    You know, in Load Development there is a lot of Science, and a lot of Personal Perseverance, a lot of Research, and a dose of Luck does not hurt either.
    My own personal demon is a 7mm Weatherby that will put 3 bullets in one hole and 2 more 3 to 4 inches away in random areas.
    I might need a Preist for that one.................LOL

    • @SBSATS

      You happen to still have that Weatherby 7mm Mag? I have a bunch of brass for that caliber, but can't find anyone who shoots it.

    Love these long vids. Thanks for all your hard work!

    You need to do like a "conclusions" or "lessons learned so far" every now and again for specific calibers, to review things you've done in the past, and where you plan on going next. I'm personally looking at going for a 300blk in an 8 or 9" barrel, but mainly want to go subsonic with very heavy 210/220/230gr bullets. Have you tried the Lee 230gr's cast, in a subsonic pistol yet? I'd be OK with 2-3 MOA, as I doubt i'd take it beyond 200 maybe 300 yards (and probably with supersonics at those ranges)

    You are wrong Johnny! This is a great, instructive video! There is a tremendous amount of knowledge to be gained here. Thomas Edison was once asked " What is the definition of success"? He replied: "Success is 99% failure!" Your video spoke volumes about your intelligence. I envy you.

    Start off by saying I love your videos. I'm a subscriber. I've been following this 300 thread all the way through as I am considering a blk build. But with all the troubles you've had with heavy subs, it's got me wondering if it's even worth the hassle. I would want to run heavy subs for self defense and therefore want acceptible short range accuracy and dependable expansion. Did I miss a video? Did I just forget after watching all of them? Or is this round just not worth the trouble?

    These videos are great and so informative. I learn a lot.
    Have you thought about testing a 1-in-5 twist barrel to test stability of heavier (220gr+) bullets? I’d love to see a comparison of twist rates with your methodical approach and reloading acumen.

    Hey JRB,
    I know this is a yr or 2 old video, but still wanted to say thank you for, one; all your videos and two; I especially respect that you post vids where things worked out not so great.
    Ive been a long time viewer, and I can safely say that Ive learned a crap load from you and thats a big reason why I watch. So these videos are very helpful in that way!
    Im writing this as your hitting your 6-7mo mark on twitch now too and while some may not appreciate that new format, or the vids where results arent optimal, Im pretty sure youve got a large following that does appreciate it, so keep it up and thanks man!
    Btw, just saw, somehow for the first time, your Elite Tactical Warfighter skit. Brilliant man

    Man, I gotta say, your channel and your ability to teach through it has been absolutely amazing.. I began reloading roughly 6 months ago and I find myself going through your vids almost everyday, some I’ve watched multiple times..I’ve learned A TON of great info! Gotta say THANK YOU! Wanted to recommend to maybe look at the Honey Badger barrel by Q. It’s a 7”, 1:5 twist! Has a very unique gas block that is installed with a screw on nut! I have one, and because of the fast twist it stabilizes subs like no other!! Just a suggestion as it might help you as you try more of these types of problematic bullets for 300blk.. Keep up the great work!!!

    I wonder why the gates twist barrel I could find when I put my .300bk together was 1/7 when it was designed by AAC as a 1/5. That seems like the ticket to stabilize the 220gr. Bullets

    Have you considered trying 277 Wolverine?
    Also, have you considered trying some Shooters World powders (Blackout or Socom-SBR)? They're supposedly really good for both the 300BLK and 277WLV, but I haven't had opportunity to try it in either caliber yet.

    Looks like a rifling twist rate issue for that barrel / bullet length combination. The bullet needs a faster twist rate to stabilize.

      I've tried their 55 gr varmageddons in an Anderson 24" upper, and their 6.5 140 gr RDFs in a rem 700. Can't get either one to shoot better than 2 moa. Yet both rifles will shoot .3-.5 moa with Hornady Vmax and Eld-x respectively.

    • @thejohnnybob
      @thejohnnybob 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mind you I was pushing these bullets faster than recommended since my rifle liked to let these bullets jump .120" to the lands for some reason. COAL for my rifle was 2.700" if my memory serves me correctly.

    • @wmcdicksonsr974
      @wmcdicksonsr974 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My experience with Nosler products is very much the other way and I have shot literally THOUSANDS of ballistic tips in everything from light loaded 22 Hornet (40gr) for squirrels up to & including full power 375 H&H loads with the 260gr and my m700 (300 Win Mag) is absolutely frightening with the new 190gr Accubond LRs (consistently less than 1/2 moa extreme deviation [NOT that silly center to center crap] @ just over 3000fps, set to jump no more than 0.010")
      The tricks to getting them to perform are 1.) THOROUGHLY clean your chamber's throat regularly.
      2.) Weight sort them rather than just pull them straight out of the box.
      3.) Set them no more than 0.020" off the lands (closer is better). They do NOT react well to a lot of freebore, even in Weatherby chambers.
      Using those steps, there has only been one bullet/cartridge combo I could not get to stay sub-moa and that was one I knew was not likely to work to begin with (220 Swift, 1:14 twist, 60gr BT) but I still felt the need to try anyway.
      The above does NOT mean that I shoot exclusively Nosler.
      Quite to the contrary, my 284 Win (Winchester m100) greatly prefers the Speer 160gr Hot-Cor over everything else, the 45/70 (Marlin m1895) definitely prefers Hornady's 325gr FTX and my (personal favorite) Remington Seven in 223 Rem (1:14tw) is ridiculously reliable at 5 in 3/4MOA with the Hornady 55grSP.
      But I also use only better quality, FULLY PREPPED and weight sorted brass too. though.

    • @hpfuhl
      @hpfuhl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      My .270 shoots nothing but Nosler rounds. 130gr Parts and 130gr Ballistic consistently holds 1 MOA groups (this is me not the bullet) no issue. I follow Nosler's reloading recommendations and use H4831SC and have had no issues.
      I seat the bullet to their recommended length and don't sort them out by weight. I do spot check periodically, but have never had the skew in weight others claim to have.

    Mr Johnny,
    Documented failure is still potential knowledge.
    Thank you for all the work you put into these videos. I appreciate it.
    I would like to propose an idea for a video. I'm not being smart or creative or trying to prove any point. I am honestly curious about the idea of a "brush gun" being more well suited to shoot through light brush cover with little effect on accuracy.
    I would love to see a test comparing a high velocity smaller diameter projectile verses a lower velocity larger diameter heavier projectile going through light woodland cover. 100 yards, baseline group, then light brush cover interference for each type at 20, 40, 60, 80 yards.
    I personally think that if a game target's vital area is obscured by enough foliage or brush to possibly interfere with the path of the projectile, it isn't a clear shot. Meaning that I think any rifle bullet can bust through a few twigs. If there are enough twigs to interfere with a bullet, there isn't clear enough visibility to positively identify the target.
    Thanks, Johnny!

    Nothing wrong with a failed experiment. If the results were guaranteed, what would be the point? As far as this bullet goes, the shape is so different that perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that it doesn't stabilize at the same velocity, with the same twist rate barrel. That's a lot of "nose" to push through the air without enough gyroscopic stabilizing.
    By the way, love your videos and the detail that you show.

  • @bryanst.martin7134
    @bryanst.martin7134 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That live round extraction was a "Nail Biter"!
    Large projectile instability may be caused by the round not being loaded concentric. The Ogive is long and round so however the bullet starts the lands, it finishes that way. The point only 1mm off will cause an imbalance that turn the bullet into a corkscrew. It may be better to order seating cones specifically for the Big Boys. At their per unit cost, it would be worth it.

    My 16" 300blk Sota Arms upper on a YHM complete lower LOVES Hornady 110 grn V-Max flat base bullets. Unsuppressed, and supersonic it shoots about 1/2 MOA, @100 yards, all day long. I have chrono data, just not handy, sorry. But, I could NOT make it shoot 125 grn Nosler Ballistic tip boattail bullets to save my soul ! Ft feed, fte, and when it did fire there was no group to be found, they were all over the place. Charge amount did not matter !! Ridiculous and frustrating. It shoots 150 FMJ Sierra Boattail just fine ? It also LOVES 125 grn Sierra flat base ? All loaded over H-110 or LilGun powder using cut down 5.56 brass. I recently bought a PSA 8.5" pistol kit and built it with the finest Anderson stripped lower I could find (was the ONLY stripped lower available in my small town). So the odysse begins again. I plan to add a suppressor soon, so I'll be getting into subsonic as well... We'll see, lol. Thanks for the AWESOME upload (new sub) 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

    Ahhh, don't worry. Even crummy results are results. And you totally make up for it in entertainment value! I'm thinking those big Nosler BT's are a loser. I loaded 125gr BT's and they were awesome, however thinking the same idea with 100 more grains weight just isn't viable. This is unproven, total opinion speaking. But I've seen this before with lots of other products. You start using the same ideas with different parameters and you get way different results.

    I feel like starting the slow clap because you really gave that hell. Man you tried just about everything in the book to get those Noslers to fly straight and group but they just wouldn't have it. I would be interested as I often am at what Nosler reccomends for load data to optimize performance. Most companies that put out a projectile will stand behind it and offer load data for best performance or at least something similar. I would be highly interested in Noslers recommendation but if I had to guess I would say this is one of those loads that gets released in hopes that people will buy an ass load of them before they realize it's junk. Some companies will release crap products that look really bad ass full well knowing they don't perform anywhere near advertised but hope to make a shit load of money on the cool factor before people like yourself bring to light just how shitty they really are.

  • @coreymoyers
    @coreymoyers 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wish you could try a higher twist barrel. The longer and heavier the projectile, the more spin it needs to stabilize. It's possible to over stabilize with too much twist but you almost never see it as much as under stabilized. The tradeoff is that you lose a few ft/s with more twist, but that's a non factor when you want to run subsonic. 1:7 would have worked I bet. I would go with 1:6 if available.

    I don't have definitive data between barrel mfrs, but BA and a few others don't seem to give significant performance increases over any other 1MOA or less production barrel. What is your experience on it? I think fancy names and prices belong in the West where quality is how much you paid for it. Not actuality. I haven't been to the range this year, so stop complaining.

    Did you ever get the bugs worked out on this projectile? I'm thinking about buying 200 of them but videos are sparse.

    I've never once gotten a Nosler bullet to shoot out of ANY of my guns. They all pattern like buckshot, nevermind a group.

    Round performance was disappointing, but hopefully they get better with possibly more testing. Probably know more then me but i would put a couple more rounds of regular supersonic rounds through that barrel as well, it being so new. I like to break in brand new barrels, and i tend to get better performance out of them when i get at minimum a couple 100 rounds through them.

    Cut it out pal, at the slow speed it was going you can not possibly expect it to behave like it was doing over 1800 -2000fps, a bullet traveling at long distance is dropping in speed down to about 1800 and bullets are not designed to expand at such a slow speed, test it again at 2500fps and you will see what it was designed to do.

    What is the difference in diameter measured between the barrel extension exterior dimension and the upper inner diameter dimension? I’ve seen where these are good fits and people adding a cut up coke can to take up some of the slack. That could be causing the accuracy inconsistency in the barrel & upper combination.

    Maybe I missed it but what was the twist rate of that barrel? Those were some really long bullets but .300 blk is all about heavy subs so it sucks that it wouldn't stabilize them.

    Your twist rate may not be fast enough to spin the big bullets in that short of a barrel. Probably need a different barrel to shoot the subs.
