I have a 1st Gen Focusrite 2i4 and it’s ok but I got an iconnectivityaudio4+ and man, what an improvement. The big thing is that it has a port for iOS device(provides power with no need for a camera kit) and another port for a laptop. I connect a powered hub to a third port to connect my controllers and hardware synths and whatever else. It has a config app to route stuff and boy is it ever powerful. The Iconnectivityaudio4+ is paradise for an iOS musician who wants to also use a laptop and not have to change configurations all the time. I set it up and that’s that. I can also save configurations and load them as needed for fancy stuff. The sound quality and latency is incredible. I still use the Focusrite if I go somewhere and want an interface on hand in my backpack and not have to disconnect the iconnectivity. Isn’t life cool when I can have 2 good interfaces with a bunch of other stuff at a fraction of the cost that it used to be for one interface only.

For those with larger, more complex systems -- my setup includes a 10 core iMac Pro with a second monitor (one for the DAW and one for instruments and plug-ins), an iPad Pro 12.9", a midi controller/stage piano (Kawai),and two hardware synths (Elektron and Dave Smith). Beyond the keyboards, I use two additional midi controllers, a Presonus Faderport 8 and a NI Maschine. For an audio interface I use a Presonus Studio 192 with a lightpipe link to a Digimax DP88 for instrument and microphone audio to my DAW -- the Elektron puts out ten lines of audio. Here's the important part: All my midi IO, as well as iPad midi and audio is handled by an iConnect Midi 4 that connects to my computer over ethernet. It is far and away the best single piece of kit I've bought. It give far better control than Apple's miserable "Audio MIDI Setup" using a single, simply understood software interface. It handles all the MIDI I can throw at it, in both DIN cables and over USB. It also performs audio pass through for the iPad and up to three connected computers.
    Here are the official specs:
4 In & 4 Out Sets of MIDI DIN Connectivity
Supports 8 additional MIDI devices via USB Host Port (with Class-compliant devices connected to a powered hub (Powered USB hub not included)
MultiHost Capability - Connect 3 Computing Devices Directly & More via Network
    Network Connectivity
Supports MAC, PC, & iOS Computing Devices
Integrated MIDI Manager With Snapshot Preset Storage - For MIDI Thru, MIDI Merge, Filtering, and Advanced Routing Control
    USB MIDI Class Compliant
Supports Over 64 Ports of 16 Channels of MIDI I/O Per Port
Plug and Play - No Drivers Needed
    Charge iOS Devices
Audio passThru™ Between Up to 3 Computing Devices
The iConnect Midi 4+ can be had used from Reverb and Ebay for around $200. It is being succeeded by the iConnectAUDIO4+ which adds a full 4-in 5-out audio interface and which can operate in stand alone mode (without computers) that retails for around $350.

Your video was very clear. Unfortunately it didn’t work with my 4i4 focusrite, using a RODE condenser, and IPad Air Gen 3. It would light up but then slowly fade out after about 2 minutes, and pressing the phantom power button did nothing

Great information! 👍🏾 A couple of days ago I plugged my iPad up to my Tascam Model 16 mixer for the first time via the USB power hub and camera connection kit and was shocked that it connected perfectly using the AUM app. I was able to assign each audio source from AUM to whatever channel I wanted it to go to in the Tascam mixer. Can you use the audio interface for your phone calls? Use the xlr mic for your phone calls?
I have seen adapters that let you send line level into iPhone but they are basically just attenuators so you are adding gain from the mic, attenuating into the iPhone so the iPhone can add gain again. This is dumb.

I connected my roland vdrums to irigmidi2 and from there to iphone 8 plus and used garageband. Once all connected garageband did record the midi pulses from the vdrums bat the hihat pulses recorded did have nothing to do from what I played. Kick drum and snare did well, but over all it seems like what I play is not exactly what gets recorded. So my conclusion is that some hardware is not working right. Either garage band on iphone is not capable of good performance or roland module isnt sendind the right pulses or maybe irig isn't as pro as it should be. Any help? I also have a presonus audiobox audio interface, but I dont want to use pc or mac. I would prefer to kepp on with iphone or ipad :)

    • @ElectronisoundsAudio
      @ElectronisoundsAudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Sorry, I don't use Garage Band, so I'm not really much help here.
My question would be - when you are PLAYING the hi-hat, does it SOUND correct, but just not record the midi as played?
If that is the case, then the QUANTIZE RESOLUTION likely is set too low in Garage Band, meaning it's not picking up your 32nd note hat rolls, etc...
Most apps will allow you to set that quantize to a higher resolution (i.e. 32nd notes) or even turn it off.
Also - a V-Drum hi hat is going to be sending MULTIPLE midi notes - closed, open, foot, and all sort of in-between, real-time information.
Midi notes from live-played midi drums in general are going to be ALL ABOUT THE FINESSE, and from my experiences in the past with Roland v-drums,
I personally have never been able to record midi from *any* electronic drums and have it playback EXACTLY as I played it, with all the nuances and subtle timings still intact.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
I would definitely ask your same question on a Roland V-drum forum or FB group to see what other users are doing with iPad.
      GOOD LUCK! 😀 👊

This was clarifying. I've always recorded on my ipad pro just on Garage Band with the touch sensitivity, so synths, and on my mac using my Scarlet 2i2 but only guitars, bass, banjo, flute etc. And I played my Yamaha Reface stand alone.
I didn't know that you plug the audio interface into the USB pack and it communicates from there (🤔 which is baffling in itself because it means that that thing isn't just to charge USB items, it communicates), and also I was wondering about the Midi because I have a Yamaha Reface CP that I want to record with without micing it but my Scarlet 2i2 doesn't have midi inputs in the back, so I was wondering how thats done, and its apparently USB.
You clarified alot, 😂 I was about to buy a whole new damn interface that had the midi inputs.
Now I just gotta figure out how my Boss BR800 can be used as a DAW control surface like they claim (I've used different BRs for years and never knew that 😂) and I'll have a cohesive recordind set up. This also caused me to realize I can just get a 2tb external hard drive and unload alot the other stuff that aint music from my iPad (cuz I'm low on space).
Im a guitar and non synth instrument guy, not a tech guy in the slightest. THANK YOU! Subscribed.

Sorry, Bro - I have no way of knowing exactly what is going wrong in your setup.
I've never heard anyone having problems with the hub shutting off. 🤔
That sounds like a bad connection or a faulty wire somewhere.

If your Hub shuts off, you need a new Hub. 👊

Re: the audio back from the iPad to the audio interface - YES - the audio works *both ways* once you connect the audio interface to the iPad.
it will give you audio *in* and audio *out* from the iPad.
You will connect the interface (or interfaces if you are using two) to a mixer or monitor speakers if you want to hear the sound loud, or just plug in headphones to the audio interface if that is your workflow and you only using one iPad.
By *default* you will need some kind of mixer if you are using audio from more than one device. 👍

You would just need to take the outputs of the audio interface and feed them into your amp with standard audio cables.

If you are trying to get the audio into a DAW on a Mac for example, you can do it with no extra cables using a system called iDAM and plugging your iPad directly into your Mac using the USB cable that came with your iPad (or similar).
It's not quite as easy on a PC...
But to answer your question, YES - if your audio interface is plugged in to the iPad, then the audio will be routed from your sampler app to it's audio outputs. 👍
But if you are trying to record the sampler app into a DAW inside the iPad itself (Cubasis, Beatmaker 3, Etc...), it's likely even easier.
If this answer doesn't help - give me more info and i'll try again! 👊
What is the sampler app? 😁👊

    • @ElectronisoundsAudio

I don't have Logic, but i think you can do it over a system called iDAM.
You plug your iPad into your Mac using a USB cable only, no audio interface required, but there is some setup involved on the mac side.
You have to set the "audio interface" in Logic to receive audio from the iDAM thing or the iPad (i'm not sure exactly how it's labelled in the Mac)...

Hey Hey! Thanks for the kind words! 🤗😁👊
The focusrite solo looks sweet if you don't need more inputs for your workflow - One downside could be not easily being able to connect a stereo synth if you want to record something like that in the future... But *sound quality wise*, it's going to be 100% solid - Focusrite stuff is super quality imho.
You will be able to get good sound quality from the rca out, no problem. 😀 👊

Best video on the topic I've seen so far. I'm a total newb, so just to make sure I understand this... If I got an interface with 2 XLR inputs, would that allow me to record stereo into the iPad? Sorry for the wall of text just have to make some informed purchases lol

    • @ElectronisoundsAudio
      @ElectronisoundsAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Hey Jacob! It really depends on exactly what you want to do. An output from a USB mixer will typically be a summed stereo output. Meaning the MASTER CHANNEL is what comes out form the USB mixer output. If that's what you want to record into the iPad or iPhone, you're golden. If you are looking to record multi-track, you will need an audio interface with multiple inputs (or a specifically *multi-track* USB mixer). You will need as many inputs as you want to record tracks in real-time. If you only need to record 2 mics at any one time, any interface with 2 XLR inputs should get you going. There are so many options for Audio Interfaces, and so many options for mixers - so it depends heavily on *exactly* what your specific needs are for your specific setup. 🤗😁👊

@@MusiCoolPiyush I use the iPad AIR 2 - I have 2 of them. Nothing newer. They sound great if you connect them to an audio interface! You can plug anything you want into the interface -- guitar, mics, synths, etc. WOOT! 😀 👊

Hey Dean awesome videos and tutorials,I was wanting to get the Tascam 20X20 to be my new interface with iPad,it seems identical as your Tascam, can you tell me if the "line out stereo pair"on back of unit is the sum of all inputs?,and is it for feeding an amp?

      Thanks for watching! 🤗😁👊
The Tascam 16x08 that I am using sometimes, actually has 4 pairs of stereo outputs 😵 🤯, and you can assign how the signal flow works to the outputs with the included software on a PC, not sure about doing that on a Mac or an iPad - I think you would mostly assign that routing *internally* from within the iPad app itself if the app is capable.
iPad apps like AUM, Cubasis and Beatmaker 3 should be able to do this from inside the app. In fact, YES - I just connected up, loaded and double checked with *all three* of these apps, and YES - you can assign any tracks in these apps to *any* of the Tascam's inputs *or* outputs! WOW! 😃 👊
(I had only actually only ever used the "master out" set of outputs on this before...)
You could run any of the line out(s) into an amp, into a mixer, into a set of powered studio monitor speakers, etc... 👍👍
