If you're at an art school I doubt it. Not to diss Ethan, he's great artist who knows his stuff. But if you have an art teacher at an art school they'll probably teach you the same stuff but in a different way. And what Ethan's teaching is something that is usually taught by a drawing teacher.

Honestly, his "meanness" is so motivating to me. It's funny and it shows that he cares about the people he is trying to help by pushing them to do better.
And if artists out there think he is being "too harsh" I can tell you, once you get into a real working environment there are people who will actually chew you up and spit you out. People who will actively tear you and your work apart and bring you down for no reason other than to see you fail. Ethan is most certainly not one of those people.

This man is legitimately the best teacher I have ever seen. All the other art channels are like, "all you have to do to improve your art is do your own thing," and stuff like that, without clarifying what you should do to do your own thing. Ethan is like, "BEFORE YOU DO YOUR OWN THING, you must know this," and at the beginning, you're like jeez this guy is harsh, but as you keep watching his vids and improving, you realise all he is saying is the truth. And since the truth can hurt, all the other channels baby you. And since those channels care more about how you feel than your improvement, they fail at teaching you what you need to know, but not Ethan. He knows that what you need to improve is the truth, even if it is harsh. That's what a good teacher does. They tell you truth, even if it's not what you want to hear, because that's how you will improve. Knowing what you did wrong is what you need to improve, because if you don't know what you did wrong, you will never fix it.
I learned this fairly recently and was lucky enough to already know before being told, it's ALWAYS function over form, because w/out function, you don't have the correct form. You cannot do *_anything_* without the basics, like anatomy. If you don't know how a human works in the first place, you won't be able to draw one.
The fundamentals are the most important thing. It's the cake or the pillar, and then you can build on top of that with your style and slight modifications, like the icing or the roof.

Originally i thought this man was crazy but then i started university and my professor told the same shit so i came back.
Lol my mans, he got straight facts.
I love it. I get to watch this mad lad for free. My art is getting more artistic.
I’m only in high school. Having a madlad already teach me the shit I might learn in college will give me a head start. I’m excited!
That was my exact thinking. Now, I'm in middle school rn so I definitely have not had the same experiences as you, but when I saw the first video I saw of him I remember my thoughts. I was like, "wth is he talking about?" He actually sounded kinda crazy, but his fun, funky personality kept me coming back and I realised he was just sharing wisdom in a fun way that kept you listening and, I have to say, he has some of the best art tips I've seen on the internet. My art has improved probably by 200% since I've started watching his videos.
I love how learning is free online and university is now obsolete 🤣
Your professor is also a commie, so I wouldn’t trust either one of them

I really need to know if he's using the same cigarette, or breaking a new one every new recording session. I don't think he even smokes, but that's another question I have.
Haha same. I thought "does he even smoke? I wouldn't want to buy cigs just for the joke, so maybe he does but then he's wasting them" ^^
I’m wondering if they’re fake and maybe he has some kind of wire connecting the two broken pieces so it doesn’t fall apart
Goldlink567 I was wondering too 😭😭
could be handcrafted paper things idk we made fake ones for a class play once
I think it's a real cigarette. I don't think he smokes though. Since I've lived with smokers I can tell you, they aren't happy if you break one of their cigarettes. Since they are an addiction and also can be costly depending on how much one smokes.
Also he doesn't seem to have smokers cough or anything so I assume he's not a smoker.

Then I realised was sarcasm is and it switched instantly. Was my favorite teacher for the rest of the time :D
Hey man, love your enthusiasm and love the character. I've been drawing my entire career, 28 now and growig slowly grumpy about the art industry but I have to say, your style is refreshing, clever and actually helpful. There is SO much shit on YT that is pretending to be helpful while teaching nothing on drawing and making people only more stuck. You talk about the absolutely most important stuff and thank you for it. If any young artist is reading this comment, take it from an older goat. This guy is right. About the form, the shapes, the line clarity, all of it. And if your style makes sth looks like a mistake, its not doing you good. Don't make excuses for yourself. But also stay possitive. We are here to make a million mistakes. As a wise man once said, if you are not making mistakes you are not working on hard enough problems. So try smiling every time you make sth and you think its bad. It means your eyes learned sth.
Great stuff, brother!!

Ethan Becker: “don’t do the thing or you’re making the WRONG decisions”
Polar opposites, yet so similar
Well, once you master the fundamentals, you can do whatever you want.
Bob Ross didn't use the wrong brushes...
Bob Ross is talking about art as a hobby whereas Ethan is talking about art on a professional level. If you're doing art for fun and to just chill out, there isn't a need for improvement unless you want that. But for publicity or whatever, the fundamentals Ethan's teaching are imperative
Ethan talks more from an animator/ character design perspective.
his advice could destroy some one with landscape photo realism in mind.
animators don't have time to perfect one painting. They need to get it right fast.
But Bob specifically wanted you to just go in and do it. Big strokes no pussying about, no indecision. Just paint. Pretty much what Becker is saying..
His second point about brush type is why I switched to mostly sketching with pen instead of pencil. My drawings started improving much faster bc I had to be more decisive
What I should be thinking: Wow, I'm really learning here
What I actually keep wondering the whole video: Was the scar on his brow a result of him aggressively hitting his forehead constantly with the stylus

Love this. By focusing on the intention behind a choice you are encouraging your fans to think about "why" they are making an aesthetic decision. Too many TH-cam channels: artists, filmmakers, etc. get caught up in what's popular and aesthetically pleasing without discussing why it's aesthetically pleasing in the first place. Intention gives the artist of any medium power.

I just imagined it and I hope my family doesn't think something's wrong with me
lmao and Id distract myself with the knives
One of the best art teachers I ever had was in FIRST grade when I was 5 or 6, and I STILL remember that important lesson. He walked up and said in a big friendly voice, "Oh, you have 'peanutitis.' That's when all your characters are the size of peanuts!" My characters were, altogether, the size of my finger on the sheet. He wanted me to use much more of the page, of course. And that lesson is always on my mind. Incredible impact on a life, for so few words.
For some reason, men seemed to be the best and worst teachers in my life, either putting total effort into it, or just not really caring at all.
In college, I took both art and computer science classes. I had a great teacher that really helped me. But at the end of the semester, she asked me what artist I liked or inspired me, and I told her the truth. "Frank Frazetta."
She looked and sounded like I had said "Adolf Hitler." But I took it that my inspirations were utterly invalid. Again, never forgot that, and coincidentally, never took another art class. Little things have enormous, very-long-lasting impacts. It took years to even see how her words shut me down.
I don’t think I’d be able to be in his class. I love knives too much.
I just realized Ethan if the opposite of Bob Ross and I kinda love them both???
edit: Thanks for de likes fam
Hit the nail on the head
Oddly enough they are more alike than they are different. The main difference is their medium influences their teaching. Ethan focuses on Drawing which means learning from the mistakes after the piece is complete while Ross focused on Painting which allows one to incorporate mistakes into the piece more dynamically.
But both ultimately focus on developing Confidence in your work.

So, recently I bought an Apple Pencil so I could finally get a taste of drawing with pressure sensitivity on my iPad tablet. Fail faster use pen so you can’t erase
My teacher used to forbid erasers. But sometimes not erasing is just wasteful. Often a line is just bad and needs to be discarded. It's not indecision, it's just wrong.
I've tried this for practicing. It's pretty much effective I must say. Although I don't do it anymore, I find myself rarely depending on erasers now and make a lot more confident lines. In art we should experiment a lot.
Hah just practice
I mean now whenever i sketch in my free time i use pen, it kinda helped me build confidence in my art and not work on one small thing for too long, of course erasers can help but i definately think drawing in pen on the side or something helps noticing mistakes and not overthinking art too much, especially helps when youre a bit too much of a perfectionist to the point u dont get much done
I always use pen in my “trash” sketchbook, if I fuck up I force myself to turn it into something else 😂

dude u are really inspiring me to get better, many just say "mistakes are mistakes just draw draw draw and if u don't get better u are crap" but u explain how it actually works and also actually shows that art is a skill everyone can learn not just a talent
you know, moving on is extremely important. i dont know if this is how you meant to interpret this video but it worked for me anyways. i set a timer for 1 minute and i try to sketch something that im interested in (like a face for example) then when the timer finishes, i finish. then i move on to 1 minute and 30 seconds time, then i move on to 2 minute timer. that saves a whole lot of time.
Sounds interesting. I might try this.
I can’t tell if that “hate” comment was a joke or not
Poe's law is strong with this one.
this guy's videos make me feel intimidated and inspired at the same time lmao
14:50 "Every single frame is a painting"… I did not expect that reference, but now I'm subscribed.
this dude has the most effective art teaching videos and i think its not just because hes a professional artist but also a professional ,, learner??? he knows how to actually learn the stuff,,,, and then he shows us how to learn the stuff,,, thanks king
Ethan’s videos singlehandedly getting me back into art after feeling demotivated with artists block. I even thought about trying out traditional art as well since I’ve been doing digital for a while. Not to mention I need to know what a wooden pencil feels like again...
bruh the cut in your eyebrow is so freakin' cleeean my guy
I am so happy you misspelled intelligent.
Ms paint is the way to goh
(͠≖ ͜ʖ͠≖)👌
Yeah
I love how you explained the exception of a brush with opacity and didn’t just move on, but actually reasoning why this pro knows what he’s doing. And explaining why it‘s not absolute. Take what works. But learning with trading wheel makes sense and I will follow your advice. Really liked the point with indescision.
I love that intelligent is spelt wrong, yet the advice is golden.
This tip makes so much sense, just trying it out made me realize I was being very lazy and haphazard trying to draw with those low opacity brushes.
I find myself passive aggressively calling my peers “baby” when telling them how to do anything now
Bruh... I was hooked within the first few seconds and subscribed to this guy after watching just this ONE video... and I never do that! 😅 The balance of quality information and quality entertainment is on lock. I absolutely dig it
You really don't deserve the hate... I find your videos so helpful and just straight forward. He points out the good and the bad so peeps can improve and use wat their good at. Also, it is a privilege to work where Skrek was made. HOw DaRe theY. SHREK IS THE LORD 😠
I love your teaching methodology or whatever
look at what you did right, then what you did wrong, then apply what you learned. I like how you critique art and encourage making mistakes during the process, instead of punishing ourselves.
