I agree, but would also add that he captures that vibe, while still making the character 100% his own rather than just being a copy or imitating Indiana Jones.
A bit of trivia: In the scene in the prison when Rick was being hanged. The apparatus holding onto Brendan Fraser failed and the rope was actually choking him. Fraser passed out and had to be revived. He came very close to actually dying on that set. But being the trooper he is, he got back up and finished the scene. One issue Brendan had in the aftermath of filming this trilogy, was having done his own stunts he ended up with bad back issues and had to undergo several surgeries to fix the issues. That left him unable to work for a goodly portion of the 2000s. Also he was sexually assaulted by a member of the voting board of the Golden Globes and blacklisted as he did call out the guy. After the Golden Globes were called on the carpet for their own conduct, Brendan Fraser was vindicated after he made his "Me Too" allegation public. In the aftermath of that, he was offered the role in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" and it was for that film he won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Oscar. He is now very sought after and has stated he'd be willing to come back as Rick O'Connell.

He had been blacklisted after he claimed he'd been sexually assaulted by the former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Fraser was in another really fun movie in 1999, "Blast from the Past", which I also recommend. But I'll always remember him best from "George of the Jungle".
Growing up I watched George of the Jungle and Dudley Doright quite a lot. As I got to my teens I watched the Mummy movies more. After I hit my 20s I realized how much I enjoyed Brendan Frasier, so I went back and found more of his movies. Blast from the Past is definitely worth a watch.
@@navidhudson7065 You know what's weird is all these great films of the early 90's are like 6/10 or maybe 7/10 on IMDB..but they were huge when they were out, people loved them. People still love them when they see them. If there's a film made today that's a 6/10, it's unwatchable trash.
Forget Crystal Skulls and Dials of Destiny, The Mummy is the Indiana Jones sequel that we didn't know we needed in 99 and the one we wish we could get again in 23. The mix of action, comedy, scares, and history is also basically the template for Pirates of the Caribbean. So glad you two seemed to have fun with it!
100% yes! I don't want writers to just copy what was done before, but between Raiders, Last Crusade, and Mummy '99, that's a heck of a crib sheet for how to do adventure movies right.
@@passionsquietrage I would argue writing and acting are two single most important things in the movie so that's your answer right there but they are simply boring movies. I saw them both once or twice in life on TV and I don't feel any desire to see them again. The only funny thing I remember from mummy 3 is literally the last sentence. Jonathan said he will go somewhere else to never see mummies again. Like Peru. Soon after, there were mummies in Peru. The mummy 1 and 2 on the other hand are timeless classics that I rewatch every time I see another TH-cam reaction and I am still entertained by them. I admit that's subjective but I am willing to bet the majority of the fan base would agree with me.
@@martind5653 I guess there wasn't enough action and that's why it was boring to some. But the writing and acting weren't that bad, at least I didn't feel like they were. I agree that writing and acting are two of the most important parts of a movie, but I wanted to see if there was a reason other than those that made the movie bad.
"That happens a lot around here." My favorite, funniest line in the movie! (I enjoy meta-humor) I really enjoy this movie and I'm glad you liked it too.
I knew Cassie and Carly would love this movie! The romance and the happy ending is exactly their kind of thing. I know they said they don't necessarily need to watch the sequels but I do think they would at least appreciate the relationship between Rick and Evie in The Mummy Returns too. This is also the only Mummy reaction I've seen that leaves in Rick's line "that happens a lot around here".
This is, quite easily, one of my FAVOURITE movies of all time, along with its sequel. Brendan Fraser is an absolute gem, and his chemistry with Rachel Weisz (Evelyn) is fantastic. It carries on to the second movie as well, and her not being in the third was one of the reasons why it wasn't good at all. Brendan was built for these roles and it's a travesty he didn't explode more in popularity around that time. Handsome, dashing, daring and hilarious. He's still very good today and I always wish him the best.
Brendan was a young star of the 90s, coming up with the likes of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Good comedic work in Airheads, Blast from the Past and Encino Man. Even an early dramatic role in School Ties.
As others have said, the second one is really worth watching. It deepens the story, shows a ton of character development, and its got all the fun of ancient Egypt as well. I recommend!
This movie is so great. It walks the fine line between comedy, horror and adventure. Even now looking back on it, it's incredible just HOW good it is and how well it holds up.
I remember being amazed by the special effects when I saw this in the theater. Especially when the fully decayed mummy was lit by the torch light. Up until then, CGI characters tended to stand out quite badly.
An amazing cinematography, funny, scary, Jerry Goldsmith's score, Rachel Weisz, a very impressive CGI for the time... Hollywood struggles to make movies like this one nowadays.
today they could only do endless remakes and spin offs- actually The Mummy is a remake as well but back in the days they actually had the ability to make good remakes
progressivism isn't the problem it's how they do it that's the problem. It's not really woke but rather FAKE woke. It's not intelligent story telling but rather left wing pandering that treats you like a bad person if you don't agree. Maga is the same. Both sides have become a religion. It's rather ridiculous when they act like you're not allowed to disagree with them. @@michaeldmcgee4499
I think the mummy was to the younger generation what romancing the stone was to our generation. Both so much fun, action, comedy, romance, adventure. Great movies
I was around for Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile and they are okay and fun but they are nowhere near as good and entertaining as The Mummy one and two.
@@Rystefn No joke. The Mummy 2 got in my brain, and there are still bits of it rattling around in there. Fortunately my sisters saved me from the Horror that is The Mummy 3.
So I used to feel like the second one was as weak as Smokey and the Bandit 2. I rewatched it recently and I no longer feel that way. I think I just had unrealistic expectations because I held this movie in such high regard
The main problem with the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was the recasting of Evy. Maria Bello wasn't the same as Rachel Weisz. There are other problems as well, such as some of the writing, effects, some acting, and other things that could've gone better, but not having Rachel was the big one.
The chemistry between Rachel and Brandon is awesome and the third one just didn’t h have that. Also Emotep is another great person in this. If this is a 10/10 I would put mummy returns at 8 or 9/10 as I love it almost as much as this. Then the third well as you said not so much
Glad you ladies liked this one, and glad to see you give a bit of credit to Rachel Weisz. She was perfect as Evie and her chemistry with Brendan Frazier carried this film as much as any other element. Do please watch "The Mummy Returns" as it gives the audience even more of the things they loved about this one! (Then completely skip "The Scorpion King" and "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor". Their suckage level is pretty high...
One of my favorite movies of all time. Watching The Mummy always gave me a comforting feeling. Like being home. Especially when I was in foster care, watching The Mummy made me feel alright. I would put it on in the background and fall asleep to it.
I love this movie. It used to come on every Christmas and was kind of an event in our family. Just a great balance of classic adventure, scary stuff and genuine comedy.
"Well if it ain't my good ole buddy Bennie. I think I'll kill you." This movie was so well paced, the interactions between the primary cast was quick and witty. A great film.
Fun fact: During the opening shootout introducing Rick, he loads his rifle after each shot to keep "rapid-fire" topped off for dire situations. Because the Lebel 1886 features a magazine cutoff that allows soldiers to hold rounds "in reserve." Also, in regards to Rick's hanging.... yes. Brendan Fraser legit did the stunt. But something went wrong, and he was nearly killed but managed to be given CPR in time and made a full recovery. ALSO also, when Carly said that (9:20 - 9:24), I found it pretty ironic, when you find out: 1. The director of this movie did the live action 1994 Jungle Book movie, which heavily inspired Disney's 1999 animated Tarzan, ironically release the same year as this movie. 2. Fraser was actually offer the role to voice the Disney animated version of Tarzan, but got turned down for Tony Goldwyn (Ghost). And Rachel Weisz had got some inspiration from the character Jane to play Evelyn. And I can totally see the similarities in both movies.
This is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. I remember seeing this in the theater with my mother when I was 4... Twice! I liked it so much, that I wanted to see it again, and she obliged. The adventure, comedy, action, and horror elements are all perfectly blended to create a movie that will stand the test of time.
Brendan Fraser almost literally died filming this. During the hanging scene, he was strangling. The stunt didn't work. That was him, not a stunt double. This movie is one of a kind. Everyone is so good in it. From start to finish, it's pure joy.
I watched that then made a home video editing the death in a premiering it to the local elementary claiming it was a historical movie hahaha the look on their faces
I feel for that librarian. I worked at a library when an earthquake hit. Shelves collapsed. Everything was on the floor. It took us six months to get the shelves safely secured and all the books repaired and back in place.
That was fun. I love how invested you both were, and you technically got 2 loves stories. One between 2 evil undead beings and of course the love story that really matters between O'Connel and Evelyn. The effects are quite good for 1999.
Brendan Fraser had such a unique place in the 90s as a funny action hearthrob who was also gentle and respectful. George of the Jungle, Encino Man, The Mummy, Blast From The Past. This character type was formative to me as a tween girl. I would be interested in a Popcorn miniseries where y'all take us on a retrospective commentary of movies you have seen and why they're important and meaningful to YOU.
I LOVE this movie! When I first saw it (aired on a cable TV movie channel in the early 2000s), I made the mistake of watching it in a dark living room in the company of a very affectionate kitten. Without fail, at the tensest parts of the movie, something would rub up against me and I'd almost jump through the ceiling!
I was 5 when this came out, and me and my older brother borrowed it from our video rental store (Blockbuster in the USA i think?) maybe few months after it launched in theaters, and i loved it ever since. And i fell in love with Rachel Weisz... even now, so many years later, i still cant when shes drunk 😅, so adorable.
The Mummy is one of my favorite movies. I love Rachel Weisz as the brainy, beautiful leading lady, Brendan Fraser as the adventurous man of action, and Arnold Vosloo as the chief villain. Also, they did get the mummification practices correct when Evy described how ancient Egyptians removed people's brains (minus a slight omission): They used the hook to also punch a hole in the person's skull so the brain drained out when they were rolled over. And I always get jumpscared when Jonathan is toying around in that damned sarcophagus, no matter how many times I've seen the movie. Also, regarding the debate of camels VS horses: Horses are faster, but camels have higher levels of stamina and are adapted for life in the desert. Even though they DO eventually need to eat and drink, they can survive for 15 days without water and can use the fat in their humps to nourish themselves, they also have long eyelashes to keeps sand and dust out of their eyes and their feet are big and wide to evenly distribute their bodyweight (A dromedary, or one-humped camel weighs between 880-1,320 pounds, while a Bactrian, or two-humped camel weighs between 990-1,100 pounds) so they don't sink in the sand.
Jerry Goldsmith created such a fantastic score (orchestrated music) for this film. Music is so often swept under the rug, but it can make a huge impact on the film.
She was stone cold in some of the darkest scenes in Zodiac. Was pretty impressed. But she's seen so many different kinds of movies back to back to back...not totally surprised. A pro now.
So glad ya’ll finally got to this! It came out on my 10th birthday and my dad took me to see it in theaters, I was hooked!! Got it on VHS and watched it with friends over and over and was ecstatic for The Mummy Returns, which in my opinion was just as fun, adventurous and funny! I really hope you both come back for Returns! You guys would love it.
Mummy #2 is good. Def one of the better sequels in any series. It fills in a lot of the back story of how the Mummy got cursed, etc. Highly recommend for another Popcorn Movie.
seeing this in the theater made for a fun experience; didn’t see them all theatrically, but 1999 had a lot of movies I still like watching today: Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty, Three Kings, Being John Malkovich, Green Mile, the list goes on…
I think The Mummy Returns is pretty good and worth watching. Also if you want a Romantic comedy with Brendan Fraser, I think you will enjoy A Blast from the Past.
This was such an amazing adventure when it came out in 99. This is hands down one of my favorite adventure movies. I can quote this thing front to back. And honestly, The Mummy Returns is a ton of fun, too. There are so many call backs to the first movie in the second one, and Evey and Rock have so much chemistry in that one too. I highly recommend that one as well.
Brendan Fraser is a Canadian. He got into trouble with Canada when he played Dudley Do Right in the movie of that name. They said it made fun of the Mounties.
Classic, One of the best movies ever. This is one of those movies who stands its own over time, like Aliens and Predator. It was made so well, that you really don't notice how long ago it was made. One of the few movies I actually remember going to see in the theaters, everyone was cheering. So much fun!
So glad y'all loved this! I saw it in theaters when I was 12 and had a crush on both Rick and Ardeth Bey 😂. It's definitely worth checking out The Mummy Returns for more of both, plus the same flavor of adventure and comedy with light spooks! Evie gets even more to do in the sequel, and I love when films keep romances just as spicy and fun when (spoilers) the characters have been married for years.
Brenden is a Canadian/American. He is quite good in this one and its sequel you should also catch him in "Bedazzled" where he makes a series of wishes with the devil, Elizabeth Hurley. He does an excellent job. I am surprised you haven't seen this one. Good reaction.
Absolutely loved this movie, it got me into ancient egypt and hostory. Its amazing all the things a little kid can remember about an ancient civilization.
Oh man! The second I saw the title I knew I was going to enjoy this one, this time with Cassie and Carly. You know they were going to love this one with everything from the story, actors, and humor. I really hope they choose to watch the sequel!
This is honestly one of my favourite love stories of all time. I’m so glad you watched it. The second one is great, too. Shows more of Rick and Evie’s love story.
It's crazy that the riverboat scene is a sound stage and the "night" scene when they're on the camels and the Medjai are watching him is actually broad daylight, just darkened in post.
I'm so glad you guys watched this! I haven't even seen the full reaction yet 😄 I just couldn't resist typing that now. This is one of my favorite films. The cast is amazing, the story is classic, and the music WOW the music speaks to my soul ❤
"He wasn't evil before?" He may have been a rule-breaker before by messing around with the Pharaoh's wife, but being buried for a few thousand years after being hit with an immortality curse can make a guy a little cranky

I get why people say the movies go downhill from here, and objectively the first one is definitely the best...but The Mummy Returns is very much a guilty pleasure for me. Campy but fun.
Aw glad you like this one ladies. It's a great film and funny as well. Please watch the second one, The Mummy Returns, as it's as good as the first in my opinion and I think you'll both love it. More of the love story for you two to enjoy 🙂. Brilliant reaction as always. Keep up the good work !!! Simon (from Wales).
This was an awesome part of my childhood along with the other 90s kids and I'm glad you watched this. My work manager loves this movie so much she made a name tag for me with this quote at the bottom, "I have all the horses!"
This movie in 99 was a mega hit, like the terminator, Indiana Jones in the 80's. First movie I ever Saw Rachel Weiss, and felt in love. She's so lovely.
Hey y'all, Great reaction!! Be sure to watch the second one, it has a great twist to the over plot to the story. Trust me it was just as good as this..in my humble opinion. Love y'all mean it❤❤❤😎👻🎃
This is actually a remake of the old Universal Mummy with Boris Karloff. Much of the basic plot and characters come from that movie and is further expanded here.
If you think about it, Imhotep wasn't a villain. He was in love with a woman whom the pharaoh forced to be his mistress for his own pleasure, and she loved Imhotep. The two of them wanted to be together, but the pharaoh, in all of his entitled attitude, was butthurt, so before Imhotep could revive her so they could be together, they caught him and sentenced him to the worst death imaginable for love. If I was brought back, I'd be pissed too. In his eyes, these guys are no better than the pharaoh and his body guards whom stopped him from his love the first time, but now he's got an upperhand.
Comeback king Brendan Fraser was the cool swashbuckling adventurer most of us grew up with, his chemistry with Rachel Weisz is off the charts and this is a perfect companion piece to Indiana Jones. Do watch the sequel The Mummy Returns as it's even better and has more Rick and Evie again. Other Brendan movies to check out are Blast from the Past with Alicia Silverstone (you both will LOVE that one), School Ties, With Honors, Gods and Monsters, Bedazzled and of course The Whale which he just won his Oscar for. It's an emotional watch so have tissues prepared for that one. Watched him a lot growing up and I'm very happy to see his well deserved resurgence.
If you like Brendan Fraiser in this, you should both watch Blast from the Past. I know people have mislead you in the past about what was or was not a romantic comedy, but that one isn't stretching the definition at all. It's shocking they managed to create a functional plot in a movie filled with basically good people (with no exceptions outside of extremely minor characters).
The Mummy Returns is actually great. It is a bit cheesier, but all of the cast returns, the story is greatly expanded upon, and it is great fun. You should DEFINITELY watch it! Don’t bother with the last one.

Growing up I watched George of the Jungle and Dudley Doright quite a lot. As I got to my teens I watched the Mummy movies more. After I hit my 20s I realized how much I enjoyed Brendan Frasier, so I went back and found more of his movies. Blast from the Past is definitely worth a watch.
and anak su namun is marta on arrested development
Four Weddings is so underrated now, it's one of the finest rom coms ever made. I'm sure the girls here would LOVE it. I hope they watch it eventually.
@@kingleech16there is no modern version of it.
The Mummy Returns is a solid sequel to this movie. There are some CGI issues they didn't quite nail, but definitely worth a watch! Great react video!
As are The Scorpion King and the third Mummy movie, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
@@passionsquietrage I... I wouldn't go so far... watchable maybe. But Second Mummy is great.
@@martind5653 Why is that? And it has something besides the recasting and the writing/acting.
Perfect mixing between adventure, horror, action and comedy. ❤
And let’s not forget, looovve!
One of those movies that have the perfect balance of comedy, adventure, romance, and horror.
"That happens a lot around here."
My favorite, funniest line in the movie! (I enjoy meta-humor)
I really enjoy this movie and I'm glad you liked it too.
I think Mummy 2 may have even been slightly better. 3...not so much.
Rachel Weisz stars in the horror film CONSTANTINE (2005) opposite Keanu Reeves. CASSIE needs to watch this movie for scary October.
Te effects WERE good! And then Mummy 2 happened.
Between the "Mummy" movies, and "Geoge of the Jungle", I became a huge Brendan Frasier fan
Awesome choice, ladies! The sequel is pretty good as well.
Indeed! progressed the characters but kept the charm. Shame they made anymore after that.
next one is a family movie
Both sequels actually. The third one as almost as good, even if the setting is significantl different
An amazing cinematography, funny, scary, Jerry Goldsmith's score, Rachel Weisz, a very impressive CGI for the time... Hollywood struggles to make movies like this one nowadays.
Hollywood doesn't even try to make movies like this anymore. They only want to preach the gospel of progressivism!
today they could only do endless remakes and spin offs- actually The Mummy is a remake as well but back in the days they actually had the ability to make good remakes
@@rgerber this version was the best imo.
It felt like a throwback even in 1999. Even with all the cgi.
progressivism isn't the problem it's how they do it that's the problem.
@@ronweber1402 I can't understand how a person can think The Mummy 2 was more entertaining than Romancing the Stone, but you do you I guess,
@@Rystefn No joke. The Mummy 2 got in my brain, and there are still bits of it rattling around in there. Fortunately my sisters saved me from the Horror that is The Mummy 3.
I'm so glad you guys finally watched The Mummy. This is probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Glad you both enjoyed it!
I enjoyed it too big dog, can’t I get a shout out danggg
This is a perfect movie, period. It has everything and the best cast. Legendary.
This movie has aged like fine wine. The effects are so good and still hold up. Please watch The Mummy Returns. I think you will both love it.
The Mummy Returns is actually quite good. The third one, not so much. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Then the third well as you said not so much
@@coltonpiper6156 the entire cast killed it. From the top down. It's about as close to the perfect movie as you can get
@@ashketchumsdadthe second one is even better in some ways I like to view these in tandem as one full story not separate
Well, the four (yes, four) sequels to The Scorpion King are.. well, still pretty bad too.
@@mblackwl you mean the the scorpion king sequel featuring young Mathias and the budget wwe sequels with ron perlman
The first "Scorpion King" is decent enough to be reacted to, but not anything that follow it.
@@SisyphusOfSodom naw after the prequel WWE got a hold of the IP and made some really dates budget films that you would expect from like 1979-89.
@@xyreniaofcthrayn1195 The one with The Rock is decent enough to react to.
Because the Lebel 1886 features a magazine cutoff that allows soldiers to hold rounds "in reserve."
Also, in regards to Rick's hanging.... yes. Brendan Fraser legit did the stunt. But something went wrong, and he was nearly killed but managed to be given CPR in time and made a full recovery.
ALSO also, when Carly said that (9:20 - 9:24), I found it pretty ironic, when you find out:
Glad to see you’re watching the 1999 cinematic masterpiece, The Mummy, starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz
I knew this had to be somewhere in the comments
One of my favorite movie of all times. The chemistry between Brendan and Rachel is so good.

I feel for that librarian. I worked at a library when an earthquake hit. Shelves collapsed. Everything was on the floor. It took us six months to get the shelves safely secured and all the books repaired and back in place.
Eish
Trivia: They had to do that bookshelves collapse in one take.
This movie was my childhood, I watched it every day since i was 3 yrs old. I love it
That was fun.
Blast From the Past for me
Blast from the Past was a really sweet movie. Alicia Silverstone was pretty big too back then. Still not sure where she went...?
Don’t forget a very young Nathan Fillion, before Castle, The Rookie and Firefly
Bedazzled?
I LOVE this movie! When I first saw it (aired on a cable TV movie channel in the early 2000s), I made the mistake of watching it in a dark living room in the company of a very affectionate kitten. Without fail, at the tensest parts of the movie, something would rub up against me and I'd almost jump through the ceiling!
But at least you were safe from the undead!
Such a great score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith.
Also, regarding the debate of camels VS horses:
Horses are faster, but camels have higher levels of stamina and are adapted for life in the desert.
Goldsmith was a true music master.
It's crazy how little the score for this movie is talked about, it's amazing.
While Carly hides, Cassie doesnt even turn away for some scary scenes any more. She has seen The Thing. The Mummy is nothing. 🙂
She was stone cold in some of the darkest scenes in Zodiac. Was pretty impressed. But she's seen so many different kinds of movies back to back to back...not totally surprised. A pro now.
I love the "Didn't someone say my kids could watch this?"...I saw this and the sequel around the age of 7! Love the first and second!
Brilliant move, one of my favorites. It's a modern classic of action-adventure. Rachel and Brendan were absolutely beautiful. Loved your reaction!
Mummy #2 is good. Def one of the better sequels in any series. It fills in a lot of the back story of how the Mummy got cursed, etc. Highly recommend for another Popcorn Movie.
seeing this in the theater made for a fun experience; didn’t see them all theatrically, but 1999 had a lot of movies I still like watching today: Matrix, Fight Club, American Beauty, Three Kings, Being John Malkovich, Green Mile, the list goes on…
I wish more reactors would do American Beauty...

@johnny9000. The 13th Warrior is an excellent retelling of Grendel.
This is an epic one. I think the ladies would still love the Mummy 2. They have to watch #2 at least
The Mummy Returns rules too. Its much more wacky and they double down on the action and CGI. It has a warm place in my heart.
John Hannah (who played Jonathan) is in “4 Weddings and a Funeral” and “Sliding Doors”.
I think The Mummy Returns is pretty good and worth watching. Also if you want a Romantic comedy with Brendan Fraser, I think you will enjoy A Blast from the Past.
Def A Blast From The Past! Would be very enjoyable for these two. 60’s innocence coupled with a 90’s coming of age.
Absolutely, what an adorable movie!
Blast from the past is excel l ent
This was such an amazing adventure when it came out in 99. This is hands down one of my favorite adventure movies. I can quote this thing front to back. And honestly, The Mummy Returns is a ton of fun, too. There are so many call backs to the first movie in the second one, and Evey and Rock have so much chemistry in that one too. I highly recommend that one as well.
It almost felt out of place in 1999. Like it wasn't really the type of movie they made that often in those years.
This movie is a damn classic and Brendan Fraser is tremendous 🤘🏽

The Mummy is just good, solid, fun Action/Adventure. It has that 90's magic that i really miss in movies these days.
You gotta check Mummy returns, the chemistry between Frasier & Weisz is even stronger in the 2nd movie
It's crazy that the riverboat scene is a sound stage and the "night" scene when they're on the camels and the Medjai are watching him is actually broad daylight, just darkened in post.

Totally agree! I put them both on my list of favorites!
Definitely think they'd enjoy Blast From the Past. Gods and Monsters...maybe not so much.
Imhotep was a real guy. He was an architect. Several people died after opening his tomb
You know the original Mummy was released in 1932 and starred Boris Karloff. Also, the Mummy is a love story as is Dracula.
