You saved a well built, dovetail detail on the drawers, piece of furniture and turned it into a beautiful, updated, multi functional piece of furniture.
We need to do more of this instead of purchasing poorly made particle board furniture. Surely this repurposed cabinet will last much longer than the cheap stuff from the blue and yellow store with the great meatballs. This piece looks great although I would have removed the hinges and replaced them with hidden hinges.
unfortunately ‘dovetail is not “it all”. These were separated, unaligned, & had gone beyond in my view of them (”...fairly ok made peace....”). Shelves in lower ‘doored section’ were hung cheaply. Draw bottoms lesser material used, poor external hinges on doors, etc. Esp for the time frame manufactured).
We got this exact hutch from a neighbor who was moving, 12 years ago. My husband hates it and it’s sitting in our basement. Our 11-year-old took the shelf part to use as a bookshelf, but I love what you did here and I’m inspired to make over the hutch. Many, many thanks!!

I'LL TELL YOU WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM, THEY'RE MEAN MISERABLE AND JEALOUS OF ANYTHING THAT ANYONE DOES THAT THEY DIDN'T THINK OF! AND BECAUSE THEY'RE SITTING BEHIND A KEYBOARD THEY'RE JUST SO SMART AND SO SAVVY AND SO INTELLIGENT AND JUST KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING! This was a horrible piece of furniture that no one wanted and now it looks beautiful and can be used for so many things! A bunch of keyboard antique connoisseurs!!!
You do you. You bought it, styled it, made it your own. I am very proud of you… I am 72 and love antiques, but… this was a great repurposing project. You keep making your world beautiful. ❤
Personally I liked it better scalloped, it's not really to my taste the way she did it but I'm ok with that since it's not my furniture. I really was surprised the way she could change it to something completely different and I found that inspiring.
Thank you for “breaking the rules” about not removing doors, painting over the hardware, and cutting the bottom! Doors are such a struggle for me to put back on. I like how the painted hardware blends in. And the shape of the base and legs is perfect! Scalloped would give its secrets away!
Also, she is painting the piece while it is sitting on a carpeted floor, and there is no paint on the carpet, pretty amazing! I would have needed to put the plastic sheeting down first that can be rolled up and tossed when the project is done or used a reuseable tarp, or cardboard underneath, I'm sure a bit of paint would have dripped on the floor if I was painting this piece.
Yes! Just because it’s not antique doesn’t mean it’s not worth updating. I grew up on furniture bought second hand, so when I bought a house I was excited to go to an actual furniture store. I couldn’t believe how cheap everything looked! I ended up getting most of secondhand 😅😅
Girl don't worry about what people think or say... It's your TH-cam not theirs. There are other channels made just for those people. This channel is for us to admire your work. I love this piece 🙌🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow, it's sad you have to keep apologizing & explaining for why you've decided to do certain things when refinishing furniture due to negative comments. Your viewers need to remember this is YOUR channel, YOUR furniture, YOUR creative expression & vision. If they don't like it, let them start their own channels & do their own thing their way. Own your decisions girl, don't buy into their guilt projections. You are a powerful person and doing great work. You go girl, kudos!
Agreed. No apologies necessary. I love what you do to transform a piece of junk furniture into something useful. Recycling is the way to go 👍👍. You inspire me. Thank you 😊
I hate that you have to say : "this will probably make some of you mad" and then explain why you do it your way. You do beautiful work. Thank you for your time and inspiration!
I did one like this I got for $3 at an auction, I cut off all the frills on the base and uppercase, gave it more modern lines, and turned it into a midcentury modern style coffee bar, complete with atomic style wallpaper behind the upper shelves. sold in less than an hour. Anything that saves a piece from the dump, I'm all for!!.. and that's from someone who spent 27 years in the actual antique restoration business, don't listen to fools who think every piece of old furniture is an antique worth a bunch of money, it's just not the case, those who complain never spend money on the antiques anyway, their homes are usually full of Ikea and Bobs discount furniture stuff..lol
@@thehungrygoldfish Well, there are antiques, and then there are ANTIQUES. Just because something is old - even over 100 years old - doesn’t mean it qualifies for historic preservation. Pine furniture in particular (with oak and close 2nd) - and ESPECIALLY anything in the mid-century colonial revival style - has no real historic value (or, I’d argue, inherent beauty…). Homes were positively SWIMMING in colonial furniture for decades - there’s no lack of it - and even when solid wood and well-built, it was often mass-produced. When we’re assessing something made of a rarer wood such as chestnut or walnut (both of which are quite costly to purchase even as planks today) - that’s a different story. Painting over those woods - and certain types of mahogany pieces - is what raises issues. People actually ruin valuable pieces because they can’t tell the difference. I have a hunch, though, that the so-called “wood purists” often can’t tell the difference between quality and run-of-the mill (pun intended) - they just think anything old is special and precious. Notwithstanding that, “Screw the purists” and “Paint all the antique furniture” is a pretty reckless statement. I sometimes watch videos where the opposite is taking place: paint is being stripped off a valuable antique, and people are lambasting whichever idiot painted it in the first place. I’ve pointed out that the only reason the piece survives is BECAUSE it was painted - in other words, the family who owned the piece decades ago opted to keep and paint it because they couldn’t afford to buy something new. Had they been richer, off to the charity sale it would have gone - where it would likely have been bought and painted to get it to match better. The point of all this is to make the most out of furniture - to increase its value and utility. Suggesting that people slap paint on anything they fancy comes across as ignorant. Better to educate yourself on what you’re working with - as was shown here - so you don’t make a costly mistake.
I bought a 130 year old house and took out all the kitchen cabinets. I then started looking for this type of furniture for all my cabinets. I have four hutches and I left them with the original finish and put plate glass on the base top so it could be used as a cutting board and to protect the wood. They have darkened over the past 25 years but I'm happy with it. The hutches give my kitchen a good amount of drawers and work space. Decorate the way YOU want and don't worry about what others think because they don't live in your house. 😂
We restore antiques also. If you are planning on keeping do what makes you happy. This piece is clearly not an antique. It looks lovely. So glad it found a new home
I don’t know about you, but the idea of buying furniture at IKEA or Walmart hurts me. I have to buy pieces that are tried and true; vintage & antique. I only buy new if it’s plush and I can’t wash the cushions.
Exactly! These pieces? Are way better made and quality even though they aren't expensive. I loathe the mass produced products made in ROC and out of cheap material and fall apart within a year. I've found or bought similar pieces and did exactly what she did to the hutch. I have many friends doing this now or asking me for ideas. 😄 I have always LOVED doing this.
Why do you keep saying , people might get mad if you do certain things. Hey this is "your" make over, no one elses. End of discussion ❤It looks amazing 👏 ❤
This let's people know that she reads the comments. Some people, have very strong opinions about other peoples choices & tend to not voice them very nicely😢! I would have used something to raise the top higher from the bottom, in order to have headroom for a coffee maker & accessories. Inside the top, display coffee mugs! I love the color & the adjustment of the skirt but I love coffee & have no diapers to change😂! Perfect Piece Outcome❤!
50s and 60s is still vintage. I’m so happy you gave it a new life. I hope you sell the hardware, there’s actually people who love that stuff. Personally your choice of hardware was up my alley, so pretty.
Love this makeover. We used a three-drawer chest as our changing table for our first baby 45 years ago and still use that same chest in our bedroom today! Great investment.
I just remembered when my son was born, we bought furniture from an auction of a bank that went under. My baby's changing table was formerly some executive's modern chrome and enameled steel desk we got for $10. When we moved out we left it, sucker was heavy!
Hinges. Take the hinge off. Fill the holes with a wood filler before it dries, stick a straight pin in the center, and leave it. When you are done painting, pull out the straight pin and you now have marked holes to reset your hinges. Works on house doors really well or anything that i want perfectly realigned when i reassemble it.
I'm sure she knew how to do the hinges, they just don't always work the same after reassembling (which may not happen to you, but does to most everyone else). You do it how you want to do it, and everyone else will do it how they want to do it. I think the blue hinges look great.
@@latebloomerabroadI agree the hinges look fine painted but they were just making a suggestion. I’m sure you didn’t intend to sound rude but the way you wrote it was rude. IMO. Have a wonderful day. Smile; be happy 😃
If you are the type of person who doesn't like furniture that is only original, don't watch repurposing videos. In love what is done to this piece. Always think outside the box!
Listen Gramma. I was giving her a bit of constructive criticism. Is that all right with you? Or are we not allowed to because it will make someone uncomfortable. Don't tell me what I can and cannot watch.
@@CookieZ3353 I don’t recall that she asked for any “constructive criticism”, and just for the record, the actual meaning of the phrase constructive criticism is examining the idea or statement or behaviour in a well-reasoned manner, by offering specific and actionable feedback, which will help them achieve their outcome. Key words there are THEIR OUTCOME. Not YOUR outcome, their outcome. As opposed to simply being judgemental & critical, which means that you are taking a view on something based on your personal value systems, I.e., you don’t care for the style!
Christina, you could take the top and cut off the wavy bits, and make sure the shelves have a router lines to hold plates, it could be hung on the wall to display pretty dishes and decor, it would give that English cottage or French country vibe......hope you show what you did to the top.....
That's exactly what l thought too. Especially when she said she had done it to multiple dressers. I also like lalad's idea of using it near the changing table.
I have a small china cabinet that was given to my mother in the 1950s. It was a blonde veneer that she painted mahogany. She gave it to me 30 years ago, and it has remained that color. I have always liked it because it's quite simple and small. I also always wanted to paint it but never attempted to because of the veneer. I cannot wait to try this Beyond Paint. It seems like it's going to be the perfect answer.
I have this same hutch from my grandmother! I have plans to paint it blue next weekend. Happy to come across it to get a visual first, it turned out beautiful.
Also, no one should be getting “mad” about what you decide to do like painting over hinges, not taking the doors off, etc. This is your furniture! Some people need someone to tell them to mind their own business. It looks wonderful! Keep it up! 😊
Love what you did with this old colonial hutch. It looks current. No one is interested in old pieces anymore, & you’ve given it new life. I’m also glad you ignore the haters.
My house is decorated with pieces that are well over 100 years old. I love old pieces of furniture but I also love new ones too 😊 This lady does beautiful work. I’m glad she ignores the haters too, they don’t know what they’re talking about 😆
I had never heard of Beyond Paint… now I am excited to try it out for myself. Your project looks amazing. I love how you modernized the style with your trusty jigsaw.
This Beyond Paint, it is EXACTLY what I need for projects, I see the value of the saying: LIVE AND LEARN... :). LOVE her transformation on this furniture!
It’s so difficult for me to understand how people give their negative comments on what you’re doing with your project. It’s YOUR project and what you decide to do with or to alter it, is entirely your decision. I appreciate others vision for doing things. It may not be my taste, but it doesn’t have to be for me to appreciate someone else’s point of view. I’m sure my taste doesn’t mesh with many others, but I really don’t care. As long as we love it, that’s all that matters to me. BTW, I love what you did with this piece! It looks fantastic and thanks for the valuable information on paint! I’ve got three projects that include painting so away I go to Lowe’s (which is conveniently just down the street) to buy your recommended paint!
It's so beautiful! And when the baby grows up and gets their first apartment-he can take it with him! If you took that 4-pictures screen shot back to the thrift store (with the "before" pic as well,) they could put it up in the furniture area to show people what can be done with a little work and great paint!
Seeing the thumbnail stirred up some serious regret I have had for years… I let a hutch very similar to this go, and it was my beloved grandmother’s. Sometimes we do really stupid things. It didn’t fit our life then, but it would now, I don’t care how, I would make it work. 😞
Turn the top piece upside down, add a shelf to close the open bottom and hang upside down on the wall. I have an upside down colonial dry sink mounted in my kitchen for Tupperware and the scalloped edges now at the top look great. This has given me a whole new point of view to consider when shopping for a piece.
Boy, you have some crabby viewers! If they want to leave a piece of furniture looking like the '50's that's their choice, but since this one isn't a valuable antique, there's also nothing wrong with bringing it into the 21st century. I love the blue color, and how well that goes with the original color, and the simplified legs will go well with many styles of decor! You go, girl!!
Don't know what I was so concerned with the haters in this one. I guess I've just heard it so much...I was letting them know I already know their complaints. 🤣
I didn’t realise this was compulsory viewing. If those miserable people don.t like it turn off and go away. Say nice or shut up. I loved what you did . Totally and absolutely👏👏👏❤❤
I agree!! I’m always surprised with those people that feel like content creators should do exactly as they would do. Not so!! If I had a channel I would immediately delete and block those people that can’t be civil. I loved this video and the cabinet looks great!
I love people who rush to join groups, FB, and TH-cam to jump up and down on someone willing to teach us another way to update furniture or save a piece from the landfill. After all, that is how this whole business got started. They have zero vision or ability to think out of the box, and thus, their orange furniture filled homes are darkened and will be landfill items when the unfortunate day comes and they pass away. Christina, I have always enjoyed your channel, keep up your magic, and update it all!!!❤🎉❤
We have that hutch! My husband's grandpa actually built the one we have (So I can't change it). I use it for tool storage in our main living area. We have no garage so my tools live in the house. (He worked for that company)
I have a very similar one, except mine is a corner bookshelf hutch where I keep my collection of cookbooks. It's also early American maple, same look. I think mine was meant to be a desk, as it only has one shallow drawer. I never thought about painting it! Now I'm imagining a whole new look for that thing. I'm happy to learn about the Beyond Paint product. It's about time to repaint my antique iron bed. It belonged to my grandparents, and they got it second hand sometime around 1900. I painted it white with antique gold accents when I was a teenager, and now I'm 62. I'm thinking of changing it to a bolder color, or black with faux verdigris for the fancy swirly decorative parts. I love how this turned out! Hard to believe it's the same hutch!
I would love to have the same one. It's getting so hard to find classic well-made, well-designed furniture because these rich young people keep buying it all to butcher it into junky monstrosities that look like they came from IKEA. They need to go to IKEA or Walmart or The Dollar Store to buy their junk furniture and stop destroying the classics that people like us keep trying to find.
I paint over my hinges on my big Hutch 5 years later they still look good and are not scratched even though I open the doors on them all the time. You go girl!
I had no idea you were going to ditch the top part of the hutch - and it made all the difference! As did reshaping those legs - perfect touch! A brilliant way to upcycle this piece, IMHO!
I think that adding blockie little legs to the top that you removed, might make a cute little shelf for wee books and toys for toddlers... And IF you had added sturdy picture hanging brackets, it could be hung on a wall either over the base cabinet, OR Alone, in a kitchen for spices, cookbooks & bric-a-brac!
This was a brilliant project. Removing the old hardware was, of course, definitely in the cards. Removing all the extra curves on the base certainly didn't make me mad. I think it cleaned up a lot of visual distractions and made the profile far more clean. As for the paint you used, I have never used it, but I sure will after watching this video. Very nice job, Christina.
Wow, what a beautiful new creation! You did an awesome job taking an outdated piece of furniture and giving it new life. So many uses. Love the color and the hardware is perfect. It is wonderful to recycle and save items from the landfill. Looking forward to a video on the top piece to see what you create. Thank you for sharing.
I love that you updated the dated skirt and legs. It made such a difference. I can’t wait to see what you do with hutch. I’ve never used Beyond Paint before and now I’m excited to give it a try,
That turned out so beautiful! We once owned a house with curly cue trim and we hired a contractor to cut it off. Made a huge difference in the appearance. So I was applauding all your efforts to remove the "colonial" from that solid maple furniture! With the new hardware, it took it from 1960 to 2024 in an instant!
I am one who likes natural wood, but it depends upon the piece of furniture too. Some old pieces I don't think should ever be painted, but you did the right thing here. It was a piece of furniture that probably wasn't all that expensive, no one was buying it, so I don't see the problem with painting it. It looks great too! You did a good job.
Great makeover. The hardware really works. I still won’t be taking a second look at passed-over pieces of furniture in the thrift store because the last thing I need in my life is another project. So soothing to watch other people being productive while I sit and do absolutely nothing 😉
When we moved into our 1962 house there were three areas with scalloped edging I couldn’t get rid of fast enough. Now I have a hutch that needs a makeover. Thanks for the ideas on how to update it!❤
I actually do antique furniture restoration. That's how I support my family. I see some of the people commenting here because she painted this. There is nothing to restore here. This isn't a valuable item. Its not rare. Its crappy wood. The "wood grain" within the finish is actually WITHIN the finish. Its not even actual wood grain. I agree with what you did there. Some pieces NEED paint or they're just always going to be ugly. This is a fantastic and trendy way to recycle these otherwise unwanted pieces.
@@dahomesteadacre5099Well since it had been sitting there for such a long time and NOBODY wanted it….Obviously not one other person felt it was worth anything🤷♀️
Beautiful makeover! I would update the shelf to match the same color as the base and they could use that by hanging it above it and put baby powder’s diapers. Any kinds of things that they need right there wash cloths for the baby. And if they use it for a coffee bar. They could store their coffees, their mugs, and anything else they’d like to use with a coffee bar.
I really appreciate how you walked us through your whole process and the tools you used. I am eager to use this paint for a much needed makeover of my daughter's nightstand. 😊
you could Always just spray paint the hinges a color close to your pulls. it won't be as thick as the furniture paint and might work a little better in the long run
Could the beyond paint work on kitchen cabinet doors? Really like this make over. Shame on anyone who ‘gets mad’ over saving a piece of furniture from the dump! Keep up the good work.
@@ChristinaMuscari OMG! This might be the beginning of something epic! Will have to look into this more deeply. Do you have a video on kitchen cabinets?
I have THIS SAME HUTCH!! I inherited it from my in-laws (along with another matching one) and I’d love to update them 🫤 Seeing this has given me hope! ❤
I inherited the exact same hutch from my Mom. It's been in storage for a couple of years Now I have the knowledge on how to modernize it and use it. Thanks.
we have a local shop that does a lot of repurposing old furniture to make it look french country- with paint and decals. i love it. i don't have the time and money for supplies, but they keep things affordable. i enjoy buying secondhand things, it's better for the environment and less expensive than new. old furniture was built to last, unlike the particle board we get now.
A couple years ago when my GF and I were looking for furniture for our small house that we were refurbing we found a hutch basically like this, The bottom we turned into an Entertainment Center and the top we turned into a shelf for the bathroom. ALL of our furniture except the Couch and our Mattress and Box Springs.
I did this with an old 50s armoire that you can hang clothes in. My older daughter threw a fit. While my younger helped me do it. I used wallpaper for 5he 2 front doors. And then painted the edges with sage color paint. Replaced all knobs with glass ones. It looks so pretty. Im using it to hold all my vrafting and sewing stuff. Thank you
Your comment made me smile. I love “Cottage Style” and paint is the key that gives my home a unifying calm look. But my son is horrified that I’ve painted much of my furniture.
I turns out really nice. You see what you can do with a bit of imagination. When we got married in 1981 and bought our house, its big kitchen needed something big in it, and we wanted a welsh dresser. Unfortunately, there were none around so we found this junk shop locally which put the shelf part onto the base parts in matching wood. We chose a base part and the guy used recycled wood from the stairway of an old school and put shelves on top. It was greatly admired by all visitors. My friend admired it so much that when we remodelled our kitchen, going from dark wood to bright white and pale wood, we gave it to her, along with the table we were gifted when we moved into the house. She still has it to this day. That must have been around about 2008. It was a good item and certainly is still giving value for money.
This is the exact hutch my Mom had. I'm 66 so it has to be at least 60. She also had table and chairs. After she passed away I gave this to my oldest granddaughter.
It was beautiful before the woman in the video ruined it. I would've been happy to have had the same hutch. It's a shame to see that young people these days want to make everything look like it came from IKEA. It's getting harder to find classic, well-built, well-designed furniture anymore since rich young people keep snatching up everything to turn it into junky IKEA messes for videos. I was hoping she'd do something to show its beauty, but no, she had to butcher it. Now no one will be able to enjoy it after she throws it in the garbage so she can go with next season's furniture-video fad.
@@mynameisworldNay Nay! I’m a professional photographer and beginning woodworker. If you showed the original piece to 100 people, you’d get HUNDREDS of opinions. She didn’t ruin a classic Shaker item. It originally was an economy copy. She deserves to be praised not criticized and many agree.
Looks great! But, I would have painted the top half in the same color and sold as a wall unit so someone could have a matching set if they wanted. That could have been a very cute shelf unit above a changing station!
I love that she saved a real wood piece furniture, not pressed wood. Real wood holds up well over the years and is lighter and stronger than pressed wood. She knows what she is doing. I loved how she transformed this great piece of wood. It is so attractive!
Don't worry about what negative people have to say. When they buy what they want, they can do what they want to their own piece. I think your work is off the chain 💯....you hooked that piece up. Get it, it came out so nice, great color as well.❤
I love painted wood so I have no problem with that. The blue is beautiful and looks great with the gold. A few critics would be, painting hinges to me always looks cheap and doesn't wear well. A lot of people in the comments agree with jigsawing off the scallops but to me that takes a pretty detail and makes it more plain and jigsawing never looks as good to me as the professional cut. Another minor nitpick as I look at the piece, the four handles look off for some reason. I think I would have put a large center handle on the top drawer and filled in the holes also not a fan of these handles with such sharp corners especially in a baby's room. All that being said though, it's a lovely job.
I thought the same thing about the handles being a little off. I think another option would have been to fill in the original holes in the top drawer and move the handles closer to each other so they are directly above the handles on the second row of drawers. But overall, I love the makeover, especially the contrast between the paint color and the hardware.
My house is old school. It is furnished of high quality reproductions and antiques that are much better made of fine woods than the cheap stuff that is fashionable today.
Oh Kathy Jo you are so creative! Those mushrooms were awesome! I say ‘oops a daisy’ all the time in front of the grandkids so they won’t hear what I might say if they weren’t here. LOL! 😂 😂😂
Going to try this paint! If you do want to remove the doors…take the hinges off, but label them to go back to the spot they originally came from. It’ll go right back together and the doors will work fine. I just mark the back side of each hinge with the location. This way you can spray paint the hinges any color.
The only thing I have to say that people will say is ‘negative’…is that everyon keeps saying it’s a colonial piece, when it’s not, it’s 50’s mass produced maple American. That’s it!…but GREAT JOB, love what you did. So much work!!!
You are running a business. Your decisions are what sells best in your area. Just plug your ears to other’s opinions. You gave this piece new life and purpose.❤
You are really brave to paint without any drop cloth/paper under the project. I love to paint but, I get on me, my clothes and what is under the project! It still looks great!
YOUR PROJECT, YOUR RULES! It's one thing to give a tip to make future projects easier. It's absolutely rude to make a snarky comment on how it "should be done". If you're an expert, good for you. If you're a flipper, you do what sells. Get over yourselves, you control freaks. She is happy and she does lovely work. You do you, Christina. Your project came out very nice. The blue and gold combo is on point right now. I hope, if it is your plan, this piece sells quickly. Cheers.
Looks SO much better! When I was 13 years old, I bought an old dresser, nothing special and sanded it and painted it blue…turned out very nice! It was in a throw away pile. Used it for 7 years until went to college, my parents moved and I do not know where it went after that 😊
Dovetailing is not the sign of quality that it once was. Now days lots of furniture has dovetail joints, but are made of a soft wood, not at AI like dovetailing the oak joints of yesteryears.
I appreciate seeing repurpose and reuse, gives old furniture a new life. Instead of being thrown away.
Thanks!
I like as is also
Beautiful job!
I like it as it is.
You saved a well built, dovetail detail on the drawers, piece of furniture and turned it into a beautiful, updated, multi functional piece of furniture.
Right and it is all wood and not particle board like some in the recent decades.

I would have needed to put the plastic sheeting down first that can be rolled up and tossed when the project is done or used a reuseable tarp, or cardboard underneath, I'm sure a bit of paint would have dripped on the floor if I was painting this piece.
I always wear a lot of paint when I paint. I keep some old clothes back to wear when painting so I do not ruin good things.
Really quick easy update. The old furniture is made so much better than what is available today and worth saving. Beautiful job.
Yes! Just because it’s not antique doesn’t mean it’s not worth updating. I grew up on furniture bought second hand, so when I bought a house I was excited to go to an actual furniture store. I couldn’t believe how cheap everything looked! I ended up getting most of secondhand 😅😅

Well said.
Great idea to cut off scalloping.
It's your piece to do with what you like. It turned out very nice.
Totally agree.😊
So, you’re allowed to make fun of other people but they’re not allowed to say what they think?
@@colleenobrien8212Yes. Screw the purists! We will paint all the antique furniture and they can’t stop us!!!!
@@thehungrygoldfish not my point at all. Paint whatever you like. But don’t judge someone and then do what you’re accusing them of doing.
I’d love to see pictures of what you created 😊

Genius. It’s a good, solid and well built piece of furniture and is multifunctional. I’d use yours before ever buying something from Walmart or IKEA.
I just wonder what she did with the shelf top.
I hope you sell the hardware, there’s actually people who love that stuff. Personally your choice of hardware was up my alley, so pretty.
I try to save and reuse old hardware!
Great suggestions!

Its a great paint!
I have this same hutch from my grandmother! I have plans to paint it blue next weekend. Happy to come across it to get a visual first, it turned out beautiful.
I love seeing a vintage quality piece of real wood furniture be give new purpose and new life. Bless you for doing that. Beautiful!

I was wondering about the top piece. Will it be used for a different project?

I love this!
Love that you used the "he" pronoun in the classic way. Refreshing and comforting to this retired teacher/senior citizen.
Great idea!
Boy, you have some crabby viewers! If they want to leave a piece of furniture looking like the '50's that's their choice, but since this one isn't a valuable antique, there's also nothing wrong with bringing it into the 21st century. We have that hutch! My husband's grandpa actually built the one we have (So I can't change it). I use it for tool storage in our main living area. We have no garage so my tools live in the house. (He worked for that company)
I agree. Keep it as it is with the sentimental value.
Love this video and your work,I learned so much! I think I am ready to try it myself finally thanks to you and your video!❤
Believe she will remake the top to a bookshelf.

I didn't know furniture and paint needed to cure down for 30 days. Today I learned something new!
Yes, almost any kind of paint needs to.
I also learned this today. Great video!
Especially any darker paint. More tint takes longer to dry and cure, since you're diluting the base more.
I didn't know how long, but I knew it should be weeks to completely harden so that a few bumps won't risk damaging the paint.❤

Agree, except the new knobs look cheap.
Well it was maple wood. Do what you want but it was great wood.
I am so envious of your energy and vision of your beautiful new pieces.
This is NOT "crappy" wood at all. It's made of maple. It's from the 1950s and valuable, especially to those who actually know their value.

we have a local shop that does a lot of repurposing old furniture to make it look french country- with paint and decals. i love it. i don't have the time and money for supplies, but they keep things affordable. i enjoy buying secondhand things, it's better for the environment and less expensive than new. old furniture was built to last, unlike the particle board we get now.
Thank you

I love the fact you’re re-purposing furniture and it is saved from landfill. Great job!😊

I didn't like the sharp angular handles either, I was thinking the same thing, sharp metal corners at a toddler's eye level. 😒

Both class and elegance. Thank you!
I see people redoing all different pieces of furniture on utube all the time and they turn out great, no one wants to go back to the 50,s style
Love the look of this cabinet. No one would believe that it was colonial. Love that paint - got to get some!
Who cares if anybody’s mad let them stay mad you’re doing your thing and I like it 😊
Oh Kathy Jo you are so creative!
"What's this shelllllf?!?" is my favorite moment. So cute!
The only thing I have to say that people will say is ‘negative’…is that everyon keeps saying it’s a colonial piece, when it’s not, it’s 50’s mass produced maple American. That’s it!…but GREAT JOB, love what you did. So much work!!!
It is actually from the 60's.
You are running a business. Your decisions are what sells best in your area. Just plug your ears to other’s opinions. You gave this piece new life and purpose.❤
Deep blue, WOW bold 🤩
You are really brave to paint without any drop cloth/paper under the project. I love to paint but, I get on me, my clothes and what is under the project! It still looks great!
Super talented, Many wish they had your talent. You keep going.Job well don!!
Thank you very much!
A ‘hutch’ is the TOP upper part of a two piece furniture set…the lower part is buffet, console, sideboard etc etc.
Just wondered what she did with the top part.
Used it for 7 years until went to college, my parents moved and I do not know where it went after that 😊
The drawers are dove tailed, so its a well made piece of furniture
Dovetailing is not the sign of quality that it once was. Now days lots of furniture has dovetail joints, but are made of a soft wood, not at AI like dovetailing the oak joints of yesteryears.
@@StuckinNormalcheap wood or not, I'd rather see dovetailing than stapled sides.
