    I am also a diy lady. I didn't hear you mention it, but it is essential that the whole porch slope outward from your house to permit water to drain off, away from the house. Otherwise, there will be further damage under the door area.

    Mrs Danie...
    Did you know that stabbing a pointed stick into the space where you pulled out weeds, then pouring boiling water directly from your kettle into the resulting holes, will cook the roots of the weed and it will never come back? It works on dandelions thistles, milkweed and many other weeds. My Gran used it to control the volunteers that seeded in from other people's yards and the road verges. It worked very well, and there were no chemicals in sight.

      Boiling water is a temporary fix. It will kill the weeds (young, tender ones, not mature weeds) but won't kill the roots, so they will grow back if you don't dig them out completely.

      A strong salt solution kills all weeds including the roots. It’s so effective that it changes the oh of the soil so you’re not able to plant there for a couple years. If you’re using make sure the solution doesn’t go on anything you want to keep like lawn, it needs protection but as the solution can travel easily eg when killing weeds on a cobbled path, don’t go any closer to the lawn than about 6 inches in case of run off. You can use vinegar for another effective weed killer but it only kills the tops and not the roots. New sub from Northern Ireland 😊

      It missed on one point; obviously, based on someone getting rid of that brick, "one man's trash is another man's treasure ".
      So why did she dig up her pavers only to throw them all together, breaking them, and making them basically unusable for anyone else instead of posting them in Facebook or somewhere to see if anyone wanted them?
      It's easy to be the "taker", the one that's thrilled to get the free stuff that fulfill your vision; but then why would you not understand that you don't just trash all of the stuff that you could easily offer to someone else for free who's in a worse financial state and would _love_ to have _anything_ that could help them get out of the mud in their yard??
      Not really being a good steward there, even _if_ she's choosing to reuse some other stuff.
      Do I understand that sometimes it's easier to junk stuff? 100%
      But a lot of these "influencers" speak about using secondhand, and yet, if you don't walk the walk in regards to donating or reselling your "junk", where does that put you?

    • @jtbburch4674
      @jtbburch4674 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      She did reuse many of her pavers in front of her garage and put some of the ones she took from the garden back in as a decorative path around the little tree. I saw that she threw one or two in the truck bed, but I think she did great. Plus, there may be a place she can donate the rocks and rubble to that will crush it and reuse/sell it for another use. I'm not familiar with what is acceptable or usable, so maybe I'm off the mark on that one. Regardless, she did reuse quite a bit. Which I was happy to note as I watched. When I saw her toss the couple pavers, I also thought she should be reusing them or posting them for others to have. Then at the end she described how she used them elsewhere.

    When you first started pulling up the old stuff, I was thinking how nice a semi-circle would look instead of a rectangle porch-like thing. I do know this-when tiling or even laying brick, you start the pattern dead center and work out, not end to end. So any small pieces being fit are on the perimeter. Neater. Ended up looking good, I like the brick step up and added decor. A red door would be awesome.

    You have an invasive species on your property. It's the vines growing on either side of your knome. I also see it in front of your garage door. It is called Dog Stangling Vine (DVS). Ways to get rid of it: dig out all of the root and put entire plant in a black plastic bag. Leave out in the sun for a few years. Then throw away in the garbage. Never compost an invasive species. The plant is easiest to remove as a seedling which looks different from it's stretched out vine stage. Next best thing is to remove flowers and seed pods and bag them as mentioned. Mowing can weaken the plants but will not get rid of them. Mowing helps when there are many of the plant as they can really take over an area quickly displacing native habitats which results in a loss and decline of native fauna. Cutting an inch below the stem into the root can also help stop the spread by maintaining where DSV currently is but again won't be eradicating the plant completely.

    • @donnabacon4681
      @donnabacon4681 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@paulas_lensPersonally, using the black bag method for any type of invasive plant seems like the best option, as the black will attract more heat, killing the plant inside, thereby, keeping it from growing as it would just throwing in the trash.

    No job is ever straight forward but you took the correct steps & you did the proper prep work. Always takes forever. And even if a person couldn't afford to replace the brick work / pavers - it's amazing how clearing the weeds & greenery etc. helps a lot. You were lucky to get the bricks for free as things like bricks & stones are so expensive & so is disposing of them. And one does need to be reasonably fit to do the work or get someone to help for health & safety. If one is doing a garden on a budget - you could keep the big rocks / boulders & make a rockery / feature out of them. Did you have all the tools / equipment or did you have to hire it - it all adds up. Do you need dust masks and what about proper footwear? Give you credit for all your hardwork.

    Shout out to the editor! That brick cutting montage was so fun to watch. :D I mean everything was fun to watch as always. Love your work Danie! I just noticed my smile going even wider on that part.

    The bricks look FANTASTIC! I kept thinking that, because of the way the door opens, the shelf might have been better on the other side of the door. 🤷‍♀️ You certainly changed the curb appeal of your house getting rid of all the random pavers. Great job!

    Absolutely stunning & inspiring 🎉 I was gifted with the same amount of bricks from a friend 4 yrs ago. I’d love to build a platform off my deck under our dogwood tree for an awesome grill area. You’ve inspired me to finally start planning! ❤😊

    You can't hear me but I'm yelling at you to stop pulling out the rocks!! Your old farmhouse had a rock foundation. The big gap in the corner would have been a good place to put those stones you pulled out before you foamed. Foam is not structural. BUT...the end result looks great aesthetically.

      I was thinking that too. I was surprised that she took the structural integrity of the bricks with gravel, sand, and tamping so seriously but filled her foundation with foam. Hope it doesn't pose a problem and ruin her beautiful work!
