Steam Deck OLED vs LCD - Worth Upgrading?

  • I've had my hands on the Steam Deck OLED for the past week and want to talk about how it compares to the original. Is OLED worth the higher price point? If you already bought a regular Steam Deck, is it worth the upgrade? Let's talk OLED vs LCD display, battery life, larger screen, better wifi, and a variety of other little differences in this new model.

I love the handheld Steam Deck experience. I got my younger brother to grab a 64gb Steam Deck as an affordable option for a PC. I had an ssd ready for him. He eventually came around to it despite being stubborn. Baldur's Gate 3 has been alot of fun. I bought the 512gb OLED. My little brother is getting my LCD model. So I felt it was worth it.

There's two points for the Steam Deck OLED that Kevin failed to mention in this video which can have a tangible impact on gameplay: (1) the RAM in the OLED is significantly faster than the base Steam Deck which CAN actually increase performance in some games that were memory bandwidth constrained and (2) the higher refresh rate of the screen can make games look and feel smoother to play even if you're not running at 90Hz as the screen can now refresh twice if you set the frame-rate limit at 45FPS and 3 times at 30FPS. Digital Foundry actually confirmed through their own testing that response time in these situations on the OLED is indeed improved over the OG Steam Deck. When you pair this with the fact that the OG Steam Deck actually had a lackluster LCD display (even as far as LCD displays go it was quite bad in quality) it becomes REALLY DIFFICULT to recommend the base Steam Deck unless you pick one up on the cheap (the market is quickly being flooded with them as people sell off their OG models for the OLED so that actually might be the play if price is your biggest concern).

This also depends on where you live. Some places around the world you can buy the steam deck LCD 512gb, 64gb because they have to be imported into the country - for instance steam didn't make it available in NZ to buy directly from steam you have to buy it from retailers who have imported it and it makes the cost a lot more for the oled. I don't doubt that it's better but in my country the price difference is $300NZD which doesn't to me make sense make that investment worth it $100 for the screen makes sense sure no issues there but $300 no especially when it's $1009NZD for the LCD model

I waited for the steam deck for a reason, and i bought the 256GB LCD version, then 5 months later they come with the Upgraded OLED version, this made me somehwat pissed, as they said they would not come with upgrades, i said this on another video from someone else and a random dude became angry at me and said *Oh so valve should not come with upgrades because of you* like NO thats not what i said at all or what i mean, i find it shity that they come with 1 model and say they wont upgrade and then suddenly they come with new ones, it feels a bit like you were cheated out of the newer one, as i cant just get another one as what am i suppose to do with my other steam deck.

I really don't love the way they've split the screen options between the storage models, that feels like something you should be able to choose independently of the storage. It just seems like a sneaky way to force people who want the anti glare glass to pay for the bigger storage model, while also not being great for people who might NOT want the anti glare glass but do want more built in storage.
Generally seems like a great upgrade from the original just wish they weren't using this kind of annoying upselling technique.

When I first got my deck I played a game called Tomb Raider that has way better graphics than a PlayStation 1 game and that game drained my battery so fast I would be shocked if I got two hours out of it My estimate would have been an hour and a half max.
That game and blood stain ritual of the night are the two games that drain my battery the most. I don't play the most demanding games. Any game I'd assume is demanding (obviously I didn't assume blood stained would be demanding) I usually end up wanting to playing on my computer so I could be wrong.

People don't talk about the third option which is what I call half docked. I know that the steam deck doesn't have a kickstand like the switch does but my friend would use the doc and just not plug it into anything and so the inbuilt display would have the game on it then he grab a controller and play that way. That was his preferred method of playing.

I've never been much of a graphics snob I prefer performance and gameplay over graphics any day. the lcd is still great hardware but if you're not a very techy guy and you want games to work right out the box you're better off getting the oled model and not worrying about tweaking settings. I'm holding onto the lcd model until a SD2 drops.
not trying to bash on the oled, if you have it and love it good for you, but again the lcd model is still very relevant imo.

My biggest gripe with my steam deck was always the screen and I even received a ton of flak for it. That LCD was a bummer man just everything looked washed out grey really was distracting at times especially if you had the higher end etched screen which made it look even worse. It's so bad that yes I would say it's worth upgrading and don't get the 1TB just the 512 and upgrade the SSD yourself. The screen is that freaking bad it's like the used an LCD screen from the year 2001. Sale your LCD deck if you can or don't still get the OLED(you can use your old deck as a dedicated docked unit or something). Do not cheap out by buying a discounted LCD model unless it's going to a kid who you know will end up destroying it. My god I can't stress this enough. Lastly, unless you spend all day gaming outside in the sun it just isn't worth the visual hit you take with the anti glare screen imo. I don't know of anyone who won't at least be playing in a shaded area.
I'm being a bit over enthusiastic of course. If you have a Deck it does make the OLED a much harder sale and I understand everyone's financial situation is different. I just really hated that screen end rant.
