Man these are the best diy renovation videos I’ve found! I just bought a house built in ‘58 that hasn’t been updated since the 70s, so I’m definitely gonna be going through your whole catalogue over the next few months
Hey man you’ve helped me more then any of the other cats. I changed a subfloor board, hung doors, and repaired a door all because of your realistic videos. I would have done better on a floor if I had of followed what you said instead of going out on my own. I hope you haven’t stoped videos, they really help.
Heyhey Thomas. That’s awesome to hear my friend. Check out the new ecourse and digital guide. Home mender in your pocket! And thanks so much for sharing.
I bought this paneling the other day for this 134 y/o toilet to make it look like back in the day. After seeing this vid i can see my results before the work. Thanks great vid.
I really enjoyed this video. You explained this procedure in a relaxed and friendly manner. Also, you included all of the necessary tips along the way. Thank you!😊
Dude , you’re pretty much redoing my entire house. Doing this to my bathroom this weekend. I actually got lucky bc I only have tile on the wall opposite all fixtures
Awesome Theresa. Thank you so much for commenting! Cutting in the grass means you don’t have to set up sawhorses, I just sent you saw blade depth and you got it
I’m looking at a home and it’s beautiful! It was built in 1910 but I absolutely hate tile. It has to go. Thank you for this! I agree we need to completely eliminate the tile wall 😂
Omg I'm so glad I found your video. I was recommended to do tile but I was torn between tile and bead board or whatever you call it. Watching your video, the tile just give that cold feeling or industrial like bathroom where this one give out that cozy, elegant and feels like home and not to mention a lot better looking. I know what I need to do now, thank you so much!!
I actually replaced cheap beadboard wainscoting that was glued on the walls and replaced with beautiful tile work. Ripped out cheap plastic shower insert and tiled tub surround.
My first, big DIY project in the 1927 Craftsman we just bought... ripping out old, 50s, pink tile and replacing with beadboard wainscoting. Wish me luck!
You made me feel like this was easy 😂😂😂😂😂😂 It was so hard for me, but thank you for the very informative video. I got some of it done today. Will finish tomorrow.
Hey Danielle if it’s any consolation mine took two days as well :-) well if I told you it was hard you might not of attempted it, but now your tile halfway up the wall will be gone! You rock
The first way you cut 2 pieces of chair rail to join them at a corner, that seems odd (15:15 - 16:50). You cut the left piece straight, then you used a coping saw for the right piece. Then for the next corner, you just cut both of them at a 45 degree angle (16:45). You made it sound like coping would give a cleaner end result. Why would coping look better? Nice trick pre-filling it with caulk! Thanks for the video.
Hey Patrick yes sir thank you so much for sharing. I wanted to show the two different ways to create the corner. Coping it helps one piece layover the other and just provides a cleaner more professional look, plus it makes up some of the space in case you don’t have an exact 90 Degree corner. Thank you so much for commenting
Can getting rid of the wall tiles actually be a bad idea in bathrooms that don't have windows, because of the moisture buildup? Are there any special precautions or extra steps you would do when installing wainscotting in a windowless bathroom, vs. one with windows? (Yes, windowless bathrooms with showers do exist. They usually have an exhaust fan to pull out the moisture from showers, so you don't have a problem with mold.)
Hey Melissa typically every bathroom is required to have either a window or an exhaust vent to the outside, the fancier ones do a better job but no there should be no issues replacing the tile, as long as you have your fan and it’s doing the job you are good to go. Great question
@@homemend Thanks. My house was built in 1964 and never been updated since. I have a weird bathroom right in the middle of the house that has no window. It does have an exhaust fan, which comes on automatically whenever the light is on, but I don't think it works very well. I heard that you can test if an exhaust fan is working by seeing if you can get a piece of toilet paper to stick to it. It doesn't stick. I want to do something about the wall tiles, but I have to be careful about moisture and potential mold buildup because it gets very steamy from the shower because of the ventilation situation. I'm wondering if there's some kind of wainscotting I can just put on top of the tiles, without having to remove them, but like I said, I have to be sure that mold can't grow behind it.
Hey Melissa definitely invest in a decent fan putting a good fan in there sounds like it will take care of any concerns you may have with moisture. Make sure your ductwork has been cleaned out in the last year or two and get air flowing through there. You got this
@@homemend Have you heard of the toilet paper test for exhaust fans? Just because you can't get toilet paper to stick to it for more than a second or two, is that really a reliable enough sign that it's not working properly? Or does that not mean anything?
I need to remove wall title on a home I bought in the mountains. I am from a beach town where we use Wayne’s coating. What do people like in the mountain areas?
In the video description, the Makita Cordless Drill link doesn't seem to work (for me anyways). Thought you might want to know. Thanks for the informative video!
This video is excellent. My only question, my bathroom is demo'd and looks exactly like this one in the video. Can you provide a link to the 4x8 Wainscoting paneling you used? I just want to make sure whatever I put on my wall will take paint and handle the moisture.
Hey Matthieu as long as you get a good coat of paint on it you should be good to go. Here’s the panel that I used in the video. 3/16 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. White MDF Truebead Wainscot Panel. Currently 28 bucks a panel
My bathroom is built in the 50's. It has that thick chicken wire mesh stuff under the tile. We removed it in master bath and it was pure h3ll! Can I just cover the tile in our hallway bath with the wainscoting? I dont want to paint it just want to cover it. Also, how do you suggest the best way to cover that it will last a long time?
Hi Melissa yes it’s definitely a lot of work but totally worth it. You could cover over it but you would have to use adhesive to secure it to the tile. It might get messy. I hope this helps
Do you need to allow a small gap in the corners for the wood to expand? Also, is it best to do this after installing baseboard or should I install baseboard over this like you did? For the same reason, expanding panels. Background: I am putting paneling up in my daughter's closet on the back wall and two side walls.
I am doing the same project - removing tile halfway up my bathroom wall and installing Wainscoting. Did the MDF board hold up in a bathroom? Im afraid to use MDF because of the moisture and water. Im opting to go with bead board wood siding panels instead. Thanks for the video!
Hey Troy this one held up well of course it was a half bath. I’m guessing it depends on how hot you like those showers my friend. The wood is gorgeous but a little more expensive. And after painting either one with semi gloss paint it’s pretty protected.
hey daniel! the best bet for that would be to cut the wall out from the tile down..its just too damaged after removing tile to save it imo...i hope this helps!
Should you be concerned about asbestos when you do this? Is it in old tile glue, since it looks very similar to black mastic, which was the glue that was used on floor tiles up until the 70's, which had asbestos in it.
Hey Melissa we just kind of roll with it, if it’s dusty and hard to breathe throw on a mask, if it’s known to be made as asbestos such as the glue or the 8 x 8 old-school kitchen tile or the pipe wrap stay away from it otherwise we roll on. I hope this helps
Hey Robin. You probably can but I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m guessing moisture issues may be a problem but and a half bath we’re really just trying to make it look pretty. It seems something crazy enough that I would try LOL
If it's relatively flat you can go over, remove the first row of tiles put a thin piece of wood to shim, put a shim above the last row of tile, nail to the top and bottom shim into the studs, glue the middle of the board using a good adhesive, PL premium polyurethane adhesive should hold the panel really tight even against ceramic tile. Moisture won't be an issue, I bought my house and the previous owner had a contractor redo one of the baths and this is how it was done, it's been up for probably 7 or 8 years and there is no sign of any problem. If you want to rip the tile out use a pry bar and a big hammer to "pop" the tiles or even better a rotary hammer. If it's really old the wall behind the tile is concrete, ripping it down is not really a good option because you won't really be able to nail into it anyway.
When I pulled my ceramic tile down, almost all of the adhesive stayed stuck on the wall. I tried to use different techniques to remove the adhesive from the wall, but am having little success with these methods. I probably only have 10% of the adhesive off and I have been working on it for hours. Can I just skim coat over the adhesive and let it dry before I put my wainscotting up?
hey my baby...you cant mess it up....any ugly gets covered over with pretty..you can "reglaze" the tile but it is still tile there and quite pricey....ive seen new paint for tile products but have never used them...you can do it...the confidence is the hard part!
A couple of questions if you don't mind? My bathroom is from 1926, will the tile adhesive be the same? It's not on drywall. Why didn't you use the multitool to remove the tile? Also, can you put drywall over tile and save the tile demo work?
hey paul...you could go over tile but its not recommended. just as a class thing..people will know..lol i did classic hammer and scraper, prybar, chisel or whatever you have to remove it...the multi tool would dull very quickly....1926..it should be just as tough this one..you got this!
Couldn't disagree more, I would love to have tile halfway up the wall! I foster animals and they are quite destructive. Tile would be so much easier to clean and a cat or dog would have a much more difficult time chewing through or tearing up tile. A modern tile would like much nicer and hold up better for our life style - maybe an old style from 50 years ago needs to be renovated but there are nicer options now.

Absolutely my friend
We might use T-11 Wood siding in the mountains. At least that has been my plan. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it.
love it kathy!.. t 111 would rock...very nice
looks great, thanks for the directions. I plan on using a finishing nailing.
yes..thank you j!
I used a fat trim removal tool and a heavier hammer... it did well. your plumbing holes aren't bad, my dad would have multiple oblong holes.
Excellent dave! And thank you so much my friend I’m sure I’ve cut Many of my own oblong holes 🥳
I’m actually trying to get rid of that hideous same EXACT wainscoting! Lol
Lol. Something else is always something better LOL

So very jealous. My tile came off with everything but the studs stuck to it. I had no option but to replace the rock.
That is hard-core

thank you lori....you too...
