I was given some great advice for calculating the number of stitches in the starting chain, you subtract width of finished blanket from length, and that's your length of chain. EG - you want a blanket 40x34, your starting chain would be 6 inches long. The blanket will grow proportionately.
This is PERFECT. I am making a blanket in the Afghan flag colours for my husband and am to impatient for individual granny squares... A giant rectangle 3 times and sewn together will be perfect ❤
What an excellent tutorial this was! I watched several tutorials to try and learn how to make a granny rectangle and found them far too confusing until I found this one.
I'm a beginner with crocheting, this is the single BEST tutorial I have found so far :) you repeat the steps, you explain the steps more than once and it's so easy to follow. I was looking for a project I can do without much thinking and this looks like so much fun, thank you
I'm pretty new to crochet and had to watch this closely a few times but I'm off and running now with a lovely red/white/blue blanket that will wind up going to a VA home. I can't thank you enough for these clear instructions and teaching me how to create something beautiful!🥰
Hands down the BEST Tutorial on making a Rectangular Granny!! You’re an EXCELLENT teacher! Will be looking for more of your videos! Thank you kindly!! 😊
Interesting way to the beginning. I’ve always just started the first row with double crochets. The singles seems to give it a better foundation row. Thank you, Tanya! 🧶💝
Hello Tanya thank you for your tutorial I love but I’m very disappointing you say you bought the yarn at Hobby Lobby very disappointed because they don’t have good selection really no selection. at all love your tutorial maybe next time you can show how to start a round table crochet cloth 👍👍👍👍👍👍💐💐💐💐💐thanks
Super glad this tutorial was on here. I've been crocheting since I was 7 and I'm now almost 45. My nan and mum taught me how to crochet together. This was one of the things I did first. One was a granny square and the other was a granny rectangle because, you know, you have to learn both haha. I actually forgot how to start the granny rectangle and this was a great help. Thanks heaps. All I needed to remember was the beginning.
I’ve been trying to think how a stitch pattern would look like and there it is. Perfect! Now I have it from your video. I can’t wait to get started. Great tutorial thank you.
I love this! I love granny square once you get the foundation? it gets easier I can just go! I love that? "just go" Granny Square is my all time favorite🥰
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It was so easy to follow and I am well into my own stash buster blanket! You are the best! I can’t wait to check out your other tutorials…
I found you on Pinterest. I was looking for a granny rectangle crochet pattern and your was the one I wanted, a more substantial first chain to start the blanket. Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Thank you. 🧶💜🙏🏻
So that will depend on the yarn weight you will be using. The sample shown in the video with medium #4 worsted weight yarn and 20 (18+2) foundation chains after 10 rounds had an approx size of 9" x 15". Each round with my gauge is adding approx 1" to the size. So, based on what size a king is - approx 100" x 108". So I would need to add an additional 93 rounds to reach 108" in length which would add 93" to the width for a total of 102". That would end up pretty close to the desired size but you could also go down to a foundation chain of 17 (15 + 2), work up a swatch and see what your measurements would be. I hope that isn't too confusing and actually helps! So glad you love it! 💕🌸
Very well demonstrated. Thank you for your clarity. Will give this one a go. Much prefer rectangle to square and the single crochet beginning looks much more tidy to me. Thanks!
Can you do this without any holes in it.. I'm so glad you're showing me cuz the other ones are not as good as you are now I understand how to do it I think it's very beautiful
Sure! I haven't tried it yet but if you work a double crochet stitch in each st and then work the corners the same. Work a couple of rows and see if it is lying flat before continuing on. I hope that helps!
So glad you like it - thank you so much for watching! The I Love this yarn is one of my favorites as well! So many colors available I can always find the shade I need. 💕🌸
Thank you I have been trying to lean this but you have explained it so well that I now have it started. My problem was the corners! So thank you so much! Mine will be variegated thread.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make and share this video.I am trying to make this 60 inch wide. Can you please tell me how many chains I should start with. Thank you very much🥰
Ooh boy, I'm having trouble! I'm trying to just learn the right stitch, so I'm not changing yarn at the end of the row(s). The instructions for ending a color and starting a new one are great, but if I'm just continuing with the same yarn, what's my stitch going to look like? Do I do 4 clusters at the end of round 2 and continue from there? (Cluster ch2 cluster ch2 cluster ch2 cluster, if I'm counting correctly.) Then I'd continue with the 3rd round, right? Thanks for the tutorial. I guess since I'm not switching colors I'm getting confused!
I'm thinking this would make a lovely prayer shawl! They're usually about 18" x60" so I'll have to do some figuring to see how long to make my initial chain. I'm also wondering if the chainless foundation stitch would work with this. Suggestions?
I’m just a beginner and like this pattern. I’ve gotten to the size I want- how do you finish off? Several others I’ve done finish with a single crochet in each stitch around the perimeter.
It depends on what you are looking for on the finished look. Do you want to add a border or leave as is? If you aren't adding a border you could simply finish as is or to tighten the edge you could simply add the single crochet stitches around the outside edge. If adding sc stitches only work sc into the stitches not the space between clusters and then work 3 sc stitches in the ch-2 corner spaces. I hope that helps! 💕🌸
Hi Tanya Thank You for sharing this pattern so patiently that made a novice feel like it is doAble. Just one thing wasn’t mentioned. What if we are trying to do it just one color yarn. So it needs to just go round and round but it wasn’t mentioned where to go after the first corner without cutting off and changing color. If you can let me know that would be great!!!
Happy to help! If you are working with one color instead of fastening off you would sl st join at the end of round 2 to the top of the ch-3 of the first cluster made, then slip stitch in the next two dc sts of the cluster to the space between clusters, sl st in the space and work a beginning cluster in the space - ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp. Continue on in the pattern in the same way. I hope that makes sense! So glad you found the tutorial helpful! 💕🌸
You have many different options for a border on a granny rectangle! You could work a base of single crochet stitches - working a sc in each dc stitch around + 3 sc stitches in each corner. Or you could work pretty much any border right onto the last round - either working into each stitch or use a shell stitch border that would work in the spaces between the dc clusters, or work a block stitch border - work one round of sc in each sp between clusters and ch-2 between sc stitches like this one: nanascraftyhome.com/crochet-easter-blanket/
At around the 3.50 mark when working down the chain, should I be picking up two loops (going through the middle of the chain) or just a single loop on the far outer edge of the chain?
Great question! If you aren't changing colors I would recommend slip stitching over the previous round's dc stitches to the first space then work sl st, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp and then continuing on. That way fewer ends to weave in and no fastening off. I hope that helps!
A lot will depend on the gauge you have with the yarn and hook you choose. If you were to have a similar gauge to mine I would start with a foundation ch in the neighborhood of (72 - 78) +2 range. After about 4-6 repeat rounds, measure and see if you will end up in the ballpark of your desired finished measurements. I hope that helps!
Im currently working on this! I have a problem/question though and im hoping you or a commenter can help with it. Between my granny stitches, i dunno if im not keeping my twnsion tight enough, but i get weird spaces in the yarn. I zoomed in on yout video and you dont get the same. I considered doing a ch1 between granny stitches but i dont like the look that creates. Is there any way i can send a pic to show you what im talking about? Maybe its normal? I made my neice the taylor dress and had the same problem but its not a visual issue until the last row because there isnt another row to hide it. Within the work the spaces are hidden by the next row. Maybe im overthinking it but in all the videos ive watched, they never seem to have the same thing happen which leads me to think im not doing something correctly, however everything else looks as it should I would very much appreciate if anyone has the same thing happen or could explain how to avoid it happening :)
I would be happy to look at a photo to see if I can tell what might be happening. It may be that your tension is loose creating what looks like a noticeable gap between clusters. You could try to tighten your gauge working the final round or work a round of sc stitches as an edging to tighten that last round. If you would like to send me a photo my email is tonya@nanascraftyhome.com
Absolutely you can turn after each round! I have another tutorial for standard granny square that uses that technique and you can find that here: th-cam.com/video/94Zou5SVV-U/w-d-xo.html
If you're not switching colors how do you get back to the center of that chain two space? If you're continuing on with the same color it's awkward to be in the top of the original chain three while trying to do the first stitches of the second row in the space to the right of where you are
Absolutely happy to help! Yes, you would want to slip stitch into the top of those stitches to get to the ch-2 corner space when you aren't changing colors from round to round. I hope that helps! I should have included that info in the video for you. Thanks for watching 💕🌸
I have a complete tutorial to help you make any preferred size rectangle and you can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/eMEx18utSIc/w-d-xo.html I hope you find it helpful!
I would recommend changing up the yarn to something durable that will hold up to a lot of abuse. Cotton is a good choice but does have a tendency to stretch out of shape if it gets wet a lot. T-shirt yarn would be a good choice but can get pricey. Macrame yarn would give your rug a more rustic look. Acrylic would definitely work because it is very durable and won't break the bank. Just make sure to change the hook size to match the yarn weight you are using. I hope that helps! 🌸
If you don't want to change colors at the end of each round you could slip stitch to next space between clusters, work a beg cluster in next space and continue on in pattern. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching!
So happy you love the video and found it helpful! Thanks for being here! So that will depend on the yarn weight you will be using. So I would need to add an additional 93 rounds to reach 108" in length which would add 93" to the width for a total of 102". You could work up a couple of swatches with different lengths of foundation chain, measure and then adjust as you need to. I hope that helps! 💕🌸
@@kimscales5150 yes, I would start with that and then measure once you have done a few rounds and see what kind of measurements you are getting. With my gauge I was adding about 1" in width and length each round so I could easily know what my finished project would be and how many rounds I would need to get to a specific size. Happy to help!
I was given some great advice for calculating the number of stitches in the starting chain, you subtract width of finished blanket from length, and that's your length of chain. EG - you want a blanket 40x34, your starting chain would be 6 inches long. The blanket will grow proportionately.

What do you mean put a slip stitch in the top of the chain 3? Do you put it in the 3rd chain?
Yes, you will slip stitch join in the top of the beginning chain 3 - the third chain. I hope that helps! 💕🌸
So if i want to make 51×33 blanket how long my starting chain should be ?
I have a complete tutorial to help you make any preferred size rectangle and you can watch it here: th-cam.com/video/eMEx18utSIc/w-d-xo.html I hope you find it helpful!
So you are really stitching. In back loop only each side
Tonya to make a porch rug would you change anything like yarn or needle?
I would recommend changing up the yarn to something durable that will hold up to a lot of abuse. Cotton is a good choice but does have a tendency to stretch out of shape if it gets wet a lot. T-shirt yarn would be a good choice but can get pricey. Macrame yarn would give your rug a more rustic look. Acrylic would definitely work because it is very durable and won't break the bank. Just make sure to change the hook size to match the yarn weight you are using. I hope that helps! 🌸
What if i want to use just one color 🤷🏼♀️
If you don't want to change colors at the end of each round you could slip stitch to next space between clusters, work a beg cluster in next space and continue on in pattern. I hope that helps! Thank you so much for watching!
new subscriber love the videos, so what do you think would be a good foundation chain if i wanted a large blanket, how many do you think??
So happy you love the video and found it helpful! Thanks for being here! So that will depend on the yarn weight you will be using. You could work up a couple of swatches with different lengths of foundation chain, measure and then adjust as you need to. I hope that helps! 💕🌸
@@nanascraftyhome ok so do the 18 plus 2 and just keep going and do about 103 rounds to be king size, ? correct, thanks, i really appreciate it
@@kimscales5150 yes, I would start with that and then measure once you have done a few rounds and see what kind of measurements you are getting. With my gauge I was adding about 1" in width and length each round so I could easily know what my finished project would be and how many rounds I would need to get to a specific size. Happy to help!
