and fast paced read and a little light on the fantasy elements! I loved it a lot
This was a cute and fun idea Jesse! Looking forward to seeing more fun bookish content😁😁
I laughed so much at the "just vibes" method, because that´s me!!!! Great video.
Yesss Acotar vlogsss
For fun fantasy Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. He is my favorite.
I honestly was keeping very low expectations for the Percy Jackson tv show but then I heard the production designer who worked on Lord of the Rings is also working on this show soooo I have much higher hopes now
I also use the just vibes method haha it works great for me
Ohhh I think that peopple definitely assume that reading books makes me very "smart", and that every book has intellectual insights.
Yesss to ACOTAR vlogs! I truly want to see Jesse’s reaction to it hahaha
Non readers see me carrying a big book and immediately think I am some sort of genius or future scholar lol.
Buddy reads helped me conquer my fear of big books! This was good fun :)
I highly recommend Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames, they're generally fun, but not without their heart-wrenching moments
And of course, anything by Tamora Pierce is great!
Yesssss plss do reading vlogs for the acotar series! I sooooo wanna see ur reactions lol
Yessss ACOTAR vlogssss
Have you read the Cost Of Knowing? Did you like it? You have the best personality!!!
jesse!!!! you're not leaving booktube any time soon, right? I saw a post you made on your 10 year anniversary that had my eyebrows raised. of course if it's time, it is time but i'm just curious.
we all want to know about the Percy Jackson tv show, I can’t wait
The Tales of Pell by Dawson and Hearne for fun fantasy. Audio books are everything for this series!
