  • SEPTA's Trolley Route 15, the Girard Avenue Line is a Heritage Streetcar line, operated by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), along Girard Avenue through North and West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. As of 2007, it is the only surface trolley line in the City Transit Division that is not part of the Subway--Surface Trolley Lines (although it is designated as such on SEPTA's rail maps). SEPTA PCC II vehicles are used on the line.
    The line was first opened in 1859 as a horse car line operated by the Richmond and Schuylkill River Passenger Railway, and electrified in 1895. Service was suspended (replaced with buses) in 1992, along with Route 23 (Germantown Avenue-11th and 12th Streets) and Route 56 (Torresdale-Erie Avenues). On September 4, 2005, trolley service was restored.
    As of April 29, 2012, east of Frankford Ave the line is operated by buses due to major reconstruction, west of Frankford is still run by PCC II. Trolleys now terminate at Frankford and Delaware Avenue (Northern Liberties Loop), buses terminate at Girard Station under the Market-Frankford Line.

    Went to the USA first time in 2019 Sanfransisco has PCC cars, so nice to know that these beautiful old American cars were not all scrapped.
    It looks like the cars in the video are now air conditioned and it even sounds like like they have inverters running 3phase aAX traction motors.

    Going to St. Joe’s Prep for 4yrs gave me a great deal of views of the original PCC cars plying along Girard Avenue. We rode the Broad Street Subway from Erie to Girard. We grew up on a small street with Erie Avenue at the South end of our block. The 53 and 56 trolleys were daily sights as well as the 23 Trolley two blocks away on Germantown Avenue. Sometimes we rode the Subway, El and G bus to our grandparents house in West Philly and sometimes we rode the 10 Trolley which was at the end of their block. We rode the 13 Trolley to Yeadon and walked into Darby unless a 13 was covering the 62 Trolley line, to see our other grandparents. I love the PCC trolleys and have a small fleet for my HO gauge model railroad. I enjoyed this video.

    We might be heading towards Philly this summer vacation. So maybe I'll check out these streetcars when I get the chance when I arrive in Philadelphia. I hope.

    It's a damn shame the Germantown Route 23 is not operating, it was the longest run, just over 14 miles.

      Most of North Philly was glad to see the trolleys go. They ran on narrow streets and if someone double-parked or there was a truck parked near the track it would hold everyone up.

      Reg mason232 Which is why they will never restore the trolleys on the 23 in South Philly. And why the 23 bus got split into the 45 south of Market.

    I wonder if SEPTA is going to use the new, modern trolleycars when it gets them? The PCCIIs are ADA accessible (Wheelchair lift). And, if it reopens the 23, what rolling stock will it use there?

    Are there any movies converted to video of the Fineview line in Pittsburg that was running in the early 60's ? of all the fan trips from that line aren't there ANY videos of it ?

    • @4501trainman
      @4501trainman 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl Mac. Transit Gloria Mundi makes an excellent video covering the Finview Line in Pittsburgh. Steel City Traction 3,covering all the North Side lines,mostly in color.I checked and it's now put out by Train Video Depot. It has Digitally added sound from the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum low floor cars and PCC's I believe. It's good enough for me,since I was raised on Fineview and rode the cars until we moved to Florida in 1956.

    I was told that the Girard Ave. Heritage Streetcar line PCC cars have been replaced with buses due to the streetcars being worn out (and probably not rebuilt for future service).
