      The rest of the Terminator franchise are a bit more so-so, but if you're into the setting you should definitely see all of them at least once, if just to make your opinion about them.

    You're spot-on about Kyle not having seen the world like this. There's a deleted scene where he has a bit of a meltdown about it. Totally worth looking up. And since I know you've seen the sequel it's safe to say there's also a deleted scene at the end of this one that shows that shows that the place Sara crushed the terminator was actually Cyberdine who would go on to make Skynet. So _both_ John and Skynet wouldn't have existed without this time travel. It's a real chicken-and-the-egg puzzle.

    • @trequor
      @trequor 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      My favourite thing about this movie is that it's a *closed loop* . The sequel opens up a whole can of worms, but this movie works perfectly with the time travel creating a closed loop of causality where everything checks out.

      @@hzhang1228usually, when there's a paradox like this, I feel the easiest answer is that before the paradox occurred, things were slightly different.
      Skynet was created by SOMEONE.
      SOMEONE conceived John with Sarah.
      Judgement Day happened and John ended Skynet.
      When Skynet tried to change the past, and John sent Kyle to stop the Terminator, they set the paradox in motion and this timeline is how things settled out.

      On the disc extras, Cameron tells the story of meeting Arnold. The studio was insisting that there be a name in the picture, to draw people. Cameron assumed that Arnold wanted to play the hero part. Cameron was still new, this was his first big movie, so he didn't have enough clout to tell the studio no. So, he figured the only way to keep Arnold from stealing the hero role would be if Cameron pissed Arnold off so bad that Arnold would tell the studio that he didn't want the part.
      Cameron said that when he left for the meeting, he told his roommate, "I'm on my way to pick a fight with Arnold Schwarzenegger."
      After meeting him, learning that he wanted the Terminator part, and finding how invested he was in the story, they ended up becoming fast friends.

      Exactly. multiple paradox's in this movie. Kyle will exist even though he dies in the past. John knows that not only does someone have to go back in time to protect Sarah in order for John to even exist, but it can only be Kyle. Also John, being the first iteration in his existence overall existence, knows that he will be created again while he still actually lives his current life. AND if John makes it to old age (and events repeat themselves as they would have to in at least one of the possible timelines), he would know that there is likely three of him in existence concurrently. AND this would require J1 to now conceal his identity from J2 and all who may know him, so that J2 can organically arrive at the right decision that allowed him to exist at all.
      I'm sure there are more paradoxes to consider if I put my mind to it, but it's already making my head hurt.

Things do seem to play-out somewhat differently in the other films from what's described by Kyle in this film. Btw, John was born in 1984 (when this film takes place) or maybe 85 depending on what time of year this is. Kyle wound have been born in the 2000s. This film was Arnold Schwarzenegger's first major role. And James Cameron's first major direction. The cast might be familiar. The lead actor, Michael Biehn, who played the main role here (as Kyle Reese), later appeared in Aliens as Corporal Hicks. Lance Henriksen, who played the supporting role of the police sergeant in The Terminator, played the role of Bishop the android in Aliens. Finally - but not least - , the great Bill Paxton (R.I.P) also first appeared in The Terminator. He was the blue-haired punk that the Terminator killed first. He was Private Hudson, the loud-mouthed macho, in Aliens.
    So Cameron kept his favorite actors for later. Cameron made his breakthrough with The Terminator, not with Titanic or Avatar.

    'Terminator' is a perfect great 80s action movie, but honestly I feel like its true purpose was to set things up for 'Terminator 2', which is one of the greatest action films of all time (and was made in the early 90s with much better special effects technology, a bigger budget, and a better soundtrack).
    Also, Michael Biehn (who played Kyle Reese) is one of the most underrated actors of all time.

      As far as I know, the scenario of T2 was originally intended for T1, but they just couldn't make it this way due to technological limitations. If you look closely, the main plot line is basically the same between T1 and T2, so it could be considered as a remake.

      So he's back, but he's the hero (made no sense), spouting every cliched one-liner in the book (just the sort of thing 'Ahnold' would think was the coolest, cleverest ever).
      The kid was annoying. And they all lived happily ever after (complete with corny 'thumbs up' heroic sacrifice by the big meathead). Pure cheese.

    The craziest thing about this movie is that Skynet created itself as well as John. Skynet sending the Terminator back into the past was how skynet was created in the first place, from the remains of the Terminator. John was only ever born because Kyle was sent back to protect Sarah from the Terminator. Its the Terminator paradox.

    • @RikoguSnow
      @RikoguSnow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      As much as I love the second movie, it really messed up the whole series. The whole point of the plot in the first movie was that the future couldn't be changed. T2 changed that and made the Terminator universe have time travel more Back to the Future style. The recovered terminator wasn't how Skynet came into being, it just jumped Cyberdyne's tech forward faster than it developed the "first" time, according to T2's logic.
      Like I said, I love T2, one of the best action movies of all time, but it's plot is one of the biggest reasons why all the sequels didn't measure up to the first two, in my opinion. If they had stuck with the time travel logic of the first movie, I think it would have been so much easier for the writers to make progressive sequels leading up to the end of the war with the machines.

    • @Enigmatic..
      @Enigmatic.. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RikoguSnow Hmm i don't know. It wouldn't have been Skynet if they hadn't used the remains of the first terminator. There is no evidence to suggest that Skynet would have been created without it. If there was some sort of A.I created without the remains of the first Terminator there is also no evidence it would have become self aware. The problem is, was the plot of T2 the actual plot of the story from the start or was it thought up after the first movie. Because there was no book the movie was based on its hard to know the writers intentions. It was a rip off of an outer limits episode which was an adaptation of a short story called Soldier from Tomorrow.

      @@TomMagiatzis I'm not sure if you are trying to argue against my point or not, but regardless of whether or not you factor in the deleted scene that doesn't change my point at all. With or without the deleted scene, everything in the first movie suggests that the timeline could not be altered with time travel.

    24:32 Fun fact, that shot of the Terminator rising from the flames was in fact the nightmare that James Cameron had while he was brainstorming movie ideas. He saw a machine, not of this current era, rising from hell and getting ready to slaughter him. He woke up and he was inspired to write the script for this movie.

    The original Terminator was considered a low budget film- costing around 7 million dollars at the time it was made. That is why the terminator chassis stop motion at the end looked a bit cheap. They probably couldn’t afford to shoot the effect at the full 24 frames per second to make the animation look smoother.
    Terminator was a low budget flick, and its sequel, Terminator 2, was (at the time) the most expensive film ever made. The technological innovations in T2, by ILM, led directly to the tech needed to make the CGI dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.

      In the 80s as a kid that unstoppable stop motion Terminator "skeleton" closing in terrified me.
      Of course this generation grew up in Cgi ocean.
      They used stop motion for Star wars imperial walkers and the last battle of the Thing movie. But sadly it was cut short. Also terrifying.

      @@naldow8555 don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with the stop motion. It is just that out of the rest of the film, it suffers the most because of their budget constraints.
      If the budget had been higher, they could have had more time animating. Time is money, especially for animation.

Your willingness to invest, to immerse in the story and feel what the characters are feeling - even if sci fi is not your thing, even if it's from 1984 and shows its age in the technical aspects - is awesome. I think Terminator is one of the best sci fi films ever made, but often, non-fans can't suspend their disbelief enough to appreciate it, so I appreciate your coming to the film with an open heart.
