Bodywork and upgrades on the super cheap, low mile, daily driver Grand Am

  • The super cheap 2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT is back. It is time to put the cheap daily on the frame rack and pull out the quarter panel. The hood needs to be replaced because it is too boring even for me. I'll get the rest of the car ready for the painting gnomes and wait for them to do their magic. This could be the cheapest low mile Grand Am I have ever built but I am not ready to make that claim until it is completed!

Thank you for the slow down on how to remove and save the clips @ 2:00 or so. These little things boost your subscriber numbers plus, sharing your knowledge is HUGE! Really nice on the 'little' framework. LOVE that you changed the hood to the one you did. Last week, I commented about how PONTIAC was about the only one to offer good looking hood scoops! You make it easy for the paint crew since they don't have any 'masking parties' - you took everything off! LOT cleaner that way.
Scott is this a daily driver for you or going for sale. Nice job as usual and appreciated. Thank you. Sonny (CT)

So much double sided tape on these. My old manager used to rebuild these all the time. I was the roaming gnome at the time. Drill welds for the front rebar and clean double sided tape. Then detail.

sounds stupid, but thanks for saving the car, and putting that much effort into looking after it, so many good honest cars will get scrapped because the owner didnt wanna pay for a small repair because oh its getting "old". I understand why, but i appreciate you saving this little diamond in the rough

I really like your way of working as you take the time to explain everything you do as you go along, Especially how the jib works to pull out dents. The cars going to be slower now you've taken the go faster stripes off though 🚗 LOL

Don’t worry, the hood will add the horsepower lost on the stripes. 😂

The idea of a cheap car in America is so much more different than it is in the UK. A cheap car of this size in the UK is a boring Ford Mondeo or a Vauxhall Vectra. These Pontiacs and other FWD V6 cars from this era are kinda interesting in a strange way. I'd love to drive one. Much more interesting than a Mondeo with a 1.8L engine with 108bhp.

I enjoy these Grand Am builds. Makes me miss the ‘99 GT I had back in the mid ‘00s. These and Aleros are getting increasingly harder to find in good condition anymore, I’ve kind of been looking, but not too seriously for a Coupe version, but most of what is in the price range I would pay are trashed.

For those that paid attention, you probably noticed that once you take off the body cladding, the doors are the same as the Aleros.
Sold these new back in the day. Def a fun car to drive.

Lots of panels under the sheet metal are the same. All the drivetrain and suspension as well. I did rebuild a few Aleros back in the day. They did not hold their value or sell as well as the Grand Ams though.

Nice job again mate. Its just my personal thing but I wouldn't put the door lower plastics back on (what we call 'naff') unless you are trying to keep it factory original which I think you decided against with the new bonnet (hood).
Got to admit looking in from the UK I am jealous of the prices you guys pay for cars and parts.

Cars of the 80’s an early 90’s were easy to remove pin strips, all you had to do was wash it. You need to paint this one blue an put in the pimp purple interior like the Buick!

  • @tyronebateslibra9435

Undercoating the vehicle under carriage will help preserve it. May have to do that every winter. Of course washing the car also will help prevent the salt from eating the body away.

I had my share of bleed though. Sealer helps, it will be sealed as a precaution.
