    Shift stop; coil overs; front and rear braces; tune (MAP stage 1 93 oct); 19” wheels; nameless axle-back = 320 at the crank, 295 torque at the crank, nice sound, flat handling - all good.

  • @wrigman
    @wrigman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would include the Cuzco front shock tower brace on that one. Also the rear power brace made a huge difference in aggressive driving on my 2014 Crosstrek. I plan these two mods for my 2017 WRX. All the others you mention make PERFECT sense. The oil change valve has made such a HUGE difference on all my other cars, that I cannot imagine not having one on this car..... good job on the video!!!

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! I have both the cusco braces but they honestly made next to no difference on my car... maybe the WRX is already very rigid compared to the crosstrek.

    • @wrigman
      @wrigman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steemax I noticed it very little in day to day driving, but pushing it hard in mountain twisties, the car cornered much flatter. But I have noticed that the WRX I traded the Crosstrek for is much stiffer. Based on my experience with the Crosstrek, I thought I would do the same with the WRX...

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm.. I'm planning on a autocross event very soon, maybe i will notice it then. Or since they were practically the first thing i've done to the car before break in finished that's probably why I can't tell much of a difference since i never drove the car hard without them to begin with.

    Nice tips. I'm thinking to buy a wrx soon. Yours looks really good. The Avid-1 AV20's in 18x9.5 wheels, you are using 245 on it? 255 will rub for sure.

    I know this is been posted a few yrs now but. I agree with the first two. Third one I would do is add Cobb access port. I'm almost 100% sure your improvement after 4k rpm is from the tune. My first performance mod is the access port mainly to fix that stupid delay from stop and it also gave me a real good boost. No more dead flat after 4k rpm. It's a little more linear in pulls. I've also always wanted those tail lights, but I can't justify the cost 😉

    Top 5 for the Outback
    1. Full tank of gas

    4. Tear drop camper
    5. Open road

    I have a catted turbo xs j pipe grimmspeed intake tgv deletes and nameless muffler delete and its all top end now. Doing a protune soon. If you have a more open exhaust it wouldnt have needed the top mount for the top end power but its really helpfull with getting more air and keeping it cold while boosting

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes sense... the top mount was my way for more top end since i opted out of the TGV's... I am very happy with my current setup though, couldn't ask for anything more.

    Hey bro I recently just bought myself a 2017 wrx premium and I absolutely love it! It's just I don't know where to start modify it, so I brought myself to here and I love this video +1 subscriber. Do you have any more tips ideas what to do to my car that recommend other these 5?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ramon! Thanks for the comment, if I were to recommend other mods besides these I'd have to say RCE yellow or black springs for an all around sportier daily driver and if you do plan to tune your car I highly recommend getting a grimmspeed 3 port electronic boost control solenoid which will make it a lot easier to tune and it will keep your car from surging and over boosting which could lead to damage to the motor

    • @eloneatmyshorts
      @eloneatmyshorts 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steemax I'll comment more on your vid re: 5 reasons... (which btw, you are spot on) but I returned to a hatch and purchased a 2016 Golf R. Mainly due to two things in my city: 1) the current WRX gen is getting so popular that I got tired making it stand out in a sea of WRXs and 2) I never got that Subaru sense of community (and believe me, this city is is full of Subs) that I had with VW. I'll expand elsewhere but I'm enjoying the anonymity and the exclusivity of driving a VW hatch. Americans indeed don't like hatches as evident in my city lol.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +BodegaBay thanks man.... And I totally understand, it's the complete opposite here, you rarely see another WRX so when you do you know it's an enthusiast. The new R's are fantastic cars, it was indeed my first choice when shopping but at the time dealers wanted upwards of $7000 in markups lol. Anyway I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new R!

    hello bro nice car man, got a wrx myself and love these cars I also got that perrin shift stop and it does make a difference in how the shifter feels, I have to point out though that the plastic shift stop on the right by the 5th and 6th gear is to stop you from shifting the car into reverse but yes it does act in a similar way like the perrin shift stop does but was really meant as a safety features, great video and keep up the good work🖒

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video man. I was wondering, how are your tein coil overs doing? Would you recommend them for street & occasional spirited driving?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fox Stowe they're doing great man, they handle really well and are adjustable enough to make them very comfortable for the street or very aggressive although I recommend them for the street only with light track (auto cross) they aren't meant to handle full track duty mostly because they aren't rebuild able so you'd have to replace the whole assembly quite frequently

  • @joegallagher4528
    @joegallagher4528 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video. In reference to the intercooler, that shouldn't affect the top revs dramatically. My guess would be the new map allowed you to draw more power in the higher rpms. There are a few tuners that make maps which turn stock cars into what they should have been from the factory - cars with power throughout the rpm gauge, not just low end. Great looking car, by the way.

    • @Steemax

    does realy the shift stick that hard or heavy? as what i can see your putting too much force while you change gear lol just shift it normally or gently.. 😜

    • @cody6647
      @cody6647 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a 2016 WRX and yes, it really is clunky/notchy. When full throttle, going from 1st to 2nd/2nd to 3rd is anything but gentle.

    • @bandito_burrito1819
      @bandito_burrito1819 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Double clutching and rev matching are paramount to smooth shifting. I thought my tranny was shot or something but after learning the "sweet spot" of the gears you can't even feel it shift.

  • @bttawfiq
    @bttawfiq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Prior to the bigger intercooler the power used to drop after 5000rpms?
    I believe the PCM was pulling timing to protect the engine, but with cooler intake air the engine can run on higher timing.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That might be true actually, the stock tune is known to not be the most optimized thing out there.

  • @williambittner5874
    @williambittner5874 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    look at a stock dyno to a Cobb stage 1 with no mods and you will fix the 4k+ pull issue. The boost is purposely cut by factory tune 4k on so the car remains slower than the STI. That said I still agree TMI upgrade is key.
    I wish you could show some data from pre and post intercooler intake manifold Temps

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi William, you're right pretty much any tune will get rid of the 4k pull issue, it's just the TMIC + protune was the biggest difference for me in that aspect. As for the data, I wish I had taken some logs before I put on my IC.

    • @williambittner5874
      @williambittner5874 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steemax go to gauges on your Cobb intake temp and intake manifold Temps and do some WOT runs and post before and after I'll do same on stock

    Sweet Informative vlog bro... digging all 6 mods.
    Im rolling a premium cvt model '16. Its been a good change from my old 5-spd man. especially for our highways!
    I live in phx, & one of my 1st out of 3, performance mod goals will be a better top mt intercooler/
    2nd - programer/ CAI. My hp goals are set for under 300hp because I think for this platform it is a perfect balance for all around performance & reliability! The sweet spot imo lol...

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man, I appreciate the compliment.... and I gotta say you'd be doing exactly what I would do if I were in that Phoenix heat. That TMIC will make sure you don't get robbed of any power over there. And as for the power goals that's about where I'm at with 302whp and 325wtq... I couldn't ask for more nor do I find my self wanting more. It's more than I could personally use in spirited driving through the twisties for sure. Enjoy the ride man.

    • @88ksalcedo
      @88ksalcedo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just curious why top mount for your cvt instead of the front mount? I was gon get the front mount mishimoto one for my cvt but if u suggest too mount would be better id go for it just wanna kno why.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kris salcedo hey Kris, at this moment the best aftermarketTMIC's are plenty for a car making anywhere up to 400hp. That being said I feel it would be a waste to have a heavy large IC designed for big power on a CVT only because a lot of the vendors developing parts at the moment have found the CVT starts to experience issues at the 300+hp mark. Of course your mileage may vary

    • @greym6436
      @greym6436 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +kris salcedo I will continue to run a top mount (Upgraded that is) because I don't plan on going stage 2 or 3. My HP goals (300hp) are at what I think is the sweet spot for this platform. IMO "Because Rally Car"!

    • @88ksalcedo
      @88ksalcedo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea same here! i heard its risky going above stage one in a cvt. they shouldve just made the wrx a DCT! lol

  • @BrassStacks
    @BrassStacks 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good list.
    If I can pull off getting a WRX this summer I have to go with CVT, which means I won't be adding any power, so I was planning on getting a front mounted intercooler and putting a tyranny cooler on top.
    Anything else I do will be purely for handling, reliability, safety and cosmetics. I've done enough damage to my license over the decades so I don't need to build another rocketship. I just want to have fun in the mountains and the snow sometimes and not be bored to death driving around town.
    I was thinking about white but you got me thinking about this blue again. It was my initial pick but something about the white with all black accents keeps tugging at me.
    i look forward to seeing what else you do. It would be cool to see some good driving vids too

    Dang 303/325 on 91? I'm on 93 with full tbe, gs intake w/box, gs ebcs, and PRL chargepipe and from my virtual dyno'd I'm now where near those numbers haha how aggressive is your tune?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha honestly before I was pro tuned, I had Brens e-tune. The only thing I changed was I added the TMIC and got Protuned. I also did a virtual dyno of my Protune and it was only off by 2 to 3 digits from the real dyno. As for how aggressive it is, it's really nothing crazy... Car peaks 20psi and holds 18 to 19. No knock anywhere. Paul at Yimispory is a genius lol, he tunes professional race cars

    • @LeftenantMalachi
      @LeftenantMalachi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. I'm a potential WRX owner, and was wondering if you thought the SBT (rebranded STI) performance exhaust packet you can get on the car is comparable to the Invidia one you have. The Inividia would be cheaper, looks much better IMO (blue tips!), but am not sure how it compares to the STI performance exhaust. I want something deeper, very mellow, that is louder than stock. I know this is just a sound mod, so performance is a moot point with just a catback. My intention is to go Stage 1 with a AP and catback, as this would be a daily driver.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leftenant Malachi i honestly dislike the SPT. It doesn't look half as good as the Invidia like you mentioned and it is quite notorious for having drone unlike the q300 which has none in my experience. I'd say it's not worth it.

    • @LeftenantMalachi
      @LeftenantMalachi 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate it. Looks like if I get one I'll get the Invidia. In your opinion, are ANY of the STI performance mods worth getting from the factory?, or should I opt out of all of it (to save $$), and add the Invidia and an aftermarket short throw shifter?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Leftenant Malachi I actually have the STI STS and I think it's great. I tried adding the kartboy short shift plate and it was too much, the STI one is great. Other than that I'd stay away from the rest.

      Steemax No Problem. I really like the WRX STI but for practical reasons I may have to settle for a Q50. My girlfriend hates sports cars. The way you have your car looking is the way I would set it up. I want a sports car that can look a little like a luxury sedan and it can be done with the new WRX STI.

    Question for the oil drain valve. what about the washer? You don't have to change that washer if you have the quick drain valve?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No it comes with its own oring/washer that is a one time install. All you do is drain your oil close the valve, replace the filter and fill new oil

    • @JS-bn4hp
      @JS-bn4hp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +홍종석 hmm that's surprising I've never heard that before, but yeah I've never changed mine nor do I see a reason too. Glad I can help :)

    • @JS-bn4hp
      @JS-bn4hp 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've should of been more clear. I meant the OEM crush washer with the OEM drain plug. When I went to the dealer to buy the filter they said the OEM crush washer needs to be replaced time to time. This quick valve is so much more convenient.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +홍종석 oh yeah that's a different story. The OEM crush washer needs to be replaced. It's a one time use. The plug literally crushes the washer into place thus it's name "crush washer" so if you have a crush washer crushed one way and put a different plug it may not seal correctly

    Can you talk about differences with modding a manual and an automatic in a video I'm curious

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can make a video about tuning and touch on the differences of modding each one, otherwise it's not much as far as differences go for a video. If you'd like you can PM me and I can give you a run down on any questions you have

  • @salutegod2821
    @salutegod2821 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    how about the access port would you recommend getting that first then a FMIC , intake, exhasut, and tune ?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Damian, I would only recommend you do any of the upgrades you listed after getting the accessport.... Using those parts without a tune would be a huge risk of something going wrong in these cars. Only reason I didn't include the AP is because it's one of those things the majority will end up having to get anyway.

    • @salutegod2821
      @salutegod2821 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the help man i was really confused on that one more question if you dont mind would i be able to run a TMIC with a FMIC at the same time or is there anything wrong with that ?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Damian Marine Hi Damian, you could technically run both at the same time but it would be unheard of to do so. There would be no benefit and it would just be added weight to the car. I'd stick to either one good TMIC or FMIC. In my opinion a really good TMIC is more than enough for stage 2 power levels

      Yes most any performance/suspension oriented modification could possibly void your warranty if found to be the fault of an issue.

    • @SubieCaleb
      @SubieCaleb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steemax is right, but on a side note, you can't actually VOID the warranty. SOA CAN however deny all of your claims in relation to that system if they think it was the cause of it.

    What's the 1st coulpe mods to do to start modding and getting more power

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will have to start off with a Cobb accessport or some sort of tuner. I recommend the Cobb for ease of use. Now with the ability to tune the car the most bang to the buck mod out there for power is a j-pipe. If you don't want to venture off that far yet, you can start off with an intake and the tune and see how you like it

Nothing wrong with your Q50 choice, get the 400+Hp (red) version lol. one more thing, you may already know is the STI comes without the big arse wing which makes it look like some boy-racer car. I have a 2017 WRX LTD.

      All the Imprezas up to the GE chassis, possibly the GJ chassis as well, were designed for competition. The GC ,GD and the GE chassis had to comply with FIA WRC class rules which mandates that 10 competition evolution cars come from a minimum of 25,000 production cars for homologation. Petter Solberg helped with the design of the GE hatchback.
      These cars a not a regular, run of the mill "family" cars. Far from it. Put this car on a lift and you can see that it's purposefully over engineered making these cars, especially the STi variant, almost bulletproof. Subaru is one of two car manufacturers, the other being Mitsubushi, that brings a TRUE AWD rally machine to the hands of car enthusiast.

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did for the first 3 but this coming up one is every 4K which will be my regular... I buy my filters and oil in bulk so my theory is if I could afford to do them even more frequently then I mind aswell, to me it's the cheapest form of insurance. But you're definitely right... In 99% of cases it's unnecessary

      all meant in good faith, but to do a video log, you don't have to have the camera pointed at you all the time, just saying...and the 50% transparent overlays were difficult to get a good idea of what the product was doing and or what it looked like in/on the car...recommend doing full screen inserts when talking about a specific product...also, would the A/C have been so loud, even on setting #1, to have interfered with the audio?

    • @Steemax
      @Steemax  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha no worries man, I didn't take it that way. But good tips, any criticism is welcome so I can better my videos of course. Also I wasn't sure about the A/C as the camera was literally infront of the vent because I don't have a suction cup mount for it yet so it was just on a tripod on the floor. Did not want to risk running the A/C then go inside to find the audio was ruined lol.
