My "Affordable" Dream Build

- A couple of months ago Trek replaced my Madone and gave me a brand new frameset. Some of you in the comments guessed this correctly, I got a Trek Emonda SLR!
With a new frame comes a brand new build. I had to be a bit selective here since I didn't want to break the bank. In the end I opted to pick some new components, but also retain some of my old ones. Watch this video to see what I ended up buying, my rationale and also what I kept from the old bike.
Big shoutout to the guys at CCACHE (ccache.cc/ ) for building up this bike. If you are in the CBD go check out their new store on 32 Carrington Street.

hmmm, in US, Trek released some of its unused warrantly replacement Project 1 framesets to the market and only cost us $1499 + no tax.
Thanks for sharing the build of your beautiful bike!
Thank you for watching and commenting! ☺️
Great build, congratulations on a wonderful bike!!! I like the very practical balance between new components and carry-overs from the previous bike! A very relatable and sensible way to look at a new bike/upgrade.
Thank you!
I’ve ridden the bike for a few days now and I’m loving it. Review video to come soon :)
Awesome build. Love the little touches like the cages and the direct mount hanger, i think that's what elevates a good off the shelf build into a great custom build.
Thank broda
Got some inspiration from yourself ;)
Nice bike! 🤩
great build video Josh!..keep up the good work💪
Thank you brother! Thanks for watching
Nice one mate!!👌
Bellissimo! Great video and nice rig! See you on the road.
Thank you Barry! See you on the road :)
Awesome video mate! Great to see the process in such detail and executed by a pro 👏
Thank you Felix! ☺️
My god the employees there are good looking
Yes agreed.
Slam dat stem! Nice build, Josh. As soon as I saw Ccache at the very beginning of the video, I knew I had to watch this video as I follow them on Instagram and like their posts.
Stem is getting slammed right now ;)
Thanks for watching the video!
Congrats mate, time for new PBs on all of the hills 🤠
Thank you friend 😘
Beautiful - will be the bike to last the ages. Grats!
Thankyou
It’s the black on chrome decal for me ❤❤
Reminds you of something else? ;)
Wow, that's an incredibly well merchandised store. Never seen one like it, really love the concept of inventory at your finger tips. Hopefully they don't deal with a sticky finger situation too often.
It’s a really cool store, there’s on in Melbourne too! If you’re around check it out
@@joshkwan A hair under 13,000 kilometers away and I can't bike the journey. Sadly.
ccache stock mostly premium stuff so super expensive.
@@DanTuber thats true, but I think you'd be surprised that they beat the price of most other places on their regualr components too.
Open a store like that in California and it'll be cleaned out within a week. Try and stop the shoplifters and the authorities will come after the store instead.
Have the same color in SL on 11 speed DA. Came from a noah fast rb. Absolutely love this bike. Even though its 16.5lbs it still climbs better than my 15.7lb Ridley.
Great stuff, glad you love the bike.
Nice....!😊
Get in there, Josh, with the all acces pass 😉😉😉
Thanks matey :)))
nice video 👍
Thank you 👍
Congratz on the new Bike Mate.. 🎉🎉 Whats your feedback on the Galfer rotors.. planning on getting those too..
Hey mate, they run fantastic. Equal to or slightly better than the shimano ones I’ve used. Personally I chose them because they look sick.
Good on you to write affordable in between brackets
What bottle cages are those?
My 'affordable ' dream bike was built from ebay, 6.4kg , full carbon cervelo, campag centaur, dura ace c24 wheels, all high end finishing parts, cost me £700 all in...now that's affordable!! Just a bit of patience buying good second hand stuff at the right moment
But noone dreams of it…
@@mael5405 🤣🤣
You haven't seen it!
That’s fantastic, thanks for sharing. Dream build doesn’t necessarily have to be super expensive, just achieve the goal you set out at the start.
Sweet build!
Should the drops be wrapped away from the rider ie clockwise for right drop?
Had to cut the steerer so ended up doing the bar tape again then.
Hi Josh, just wondering how long did it take for delivery of the frame from trek. I’ve just ordered my new Emonda frame set (Nov 2, 2023)…hoping it be here for Xmas. Did you consider EXS Aer(o)ver integrated bars that CCache sell? Looks like a nice match for the Emonda’s type of cable integration.
Hey mate, when I choose the frame it was based around what was available sooner rather than later so I got it within a month. I did consider the EXS which look really good, but at the time they were out of stock and they don’t get them in too often.
In the end I’m actually very happpy with the old Madone handlebars on the Emonda which has just a clean of a look I reckon.
Nice build! May I ask what spacers you used for the Madone-stem? I have a Emonda SL and want to upgrade the bar/stem as well but the Emonda spacers aren't flat like yours.. Thanks!
Hey mate, I’m using the Madone handlebars (previous Gen). Trek have made specific spacers for these handlebars to interface with the bike. Your local trek dealer should have these handy.
If you want to use other bar/stem combos from other brands they’ll need to have their own spacers.
yes I wanna use the same handlebars like you. Do you mean the painted part at the top of the headset? the original Emonda part isnt flat, the one from the Madone is..🤔
Yes, you’ll need Madone spaces
And the Madone cap which goes ontop of the top tube.
Sorry if it’s a bit confusing, hopefully you have a local trek shop who can help you
Lucky boy
Very ^_^
Awesome build! I really like the more traditional (?) shape of the Émonda.
And hold up, how did I miss the new store in CBD!? Is it across the street from Rapha?
Thank you!
Likewise, I was a bit over all the new stuff they were trying out on the Madone and just wanted to go with something tried, true and traditional.
It’s close to the Rapha store, just behind it actually.
@@joshkwan very much agree! And what’s the frame size you have (I might have missed it in the video)?
Oh great! Gonna go visit the store hahah looks amazing
Size 50 frame @@hippo71124
I'm glad you put "affordable in quotes! That's a beautiful build! Where do you find the space to store all your babies?
p.s. do I win a prize for guessing?
Haha, I’m not fully lost on the irony of how expensive cycling is as a hobby.
My roadie lives in the apartment but the rest are locked up securely in the garage.
Perhaps next build I’ll have a giveaway for guessing🤭 but kudos to you for figuring it out
Great video mate, what size would you recommend for either madone or emonda im 165cm btw :)
I’d recommend looking at the sizing chart since it is not just height but also inseam. For 165cm you’re probably size 48 or 50
Yeap ! the madone handlebar with the emonda looks really good, you need the madone bearing cap spacer buy other than that it looks sick
Road bikes need a UDH come one start the movement
Gorgeous Built and good components. Mind share the affordable means how much in total?
I spent less than $3000AUD.
Considering a Emonda SLR7 costs $12800 it’s not bad 😛
@@joshkwan that's really good. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your ride.
Awesome build mate. Truly is bike porn watching this haha
Thanks very much! In the past I’ve filmed bike builds for other people but this one felt special because it was for me :P
What was the problem with your Madone that required a warranty claim?
As you know the previous generation of Madone had the ISO speed. This was a piece of carbon in the top tube which allowed independent movement of the seatpost. Over the course of time the mechanism for this (bolt and screw) damaged the carbon.
how tall are u Josh with that size 50cm frame?
170vm
What was the frame size and bulld weight of that beauty?
Frame size 50, build weight to come soon :)
@@joshkwan Sweet mate!!
can you tell the difference with no rear isospeed?
Yea, there’s less compliance for sure. But also the transfer of power without it is much better.
You’re gonna like the TPU tubes if you have t used them before.
They’re awesome, but I’ve been told not to pump them up with CO2. Better carry a hand pump :P
Install can be tricky too. I’m curious how long they will last and how/if the repair kits work.
That Aliante saddle looks very tilted forward 😮
Still tweaking the fit of the bike, I usually ride with the saddle tilted forward since I spend a lot of time in aero position.
50cm frame. How tall are you if you don’t mind?
170cm :)
FULL PRICE PLS ?
How tall are you Josh? Was that a 50 frame?
Im 170cm tall, and yes size 50 frame
Why not using deda alanera? It will be lighter
I’m waiting for the EXS Aerover to come back in stock :)
whats was the budget?
That’ll be in the review video coming soon!
nice trek emonda bro ,what is ur height?
170cm
Oic..may i know ur stem lenght now bro?
Current set up is 110mm. But going to go back to 90mm I think
Wow... really affordable? Your affordable range seems pretty high. Nice set up.
Emonda SLR7 is close to $13,000.
Using some old components and getting the frame as warranty meant that this build cost me a fraction. That being said I’m well aware that at this level, road cycling gear/parts is crazy expensive to the entry level
He’s only really paying for a new groupset and few odd bits, all of which equates to the cost of a brand new entry level carbon bike here in Aus. Most sensible upgrade I’ve seen, taking advantage of a warranty claim. Well done
Too many spacers! In combination with that sharp compression ring, this looks kind of dangerous (not knowing if the expander plug supports the steerer tube this deep from the inside).
Was running the spacers whole figuring out the bike fit. It’s slammed now ;)
My god the youtuber here is good looking.
thank u
@@joshkwan ditch your fiance we got pastries to eat
🥵🥵🥵
Sugoi
Affordable for a doctors salary maybe lol isnt the emonda SLR frameset like $4k alone?
Hahaha yes that’s true. I got the frame for free though 😛
Hence affordable for me
Ah yes. Black on black on sparkly black.
Black is the new black 🤣
Sell the frame and get a Tarmac 😝
Hahaha the speed sniffer? 🤣
Is you can afford that 8k bike you can afford a 15k bike
Difference between an 8k bike and a 15k bike though? 🤷♂️
@@joshkwan just save twice as long lol. Unless the 8k is stolen
$8k bike is not affordable at all :)...nice bike though.
Lcukily since the frame was free and I reused alot of old parts, I spent much much less than 8k@@jauxed
Trash, I mean sell the Bontrager wheels and get some Winspace or better wheels, then that bike will fly!
If the bike ain’t flying it’ll be the riders fault not the wheels haha
@@joshkwan trust me, the wheels will definitely help.
Future investments!
Nice man.......what size frame in cm is that?
Size 50. My previous bike was 52 but I decided to size down.
@@joshkwan I hear you.. im suggested a 56cm im 5 foot 9.. but i ride a 52.5cm saddle slammed back..100mm stem.. it works.. :)
If it works, it works :)@@timothyscott3116
