    I was a kid 1956, at the time they converted the ROUTE 20 trolleys to PCC AIR CARS, I loved the sound of the trolleys rolling down 12th street to SOUTH PHILADELPHIA. We got off at MCKEAN street to see my grandmother. those were the days. SADLY, 1957 ROUTE 20 Was deleted. ROUTE 23 took over 12th street,

    Philadelphia, which once boasted of more trolley lines than any other major city. Those were the glory years for sure. I grew up riding PTC. Trolley cars were the best!

      The only city I've ever seen where they ran directly out of the airport very good idea

      SEPTA is so anti-rail. If they could, they would get rid of the subway, el, and all six trolley lines.

      @1400deadwood The latter which I grew up in had 3 divisions. The BMT, IRT, IND. The first 2 were private subway and el train lines, the IND stood for Independent City owned subway lines and was operated by the NYC goverment. I am a New Yorker who grew up there though not born there. Guess where I was born. Havana,Cuba in 1956.

      @@libertubey2199 Reportedly when NCL took over PTC's management they tried to figure out how to kill the subway-surface lines too, but the tunnels are too narrow and poorly ventilated for any kind of bus to run there, either diesel or electric.

    Every trolley was "green" running on 600 Volts DC. Now we have 1300 buses, all running on diesel fuel.

    Wow to cool back in Philly, old school PTC looks so good. Today SEPTA is not the best look. I think the trolleys back in those days were cool.

    Looks like they tried to cosmetically dress up some of the cars with "wing" headlight treatments and spruced up paint jobs to look more modern like the PCC's (11:46)

      Exactly the idea.
      They were rebuilt and their windows flipped upside down to allow them to get rid of the window guards in favor of a immovable window pane.

  • @gerryphilly53
    @gerryphilly53 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that the picture at 5:17 of the video showing Car #6251 and listing the location as “Chelton and Midvale” actually was taken at Coulter and Morris. Route 52 was single tracked on Coulter from Wayne Ave to the point where Midvale splits off from Coulter just after the bridge over the Chestnut Hill West rail line.

    • @gerryphilly53
      @gerryphilly53 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it’s car 5261 not 6251.

    • @blue9multimediagroup
      @blue9multimediagroup 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's exactly where it is.
      Coulter Street looking West towards Morris with the car heading East toward Wayne Avenue.
      My dad used to live on Penn St a half block south

    • @blue9multimediagroup
      @blue9multimediagroup 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the Ridge terminus was single track next to the eastbound curb.
      Not to mention, Rt 52 was discontinued in January 1956 so no way was this picture in that spot or on that date.

    I'm sure many of these cars were kept running by SEPTA, until they replaced with Kawasaki light rail vehicles in the 80's.

      You mean Luzerne Depot? That I'm not sure as it's been leased to a cardboard recycling company for the last two decades.
      Victory never had trolley tracks in it as it's always been a bus depot. The trolleys use part of the MFL shops for maintenance and the NHSL has its own shop next to the NHSL main line just west of 69th St Tmnl.
