You'd be at the servo (Aussie slang for gas station) and they'd jokingly ask if you wanted a Cornetto. It was everywhere. Most people who saw and loved this movie didn't even know it was a parody of dawn of the dead or that dawn of the dead existed at all. Zombies were not a common theme and for many millennials this was their first zombie film. And we loved it. Sparking famous game franchises like left 4 dead which is 4 people with melee weapons fighting off hordes with comedic elements. Very clearly inspired by this film. When you compare that game to resident evil which was incredibly niche you can see how much of an effect this movie had on the genre as a whole. We wouldn't have films like Warm Bodies without Shaun of the Dead.
Can't wait for the rest of the Cornetto Trilogy! Hot Fuzz is next and it's one of my all time favorite movies. So many hidden jokes and nuances that you only pick up on repeated viewings. Pacing is amazing, and those intense Edgar Wright-style cuts literally catapult you from scene to scene.
George A. Romero, the godfather of the zombie film genre, loved this homage to his movies so much that he gave Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos as zombies in his film Land of the Dead.
@OfficialMediaKnights you guys have to react to The Worlds End too as thats the last one in whats called the cornetto trilogy. Have you guys watched the movie Paul ? It has these two in it as the main charachters too amongst at lot of famous american actors. All the films are absolutely hilarious.
@@OfficialMediaKnights Hot Fuzz is my absolute favourite, but The World's End is underrated. It's a bit more mature theme wise, and I didn't like it as much the first time, but after rewatches it actually feels the most vulnerable and sincere.
Fun Fact: All the extras in Shaun of the Dead were fans of a television programme called Spaced, in which Simon Pegg starred. Simon Pegg posted on the Spaced fan site, requesting extras for the film.
the film was also inspired by an episode of Spaced where Simon's character had been playing a lot of Resident Evil 2 and he ends up dreaming he's caught up in a zombie apocalypse
The actor Jessica Haynes whom Sean keeps meeting, co-starred and co-wrote Spaced. Spaced is IMO, one of the best limited comedy series ever made. Cult status legend
The main cast zombies all retain a little of themselves. Pete joins them at the pub like he use to. Phillip couldn't stand the loud music. Ed played videogames with Shaun. Barbara was completely docile until David yelled at Shaun
Which is actually a plot point because in the aftermath on the zombie outbreak we are shown that they actually retain some of their cognitive functions and even can do some jobs.
One aspect of this I like is how much more the characters have to improvise to take out zombies because Britain isn't drowning in guns like America is. And it leads to some of the best scenes, like the "what records do we sacrifice or save" bit.
@@jnt6239 "We cannot burn Friedrich Nietzsche! He's the most important thinker of the nineteenth century!" "Oh please, Nietzsche was a chauvinist pig who was in love with his sister!" "He was not a chauvinist pig!" "But he was in love with his sister!"
fun fact: Ed spells out everything that happens in the movie, at the bar scene in 12:40. which is a recurring theme for Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy.
The bartender in the Winchester is actually a retired stuntman, and he told them to hit him as hard as they could. If you look at his shirt closely, you can see that it's patted out. He put on extra layers and told them to just go for it to make the scene look realistic. Now that is professionalism right there
One of my favorite details in the writing is, when Ed and Shaun are at the winchester early on, Ed spoils the rest of the movie: Bloody Mary in the morning. Bite at the King's (Phillip's) head. Couple (Dave and Di) at the Little Princess (Liz). Stumble (zombie walk) back [to the Winchester] for "shots."
The film is littered with tiny, but amazing, character details. When he's doing his second visit to the shop after deciding to sort out his life he goes to pick up a Coke, thinks, and then gets a Diet Coke. Just a fun little moment of Shaun making a resolution to be healthier
It just occured to me that in the first act you see that Shaun can't let go Ed and that's part of the reason that he doesn't progress in his life. The moment Ed dies is the moment the problem is resolved and Shaun finally lets him go. Then Shaun gets back with his girlfriend and seems to have that progression he needed. Although he keeps Ed in the garden, it's like he keeps a glimpse of his past younger self who was less responsible as a reminder of those cherished days.
What a wonderful analysis! It’s so true that Ed seemed to be that anchor holding Shaun back but the true growth shows when Shaun is able to manage both showing up for others but also showing up for himself!
There is just so much texture and small detail when it comes to this movie. one of my favorite little things is the movie answers for sure that it's Shaun who was leaving the door open because he was the one who went to the shops. Also Pete showing up at the pub because Shaun told them exactly where they'd be. Another fun touch is according to the DVD extras Diane survives by making her way up a tree and surviving on David's leg til things blow over. Can't imagine the amount of therapy she needs after that one xD
this film is so truly iconic & a part of British culture - one of our teachers at secondary school (high school) looked *exactly* like the barman, and it became a tradition at school discos to ask for this song & pretend to beat him with imaginary pool cues, he loved it 😂 Mr. Settle you were a legend 🤘
I love the way that they keep alluding to the fact that zombies retain their personalities through Pete getting angry about the car, the kid with the football, and Phillip with the music.
You both nailed it at 11:54 about how Shawn needs to be 'more of an active participant' in life. and at 17:13 with how he's 'essentially just another zombie.' Shawn was a zombie BEFORE the outbreak. It took the people turning into zombies to turn him human. Even once the outbreak happens, he doesn't notice (as shown in the repeated tracking shot.) Note how we see him just lumbering through life, not present, brainless, and with the 'red' on his shirt. After the outbreak, he is awake, affirming his relationships, taking charge, and his whole demeanor has changed. Subtle point that is often missed in the overwhelming comedic brilliance of it all. Brilliant.

Simon Pegg was part of a small group of comedic actors, including Mark Heap, Kevin Eldon and Julia Davis in a fantastic sketch series called Big Train from the writers of Father Ted back in the late 90's. You know, I really wish I could speak any English, so I could understand what you're saying.
I missed a LOT of media from 2000-2012. The video that got me "into media" was Every Frame a Painting about Edgar Wright "How to do visual comedy" I think was the title. This kickstarted my fall down the rabbit hole of watching media ABOUT the media and I appreciate so much more about movies and shows now than I ever did growing up. I saw that video and immediately knew I was missing so much by only following mainstream releases and shows. Ran out to find this movie and absolutely loved it!
Thats us Brits full scale zombie attack & we be in the pub 😂😂😂 Hilarious charming reaction your pair are such warm likeable reactors & a joy to watch. Hot Fuzz is awesome & a love letter to 80s/90s action films.
Loved to see this nobody will ever do such good reactions like you do guys!! I know that you hate sad movies but Jack and the couckoo clock heart. ( I hope i wrote that right) is the most beautiful and sad movie I have ever seen.
Shaun: “Well, it's not really safe, is it?” Ed: “Yeah, look at the state of it.” That’s my favorite exchange! Can’t really put my finger on it, just the simplicity of it. 😂
Edgar Wright is one of my favorite directors. I love his humor, his soundtracks, and the way his films are shot. He's got a signature style, like James Gunn. Also, if you guys still feel like going on a zombie kick, 'Warm Bodies' has more dark humor and George A. Romero's 'Dead' films are always worth a watch.
Yes! I was hoping you guys would react to this! I've watched this countless times and it never gets old. Truly one of the best horror comedy movies. Oh! If you haven't seen it yet, Tucker and Dale VS Evil is another hilarious horror comedy.
I was in college when this one came out, and they had a screening on campus. Great first way to watch it! Movie still holds up after 20 years (!!). Soundtrack’s a banger too.
Ari and Denise, I've seen a ton of SOTD reactions and yours is the best. You make the important observations, you picked up its subtle beauties like when Philip turns down the radio in the car… you even pointed out something I hadn't noticed before and I was one of the early fans of SOTD. Thank you for this beautiful reaction!
"We are coming to get you Barbara!" the movie is chuck full of references to old zombie movies, even in the sounds and music bits. Now you have to complete the cornetto trilogy :D
Such a fantastic channel as always . This request is more related to your last video (nobody) there is a 2022 film called Sisu that I haven’t really seen reacted to much . Wich is sad because of how good and fun it is imo. It was my favorite of 2022. It’s in the same kinda category of John wick ,the equallizer and nobody. If you could react to it at some POENT that would be awesome. I really think you two would have fun with it .
Wow thank you so so much for your generosity but also for being so supportive and kind - it truly means the world to us!! We have SISU on our list and we’re gonna try to get to it as soon as we can! Again, thank you so so much, you are the best!💕
You'll notice some regular players, like Rafe Spall. He's the rude guy on his phone in the sales meeting. You may know an older him as the guy flirting with the alien snake in 'Prometheus'.

@@jerryfick613 I wasn't allowed to watch zombies or anything gory as a kid. It wasn't until my brother waited for my parents not to be home to have me watch the movie I remembered how scared I was seeing zombies. Now, I love zombie movies and games. Also, yes, I have, which is why I love this movie so much more because of the references to other zombie movies
And thanks to this film, I can't listen to Queen songs the same way ever again. Every time I hear "Don't Stop Me", all I can see and think of is them all beating Big John with the pool cues.😂
the script and direction is so tight. it's really a brilliant piece of work. masterclass in story telling. the next two are equally good. y'all will enjoy the next two.
the stuntman playing John his first stunt was a jukebox smash and this was his last stunt before retiring talk about full circle in a movie that repeats its self and only makes the whole experience better.
FINALLY! Wright, Pegg and Frost at the peak of their game. I highly recommend moving on to Hot Fuzz after this, which is, in my opinion, somehow even better.
I was 99.9% sure you guys would get this film and love it, but still so glad and relieved that you did! One of my favourite British films. If you ever watch it again for yourselves, I think movie buffs like you two will enjoy catching all the references to other great films within the script (just one example: Reservoir Dogs when David wants them to shoot Barbara) - bet there are guides that list them all online somewhere. Embedded pop culture refs are an Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg trademark. 👍
This movie is a masterpiece. And it’s so surprising to see considering it was all made on a hope, a dream, and a prayer. All of the dialogue in the movie is repeated later on with more significance. Same with the shots and cuts. You’ll notice not only is the shot the same from beginning to first Z day. But so are all of the people he encounters. This movie definitely rewards multiple viewings. Even things like Ed’s plan for how the night should go is exactly how the night went. Lots of double speak and hidden meanings. Easily one of the best movies of all time.
Hey you guys are watching this,i remember when you watched scream 4 and you said you were thinking about watching this and that day has arrived. Love you guys and your videos
51:47 There’s a companion comic book made about the movie in which we follow Dianne after she exited the Winchester, she beat up a bunch of zombies with David’s leg and climbed a tree, there she lost consciousness and by the time she woke up everything was over.
One of the best lines in the wholly bloody thing is Ed screaming into the phone Shaun's holding, "We're coming to get you, Barbara!!" Direct call back to Night of the Living Dead, the OG zombie flick.
And it’s the 17yo kid who works with Shaun. Early on Ed takes call and says he’s only got Henry (an 8th) for himself and when the kid takes the call at work he says to his mate “he said he’s only got Henry, none to sell”. I particularly love the touch that even in the midst of all this the dealers and users are still operating as usual to the best of their abilities. “Bit mental innit?”

Simon Pegg was part of a small group of comedic actors, including Mark Heap, Kevin Eldon and Julia Davis in a fantastic sketch series called Big Train from the writers of Father Ted back in the late 90's. It was one of the first things he did, before he did Spaced even, and it is SO funny. I know you two would find it hilarious, it's 100% your sense of humour. Definitely check it out if you get the chance.❤
You know, I really wish I could speak any English, so I could understand what you're saying.
48:52 "Don't point the g** at my mom" is the warehouse stand off scene from Reservoir Dogs.
That was a great efap. Not surprised it got you into the whole genre.
"You got red on you" will work its way into your everyday vocab.😂
I love edger Wrights editing style it's so crisp and creative, just a joy to watch.
You HAVE to watch Hot Fuzz now. Absolutely incredible
Oh we definitely are, cannot wait for that one!
Thats us Brits full scale zombie attack & we be in the pub 😂😂😂
Hilarious charming reaction your pair are such warm likeable reactors & a joy to watch.
Hot Fuzz is awesome & a love letter to 80s/90s action films.
Loved to see this
nobody will ever do such good reactions like you do guys!!
I know that you hate sad movies but Jack and the couckoo clock heart. ( I hope i wrote that right) is the most beautiful and sad movie I have ever seen.
Thank you for reacting to this, Next should be Hot Fuzz and The Worlds End, to complete the Cornetto Trilogy. Thank you so much.
And maybe PAUL too? 😁
@@damiettamataram3492Paul is so funny
@@desireemclaughlin1455 It is! Paul is my favorite alien 😁
If y'all want another freaking fantastic horror comedy, I highly HIGHLY suggest Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
48:30 "Loosing both of your parents on the same day"
"It wasn't his dad"
Literally busted out laughing 😂🤣😂
I can't wait until you guys watch Hot Fuzz, it is in my completely biased opinion, the perfect movie. The foreshadowing is * Chefs Kiss *
Shaun: “Well, it's not really safe, is it?”
Ed: “Yeah, look at the state of it.”
That’s my favorite exchange! Can’t really put my finger on it, just the simplicity of it. 😂
Their delivery is just fantastic throughout. Comedic perfection 😂
This is always my go-to movie for zombies and comedy. Simon Pegg actually made a cameo in George Romeros land of the dead as a zombie.
Edgar Wright too
Yes! I was hoping you guys would react to this! I've watched this countless times and it never gets old. Truly one of the best horror comedy movies.
Oh! If you haven't seen it yet, Tucker and Dale VS Evil is another hilarious horror comedy.
Why are you guys reacting to all my favourite movies😢 this is amazing . Thank you, love from the uk
Sending all the love to the Uk! ❤️ Happy to hear you’ve been enjoying the selection 😁
This is the perfect blend between satire and love letter to the greats
I was in college when this one came out, and they had a screening on campus. Great first way to watch it! Movie still holds up after 20 years (!!). Soundtrack’s a banger too.
Omg that sounds like a blast!! This movie is just to fun and so well shot, we can’t wait to check out the rest of the Cornetto trilogy!
After watching this we are both beyond excited for the next ones 😁
@@OfficialMediaKnights awesome!
@@OfficialMediaKnights❤🤙🏻❤🤙🏻❤
This is the first chapter of Cornetto Trilogy. I highly recommend you to watch Hot Fuzz and The World's End.
That’s the plan! We want to check out the rest of the trilogy! 😁
You'll notice some regular players, like Rafe Spall. He's the rude guy on his phone in the sales meeting. You may know an older him as the guy flirting with the alien snake in 'Prometheus'.
@@tomscott113 Yes but he will look different in Hot Fuzz because he lost weight. If they don't spot him, I can understand. He is one of the police officers called Andrew.
What a great choice. Easily in my top 5 movies of all time. With the visual and written call backs, so much to discover upon re watches. Thank u two. Stay awesome
Yes, I was hoping you guys would watch this movie. This is the first zombie movie I have ever watched, and as always, it makes my day to see notifications on TH-cam and Patreon with films I grew up watching. It makes me so excited to see your reaction to
And Thanks, Guys, you're the best, and my favorite TH-cam channel
Really your first one? Oof. Sets a high bar😋
Thank you so much for your kindness and support, your comment really brightened our day!! You’re the best 💕
This was your first Zombie film ever? Do you catch the references in reverse when you watch other zombie films?
@@jerryfick613 I wasn't allowed to watch zombies or anything gory as a kid. It wasn't until my brother waited for my parents not to be home to have me watch the movie I remembered how scared I was seeing zombies. Now, I love zombie movies and games. Also, yes, I have, which is why I love this movie so much more because of the references to other zombie movies
@@exoterric yes it did even after all of the zombie movies I've watched this is in my top 3 zombie movies
Denise's "It wasn't his dad" got me good, well played lool.
Denise always so funny you have found the perfect woman my man Ari
Oh wow! Just now getting to this one huh? 😂😂 this was a blast and its such a classic
Ahahah it took us a bit but we’re finally here!!
And thanks to this film, I can't listen to Queen songs the same way ever again. Every time I hear "Don't Stop Me", all I can see and think of is them all beating Big John with the pool cues.😂
Yes! I'm all here for it.
Whenever you feel like another one, go for hot fuzz!
Better yet, go for the whole cornetto trilogy.
Omg we had so much fun with this, we are definitely gonna continue the Cornetto trilogy!! Hope you enjoy!!
the script and direction is so tight. it's really a brilliant piece of work. masterclass in story telling. the next two are equally good. y'all will enjoy the next two.
"We're coming to get you, Barbara!" is a line from Night Of The Living Dead and something I say all the time. But I got it from this movie. Lol
I say that all the time too, my late grandmother was named Barbara lol.
the stuntman playing John his first stunt was a jukebox smash and this was his last stunt before retiring talk about full circle in a movie that repeats its self and only makes the whole experience better.
FINALLY! Wright, Pegg and Frost at the peak of their game.
I highly recommend moving on to Hot Fuzz after this, which is, in my opinion, somehow even better.
Thanks
Thank you so much for your kindness and generosity, we appreciate you so much!💕
You've got red on you.
Dylan Moran (David) and Simon Pegg were in a really sweet movie together called Run, Fatboy, Run. It's super touching and wholesome.
Well i was about to go to bed, then i saw this.
Haha awe hopefully you still were able to get some rest!!
This was great! Can't wait for Hot Fuzz, it's my favorite of the 3.
Yay one of my favorite movies also a normal day in the UK
😅🤣😅
Lollll
Them as a duo, their style is visible in all their movies together. Great series of stories told.
You two should watch Paul it's really funny movie same actors that played this one is in it
Adding it to the list! Thank you so much for the suggestion ❤️
@@OfficialMediaKnights My vote to Paul, too! 🙌
My personal favorite of the Cornetto Trilogy. Editing, needle drops, camera work, script: all hilarious.
Yes yes and yesss, everything you mentioned was just masterful!!

Once again, you two go so much further in depth analyzing what others would call "...a silly zombie movie." Great reaction!
Shaun, Ed, and Yvonne (Simon, Nick, and Jessica) are in a show by Edgar Wright called “Spaced” that precedes these movies. Highly recommend.
OMG I’m so happy you’ve chosen this film! This is one of my favourite films and being British it’s classic British humour at its finest!
Hot fuzz next please it's the best Edgar wright Simon Pegg and Nick frost work
This movie is a masterpiece.
Haha yesss we finally got around to it!! Thanks so much for the support!
51:47 There’s a companion comic book made about the movie in which we follow Dianne after she exited the Winchester, she beat up a bunch of zombies with David’s leg and climbed a tree, there she lost consciousness and by the time she woke up everything was over.
I love you both. Definitely in my top 5 reactors.
We are beyond grateful for all the love you guys give us. Thank you for making our day ❤️
One of the best lines in the wholly bloody thing is Ed screaming into the phone Shaun's holding, "We're coming to get you, Barbara!!" Direct call back to Night of the Living Dead, the OG zombie flick.
when Ed picks up the phone, it's a weed-call - and he's so casual about it "sorry, got nothing"
“Bit mental innit?”
good catch!
@@zegh8578 I’d love to take the credit but I only found this out from a similar comment a few years ago.
