Tip about the “too much detail” thing:
Zoom about 40-50% and look if it’s visible.
If yes then keep it if not then just delete it or at least make it more noticeable if you really want to.
People focus waaayyy to much on detail.
Well of course if you’re planning to do as much detail as possible then ignore my comment lols.
most people won't zoom in so close to look at every little pixel, even if they did- HMmMmm you shouldn't post your art in full res anyways, since all the evil thieves out there sitting in their redboobles w stolen fanarts (and other) being put on random items and sold. Also aliexpress or other sites use other people's art most likely without permission, put them on stickers. I'm actually guilty of buying such stickers :x..
And as for printing, those details most likely won't even be noticed, unless they really stand out in some way, like glow dust particles or etc

He mentioned such a basic thing as layers, yet he didn't mentioned that you have to mirror your art from time to time to know if there are any flaws with symmetry and perspective.
Shading tip was a new one for me tho. Everything else is known already.
Flipping the canvas for me is a critical feature, I'm surprised that he didn't mention it either.
As a newbie in art, that just blew my mind. Can't believe i've never tried it, thank you!
The layers one was so silly, I don’t believe most digital artists don’t use layers unless they’re actively choosing to do so
Am I the only one that gets heavily confused when flipping? Like, in my mind, the artwork is bound to face into a certain direction, if I flip it, it's like flipping my living room. It confuses me so much that everything about it feels wrong...
LaNoir when you get used to your drawing your brain start to ignore the mistakes. When you flip your canva you see it from a new point of view. Because the people who will look at your art (it can also be your future self if you don’t like showing your drawing) are not used to your piece, you have to imagine that they will see it like it was flipped

Omfg yes, I do this shit all the time, spending on hour drawing and then realizing I've messed up my whole work because I was drawing on incorrect layer. That's so annoying. .-.
ohgod I hate when that happens, I used to mess that up so many times til I got used to managing my layers better
When i do that, i just select everything that should be in another layer, Ctrl+j to duplicate it in the same spot and then i merge it with the right layer. I don't work with layer modes so that helps
my habit of repeatedly checking layers every 10 seconds prevent that from happening to me lol
I just have separate drawing and painting layers and merge them when it’s time to blend that shit

Huki Huki I think it’s true to an extent, what he’s trying to say is try not to get caught up in the little things and look at the picture as a whole. Less is more. But obviously sometimes you need to zoom, just go overboard and you should be good.
Lol the way he says it is sort of exaggerated but the thing is think in shapes, know their hierarchy and simplify, don't get attached to details that will not matter when you step back to see the whole piece

For the detail, I think it depends. I wouldn’t say never zoom in. When doing 3D modeling I always zoom in to get those nice details. The problem is when you zoom in but never zoom out to see the entire image. I’d say after every detail to zoom out to see the work as a whole. Those small details could be amazing in the end.
My dude, I just started watching your videos, as a developing artist (product designer) a lot of the things you say apply pretty much in lots of parts of the industry that have creation and design. Mad respect for your videos and really highlighting the reality of things.

@@talesofacrookedmouth are you drawing on a small canvas? it's best to draw on around a 1000x1000 pixel canvas THE BIGGER THE BETTER, you can size down later. Also sometimes anti-aliasing is a weird thing, lines look somewhat blurry if you zoom in or out in some specific number %

I have been binging these for the last hour and I have to say one of thet hings I like about Ethan is he is always willing to cite examples from other artists he admires. It really is the sign of a professional.
Some artists draw on one layer to practise being more decisive and thinking of one's art piece as a whole. Similar to painting values in grayscale vs combining them with colour, or line sculpting vs seperating the sketch from clean lines, it's just two different methods. Whichever you choose to follow is up to personal choice.

The tip about layers is hilarious to me because my digital art only started thriving once I started painting on a single layer. It reminds me of painting in real life and I improved instantly after switching to single layer painting.

He's spot on about elbow before art I was big into penmanship (still am) read a lot of those old spencerian and ornamental style books from like 1910 and the first thing they drill is sit comfortably and have your paper at an angle and that allows for elbow movement, it's the biggest key to making flowing confident strokes for penmanship and art too.

Ethan is the guy I wish I would have had in my early years of art irl or online, mainly that charisma and obvious joking manner thats always followed by a comforting slap on the back saying something helpful but still knowing deep down you should be happy and having fun with art not feeling like a cog to be replaced.
