I have been comparing tutorials for the rectangular version, and your method gives the best start. The others put the return in the same stitch which makes the granny funny looking in the middle. I have viewed several of your tutorials and really enjoy your teaching style.

I know that this video is years old, but I want to thank you for putting it here. I retired in 2021 and I'm getting back to crochet and wanted to make a blanket for my bed. I made one using your video, and I love it. Now my Mother-in-Law is living in an assisted living facility, so I'm making another one for her. I need to make it kind of quickly and this is perfect. Thank you very much, Robin.

Thank you for this excellent tutorial...I turn my work in order to keep my squares straight...wish I could have seen you turn yours to see exactly how you did it...This is my first time watching and I cannot crochet from a pattern...I have to see it done and with some effort, I figure it out...I’ve been crocheting since I was 12 and I’m now 81...I’ve made MANY Afghans over the years and many other items too, but I’m like you, I prefer a rectangle rather than a square...so I’m going to give your pattern a try and I like yours because it is tighter...I think it looks best that way and I crochet tight also...🧶

I am focusing on revamping my existing 50 patterns then combing my 10-12 notebooks where I have jotted down my design ideas and writing them into new patterns. I LOVE your tutorials! I had stopped crocheting around the time I had my 2 boys, working fulltime and just that typically Mum, trying to do everything. Then about a year ago, I started back, and found how many tutorials there are on TH-cam! So many! Yours really are my favorite. So many others talk so much, about other things, not the patterns! You gave your helpful hints, showed your yarn and needle size also. But some people take FOREVER talking, talking, talking! Then, they finally get started with the patterns. A lot like what I am doing, going on and on. So I get it. So happy that your still doing tutorials!!!!! Thanks!

  • @LittleMissJess

I absolutely LOVE this granny rectangle pattern. It is the only one of its kind, in so far as I can tell, with a fully solid center block instead of a double line of double crochets. It makes for a much better and more even appearance. The only amendment I would make is, instead of chaining 2 when you start a new round I chain 3. I find that connecting to the top of a ch2 makes my last cluster of double crochets look disproportionate, like its leaning to the left. (The 1st chain tends to tighten up a bit as Im working my round, which shortens the length of the ch2). This was fixed by adding an extra chain and then slip stitching to the top of the ch3 at the end of the round. Of course, this is a matter of tension.
I crocheted my first blanket with a 5mm hook, and some medium/4 red heart and bernat yarn. My starting chain was 27 stitches and I used 5 balls of yarn (roughly 300-400 yds each). I finished the blanket in under 2 weeks, crocheting in my spare time and the end result was a perfect throw blanket or large-lapghan size, Just big enough to almost cover the surface of a full size mattress (without hanging over the edges).
Im already starting on my next one, which I plan to make a little bit bigger than the first. Looks like everyones getting blankets for Christmas! 🤣
EDIT: It has ben 1yr since I wrote the above comment and I have a new tip to add. I found that, after washing the blanket a few times, the first row of double crochets that are attached to the starting chain began to pull on the chain stitchs they wete attached to. This created giant "holes" between the cluster and the starting chain. The reverse side of clusters, where you are just inserting double crochets in the spaces between your starting row clusters did not have the same issue, since those dbc clusters were not attached to a single chain, but were instead attached to the entire chain row.
I am testing a new method to fix this, wherein only the first and last dbc of the starting row are attached to an individual chain, and the rest of the dbc are just made around the entire chain row. So, for example, if you chain a row of 18, you would insert one dbc into the 6th chain from your hook. Then place 13 dbc's around the entire chain-row. Next, insert one dbc into the last chain stitch. Chain 5, and slip stitch into the same chain stitch you put that last dbc into. Turn your work, count 3 dbc's, and insert a dbc cluster (3 dbc's) around the chain row, between the third and 4th dbc. Then count out another 3 dbc's and place your next cluster of 3 dbc's between the 6th & 7th dbc. Repeat to end and follow the rest of the instructions as normal.
This _should_ prevent the first row of clusters from pulling at the chain stitches, since only the first and last dbc's are anchored to a specific stitch, and all the clusters are, instead, anchored to the entire chain row. It will look like your dbc's arent clusterinh together correctly at first, but once you turn your work and start inserting a cluster of dbc's in the space after every 3rd stitch, the clusters will begin to group up and form properly.
I havent finished the blanket I made this ammendment on but, hopefully, it will prevent any "holes" from forming where the clusters are attached, since they wont be able to pull on a single anchor stitch.

Thank you so much for those details. I was trying to work out how big to make the rectangle for an afghan or blanket. Now I can get started!

I realize this post is 3 years old, but I just came across it. Oh how I thought I was alone in disliking square blankets! (Not a fan of round or other odd shaped ones either. Lol) I’m taller than I am wide (thank God!) so I REALLY like rectangle afghans. I LOVE the “granny” stitch. Thx for the tutorial!! Keep up the great work you do!!

I have a question. I am in the process of making this beauty and I would like to ask if you can (at some point) stop adding rows in width and only add rows in lenght? How to do it????🙏

OMG! I tried someone else's directions for crocheting a granny rectangle and I had to undo the entire project after ten rounds. Your instructions were easy to understand. And yes, it's rectangle. (I used a cake yarn skein that changes colors. I will try different yarn colors for the next one.)
