This movie holds up decades later. A true classic.

Haha I wonder how they would react to Thing (1982). That movie is a practical-effect titan.
When the predator looks at Arnold's skull I always viewed it as it was captivated by his skull as he was a worthy prey but also had a realization that he was without weapons or armor. So the predator removed his technology so he could defeat him hand to hand and feel deserving of that skull trophy.

John McTiernan directed Predator in 1987 and Die Hard in in 1988, basically two of the most perfect action movies ever made. You can't beat a 1-2 combo like that.

Billy's fight was his last stand. He takes the spirit bag from his neck and raps it over his fighting hand. The cut-over chest was him showing his bravery and not allowing his enemy first blood.
Billy was always my favourite character... Big respect for his culture.
The cut also floods his body with adrenaline which boosts his strength and perception going into the fight.

Fun fact: many people who worked on this film were legit nervous around Sonny Landham, the actor who played Billy. He was unpredictable so the film's insurance agency actually hired a bodyguard to follow him...for the safety of everyone else.
He was arrested and convicted on federal charges of making threatening and obscene phone calls to his wife a decade after this film.
This makes me wonder how his behavior was on the set of the movie 48 Hours

To me the moment with the most gravity was when Billy said he was scared. This was a guy who was fearless among a team of elite seasoned high-end professionals. They had served for likely decades and had nerves of steel. Billy was an exceptional tracker and as they said "was afraid of no man". Yet for him to come clean for the first time in years that he was in fact...."afraid" must have absolutely destroyed their morale and forced them to confront the reality they would likely all die. Despite their years of experience, confidence, teamwork, they are just a prey and are mostly powerless to stop what's coming for all of them.
The actor who played the Predator was Kevin Peter Hall. He also had a small part as the black chopper pilot at the end. Kevin Peter Hall also played Harry in Harry And The Henderson's. A comedy about a family camping trip where they find, and make friends with, Bigfoot. In the early 1990s, Kevin Peter Hall was in a bad car accident and was rushed to the hospital. During surgery he was accidentally given contaminated blood and passed away. Everyone who worked with him said he was the nicest guy in the world. RIP KEVIN PETER HALL

The guy that played the Predator "Kevin Peter Hall" was 7 feet 2 inches, and here's something a lot of people didn't know, he was also the Helicopter pilot, he was also in Harry and the Hendersons that same year as Harry, he appeared in a lot of movies in his short life before dying of AIDS from a blood transfusion during surgery for injuries he sustained in a car accident at the young age of 35, 2 years after making Predator 2
For a long time I too was confused about why Billy cuts himself. Recently it was explained to me. He was denying the Predator the opportunity to draw first blood.
I can also confirm that the Predator did grant Billy a duel just as he does with Dutch at the end if the film.

During my first year at college, my roommate was a hardcore collector of Predator, Aliens, Alien vs. Predator comics. One comic from his collection told the story of Billy's duel with the Predator.
Billy was native American, I always assumed it was a warrior blood combat ritual.

I too wondered about that for decades... But when I heard about "First Blood", it makes perfect sense. One of the most perfect action movies ever.
I've got good news. God is good because He gives His blessings to everyone, whether they be good or bad. but everyone has at least, told a lie, or stolen something in their life. and that makes them sinners, and God will not allow sinners in heaven; in His presence, because He is holy. so, God has to punish the sinners in hell, because God is severe and just. but God is also love and He made a way for some to be saved from His wrath. here are the steps:
1. admit that you're a sinner and are lost.
2. realize that the penalty of sin is death (hell).
3. believe that Jesus (who is God) died on the cross, was buried, then rose from the grave, to pay the penalty for man's past, present, and future sins.
4. trust Christ alone as your Savior, and not on your own good deeds to get you to heaven (nor a combination of faith and your self-righteous works).
5. pray to God NOW that you're accepting Christ's free gift of salvation because if you die before making this decision, it's too late, and you'll 🔥🥵😈
6. and to be a disciple, tell people about Jesus, read the bible, go to church regularly to know God's will for your life.

Arnold's friend Dillion in the movie is the great Carl Weathers. He played Apollo Creed in Rocky. Another Sci-fi Arnold movie is "Total Recall", but my favorite Arnold movies are the "Conan The Barbarian" movies, "Twins" and "Kindergarten Cop". The reason he didn't many lines in the first Terminator movie because he was not yet comfortable speaking English on screen because of his accent or so I heard. I could be wrong about that. Obviously he got over that. 😄

Another great action movie with Arnold is "True Lies". A must view. Jesse "The Body" Ventura was the guy carrying "Old Painless". He is a former U.S. Navy Seal, Professional Wrestler, and former Governor of Minnesota. Arnold also went on to be elected Governor of California.
Carl Weathers never became governor.

For a movie that is now 35 years old you can see clearly it still holds up well even today. I remember going to see this movie at the cinema in 1987 along with many others at that time with friends. It was a great year for big block buster action films. Predator is one of my all time favourites to this day.
The 80s in general was a great decade for blockbusters and iconic, memorable films.
My mom took me to see this at a drive in since it was rated R...i saw a double feature of this and Beverley Hills Cop 2...great memory
Even TV! Here in NY, all these movies were on Channel 5, 9, 11, TBS and HBO. Every weekend these channels had great movies on.

Man, one of my top action movies growing up. Seeing people going in blind to this movie and uncovering the Predator was awesome.
Hey guys. The guy who got them into this was Carl Weathers. If you watched the Rocky movies, he played Apollo Creed. The guy with the big chaw who didn't have time to bleed was Jesse (the body) Ventura. He was a professional wrestler before he became an actor. He was also Governor of Minnesota at one time. He was also a member of a UDT (underwater demolition team) in the Navy. Same training as the SEALs. Though he was never chosen for a SEAL Team. Nice reaction vid. You hung right in there Amber.
I am pretty sure Ventura also wrote an autobiographical book called I Ain't Got Time To Bleed and, even though I've seen this movie once, I hadn't been aware it was a line from this film.
Not only did this movie give us a future Governor of Minnesota, but also a future Governor of California.
I think the Predator showing himself was a sign of respect. Especially when he took off his helmet to let his prey see his face.
Did he show that same respect to billy?

There’s a comic story that depicts Billy’s last stand. I don’t have but I’m going to look for it now that I heard about it.
One thing I really like about the structure of "Predator" is that it kind of bookends. In the first half of the movie, Arnold and his group are prey being hunted. The predator is invisible, hides in (and jumps through) the trees, and stalks and surprises them. At one point, Arnold's group gets freaked out and shoots wildly into the jungle at something they can't see, etc. Later, though, Arnold flips the script and begins hunting the predator. He is invisible to it (covered in the mud), hides in (and jumps through) the trees, and stalks and surprises the predator several times. The predator gets so freaked out at one point, it starts shooting wildly into the jungle at something it can't see. The hunted becomes the hunter and the Predator goes through almost exactly what Arnold and his group did.
Although 2nd film shows him as an amateur, because 2nd predator faced with similar situation simply changed settings on his visor.

"True Lies" was the Number 3 box office hit of 1994 and is currently rated on Amazon Prime Video at 4.5 stars. If you want to see Arnold Schwarzenegger in a well made action/comedy/spy film, this one (at 140 minutes long) will give you a a bit better look at of Arnold's acting range.

The machine used old painless in Predator is very similar to the one Arnold uses in Terminator 2 when he is shooting the police cars from the building window.
Fun fact… my mother was adopted, and her adopted great grandfather, Alfred Newman, wrote the Fox fanfare song. His nephew was Randy Newman, who was a famous composer as well. My mother’s adopted father was Richard Newman, Randy’s 2nd cousin
A movie made 35 years ago...and the special effects still manage to stand up today. This is one of those movies that a few years ago it would have been difficult to find someone who wasn't already familiar with the storyline...let alone someone who hadn't seen it. You're lucky to have seen the movie "fresh", like those of us who originally saw it in the theater! 👍
The effects are still GOOD, but I truly believe the camo effect could be done a lot better today. The effects are cleaner in the more recent movies, but they're still designed based on the original effects rather than being redesigned from scratch.

I know that neither my niece or my nephew have seen Predator even though they are in their mid twenties. They just don't watch movies often, and they usually watch newer ones when they do. Hell, ja couple days ago I was talking to someone who was almost thirty and found that he hadn't even heard of the movie "So I Married An Axe Murderer"!!! Let's face it, a lot of movies from 20+ years ago that were seen or known by most people back then are now unknown by many.
lol "The effects still manage to stand up today" no shit, it's not hard for practical effects to stand up to cartoon cgi and green screen bullshit.
@@FUCKINGENIOUS Yeah. CGI can be done right, and when it' is it's practically seamless. But with today's processing power there are too many movies that rely on CGI effects portraying impossible/unrealistic stunts.
Restrained use of CGI can yield phenomenal effects. When you find yourself uncertain whether something was CGI or not is CGI at its best!
What I loved about the effects in predator is that they didn't try to do more than what they knew they could make look good. I can't see how they could improve on what they gave us when the predator's faceplate came off. The practical effects used for the predators face would not be improved by CGI. Stan Wilson outdid himself...incredible work.
"Get to da choppa!" This movie is one of the top 5 hardcore action flicks of all time.
I'd like to highly recommend "Ben Hur" (1959) - a movie that won 11 Oscars. It offers an outstanding performance by Charlton Heston and a fantastic supporting cast, incredible music, and the most ambitious movie sets and stunts since the end of the silent film era. Easily a top candidate for the greatest movie ever made.

Absolutely one of the most well put together action films ever! The Actors, the special effects, the cinematography, the sound design, the direction and the music just made this an amazing film. I saw this one in the theatre during it's original run and it's still one of my favourites!!

Billy was my favorite character in predator.. not only was he a bad ass Indian tracker but he could sense the predator… and Hawkins told him those jokes because he liked his laugh lol also he went out one on one not running the predator respected that so much he used Billy’s laugh in the end

The dreads are basically sensory organs. They start as thinner strands, but when young, the predators (yautja) go through a painful process of forcing those strands to bond together, but they help sense differences in atmospheric pressure around them

One of my all time favourite films. The 80s were chock-a-block with action movies and space/alien movies, and Predator managed to combine the best facets of both. What the space movies often lacked was a strong motivation for the alien villain other than they just wanted to kill the human characters. The Predator movie took a much more intelligent approach and constructed this story of the Predator being an advanced alien being who hunts other races for sport - much like how humans go on safari. And as aggressive and brutal as they are, their species still has a code of honor which it respects - it will generally fight on equal terms (hand to hand, armed combat vs armed combat, etc) and as we see in later films it respects and rewards those who can overcome a Predator.
Billy was the only one who really got a sense of what the Predator was, and his sioux-Indian heritage & spiritualism is often hinted at via his tracking skills and apparent sixth sense that something unseen is hunting the team. He was the first to cast aside his guns and seek to engage the Predator in a more primitive form of combat (machete) which would perhaps level the playing field for him, but it still wasn't the right approach. It was Dutch who finally deduced that the only way to beat the Predator was to use all its own tactics against it; stealth, camouflage, assorted traps/weapons - and patience.
I think that huge suspended tree trunk was intended to power the actual trap, which was probably spikes. But when the Predator unknowingly stood under the trunk, it became a trap in itself, and Dutch triggered it on the other side.
100%, it was a counterweight to the trap, which may have been another net, or as you said a spike trap.
I love how the predator mimics Billy's laugh at the end.
The guy with the Minigun is Jessie ‘The Body’ Ventura. He’s a retired WWF wrestler, part time actor, and he was the 38th governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003.
And Jesse Ventura was a Navy SEAL before he was a wrestler.

Billy had one of the most sad deaths in action movie history. i would have loved if he could a really good last stand fight.
The best part of the movie is that the main characters have a deep history together and they are sharing it with the audience. It makes you understand their actions, for example why mac is going to revenge his friend despite they would be better off staying together.

No that is not the Reading Rainbow guy. But if you ever watch Happy Gilmore, he's in that, and if you watch The Mandalorian I'm pretty sure he's in that too. And he's been in a whole bunch of other stuff.
Great movie. The pilot in the chopper at the end of the movie is actually the guy who plays the Predator. Van Damme was suppose to play the Predator but he quit cause he could not handle the suite. You should watch The Running Man 1987 another Arnold great underrated movie that came out the same year and was overshadowed by this movie.

an absolute lesson in how to do an action movie. no hidden messages just brilliant tempo, timing and action. the ultimate bad asses turning into scared prey is such a brilliant character arc. When the predator looks at Dutchs' skull at the end the predator sees him as a worthy adversary and so takes his helmet off and fights him hand to hand. without doubt one of the best movies. you guys were both on the edge of your seats!
Carl Weathers is the guy you said looked familiar, and thought was the Reading Rainbow guy. He is a legend. He played Apollo in Rocky, amongst many other things.
Arnold’s acting in the terminator was on point, he was playing an emotionless machine after all.
Very true, he really thought about how a machine would move and moved like that, the way his eyes move and then his head, that was Arnold, other things. He really put thought into the Terminator.
If you want a good Arnold movie do "True Lies". He plays a spy... the comedy in it is hilarious. When he is under the power of truth serum it is so good.... 😁 You also get to see Jamie Lee Curtis as his wife. Tom Arnold as his partner... his scene with the lamp post is so great... 😁

The bits about Billy being able to sense the Predator remind me that back when my little sister used to do search and rescue, she had to learn tracking, and she said that the really good trackers could pick up on subtle differences that indicated that someone had passed through an area that everyone else would miss.

I like Predator 2 even more, primarily because Danny Glover is such an amazing actor.
I love it too, but in Predator 2 it feels like it's a cop chasing someone who wins through perseverance. Whereas in Predator and Prey, it feels very much like one of the predators got killed because they hunted a predator. Not going to spoil anything but Prey's ending in particular seems to emphasize this.

The Predator has been taking them out one by one whenever they’re separated. Either it glitched it’s camouflage accidentally or on purpose in order to lead Mac and Dillion away from the others.
They’re first set of booby traps were man made wire and rope, etc. The Predator could see those. The second set are set using nature: vines, logs, hemp rope nets. They’re hoping it won’t be able to see the difference between the traps and the jungle.
The Alien and Predator movies are some of my all time favorite movies. They range in quality from excellent to flat out bad, but all were fundamental in my childhood development.
Predator is not a good indication of what a squad of dudes would actually do, nobody is going to waltz into an enemy camp and plant c4 on a truck serving as a generator and blow it up with sentries everywhere while he's doing it. Nobody shoots from the hip. Grenades fired from grenade launchers have to go a certain distance before they explode. They don't even arm themselves until they've turned so many times out of the barrel. A minigun and the ammo you would need to carry for a sustained firefight would weigh to much for any one man to carry. The minigun shoots so fast he'd be out of ammo in seconds.
That said, Predator is one of the funnest movies ever made. When you've been in the services, just about every 80s or 90s action movie is marred by the dreaded "how things really work," but overall it doesn't really detract from the film.
Most of the guys in the movie were veterans. Of the top of my head I know Arnie (in his own country), and the guys that play Poncho and Billy were vets, as was Jesse Ventura (the dude with the minigun). Ventura was actually in the precursor to the seals in the UDTs. So even though the action isn't really how things would be done, the guys playing them play the roles well.
The Predator, along with the Alien from its respective series, are two of the best sci fi creature designs in hollywood. The predator has that it is somewhat familiar to humanity design, and strikes a balance of being something that is way more high tech than we are, yet also seems to call back to primitive mankind with our hunter/gatherer background.
It also is almost like two movies. You get your typical Arnie vs everyone (this time with buddies) first half, and then pred vs arnie (and buddies) second half. At the end of the movie when Arnie has to go primal vs the Pred, they originally wanted Arnie to kick the preds ass in one on one combat. Arnie was actually the one that turned that down, and the movie is better for it. I could go long time talking about this movie, but again I'm always happy to see the younger generation enjoying films of my youth. Keep up the good work, you guys are doing great.

Even though I like this one more, Predator 2 is definitely worth watching as well. Another great action/sci-fi movie that came out the same year as this one was Robocop, also amazing. For more '80s Arnold though, Commando (1985) and his first big movie Conan The Barbarian (1982) are must sees!

Yeah, Predator 2 is quality... amusingly, it even borrowed some ideas and lore form the Predator comic book from Dark Horse that came after the original movie.

Predator didn't realize he was going against the dam Terminator, the Predator was beaten and inorder not to become Arnold's trophy...it destroyed all evidence of itself.

I think this is one of the early movies that utilizes strong men unskilled in acting (like Arnold and Jesse Ventura) perfectly. I guess, the proper script, casting and directing can mitigate their shortcomings. They were perfect for their roles.

- It's interesting to me that you mentioned Carl Weathers had a part in a show called " Star Wars: The Mandalorian " (Haven't seen this show yet) - but perhaps in oversight, you didn't mention the reason he was probably in that show was most likely because in the Original Star Wars Trilogy ( Episodes IV, V & VI ) he already had a part in those movies named " Lando Calrusian " - I imagine the character he probably plays in this "Mandalorian" is his same original character Lando Calrusian from those first famous movies, but since I haven't seen it, I could be mistaken; although I would find it super weird for him to be cast in any Star Wars franchise film and NOT be playing Lando.

*Kevin Peter Hall* -- who played _the_ Predator in this -- also played the infinitely more likeable Harry in _Harry and the Hendersons_ the same year this movie came out. It's an absolutely adorable movie that's definitely worth a watch, if you haven't seen it yet -- and a great comeback from the damage _Predator_ does to your psyche. 😄
Jean Claude Van Damme was originally given the part but I think the suit was too hot for him. Also, he wasn't really large enough so I think it worked out much better in the end.
Harry and the Hendersons is one of those movie that defines the 80s. It should be released in theaters again. It's perfection.
He also played one of the helicopter pilots at the end of this movie. At 7 feet, he could barely fit in the cockpit.
My fave part was, "...like a bahhh...oh it was a bomb." LOL
Fun fact. At the end of the movie, the black gentleman piloting the helicopter was the same guy who and played "The Predator." His name is Kevin Peter Hall. EVERYONE on set felt bad for him cause he had to run around in the sweltering Mexican jungle in a latex suit. He was paid really well but the producer and the director wanted to give him some screen time without the costume.
This movie starred two actors who went on to become Governors Arnold (California) and Jesse Ventura (Minnesota). Jesse played Blane "I ain't got time to bleed"
Sonny Landham (Billy) ran for governor in Kentucky too.

There are so many times in life when I wish I could unwatch a movie or unhear a song just so I could experience it again for the first time. That is why I appreciate your reactions. It gives me that vicarious thrill of experiencing it for the first time again. With Halloween approaching and in the spirit of the holiday I would love to see what you think of Poltergeist (1982 version only. The newer 2015 remake is terrible). I loved this movie from the time I first saw it around 8 years old. Too young? Maybe? It's a perfect haunted house movie in my opinion. It's not too scary, has a great story and execution, and is super iconic. Okay, maybe it does have some frights in it, but it's so fun. In the meantime thanks for the content. Fun stuff.

I just realized late last night that BOTH of you have coached sports and i know you guys LOVE music. So it popped into my brain that you guys would love the movie "Visionquest." it's about a high school wrestler who comes of age while taking on the best wrestler in the state. I'm certain you guys will enjoy the music and the movie !

Thirty years ago when I first saw this movie, my reactions were very similar to yours.
Thing I've always loved about this movie was the subtle reversal of fortune:
* In the beginning, the Predator was invisible to Human vision, but could see the Humans easily because of their body heat. At the end, Arnold was invisible to the Predator because the mud disguised his body heat (note: In real life that wouldn't work more than a minute or two, because the body heat would just warm up the cool mud).
* Human blood was easily visible to it because its at body temp when it first leaks. A predator's blood is easily visible to Humans after it leaks.
* Water ruins the Predator's camo by shorting out the device somehow. Water also ruins Arnold's camo by washing off the mud.
* When the Humans can't see it but know it's there, they mow down a swath of jungle blind-firing their weapons, and miss the Predator. When the Predator knows Arnold is there but can't see him, it mows down a swath of jungle with its shoulder gun, and misses Arnold.
The thing is a sport hunter, a trophy hunter. It uses high tech to pretend that it's doing a dangerous hunt, kills creatures that can't possibly defend against it, and takes trophies from its prey, just like Human trophy hunters use camo, scent masker, binoculars, telescopic sights, and high-power rifles to kill stuff that can't possible defend against them, like deer, elephants, even predatory creatures like lions and tigers.
Watch Predator 2. You learn more about the creatures. And it stars Danny Glover!

For a very different take on an alien I highly recommend John Carpenter's "Starman" starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen. It's a beautiful, brilliant film with a breathtaking score by Jack Nitzsche. I guarantee you'll love it!
I also liked "The Last Starfighter".
I wasn't born until 1997 and Starman is one of my favourite films ever. I still cry when he brings the deer back to life lol
You always manage to get big laughs out of me - Amber, when she chickens out by the slightest sight of blood/scare and J, when he tries to stay stoic and keeping it cool, despite having his skin crawl 😁 Another great reaction video by my favorite TH-cam couple! This is 80s moviemaking at its best...big, loud, messy, raw, and totally testosterone-filled, with no apologies but a damn good result. Some Arnold suggestions: Commando, Total Recall, Conan The Barbarian, True Lies, or Twins (a comedy). Keep up the good work!

Wow. Thank you SO much. You ever wish you could watch a favorite movie again for the first time, when you were on the rollercoaster of not knowing what's coming as the story hits the highs and lows?
I have loved this movie since I saw it in the theater in 1987, and today you two have given me back a measure of that first time feeling. Watching you go through the thrill of realization when a key part of the story starts making sense. The fact that they are not being stalked by another man. When you realize their peril, that they are being taken out one by one. When you learn it is all about taking trophies. Amber & Jay, you gave me shivers today, taking us along on this ride with you through all those OMG moments. Can't wait to see what you guys watch next!
BTW, the first movie was definitely the best in the franchise. afterwards I would recommend these films in this order...
Predator 2 (1990) - The next best movie in the franchise. Cheesy characters in a really fun way until shit gets serious.
Predators (2010) - Better than it gets credit for, shows the length which the Predators will go to get their hunt on.
The Predator (2018) - Weakest of the four Predator-only films, cheesy but there is worse 'popcorn entertainment' out there.
Aliens vs Predator... Two films that lean more towards the horror side of action films. Amber may not care much for them.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004) - I actually enjoyed this one, the better of these films.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007) - Pushes the horror aspect much more, feels like they were just cashing in on the franchise.
Awwwww you guys watching this reminded me of the first time I watched it. The surprise and the suspense of not knowing that's happening. I watched this film back in the 80's.... when I was 10!
Was fortunate to catch in the theater in 87 and this without a doubt is Arnold’s best acting performance.
His best acting performance to that date? Absolutely.
His best acting performance over his full career? Debatable, but it’s definitely in the top five.
That awesome gun that the big guy is using is an M134 Minigun (ironically enough). It's a 7.62mm calibre, 6-barrelled, electrically-driven 'Gatling Gun' that can fire up to 6,000 rounds per minute, although they're usually governed down to 3000 rpm. They're most often mounted as helicopter door guns, where the high rate of fire compensates somewhat for the low accuracy of shooting from a moving helicopter. You also see them on ground vehicles and ships too. That man-portable system with the ammo in the backpack was a real thing (a prototype at least) but it's not very practical because the high rate of fire means it rips through all the ammo in a heartbeat. The backpack only holds about 500 rounds so you only get about 10 seconds of firing out of it, after which it's a LOT of dead weight to carry around.
They make a great joke abut it in one of the Expendable movies.

@9:34, Billy the Native American tracker is mystically gifted. It's not explicitly mentioned in this movie. But in the novelization that was written at the time of the film's release Billy heritage and his family's spiritual gifts are spelled out. For example, the pouch or medicine bag around his neck was given to him by his grandfather. It was meant to protect him in battle. If you notice Billy doesn't die until he takes it off later to face the Predator.
A recurring theme in the first Predator movies, is that people with deep connections to the mystical or spiritual can sense the presence of the Predators. In some cases they know something is off. In some other cases like in this movie, they know that what is in their vicinity is not human...or benevolent.
Despite wearing his grandfathers gift, Billy didn't truly believe in it before this mission. That is why he is kinda in a fog for most of the movie, he is experiencing sensory input he had never learned to process.
There's a fan theory that he's descended from the lead character in Prey. Unless it was mentioned he is of a different tribe.
He didn't take it off, he wrapped it around his hand. He still had it with him at his death.

Not to say I’m an expert on Native American magic. But I believe that was his intent in the final scene.
@@mhill781 I’ve heard that as well. I believe the script for Prey confirms that Billy is actually the reincarnation of her brother Taabe. Taabe died bravely fighting a Predator and injured it several times before he died.
This means Billy’s connection with the spiritual and mystical planes is even stronger than the original novel supposed. He has essentially fought these beings across multiple lifetimes.

To my understanding, Billy cut himself with the knife in order to draw first blood. In some cultures (not strictly American Indian) it symbolizes both a lack of fear of pain and denying the enemy the honor of getting the first hit in; similar to the mode for thinking behind seppuku in samurai culture: “I deny you the glory of taking my honor from me.”
Wasn't he supposed to be Lakota? Pain and bleeding has ceremonial meaning in several different contexts in their culture anyway. I'm thinking the Sun Dance and things like that.

A great movie with not just 1 but 2 state governors, Arnold of course was the governor of California, and Jessie Ventura was Minnesota's governor who didn't have time to bleed. This is still my favorite of all of the predator movies, although the new Prey is a close second.
