      This was painful to watch. You don’t use mdf for baseboard. Is to porus it swells when wet. You’ll sell as soon as you take a mop to that floor. Second.. stop spackeling edges on mdf. Use bullseye shellac base primer . Scuff smooth when dry . Done . Third . Pocket screw your stiles and rails in one assembly. It will ensure perfect joints that won’t separate. And lastly you should always lay out wanescott with a vertical stile at the ends of each wall . It’s traditionally how it’s done .looks funny otherwise. Also latex primer on mdf is a no no . The water raises the fiber and leaves you with a lumpy finish .

    Just FYI, we don’t do “project cuts” at Home Depot. Our saw is basically to help customers that don’t have a large vehicle, get their plywood home. We are told to refuse anything more than that. Don’t expect to go there and have them “cut all your trim pieces” out of a sheet of plywood. Rent a saw and do it in the parking lot if u feel the need. I’m just sayin…. 🤷‍♂️👍

    Alright this is looking great at the end but...3 things...1 use primer mold resistant sealer (or a stain blocker if you're not worried about mold) on your baseboards and you don't need to do this mudding process at all. There is a reason why they sell primed MDF baseboards and trims at stores. 2 instead of but joint and pocket holes you should have done 45° miters on both pieces so the one goes behind the other and the joint is seamless. Simple finishing tips and tricks. 3 wouldn't be easier and more accurate to just measure 36" - the witch of your baseboard from the top of your baseboard to get this as level as possible?

    Good video. I am a 3rd generation carpenter and have done many different styles and lay-outs for wanescoting. I just wanted to give a few tips.
    1 - just use 1x4 or 1x5 (actual sizes in canada are 11/16" x 3.5"/4.5") material over sheet goods (it costs less and comes pre-primed and you don't have to rip anything and that joint at 8 ft. won't occur because they come 16ft. long)
    2 - The best way to do this style is to buy a 4' x 16' x 3/4" sheet and cut-out the squares so there are no joints to crack over time. this style will eventually crack so filling the vertical will only work for a few years unless you join them (ie. biscuits or other way). You could use a 1/8 roundover bit on the cross-cut ends (like concrete curbs) to make it look like you planned for the eventual cracking that is almost guaranteed to occur.

    Next time you have a contrasting wall color,
    Run a bread of caulk along the corner for a super straight cut in line.
    Being that this is your first time why is this a
    "HOW TO" instead of a "HOW I" video.
    Your "patch board" should have a 45 degree cut also with the overlap facing away from the most viewed area.
    THERE IS NO "X" IN ESPECIALLY!
    FYI: fingerboard trim... after several years the glue releases and the wood starts coming apart.

    Nice idea on ganging them up to seal the edges. I think I'd probably have cut all the verticals the same and installed them first and then pushed the top rail down to meet them, but I can see how that could be a problem if the floor is uneven, then your top rail would follow that unevenness and be wavy. The longer it is the worse that problem would be. I've also seen people cut the entire thing out of one sheet (removing the rectangle areas, essentially, so there are no seems at all) you can get 10 foot long MDF so this can work in a small room.

    You should NEVER EVER EVER use MDF for the baseboards. The slightest bit of moisture and they swell and are ruined. You’re using this in a laundry room, and the harsh reality of that is that at some point in its life, this room will probably see flooding from a leaking washer, or pet damage. ALWAYS use real wood or plywood for base mounding. Always.

    You say you didn't glue the boards, but you pretty much did when you caulked them. That caulk will hold them on better than the nails, so I can't see a need for glue on the back of them as well. I would have used the caulking on all joints and gaps, rather than the spackle on the few you did. Laundry rooms see big temperature and moisture swings so I'm a little worried the spackle joints will crack over time.

    • @ilikewater666
      @ilikewater666 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@villagecarpenter2266 The origin does not determine pronunciation in etymology. "Wain" has a long a, but "wall" has a short a sound. They are different. Why should anyone assuming that "coting" uses the same long o sound as "coating"? They are spelled differently and the first part of the word is pronounced differently. Both are accepted pronunciations and often region and dialect specific. Just like the word Tomato. Again, knowing the origin does not determine pronunciation.

    Your note about puttying the edges of MDF is invaluable! Thank you!

      One question - how did you decide how wide to place the verticals? Usually, I see a board at each end - yours doesn't have that. Are their guidelines for these decisions?

      Ok, another question. What paint did you use? Something washable? Thank you!

    Why wouldn’t you do the floor first if you said it’s gotta go? Looks like you’ll be pull that Quarter round off. Hopefully you don’t mess up the wainscoting.

    Where can I buy the clamp you used to hold the wood in place while working buy yourself? You called it a spanning clamp but can't find it under that term.

    This look awesome, I am a newbie, I will tackle a project like this. What is the make and model of cordless nail gun, you are using?

  • @chrissmith-kd3vk
    @chrissmith-kd3vk ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't understand why so many people use that quarter round to help hide the gap on baseboard. The real trick is to scribe the bottom of it, run the bottom through a table saw at a 45 not removing any width to the trim (just to remove the material you wont see) and then sand down the material to your scribe line. That way you arent trying to sand down the whole bottom and only that 45 angle point at the bottom.

    MDF baseboard in a laundry room??? Oh no. That's going to have a very interesting spongey texture after it gets water on it a few times

  • @ericsodt

    Did you use the same dimensions for the corners? One corner looks larger than the other in the pics from your tutorial? I was always taught to rip down or pad one stile when doing corners for a uniform look, I didn't see you address this in your video nor tutorial. Can you explain?

  • @garyolsen3409
    @garyolsen3409 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really do need a 12" miter saw for tall trim, it's too difficult to turn it over because there's always too many 45 degree cuts in new construction.

    Did your wall have texture? I want to do that but the wall has the texture and think it might look weird. I watched a video where the guy floated the whole wall to get rid of texture but that seems like a lot. Thanks!

    Why do the trim before the flooring? Wont you have to pull the trim again when you do the flooring to make sure you get it all and that it fits well?

    really?, you're going to replace the flooring after this? LOL, I think you'll look back and wish you'd done the floor first. I'm just saying. That said, you have the two most important characteristics of any kind of woodworker, builder and or average person (in my opinion) that being patience and determination.. with these two characteristics you can accomplish almost anything in life. keep up the quality videos, and don't forget to enjoy life with your family (without them life is pointless). thumbs up & subscribed.
