    Fluke 83 Multimeter tutorial on How To disassemble and re-assemble. A closer look at the display, and the elastomeric connectors that cause faded missing segments.
    A quick way to fix a faded display with missing segments is to clean the elastomeric connectors that connect to the LCD. This is a temporary fix. Simply use rubbing alcohol and cotton swab to clean the top and bottom edges of the elastomers. Re-insert them, and your meter should be good to go for a little while. Your display will have the same problem again if it is cleaned. The reason is because the old style pink elastomers lose their bounce and are not providing good connection from the LCD to the Main PCB. We recommend replacing the elastomers.
    Important note: Older Fluke Multimeter plastic may become brittle over time. Always use best practices and care when attempting to pry certain parts. Many parts are no longer available, but can be swapped out from parts units.

    My Fluke 87s have that issue with the digits missing on display. I cleaned the elastomeric connector and it appeared better on one. I then wedged a piece of cardboard between the display bezel and glass and now it is normal. However, I hear a faint whistling sound even when the meter is turned off. What do you think that could be? I ordered three replacement electrolytic caps, hoping it is that. I also ordered new elastomeric pads, hoping to get the other one to display properly.

      Check to make sure that the additional cardboard isn't causing other components to press into each other. I've not had this problem before. Sorry for the late reply, but make sure it's not the cardboard inserts before replacing the parts. Could be the caps, but please let us know what you find out.

      @@MultimeterParts It was nice that Fluke had a parts list available. Although the original caps were obsolete, I ordered similar 47 uF tantalum caps.. They appeared to have done the job. Both meters no longer make the noise, like a faint whistling sound tapering off into something that sounded like a faint and slow Geiger counter. Also, I installed the new gray elastomeric connectors in them .. Both seem to be working and displaying correctly without the use of shims. I suspected the caps because the noise was coming from the region where they were.

      @@MultimeterParts I forgot to add that the noise was present both with and without the shims. It was apparent on both meters when first turning them on. They've been sitting in my basement for over 20 years (basement is at 50% humidity).

    Hey man, I have a fluke 789 with resistance issues. Without any leads in the meter, it reads 5 megaohm bouncing around, and when I touch the leads together, it goes to -2.5 ohms. Do you have any idea what causes that? Or where I could find that out

      I've seen this before in an older Fluke 87. The cause was 1M resistor that was fried. Usually, unstable and inaccurate readings will be caused by faulty components. Problem is that the 789 has less PCB circuitry, and it might all be surface mount (smaller components and hard to replace). You'll have to open it up and see if any moisture has gotten in and caused any rusting. I'll try to post a video of a 789 breakdown if I have one. In the mean time, here's a link to the Service manual: assets.fluke.com/manuals/789_____cmeng0000.pdf Thanks for reaching out and I hope this helps.

      @Test Meter thanks for your reply. I will try this, now that you mention it I think i did see a little corrosion there when I had it open. Is there a electronics place you would recommend ? I want to buy something closest to the original

    What are the adjustments for?

    • @MultimeterParts
      @MultimeterParts  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The adjustments inside the Flukes, and all test equipment is for adjusting the meters if they are out of MFG. Specifications. Each pot resistor controls a different range, and they are adjusted by accredited calibration labs to bring them back to within specifications.

    Your video is terrible furing diassemble and assemblely missing the where you lifted the meter above the camera view
