Transmission has always been the Achilles heel on those w-body cars. They aren't horrible to swap out but should be built if replacing. Manually shifting it helps as it jacks the line pressure up but that's just a bandaid too. Awesome cars when they are running good. I loved my 00 Grand Prix for the 6 years I had her.

I bought an Olds Regency with 97K miles for $300 and the intake, flush the motor & full service. $2500 sale. The "Fire danger?" Rear valve cover gasket can dry out & leak oil onto the exhaust manifold. When I come through Oklahoma with it, Randy, you may want to see my Regal GS I bought from GM. Yes, replace MAF. Also, check that the fuel pressure regulator is working, dying while driving is a good symptom.
Bad temp sensor will do similar. So many things that the computer checks will give odd symptoms.
Did you add the correct type antifreeze???
Power steering fluid is probably still low! Or, a failing pump. OR, simply a stretched serpentine belt!
KNOW exactly how to flush coolant, and bleed out air, otherwise you will get low coolant light.
Replace AC pump, leak test, and recharge system will work fine.
Easy investment, install a new water pump and ALL coolant hoses.
3800 V6 was originally an AMC design, purchased by GM, from AMC. Excellent design reliability.

Things to look at is the unibody rot , if you jack up the back end and you can't open the rear doors , there is a problem.

Also… I have daily driven cars for years that only lasted 2 weeks in the hands of another driver. Old cars take a little more care to keep them together, including how they are driven.

Any car is junk if it hasn't been maintained. I have an '08 GP I purchased new. It's 15 years old. It had 230k miles. I changed the oil "every" 3500 miles. I flushed the tranny "every" 50k miles. Both are still running strong. However, I've had to replace about 75% of its major components. Equivalent Hondas and Toyotas haven't had to replace a 1/3 of what I've replaced. I will shop quality, not price next time. I will not invest in a GM product to that degree again.

A faulty MAF sensor will burn up the transmission.

i say its a sensor and maybe a ground or gauge stepper motor issue. i read around and people point this stuff out. they also say to make sure the connectors at both ends the sensor and where it plugs in at the other end close to a computer are connected proper. hopefully this fixes everything
