The thing with Balan Wonderworld is that it's a one-button game - everything is done with the left stick and a single button. Painfully oversimplified.
@@christinarawlings948 That's why 3D Sonic was riddled with issues. It's this one button mentality, while every other platformer, even at that time, used more than just one button to do stuff like attacking, jumping etc., which also results in less simplistic/boring level design due to the expanded moveset (a.k.a you can do more tricks with the character you're playing with while using said tricks and whatelse not). 3D Sonic is just too simplified in terms of control scheme and it's probably the main reason it struggled throughout the decades.
@@dinohermann1887 Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 both used multiple buttons. Triggers to shift the camera, X for spin dash/interact and A for jump. I'm using Dreamcast controls since that's how I play Adventure games.
@@arieson7715 Huh, I thought that every game directed/produced by Yuji Naka had the same one-button control scheme as his "recent" game Balan Wonderworld. But why then does Balan use a one-button control scheme despite the two Sonic Adventure titles not using it too, even though they were directed/produced by Naka?
I think you kinda underexaggerated the biggest problem of sonic 06: The game wasn't finished. No literally, it wasn't finished. Sega rushed it out the door and refused to delay it and eventually realized it couldn't run on the wii, so they took half the staff of 06 and moved them to a different game. @@nobodyinparticular9640 It would be fair to give it an award for longest waste of time and money in game development if it never does. The amount of cash they've probably burnt so far on it is astronomical.
A perfect representation of how much effort was put into Big Rigs is that bridge you "cross" along the driving route. You just clip through, down into and across the ravine and then back up onto the road on the other side again. They couldn't even be bothered to add collision to the one object that the player is directed to travel across.
It also should be noted that this was made when games where still only released in physical boxes. So when you look at the box on the shelf in a store, just based on the package, it would actually look like a legit game if you didn't know any better.
It’s too bad they couldn’t find some way to use sound vibrations. The fully deaf can feel (mostly low) sound frequencies through things such as touching a speaker playing music.
16:02 I didn't know that they're was controversy surrounding the Sonic R soundtrack! Nowadays everyone seems to love it, so the fact that there were people who genuinely found it annoying is super surprising to me. Especially since the soundtracks seem to be the one consistently good thing about the Sonic franchise. The more you know, I guess!
Keep in mind the last real Sonic game was Sonic 3 and it was pretty early in the 32bits era I can see why people would find the ost really odd (not to mention not everyone might like the style, the music is a bit "cheesy" even if I love it too)
my dad bought me ninjabread man for the wii and when he saw how it looked, he never bought me a game without asking me again. I haven't heard about this game in years so it's neat to see it here
2011 was such a wild year. So many games that were hyped to hell. Skyrim, Dark Souls, Portal 2, Dead Island. And of course, Duke Nukem Forever. I remember taking the day off of school and going downtown to get it. I think i played for about 4 hours and haven't touched it since lol.
For an iceberg of the worst games of all time, there is quite a few games that are considered average. You’d expect all of these entries to be universally panned, especially on the lower tiers
The levels have to do with the rarity and lack of exposure of the games rather than popular concensus. I actually think some of the games of the lower tiers aren't as bad as those at the very top. I played Superman64 as a kid back in the day, rented it from the local video store for the weekend. Those where the worst $5 bucks I've ever spent, I gave up the same night I rented it, and felt so horribly cheated. When even a fucking kid can say your game is garbage, _it is absolute garbage._ I'm so glad I didn't gave up on that store, because just the next weekend, they were selling some of them, and I bought what ranks as one of my top 5 vidya I ever had, _Mischief Makers._ And to think the guy running the joint sold it for just 10 bucks to me because "he didn't get it", kek. But seriously, fuck Superman64, and also that Power Rangers game for the 64. I am still burning with rage despite that happening more than 20 years ago. Even Sonic 06 was better than fucking Superman64.
Yeah Big Rigs for example is worse than most of the lower tier games, cause it isn't finished and barely even qualifies as a game. At least you can play and finish the other ones.
Whoever made this iceberg must have been a fan of the channel Rerez, as most of the games in this list where covered by them in their Just Bad series. I suspect that might be why there’s so many mediocre games.
The lower tiers are for lesser known examples, not for worse ones. The top tier is where the worst generally are because the most stunningly awful ones like Big Rigs are famous for being so terrible. That said, I agree this iceberg is... not great, even if the narrator does an excellent job of discussing it. I'm not a fan of any "worst games" list that doesn't include Dragon Age 2, and any list that doesn't include Cyberjank 2077 is simply bad and wrong. The fucking Challenger had a better launch.
Thank you for keeping the "Woo, this video was SO long geez I can't believe how long this was" to a minimum. Also I like the ambience and a special kudos to the clarity of your speaking. A lot of iceberg channels/videos don't take their audio quality seriously.
Late response but I agree with this comment wholeheartedly. I’m really over the “A Brief Retrospective of Insert Game Here lolrofl” and the video is twelve hours long trend.
I'm surprised no one mentions the game Journey of the Light, an indie game that came out on Steam back in 2015. It was a puzzle game where you play as a floating ball of light and you must light lamps scattered around eight large levels to beat the game. The issue is, there weren't eight levels, but just one. Players who bought the game couldn't get past the first level and when the game was datamined, players discovered the game consisted entirely of the first level. When players accused the game's developer, Lord Kres, of scamming consumers, he explained that the game consisting of only one level was the result of a glitch caused by releasing a bug fix patch, and that the glitch didn't occur after he playtested the game with the patch installed. He had built up a small following as an up-and-coming indie developer after he showcased early builds of a game called Voxelized, which came out after Journey of the Light, funnily enough.
See, if The Quiet Man wanted to make people who can hear feel the same frustration as the deaf, they should've just had everyone using sign language, and then the second playthrough have the subtitles. It'd give anyone who knew sign language the ability to tell the story right away, inclusive to the deaf and those who are considerate to the deaf, and an exclusion to those who take hearing and speaking for granted, inverting the status quo,. But they did it wrong and bad, and everyone was lost and dissatisfied.
In fact, you might have had a chance of picking up a couple signs along the way thanks to ASL's almost cipher-like replacement of English words along the same grammatical structure. That would have at least offered some kind of value to non-deaf players even if they have zero chance of figuring out the story
Wow, you make it sound like people who dont know sign language are assholes or something. Not knowing that language doesnt make you a bad person, geez...
@@icarusgaming6269 1. That is not how ASL works, I think you're talking about a pidgin sign. 2. I don't give a fuck about ASL, why couldn't the game be made in BSL, or PSL, or Japanese sign language? Not everything has to center America

Honestly I wonder how the dev of The Letter is doing because even if the game wasn't great the dev seemed to genuinely be passionate, I hope they're finding success
From what I've seen, he's actually doing alright. He is making a new game and is making game dev videos. He even put The Letter on Steam, and was self-aware to recognize its reputation in the decription: "Relive the Wii U game that gathered so much hate it became a cult classic with a uniquely passionate following".
Yeah, these are the type of devs I enjoy Sure, I like good games, but it jsut feel like a game is more bearable or hell even enjoyable whe you know that the dev genually tried, had passion and cared for the game. Sure it may be garbage, but atleast they were passionate and cared...as long as they keep improving over time, they may make the next Hallow Knight, the next Cult of The Lamb
Oh my gosh, when Balan Wonderworld came out, I was so obsessed with that game and how bad it was. No I haven't played it and I likely never will, but I was just eating up all videos talking about it and the book.
In the Rouge Warrior segment, it's mentioned that it was criticised for the overuse of profanity, but a lot of people didn't know that Richard Marcinco used basically as much profanity in his books, so if anything it's a faithful homage to the original books
Dude great video, subbed! Narration was basically exactly what I look for in an iceberg video especially as I like to fall asleep to them - consistent tone and volume, no sudden spikes to jolt me awake, engaging direction and writing. If you wanted to, you could honestly make a second iceberg of worst video games since this one missed quite a few (that the other commenters mentioned, also the original Action 52 and other games like Custer’s Revenge and the Alone in the Dark reboot) not your fault though since you didn’t make it. I’d watch a part 2 for sure!
Here's the thing with the other truck moving/not moving in Big Rigs: Eventually the publisher or developer or whatever put out a patch so that the truck would move, but it STILL stops right before the finish line, so they couldn't even patch the game properly. Also, apparently one of the very few tracks just doesn't load. At all. On a different note, Duke Nukem Forever is no longer the game with the longest development time, as Beyond Good and Evil 2 surpassed it last year.
All of Digital Homicide's library was pulled over the behaviour of the company and perception of asset flipping. It's really hard to argue with the final card game being maybe one of the worst ever, the 3 kingdoms period has so much recognition internationally, to the point Koei's been turning out entries to two series based on the war for over 35 years in the case of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms, and 25 for Dynasty Warriors.
Damn when I saw "149 subscribers" I thought I was seeing things, this is so high quality. I love iceberg videos and this one's definitely up there as a well researched and interesting iceberg. I hope to see more icebergs from you! Subbed!
@@BorfieKai Yeah, Hardtime and YouTestament were so bad they're good, but Empire is straight up genuinely a good game that completely shows up pretty much all AAA wrestiling games.

Small correction on the Gundam 0079 section- the suits are not called "Gundams", the name refers specifically to the protagonist's suit, with the suits as a whole being called "mobile suits".
Not a fan, don't know much, but I do have MSG collectibles named stuff like Gundam Leo and Gundam H, are those different mobile suits with the same name or like different forms of the original cause they don't really look all that much like the original. Really weird I don't have a Zaku though...
I feel like the Creator should have called this the "Bad and Disappointing games iceberg", since a lot of these seem like they were more disappointing or just mediocre rather than *the worst*. But that's not on you, you're just going through the iceberg chart. Good video!
Wow I remember watching really old Watchmojo and similar videos as a kid and seeing shit like the ET game, Cheetah men, Big Rigs and more on those lists. Kinda nice to see a modern video tackling ALL of these classic bad apples here.
Things to point out: 1:04:18 Life of Black tiger got most infamous because it somehow had it's trailer published on the official playstation youtube channel: th-cam.com/video/uM523jjrvf4/w-d-xo.html 1:08:07 a walking simulator is how people call a game where there isn't much gameplay besides just walking. It's something that is pretty common in "artsy" games, so the term became a sort of tongue in cheek way of calling something pretentious as well.
I actually played the Wii version of Staff of Kings as a kid and remember liking it. In fact, I still have the disc. I was a big Indiana Jones fan, and there weren't many readily accessible Indy games outside of Staff of Kings and the LEGO ones. I would've liked to have seen the 360/PS3 version release, but it got cancelled. I remember seeing a teaser for it on X-Play.
Looks like you're pretty new to TH-cam from what I've seen, I just wanted to say I really appreciate your channel and all the depth you put into making this Iceberg, if I was to watch an Iceberg compared to someone with a million subs next to your sub count, I wouldn't have been able to tell you who had more experience. Keep up the amazing work and you have my sub for this.
One important thing to note about balan wonderworld is that it was made by Yuji Naka, one of Sonic the Hedgehog creators (he made the momentum-based engine and gameplay), which is the main reason why it was such a big disappointment for many people
This was a super fun video!! Your narration was great and made it worth listening to. So many of these icebergs just have people reading from a script but this is an exception. Can't wait to see more of your content!
I believe it was Austin Eruption who did a fairly extensive video on the game's supplemental material and lore, and having watched that, I feel that there was definitely a lot of potential which was sadly left unmet due to various constraints and deadlines.
@@ConvincingPeople i feel the same way. the story characters and aesthetics had charm but the gameplay and level design kills it. in another better universe balan wonderworld was an animated story oriented tv show or movie because as a game its just not good
Y'know, without knowing the context behind how Rogue Warrior came to be, I had once made a joke about how it writes its protagonist like a teenager would write in a creative writing class without a "no swearing" rule. I later found out, nope, that's just how the real person the game is based on talks in day-to-day conversation.
Hard work means nothing if the end product isn't worthwhile. I know that "It's the journey, not the Destination", but I'd argue that it is "The Journey AND the Destination".
Sonic 06 still makes me sad, because I can see just how fucking hard they tried to make a good game. They just didn't have enough time and resources because of Sega's greed and corporate fuckery.
There are a lot of games missing in this iceberg. For example, the Zelda CDi games were mentioned, but not Hotel Mario? At least the former(s) had hilariously memable cutscenes, we can't even say that about the latter. And the last game in the video was hated because it only exists to be a cash-grab that tries to extract every last Yuan from its players, by using a beloved story/IP? Well, that's just gaming in a nutshell for the past decade or so. Great video, TheVomcharTV. Keep at it.
@@olivercharles2930 I guess I just wasn't exposed to all those sweet Hotel Mario memes. That game (and many others) should have still been in that iceberg...
I completely forgot about The Life Of Black Tiger until watching through this. I remember rewatching gameplay videos of it as a kid because I couldn’t buy the game.
I'm honestly surprised that YIIK: A Postmodern RPG wasn't on here since I remember there being a lot of controversy with the story, characters, and gameplay. Luckily though the two main devs are trying to make a revamped version as a free update for anyone who bought the game initially so there's that to look forward to at least.
YIIK may be disliked for its millennial writing and all around cringe and repetitiveness. But the game functions and works well, no massive game breaking bugs or unfinished levels. It may be unlikable but it is not unplayable, incompetent, or unfinished
@@RetroLogan64 I guess so, though the list seems to be more about games generally disliked by the public rather than all of the games being genuinely terrible (I doubt Sonic R is that bad). I played YIIK myself and it definitely isn't the worst (mostly just being average with the boring/slow combat and very rare scripting bug), but I could see somebody not being happy with the game. The devs and community do have passion for the game though which I will not deny and I can't wait to see what revamps the update will bring, since the new changes do look interesting and might greatly improve the game.
@@RetroLogan64Late reply but the game did have bugs. They've probably been fixed by now, but from what I know, your game could freeze entirely while fighting a boss, or having a particularly extensive battle, causing you to have to load a previous save. There's a good review of the game by the user Running Shine, though you've probably already seen it. Also there's the cringe mechanic with Rory that assigns a value to how many times you'd been dismissive or mean to him, which would cause him to commit suicide and would completely erase his existence from the game pretty much.
so a few fun facts about big rigs that i diddn't know about until recently 1 the game was literally a money laundering scheme, like the publisher explicitely told the devs to release it undercooked so they could write the loss off their taxes (or something, similar, and equally as illegal/unethical) 2 it actually got a "sequel" (though i forget the name) which was just the same game, but using cars and bikes instead of trucks, and that was slightly more playable 3 as implied by the first 2 fun facts, the game was originally going to be...well a full game with way more tracks, as well as the ability to ride cars and bikes when it was released, it was effectively a tech demo for that unreleased racing game
45:51 The comparison to SM64 and Quake seem particularly wild on this one. This thing looks like a flash game from 10 years later, which doesn't seem bad for an indie flash game, especially one by a shovelware studio. Great video overall though! You put way more into this iceberg than other people do and it genuinely shows in quality, the editing shows a good channel. Hoping you make more !
Honestly a great video. I always enjoy these types of obscure media. One fun fact about the Life of Black Tiger. There is still a teaser on an OFFICIAL playstation youtube channel. How someone approved of it is still beyond me... Also, it uses stolen music from the Anime Parasyte the Maxim.
I'm happy this video got alot of views for you. You put in alot of of work to make quality content and you were rewarded for it may you continue to succeed
For Big Rigs there was an update that added moving AI (although the AI never finished so there's still no way to lose) and fixed (in most definitions of the word) the "You're Winner" graphic. Life Of Black Tiger was also thrust into infamy when the trailer was posted to PlayStation's official TH-cam page despite the amateurish, everything, leading to people questioning Sony's quality control. The Slaughtering Grounds, along with Digital Homicide's other games, were all removed from Steam in 2018 after the studio attempted to get Steam to give them the full names and addresses of the people they were attempting to sue for their bad reviews of Slaughtering Grounds and other games. Steam refused the request and subsequently terminated their relationship (or whatever they call it) with Digital Homicide over it.
Sonic R is unironically one of my favorite games ever. It's a racing game, not a platformer, that's how it's supposed to control. It's novel for a racing game, focusing on collection. The ost is so good, one of the best sonic OSTs, and that's hard to do. Such a good game. I like '06, but that's just cause the jank is fun and has the best sonic OST no question
I express my admiration for the amazing work you did there. There was only one game I was expecting, but did not see - Limbo of the Lost. But I thoroughly enjoyed it nonetheless
I tend to put iceberg videos on when I try to sleep as they're super relaxing, but after 5 minutes, I was enjoying this one too much to actually get to sleep oops
If they’d have taken the time to remove the glitches and speed up the loading times, Sonic 06 wouldn’t have been that bad. And fixed that damn silver fight
Hey, you're doing a really good job! I can see that you just started your channel and this was an excellent iceberg video, especially considering it was your first. Keep up the good work!
awesome and well made video! worthy of being something i watch while having lunch, which is very much a compliment! i have an interest in "bad" things, especially video games.
Some of my first ever video games were Batman: Dark Tomorrow and Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis. They came as a three-pack with a godzilla fighting game, and my older brother got them when I was about three. If our next two choices of video games weren't Metroid Prime and Sonic Mega Collection, I might not still play video games today. EDIT: Nevermind i actually had Batman Vengeance. I never got past the vine hallway, I don't remember if it scared me or if I just couldn't get Batman to shuffle along the wall.
This is why I don't agree with people who say that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a "horrible game". It maybe poorly made, but it is still an OK game... Especially compared to all of the games on this Iceberg.
Congrats on being one of The Algorithm’s chosen ones! This is a great video, you deserve it. I think the reason Reboot was unpopular was that it was so unfaithful to the TV show. Using a gun? Bob would never!
Have aways been a PES person during the FIFA era, could actually dribble in PES instead of constantly losing the ball to opponents 5 miles away somehow, and scoring or defending goals is fair compared to the coin toss that is FIFA, where you point the joystick is where the ball or goalie goes. Wondered what happened to it. Since PS4 launch couldn't find it anywhere anymore...
The actual plot of The Quiet Man is *wild.* There's so much bizarre shit about ancient Gods, chosen one prophecies, and identical twins that you have literally no chance of figuring it out without subtitles. If the intention was to have you try and follow along based on body language, they wrote the story in a way that goes against that in every way possible. I suggest you look it up, cause it's so much crazier than you could possibly imagine Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis and Superman: The Man of Steel belong together in a double feature listing because just like the CDI platformers, they are the same game. Somehow the staff transferring from Atari to TDK managed to bring over the entire source code and landed *another* contract with DC Comics, and what they made was a reskin of a game that was terrible to begin with. How these bandits got away with such a scam in broad daylight is beyond me. They were responsible for Dark Tomorrow too, but that game is at least different from the other two
Sonic R is a funny one as it came out when I was a kid obsessed with Sonic, and I desperately wanted the game after going into a shop that was selling it.
The easiest way to see if someone's never actually played 06 is if they call it one of the worst games ever made. It's not even remotely close. I wouldn't even call it the worst Sonic game.
You know, still, all of these really are just the tip of the iceberg. I dont know the technical specifications, but the Wii and DS had very easy to learn APIs which lead to a slew of trash games, like bootleg DVDs on the side of the road. Blameitonjorge has a video where he covers a handful of these for the Wii and it included things like a DDR game with a Smurfs theme.
I think one game that's missed on this iceberg is Frogger: The great quest. This game is notorious for having broken and clunky physics and plus models animations freezing in place are noticable from far distances to and the dialog is cheesy at times and scored a 5.1 on IMDB, 3/10 on IGN and 34% on Metacritic. I think the game might of been mostly panned by critics at launch as other games were downright better than this one. This was also when Konami tried to reboot the Frogger series I think...
Its actually interesting that most of these bad games received mixed reviews, and decades later received terrible reviews. Reminds me Albuns like Nevermind and other bands that at the time, received mix reviews, but decades later received 5/5. Its usually the initial reaction that matters(with exceptions, of course)...

A perfect representation of how much effort was put into Big Rigs is that bridge you "cross" along the driving route. You just clip through, down into and across the ravine and then back up onto the road on the other side again. They couldn't even be bothered to add collision to the one object that the player is directed to travel across.
It is funny though
Don't forget being able to go to warp. In reverse.
It also should be noted that this was made when games where still only released in physical boxes. So when you look at the box on the shelf in a store, just based on the package, it would actually look like a legit game if you didn't know any better.
The strangest thing is that the camera doesn't follow you down so the game obviously knows there's something there
I read this right as it happened in the video
Honestly, the idea of a horror game with a deaf protagonist and the ability to not hear anything at all sounds like a great idea.
Always a disappointment when something comes out with a really unique idea but poor execution.
Sounds fire tbh
It’s too bad they couldn’t find some way to use sound vibrations. The fully deaf can feel (mostly low) sound frequencies through things such as touching a speaker playing music.

@OrangeWing11man goat simulator is a 10/10.

YOU WHAT!

From what I've seen, he's actually doing alright. He is making a new game and is making game dev videos. He even put The Letter on Steam, and was self-aware to recognize its reputation in the decription: "Relive the Wii U game that gathered so much hate it became a cult classic with a uniquely passionate following".
I really hope the dev gets to put out more games that people can play and appreciate them, hell, they could get a team

Here's the thing with the other truck moving/not moving in Big Rigs:
Eventually the publisher or developer or whatever put out a patch so that the truck would move, but it STILL stops right before the finish line, so they couldn't even patch the game properly. Also, apparently one of the very few tracks just doesn't load. At all.
On a different note, Duke Nukem Forever is no longer the game with the longest development time, as Beyond Good and Evil 2 surpassed it last year.
They also unfortunately changed the YOU'RE WINNER' message to 'YOU WIN' in said patch.

1:08:07 a walking simulator is how people call a game where there isn't much gameplay besides just walking. It's something that is pretty common in "artsy" games, so the term became a sort of tongue in cheek way of calling something pretentious as well.

The devs and community do have passion for the game though which I will not deny and I can't wait to see what revamps the update will bring, since the new changes do look interesting and might greatly improve the game.
@@RetroLogan64Late reply but the game did have bugs. Also there's the cringe mechanic with Rory that assigns a value to how many times you'd been dismissive or mean to him, which would cause him to commit suicide and would completely erase his existence from the game pretty much.
so a few fun facts about big rigs that i diddn't know about until recently
1 the game was literally a money laundering scheme, like the publisher explicitely told the devs to release it undercooked so they could write the loss off their taxes (or something, similar, and equally as illegal/unethical)
2 it actually got a "sequel" (though i forget the name) which was just the same game, but using cars and bikes instead of trucks, and that was slightly more playable
3 as implied by the first 2 fun facts, the game was originally going to be...well a full game with way more tracks, as well as the ability to ride cars and bikes
when it was released, it was effectively a tech demo for that unreleased racing game
The ''sequel'' is called ''Midnight Race Club:Supercharged!''.

I think the reason Reboot was unpopular was that it was so unfaithful to the TV show. Using a gun? Bob would never!
Hey that is my iceberg! Thank you for covering it!
Something tells me that the guy who made this iceberg really likes Rerez. Most of the games on this list are games they’ve reviewed on their channel
Could tell because of the Morph Man mention, which, as far as I know, only Rerez has actually covered that game.
I suggest you look it up, cause it's so much crazier than you could possibly imagine
Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis and Superman: The Man of Steel belong together in a double feature listing because just like the CDI platformers, they are the same game. Somehow the staff transferring from Atari to TDK managed to bring over the entire source code and landed *another* contract with DC Comics, and what they made was a reskin of a game that was terrible to begin with. How these bandits got away with such a scam in broad daylight is beyond me. They were responsible for Dark Tomorrow too, but that game is at least different from the other two
Awesome video
Could've just lumped all of digital homicide games together into one entry.
Great video man
Sonic R is a funny one as it came out when I was a kid obsessed with Sonic, and I desperately wanted the game after going into a shop that was selling it.
Well Made Buddy! Keep Up The Good Work! :)
What do you mean you have only 346 subs
You deserve a LOT more, man!
Great video! I'm surprised Bad Rats wasn't on here lol
Imagine making a game so terrible, you try to sue people for writing bad reviews.
