In the game pocket I’d store the hood and my cashmere scarf. Perfect for when the weather turns while you are out. One of the best reviews I’ve seen. Thanks keep doing them.
Excellent review. The Bedale is an equestrian jacket designed to be worn while riding. The snap flap at the bottom of the Bedale is designed so the coat tail will drape over the back of the saddle when riding. The gusseted sleeves are also designed with riding in mind as the gussets keep wind from blowing up the sleeve when riding at speed. The nylon "skirt" is on the Bedale so moisture will not wick up the cotton lining if riding in the rain. The Beaufort is designed to be an upland hunting jacket. The longer length allows for more protection from briars and the slightly lower hand warmer pockets allow for more comfortable cradling of a shotgun while walking. The game pouch is self explanatory. I find the game pouch ideal for storing a scarf or even a light sweater.
@@sc1 I have both and love them both. I find I wear the Beaufort more because it is easier to slip on and off since it doesn't have the sleeve gussets. I do think the Bedale looks better when I'm wearing it although I get compliments on both jackets.
I’m a little over 6 feet and about 215 pounds. I have a Beaufort jacket, size 46. It fits perfectly on the shoulders. I bought a zip in liner. Once that is in place, it fits perfectly. Beauforts are designed to be worn over a suit jacket or a bulky sweater. They require upkeep, but their water resistance is legendary. Look after it, and it will give you years of service.
Old sport, I'm about your size. I'm looking at the Beaufort with the zip in liner. What is the coldest temp you've worn your jacket in? Could/would you go colder with a chunky wool sweater? Best Regards,
@@charliefoxtrot7219 It’s cool in the mornings here. About 8 degrees. I make do without the liner. I also bought a Barbour Derby Tweed sweater. There’s room for either. If say the liner would go in at 5 degrees or lower. I’ll let you know when I have to put the liner in.
The Bedale is a horse riding jacket, the Beaufort is a hunting jacket. That is the reason for the Bedale being shorter. Your "correct" style also depends on where you live. Well done. A very nice post. I have a Beaufort in Sage and a Classic Bedale. I enjoy both of them. @@sc1 I have both jackets in the same size. Both jackets fit me well. I decided to take a slightly larger size. Nice review, I own the Bedale after ordering both and trying them on at home. I ended up buying a Bedale for wife and daughter. My son bought the Ashby, which is a a more fitted jacket which required him to go one size up. The two colors are navy and sage, the olive looked too brown. Thanks for doing the visual comparison!
I think the Bedale is the better choice. I wouldn’t buy the Ashby, because it might be too tight on me. And I prefer the extra room for layering, which the Bedale 36C provides for me. And I like the color out of the box. But we’ll see how the color ages over time…
Basically you need to try on if at all possible and consider when you may wear it and what else you will put on. My Bedale wears great with a country shirt but too small when wearing layered clothing. The Beaufort is for winter, late autumn and early spring with pullovers.
I’m from the UK and I have two Bedales , I would say these are a wear virtually anywhere and any season especially if you buy a Barbour liner , the Beaufort and Bedale are both made in England and are excellent quality, literally anything on these jackets can also be repaired through Barbour and with age they have a lovely patina , at the moment I’m looking to buy the Beaufort , I would buy either the olive or green jackets as they age better , good luck to you all 👍

I think the Bedale fit should naturally be a little loose to take into account the layering that will likely happen beneath. I am a 42" chest and my 40" Bedale is the perfect balance between fit and longterm function.
My chest measures about 37' and my bedale is size C36. I still have enough room to layer, and I can wear a sweater underneath or a fleece vest, or a suit jacket.

The reason why the Queen Elizabeth wore a Beaufort was because it could accomade a spare crown in the rear pocket ! That poachers pocket is huge ! A hat , gloves . If you want a warmer option there is also the Northumbria, it’s a longer coat, fit similar to the Beaufort although has two internal poachers pockets (removable and waterproof) rather than the one across the back. It’s also made from an 8oz waxed cotton whereas the Bedale and Beaufort are both 6oz waxed cotton, you notice the difference in weight wearing it! Only warning for that one is the hoods do not quite match (even though they are advertised as the same colour), I originally had the same hood as yours (the classic sylkoil hood) but have switched to the storm hood as the colour match is closer (although not quite perfect), although in time I am sure they will age similarly.
Brought the Bedale from an outlet store 10 years ago & loved it there’s something you can buy to zip into them that makes them warm enough for cold weather can’t remember the name but you can still buy them & it fits different Barbour jackets
I've heard that the older Barbour has button in liners. Newer ones as early as 2010 zip in. So if anyone owns a vintage Barbour, they may want to write the company about a button in liner.
I'm normally a slim 38 in everything but the Bedale runs HUGE. I sized down to a 36 like you did. Main issue is the sleeves run a bit short. Still feels boxy even in a 36. I liked the Bedale because I wanted the brown color. I dislke the massive collar size and trademark circle zipper though. Also wish the handwarmers were lower down. The more I write here the more I realize I need to just sell this jacket. I like the length of the bedale on you but actually prefer the trimmer chest of the beaufort. The bedale just looks SO boxy. I snagged mine for only $180.
Fair points, but I like the extra room to layer in the Bedale. I want to comfortably wear a thick sweater or even a sports coat underneath. you must be taller than me, because the sleeves were just right, and the jacket length looked too long on the Beaufort.
Lovely comparison. Luckily here in the UK we can walk in the stores and try them all on and find the perfect fit. For me the Beaufort wins. It’s the classic jacket and I love the ‘game pocket’ very handy when out. Super jackets that are as fashionable as practical.
3/26/24 Thanks for the video. I have several Beaufort jackets. Two in 48 and one in 46. I actually wear a size 50 sport coat and can size down quite a bit. This is exaggerated even more in the Bedale as you suggested. I bought a 46 Bedale and the chest size is 28 inches across which is akin to a size 56 sport coat. It fits like an XXXL. It is unusable in my opinion. I’ve ordered a size 44 in a Bedale and will see if this is a better fit. Seems strange to wear a 50 suit coat but have to buy a 44 Barbour Bedale to fit well. Very inconsistent sizing between the different models.
Thanks for the confirmation. I am also short 5'8 and weigh about 175. I wear a 40S suit jacket and am thinking about getting the Bedale in size 38. I was worried because I have short arms but that doesnt seem to be an issue.
I’ve just bought a Beafort, a 38 as i already got a 38 Navy Bedale (and an Antique Heritage Bedale in Sage, but this is slightly slim in cut). The Beaufort feels way slimmer than the Bedale, which wears with the typical Bell fit.
Beaufort! Better looking and more practical! I have used my Beaufort for 17 years! It's a jacket you can use for every occasion! Only waxed it once! And it gets better with age.👍
Bedale is short due to not riding up when used for intended perpose, equestrian. Bottom of it opens out to go over saddle and front of trousers while sitting. Some use as fashionable jackets that like a slim fit ,go down a size then find sleeves are to short, correct size they should be quite baggie to accommodate layering for different seasons. Most prefer these as lighter, slightly less chest tolerance than the Beaufort, I use both,Beaufort is heavier material and bigger all round ,for layering during the winter months. Has a great game pocket to put quarry in or while using in the city, shopping etc. Both fantastic outdoor jackets.
I like the fit of the shorter length Bedale on me. But yes, I am not the target audience hunter or equestrian. I don’t ride horses, or capture game. I Just like wearing a quality garment that keeps out the rain, and allows for layering.
@sc1 Doesn't matter really what you use for ,still a great quality product that will last test of time and very versatile. Enjoy and I'm sure you'll add to your collection over time.
Barbour jackets are great and will probably last you a lifetime if well taken care of. However, I recommend making sure there is the "Made in England" tag on the inside, as many Barbour jackets are now made in Asia or Eastern Europe.
@@sc1 if you live in the UK then it’s most likely yes, but in other parts of Europe/world more and more people are complaining that it’s not made in England, which I can understand considering that you pay the same price for a made in Moldavia and a made in England Ashby jacket
@@theoldman5924 The Made in England still applies to their core lineup, i.e. the Beaufort, Bedale, and Border. It can be recognized by sizing in numbers instead of S, M, L, etc.
At least, Bedale and Beaufort are made in ENG. Not sure about Border. Ashby and other model are usually made in Moldavia or China. However, the quality is quite the same, don't worry.
I’m currently looking for a Barbour and tried on a few today. I tried on the Ashby, which is the slimmer version of the Bedale and it was way too short on me. Then I tried the Beaufort and it was perfect. However, I’m 6’3” with a chest size of 38”. The Bedale looks more in proportion for yourself.
The Bedale works best for me. But I am not 6’3”. I am only 5’7”. I’m not interested in the slimmer Ashby. I would rather have some room to layer. Given your height, I would really consider getting the Beaufort.
@@sc1 Yes, I prefer the fuller cut too for layering. The Ashby was too tight under the arms. I only tried it as my local department store only stocked those two models. I’ll be going for the Beaufort. I thought I may need the Border being tall, but the Beaufort was fine.
@@paulmcgrew2932 I tried the 38 and the 40. The 38 fit and looked great on me, the 40 was a little too large in the body. However, it’s still warm here in England, so I only had a thin merino wool jumper on as a layer, so need to go back and try them on with a thicker lambswool jumper. I don’t want it tight around the arm holes. I went to the department store for trousers, so trying on the Barbours was just to gauge if I liked them or not after seeing photos. The Beaufort I tried on was also the 40th Anniversary model if that makes any difference to sizing. It’s tough for me as I’m very slim with wide shoulders. My waist is 31”.
@@paulmcgrew2932 Update! I’m going to have to retract my original statement, I returned today to spend more time with them and the sleeves on the 38” Beaufort are an inch too short for me when I relax my arms to the side. Seeing as I’ll be wearing it in damp weather it’s a dealbreaker. The body was perfect otherwise, this time I wore a thicker jumper and it was fine, not restricted at all on the upper body. The 40” was fine on the sleeves, but is just too big in the body for me. Looks like I’ll have to buy a Border (or similar) in 38!
I want to order Beaufort but don’t know which size to choose :/ i am 183cm tall, 84kg, 110cm chest and more athletic fit. Can’t decide if 40 or 42 be better for me
I have the same classic bedale and in my opinion the bedale is more comfortable for daily use. But I think you should be bought one size down,, it looks like to big
The Bedale is designed for the equestrian folk wheras the Beaufort is more for the hunting, shooting and fishing people. They were never intended to be fashion items. Which category do you fall in. If none better to buy a Goretex jacket.....no grease no odours and washable.
I don’t hunt fish or ride horses and I think these jackets look amazing. Just because a clothing item wasn’t intended to be a fashion item doesn’t mean it can’t be used for fashion. Look at workwear
I guess that is the reason for the bedale having the fabric cuffs and the Beaufort (and my Northumbria) having the polyester cuffs, if you are shooting you arms will be up more so the fabric cuffs will hold more water. I don’t use mine for shooting so may send to Barbour to get the fabric cuffs.
In the game pocket I’d store permanently the hood, and occasionally some groceries, magazines, books, whatever I don't want to carried by hand and is not to heavy. I used it all the time!
I tried the Beaufort size 40……man the arms are short so I went for 42 just to get the arms to fit. I’m always going to wear a sweater with it…..so fit is fine.
Great comparisons. I have been ordered a classic Beaufort 42” because I had already bought an Ashby XL. I hope that that could be right because I usually wear a EU 50” suitet. Could i’m right?
The game pouch was the perfect place to put my college block when I was at university. Today i would put my Tablet there, due to the fact it is waterproof.
Yes, according to the tag, the inner lining is 100% cotton. The drip strip (below the patterned lining) is 100% polyester. The outer is 100% waxed cotton.
Hello, i'm 1 metter 66 tall, 63 kilos. My shoulders are a little bit large. I tried the ASHBY model this day. He fitted well but i'm wondering if the BEAUFORT model ( I didn't tried him ). Could be more versatile. I mean to wear every season with others clothes and jackets under him. I'm afraid that de Ashby will a little tight with sometimes. Being small as I am, I don't like wearing clothes who are too large or too tight. I like when it's perfect sizing.
try or find the Bedale SL (White Label). It is shorter than Beaufort/Ashby and a have a modern slim fit comparing it to the classic Bedale (very boxy/baggy)
Have any idea what the C stands for in the size? On Barbour's website and in Orvis in person I only saw numbers (36, 38, 40 etc) for both the Beaufort and the Bedale. Is it a shorter version? Beaufort's 36 back length seems to be marked as 33 inches vs the 31.5 you mentioned.
@@sc1 Ah ok that makes sense, so according to the size charts they have the same back length of 33 inches (36 vs 36 classic), any idea why yours is shorter? Maybe they lengthened them in recent years?
Thank you for your video. I don't know which size will be best for me. I live in Canada. Usually, I wear medium size. I am 180 cm high and about 180 pounds. I hesitate between 36 and 38 size. Do you have a recommendation? Thank you again.
I would go for at least 38. I am 170cm and 140 pounds. My size 36 has just enough extra room. I think the sleeves on a 36 would be too short for you and the body might be too tight.
Hi, how are you? I want to buy a Barbour Bedale, but I'm not sure about the size. I tried an Ashby size S and his sleeves were too long for me, also in height. So I need your help, my measurements are: - 170cm Height - 72kg - 102 cm chest I don't like a fit too "baggy", but a middle way and looking at the barbour size guide I think a 34-36 might be okay, I don't know... After saying all of that, what would you say? Thank you!
Hi Luca, I'm just about your size. I bought the Ashby size XS. It is a snug fit with only enough room for a light sweater. Sleeves are just right in length. Just what I wanted.

I've heard that the older Barbour has button in liners. Newer ones as early as 2010 zip in. So if anyone owns a vintage Barbour, they may want to write the company about a button in liner.
This was really helpful
I don’t hunt or ride but wanted a god wax coat for walking the dog in the autumn months
I think the Bedale is perfect
It's a good versatile jacket for me.
Bedale for me. Also what a coincidence as only yesterday I rewaxed my Brooks Brothers jacket and Barbour briefcase. Looking like new now!
Fall is a great time for waxed jackets.
Excellent comparison , I like them both equally , I own the Beaufort .
Thanks for info. Bedale looks great on you.
Stumbled upon this after putting on my Bedale for the first time this fall. I agree on your comment regarding the fit. It is very roomy inside.
I like the extra room inside. allows me to layer.
Very inconsistent sizing between the different models.
yes, strange sizing. it takes a lot of research to find the right fit. it’s one of the downsides of Barbour. but I like the style.
An excellent comparison of both jackets, thank you!
@sc1
Doesn't matter really what you use for ,still a great quality product that will last test of time and very versatile.
I checked my Bedale and Beaufort, they both say Made in England on the tag.
@@muten1980 yes but just a shame to pay the same price for a jacket made in China and one made in England
Glad to see we've got more in common than watches. I'm top to bottom dressed in Barbour for most of the year :)
Cool, I didn’t realize so many Barbour wearers here.
Which size Beaufort worked for you? I am 6'3", too.
Got two classic Beadale'$ ;) Am hard on my coats both sent back regularly for repair!
I have two Bedale (Olive & Blue) and black Sapper. Bedale is better fit for me at 5'9 1/2.
Bedale fits me better.
I’m going to buy one for next duck/pheasant season, thank you for the review
I want to order Beaufort but don’t know which size to choose :/ i am 183cm tall, 84kg, 110cm chest and more athletic fit. Can’t decide if 40 or 42 be better for me
40 will be too tight in the chest. Definitely go 42.
@sc1 thank you for replying me and your help
You should get the Ashby. Just to complicate things.
Probably too slim for me. I like the option to layer.
@ it goes up to 3xl
I have the same classic bedale and in my opinion the bedale is more comfortable for daily use.
But I think you should be bought one size down,, it looks like to big
Bedale for me!
If it has a greasy feel on the fingers when touched, I wonder how much of that will rub off on a car seat.
I haven't seen any marks on my car seat. But yes, it will eventually rub off and need re-waxing. That is the nature of a waxed jacket.
The Bedale is designed for the equestrian folk wheras the Beaufort is more for the hunting, shooting and fishing people. They were never intended to be fashion items. Which category do you fall in. If none better to buy a Goretex jacket.....no grease no odours and washable.
And wears out in a few short seasons...whereas I still have Barbour jackets going back to the 80's that come up like new when occasionally rewaxed.
I feel like if you touch a fish to one of these jackets once that smell is never coming out
In the game pocket I’d store permanently the hood, and occasionally some groceries, magazines, books, whatever I don't want to carried by hand and is not to heavy. I used it all the time!
Thanks for the video. It was helpful!
I tried the Beaufort size 40……man the arms are short so I went for 42 just to get the arms to fit. I’m always going to wear a sweater with it…..so fit is fine.
Enjoy your Barbour! It’s meant to wear something underneath.
Do you have to continue to wax these jackets? I have no use for rain protection where I live. I just like the look.
Yes, you should re-wax it every few years, depending on how often you wear it.
Great review, I was debating between the 2.
me too. I finally decided on the bedale as my favorite
I'm also 5 '7 and got the Bedale. Going to get the Beaufort in Sage since from my pov it looks better on you.
Is the Bedale lined with 100% cotton? Or are there some synthetic fabrics used? Thanks for the video
Yes, according to the tag, the inner lining is 100% cotton. The drip strip (below the patterned lining) is 100% polyester. The outer is 100% waxed cotton.
@@sc1 Thank you! I think I will be pulling the trigger on a Bedale.
@@Templar112299 Its a good choice!
Got a Beaufort navy in 1999. Still wearing regularly. Just needs waxing every few years.
Hoggs of fife are my coats wool tweed and oiled cotton
so bedale is for shorter, muscular people. thank you
Great video man, thanks
I am 164 cm, which size should I choose between 32 and 34 (Bedale) ?
Have any idea what the C stands for in the size? On Barbour's website and in Orvis in person I only saw numbers (36, 38, 40 etc) for both the Beaufort and the Bedale. Is it a shorter version? Beaufort's 36 back length seems to be marked as 33 inches vs the 31.5 you mentioned.
I think the C means Classic
@@sc1 Ah ok that makes sense, so according to the size charts they have the same back length of 33 inches (36 vs 36 classic), any idea why yours is shorter? Maybe they lengthened them in recent years?
@@sc1 No, I have a vintage Bedale (1990) and the size label says C36.
Sorry if I missed it, but what size what the Bedale?
C36 in both
When I wear my Barbour, I look like a sheep farmer-always. Don’t know what peeps do to look stylish…
Hi, how are you? I want to buy a Barbour Bedale, but I'm not sure about the size. I tried an Ashby size S and his sleeves were too long for me, also in height. So I need your help, my measurements are:
- 170cm Height
- 72kg
- 102 cm chest
I don't like a fit too "baggy", but a middle way and looking at the barbour size guide I think a 34-36 might be okay, I don't know... After saying all of that, what would you say? Thank you!
Hi Luca, I'm just about your size. I bought the Ashby size XS. It is a snug fit with only enough room for a light sweater. Sleeves are just right in length. Just what I wanted.
Heeelp i want so bad the bedale but can’t sort the sizing:
-height 178cm
-weight 80 cm
-chest 107cm
I was looking To buy it 2 hand but seems like every barbour has its
Own mesures.
So far I was thinking of a c42 or c44 size
(The only jacket I cloud try on was the Ashby in L and it was perfect)
I agree, you should be a C42 or C44. If you have a flat stomach, go for the C42.
@@sc1 c42 even if I have a wide shoulders?
@@fdta6607 yes, the chest measurement should take into account the shoulders. and the raglan sleeves of the Bedale are forgiving.
@@sc1 thank you!
And might I ask you if u know why they have so many different ways of expressing the size?
Sometimes is a letter(S,M,L), other times is ‘C4..’, other times numbers in the thirties(36-38)
great video mate!!!i just recently bought my first barbour..classic bedale all the way..im glad i watched your video before i buy..im also 5’7” 68kg sz 36 is the right size for me..
im just confused regarding the tag my barbour only have 2 royal warrant printed not 3..😅😅😅..
Great Choice! I am considering getting the zip-in Barbour liner for the winter, but I read some poor reviews that it does not attach securely across the shoulders…
i think i would choose good quality sweatshirt or cardigan rather than their liner..😊😊😊..
Because the queen passed away
@@elfingord2189 It was because Prince Phillip died. After the Queen died it went down to one royal warrant: Charles III
@@sc1 avoid it! It fits bad, too rigid and make rigid the Bedale/Beaufort also. Layered wear is a better solution
Are they both olive color ?
Yes
What's the size of your Bedale ? I'm 1m75 (between 5'7 and 5'8) so I'm not sure which size should I go for
my classic Bedale is size 36. I am also between 5’7” and 5’8”

Hello, is the bedale darker than the beaufort ? Thx
Same color. The Beaufort is just faded slightly because it is 2 yrs old and the bedale is new.
what is your size in bedale? Thanks
