My sister always gets mad at me when I'm sitting there laughing/yelling/crying at a book and I CAN'T STAND IT. She's always like, "IT'S NOT REAL." Like, why does it make you angry when I'm happily enjoying my books? THANK YOU JESSE SOMEONE ELSE GETS IT. Or rather, doesn't get it haha. You always understand me!

Lucas no it doesnt matter where im reading. she'll get mad if shes walking by a room im in and hears me laughing. Its not like i ever sit down next to her while shes doing something, crack open my book, then proceed to yell at it for 10 mins straight. I seclude myself and she'll interrupt me, come into the room im in just to tell me "it isnt real". Or ill be crying-silently- and she'll tell me to get over it, or ill just say "awww!" when something cute happens and she'll scoff at me. (The only time its warrented is sometimes i do laugh against my will reading in bed when shes trying to sleep lol so yes in that case she would have a reason to be mad). But she goes out of her way to make me feel bad about something that makes me happy even when its not disrupting her at all. She honestly just doesnt understand why i like to read
I had an entire classroom of high schoolers run up to my desk as I was finishing a book and crying, and they were like, "calm down miss, it's just a book!!" Oh shut up and go do your homework!!!!!!

One time I made a TH-cam comment saying I was looking forward to reading a certain series, and someone (FOR NO REASON) responded with a long list of characters who died. OKAY I GET IT THAT YOU DID NOT LIKE THE SERIES PARTICUARLY BUT WHY CAN I NOT JUST ENJOY THE SERIES

And if someone asks in the future about said book, I could give them an honest review about it instead of saying "I stopped half way through cause it was bad" but instead I can be like "it's bad because..."

yeah, i didn't necessarily mean if you're hating a book you should put it down, because obviously books i've read where i didn't like the first chunk of the book, but the second chunk of the book redeemed everything. i think i was more getting at people who like go into a book knowing they're going to hate it & they hate read there way through the whole thing. does that make sense? i totally get what you're saying though!
I always have to finish books I'm not enjoying just because I have to know what happens and I always have hope that they might get better! They usually never do though lol but I still need that closure!
Valaeth Artist I'm the same way. Once I get into a book, I want to finish it no matter how I feel about it. Like you, that way I can have a full review of the book and can give an honest reason why I didn't like it. Plus, sometimes books have slow beginnings or a bad scene or two but get better.
Sometimes it's a "it's so bad it's good" kind of thing. Like watching really bad movies. Quality and enjoyment are different things :D
That is so true!!! Like, sorry to all those Twilight fans, but im a Twilight hater and i read the series just so if someone is like "Twilight is better than Harry Potter!" (Im a #potterhead) i can be like no and this is why..... ( the first thing i usually say is Edward is 100 and something years old and Bella is like 17. Then i go on and on about how wierd i find it that vampires SPARKLE in the sun!! Like shouldn't they just burn into ashes and DIE!!!)

I sometimes like to hate-read books, mainly for when I write a terrible draft for one of my novels, I could look at the bad book and think, "hey, if this garbage was published, maybe my writing isn't as bad as I think."

I remember one time I was at the library and they had a display in honour of the 20th anniversary of the first book, and people got to write what the books meant to them. A lot of people were idiots, and were writing things like RIP this person or That Person dies. I luckily had read all the books, but I had to try and make sure my sister didnt see because she hadn't, and let me tell you, it is a little hard to cover up a whole wall lol
I used to "hate" read the acotar series by sarah j maas but then i realized, reading an 800 page book because you "hate" it is just not possible. i was super invested man, and i was definitely not "hate" reading those books at all lol. now i just embrace it and accept that i'm trash for the acotar series and will read any subsequent novella that comes out like the trash person that i am

The « hate reading » thing I kinda get it. I don’t go into a book knowing I won’t like it but when I start a book I don’t enjoy, I need to finish it just to see if the reasons why I don’t like it will disappear even if it rarely does.

I never openly judge or shame anybody for the books they like but I do set my level of friendship with people a bit based on their fav books, like if somebody likes many books that I personally find to be offensive I do adjust how close that person can get to me...like it's not pure judging or anything but I think your fav books also says a lot about your character. But again I never shamed or talked down anybody for their book tastes

P.S. I love that book! This would be really important to me too if i had friends that did read, liking a book that praises abussive relationships or any other kind of bad thing can say a lot about the person's standards and what they consider normal.

So I was in the girls washroom in school, and I had kept my book Queen of Air and Darkness on the (dry part of the) counter. A girl who was talking to a bunch of other friends asked who was reading that book, and I replied that it was me. SHE SPOILED THE WHO BLOODY BOOK!! Also my best friend was reading a book earlier in the same series (City Of Glass) and she spoiled it for her too. Lord of Shadows was spoiled for me too, by another classmate by telling me who dies.
Another thing I don’t get is why people ask “can I spoil that book for you?” Like seriously?? Obviously you can’t! Another friend of mine read the entire plot of City of Ashes to spoil it for my friend mentioned earlier who was reading city of glass.
Also some people ask “why do read such big books when you can just see the movies/tv show??” It’s pissinggg.
Also some people distract me when I’m reading so that I stop reading and talk to them. I get it, they want my company, but can’t they see I’m reading??

Some readers hate on the book they are reading because they might have to read the book for school, university/college, work ect. When I was younger I would hate the books I would have to read for school.

I actually ask for spoilers and read the last page first. Just because I hate surprises and I like trying to put everything together and try to guess all the plot twists. But then again that’s just me.
Oliver Kelsey I dont actually ask for them or something, but i do like to read the last sentence, or the last paragraph (thats just exciting. and the last sentence rarely gives away a lot) and it never ruins a book/movie for me if i know something happening. Actually in one movie i knew how a character was supposed to die and everytime they did the thing i was super engaged like „Noo, this is too early. is it happening now? Whew, they made it.“

The satisfaction of finishing a book, sometimes when I am reading a book and I don't like it very much, sometimes I will get rid of it, other times it's that feeling of having finished yet another book in your collection that keeps me going.

My bff and I was reading the same book, I began reading it because she was saying so much positive things about it, and (because I’m a lot faster at reading than she is,) we got to the final chapter of it at exactly the same time. Then my mom and I was on a trip to see our family on the weekend. On Monday morning she tells me that she fished the book. And guess what? She spoils the ending. I was so angry at her, because I had told her I didn’t want to get spoiled, but she just spoiled me anyway.

And I always respond with, "I don't." There's no point in reading a book that you are not enjoying! Reading is supposed to be pleasurable!
My Best friend only reads Bestsellers and I read book I enjoy. It doesn't matter to me how popular they are. And she says I'm weird because I also read book which aren't famous🤔

Same! My favourite author is Algernon Blackwood, who wrote supernatural stories (including some great horror tales) back in the early 20th century. He's easily the most talented writer I have ever read, but almost nobody talks about him. It makes me kind of sad that people would rather just grab whatever book everyone else is reading than look for something a bit different. If you look beyond the bestseller list, you can find writers who really connect with you!
I've had people/readers judge me for how fast I can read but tbh im like that because i dont read 24/7 someone will like complain or judge me for not finishing a book in a day that how bad it is. Oh i've also had people judge me for how long a book is and for what book like dude wtfrog

This is so relatable! I think it is sad in general that some people feel the need to put others down. And yes, I HATE spoilers, I don't even watch trailers because I want to know absolutely nothing. And as a person who is OBSESSED with GoT, the struggle is real. I am so afraid of season 8 leaks.
I do sometimes read books that I think I'm not going to enjoy for two reasons ; the first is simply that I might be wrong, I find that books are often surprising and I actually think that none of my favorite books have very interesting synopsis, the second is just that I find it interesting to try to understand why I don't like a book, be it the characters, the writing or whatever so I'll know better what to look for in the future but also to not repeat those elements in my own writing. Also I'm like that with movies as well but I really don't need a book to be great to read it, I can always find (little) things I like even in books I hate, if that makes any sense. For example, I absolutely hate The Perks of Being a Wallflower because I find the main character to be extremely biased so I didn't get to experience the world or to think what I wanted of the other characters, I was told what to think and that is something I can never live doing, be it in real life or in books but I still think that the story was good and I know the book helped a lot of people that have experienced the same things as the main character so I'm glad I read it anyway. Hope I could help you a bit !

An extension of the people who 'hate read' books.. I totally agree, but I also don't understand people who are aware they aren't going to like the book but read it and then go and troll the community of people that love the book and either a) post spoilers of major plot points or b) attack other people's feelings about the book just because they don't like it and it's an otherwise very popular franchise. It's a-okay not to like a book and to have your own opinion of why you didn't like it personally, but don't deliberately do it just to have ammunition against those people that do... rant over :D

ARGH! I just re-entered the Percy Jackson fandom and I had no clue the Trials of Apollo existed.
The first thing I found about it was basically someone a couple days after the book came out saying, "AHHH I CAN'T BELIEVE [PERSON'S NAME] DIES!"

You are so right with the Game of Thrones thing, and any other show or book for that matter. I'm super behind on GoT, and got spoiled for the finale this time. I will never understand the need for people to need to spoil everything that happened! Because either A) the people that see your tweet or post ALSO watched and knows already, or B) you just ruined it for someone else. There's literally not an in between. So frustrating.

My family is full of readers and my favorite series is The Lunar Chronicles and my sisters is Harry Potter. She got mad at me for not having Harry Potter be my favorite and threw Winter on the floor and it broke the cover from the spine. It was the saddest moment in my life.

I can totally relate to all the things you've mentioned, except the first one. I think I can understand why people go for hate-reading. There are couple of reasons-
1. Ranting opportunities. Lol. Some people go into book knowing they'd hate it because it gives them opportunity to write super mean reviews. They like to go on and on and on about HOW BAD the book is.
2. Curiosity- Some books gain so much popularity and are so hyped that you decide to read it just to find out what all the hype is about. Even though you know you'd hate it, you read it.
3. Someone gives you a book (which you know you'd hate) and asks you to read it, you have to read it. No matter how much your eyes bleed while reading it.
4. Reading OCD. Starting a book series, not liking a single character or the storyline in the first book, still reading the next book, because you have READING OCD. And you can't leave a series or book half-way. Because, you're proud that you don't have DNF Shelf. Lol

Urrrr!!!! I hate spoilers too!!!! And I am also a fan of GoT so I know how it feels to read or watch spoilers without wanting it!!! It's so frustrating (whenever there is a new episode, my priority is to completely avoid social media. That's the only way)!! The same happens with books! I just can't understand.

i definitely used to be one of those people who didn’t understand why others didn’t enjoy my favourite books (*ahem* harry potter) because i just couldn’t comprehend the flaws of it. but now i can see the flaws and why others wouldn’t enjoy it.

Completely agree. I'm not much of a fan of Sarah J Maas books and every time I've given her books one star reviews, I ALWAYS get the fangirls telling me to kill myself...like what?!?! It's a book! It's not real! -facepalm-
Same, the only SJM books I really liked were everything Throne of Glass BEFORE Queen of Shadows and ACOMAF. Didn't care for ACOTAR, hated ACOWAR, and yeah lol. Haven't read much in Tower of Dawn yet, but I heard good things and I love Chaol so... we shall see. I've been told that many times too, but I continue to read them to see if SJM improves. Also, I'm already invested in the story, and ToG is gonna end real soon anyways. And I also keep reading ToG because I love a few side characters (Manon, Elide/Lorcan, Chaol, Lysandra). Don't really care about the others, I used to love Dorian and Celaena and I liked Rowan in Heir of Fire but that's it. :/ Yeah, I think a lot of younger readers (12 and younger) probably read her books and get more offended when they realize other people *gasp* think differently! Lol I don't even say anything back at this point, there's honestly no use.
I completely Agree! the one I agree the most on is judging other readers! and not just for the books they enjoy or how many books they have, but it's a Hardback vs Paperback, Cracking the Spine vs Not Cracking the Spine, Bookmark vs, Dogear, Ebook vs Physical book, Audiobook vs Physical book, it's ridiculous! We are all consuming the same content either way!

Maybe they want to tell the author how bad there book is and if didn't want "hate" they should not have made the book if could not handle it
There's also polite ways to say those things. And the author probably loves their book and spent a lot of their time into the making of it. It's just rude and mean to throw hate at a author just because you don't like their book.
Plus, do you want really want to be seen as an ass on Twitter. Because social media is actually public.

Obviously not. If you don't like a book, that sucks, I get it. So write a negative review on Goodreads, film a review on it, whatever. But _don't_ tag the author in said negative review. Authors know to be cautious when looking into reviews because they know negative ones exist. There is no need for you to make an effort for them to see your review. Because what do you gain? You just hurt an artist, that's it. You might hate their work but the thing is, there's someone out there doing this to authors you love. Don't be that person. There's no need to be cruel.
tl;dr: It's perfectly fine to hate a book. It's fine to say so online. But it's not fine to shove those painful words in the creator's face.

Like with spoilers, i read Harry potter for the first time at the end of 2019-start of 2020 and i didnt remember anything past goblet of fire since they were the films i would re watch and people blamed me when they spoiled it😅
My boyfriend is currently reading my favorite book series for the first time and GHHAAAHHH it's an exercise in self control to not spoil the next chapter!
I don't understand why I'm such a competitive reader. I read 300 books last school year, and this year I promised myself that I would be chill. Well, I made a 20,000 page goal for the first quarter (9 weeks) and I've already reached that. I've also read 50 books in 33 days already. So much for being chill.

I started watching GoT pretty late and I already knew every single thing that was going to happen because of the internet. In fact, once Entertainment Weekly spoiled me for GoT by posting a gif from the latest episode with the caption 'when someone spoils GoT'. I was so mad
I used to forcibly read books I didn't like too. I thought that since I bought a book I must read it, no matter how I liked it. And when you first talked about it, I thought "Dude what am I doing with my life". I haven't finished a book i don't like ever since. Lots of love from Greece, Jesse!!!
yo i am SO glad no one ever spoiled Harry Potter for me back when i was in 5th grade bc some of the character deaths left me SHOOK! i don’t get the sick fascination with ruining things for other people either
I totally agree with what you are saying Jesse. I've personally never "hate read" a book. It's hard enough picking up a book I'm not interested in, let alone a book I know I will hate. But regarding Twitter hate comments, the way I see it is, if you can't imagine saying what you are wanting to tweet to said author, then don't tweet it at all. Words hurt whether read or spoken.

I do the spoiling thing as a revenge tool. For example. My "friend" spoiled Allegiant for me so I spoiled Mockingjay
I agree with you Jesse! I have been so judged by others for having to "many books" at one point, that was all the comments i used on the videos
