Even viruses used to be creative in so many ways, it's amazing I've lived to see the day where it used to be very unknown and "scary" but nowadays it's just pathetic and lazy. Malware used to be art, now it's just distorted and used for the giant Corporate and War Machines that drive our entire base economy... It's kinda sad to see, that an extension of ourselves and the stars, being computers (and us, plants, animals etc.) on a literal atomic-subatomic level being perverted into such dystopian means of use when we could have been exploring the very stars we're all made out of by the 80's-90's already. I feel very sorry for our species because of this but still we should praise the good and use of* technology some of us try to do to prevent a slide back into barbarism, bigotry and ignorance which is already so rife and has been for a while in our world. Hopefully the future can be better.
Well you got realize security has also gotten insane in the past few years. Most malware doesn't work on newer computers or is going to get detected immediately. Most hackers target big corporations because the reward vs risk on regular users isn't worth it.
my friend once made a virus that sent the remote Control key to his email and he turned off the whole school computer lab every 5 minutes my teacher just laughed it off

Loved the video! As a member of the now dissolved hobbyist malware writer group (we parted ways, many of us have a job in the low-level software engineering field, and there's no time or really anything undiscovered left), I can't thank you enough for shining light on what malware is supposed to be. As a tribute to the community and in memory of the people we miss, me and my good friend are writing the final malware that'll be a logical end to our group's work. That topic is personal for me, so thank you a lot for making this video conveying such a simple, but a striking point. ❤

My mom got her master's in computer science in the mid 90s and sometimes tells of the shenanigans some of her peers and colleagues got into to prank eachother. All more or less harmless stuff to have some fun like error messages telling you to "please pump the water out of the hard drive" or later making all the letters in your document fall down.
i really wanna see a non-destructive malware manage to make headlines by making every computer play the dancing gandalf video at the same time for 1 minute, then delete only itself and leave everything else maybe leaving behind a simple message to remember it happened, maybe a little game that doesn't have any malware.
Finally a good video about this subject. I love that you didn't just finish at MEMZ but also showed some of the later way more impressive stuff that never got as "viral" as my shitty meme trojan.
I feel like Rick rolls and derivatives like getting stick-bugged are sort of like modern non-destructive malware. They are fun and only waste your time but aren’t dangerous or destructive.
There’s one interesting benefit to joke malware like Memz, that’s when you use it to completely melt a tech scammer’s computer while listening to them absolutely panic. There is nothing quite more satisfying.

Wait, Malware's full name is malicious software? I thought it was malfunctioning software (As opoosed to intentionally screwing users up by messing with the OS.)
In my opinion, coding or anything related to a computer was a really obscure niche in the 90s. And much like the pilots in WW1, the computer enthusiasts/malware makers acted much more civil to eachother because the activity they were partaking in was so niche that every fellow nerds/pilots is a potential best pal. Plus, it takes skills to achive such feats -> they made it into a sport where sportmanship was encouraged. Nowadays, as hacking and coding have become more mainstream than ever, combined with our society's shift to materialism, hacking has become nothing more than a fluke, sadly.
I remember watching a live streamer open trojan on April Fools Day of all days, and the exe was titled “Google” iirc. This is such a brilliantly informative and engaging video. Your explanations are so concise. I love how your editing matches the era you're talking about - you have tracker music for the DOS era in the 1980s and MIDI music for the 1990s. So cool.
If I were to ever make my own malware it would be less malicious and more mischievous. I would want to make something that could get a scare or laugh out of people but not leave any lasting damage. Maybe force people to play Saw inspired games to save their files or something.
I always wanted to make my own virus/trojan with the payload being a simple .txt file. The text file would be a simple message telling the user that they weren't careful, and they should be more careful. Simple, harmless, and hopefully would educate the user on Internet safety.

I made a trojan once, specifically for Windows 2000 and WinNT. Didn't do much, all it did was copy itself to your startup folder, play Dogsong from Undertale, and repeatedly pop up error messages that say "GET DUNKED ON!". It was super easy to write (written in C++ using the SDL and Windows libraries, and used a lot of SYSTEM commands to copy itself over to the startup folder, the whole thing was probably 30 lines or so), and super easy to remove (remove it from the startup folder). But it was just silly fun. If I were to actually "distribute" it (wouldn't work on modern computers anyway, it was written for Windows NT file structures) I would have hosted the audio file remotely and had the program download it first, but there's no point in doing that.
We need some sort of "funware" hosting service where people can upload their programs (audited of course) that don't do anything bad, instead they just look cool or do cool things.

"Malware (malicious software) wasn't always for malicious purposes"
Quite the statement.
it was....idk if this is a real definition, jerkware.
i mean the first computer worm wasn’t intended for malicious purposes - it was a test to see if a computer program could be self replicating
Good point!
I think society wasnt less materialistic then, but nerds were so far removed from the rest of society that they probably were far less so
I remember watching a live streamer open trojan on April Fools Day of all days, and the exe was titled “Google” iirc.

I don't dream that often and very rarely I have nightmares. But when I do, it's ALWAYS about my computer/phone getting a virus. The sense of uncontrollability of the technology really scares me.
Also because nowdays we have a lot of important informations in computers and phones, so the idea of losing them drives me crazy.
The funny thing is that I never dream about killers, ghosts, demons or monsters in general.

BRO I HAVE A SPECIAL INTEREST IN UNDERTALE I WOULD LOVE THIS!
My favorite kind of malware is one that annoys you and screws with your computer a bit, but can be stopped at will, so
Imagine being a kid pirating stuff and stumbling into an acid trip and after a bluescreen everything goes back to normal.
We need some sort of "funware" hosting service where people can upload their programs (audited of course) that don't do anything bad, instead they just look cool or do cool things.

Bringing up the overlay randomly when you watch a youtube video.
Ransomware that appears to be your typical "gimme your money or files go bye bye", but after 5-10 seconds, it goes "nah, just kidding" and unencrypts everything.
When certain conditions are met, a 144p resolution gman appears and goes "good day bitch." Before dissappearing. Also the sound is bitcrushed as much as you possibly can get it.
