one thing that does trouble me with more modern western anime fans is this focus on amazing visuals and stellar animation for every frame.
It's not that I'm against the idea of a remake of Dragon Ball in any form, we've seen that with things like Path to Power which is a condensing of both the original Dragon Ball plot and the Red Ribbon plot, two of the hypest of the original show.
But it's the focus pacing and visuals that bothers me. I've seen people drop shows that have fast pacing but lack lustre visuals and I've seen people drop show that have normal pacing and amazing visuals. With shows like Dragon Ball the point has always been to go along with the character on the adventure, to be there with them as they're seeing new things and experiencing things, it's one of the reasons I love Daima as it's got all that classic adventure with Dragon Ball in it along with crisp visuals and seemingly at the moment an amazing story, it's got the right blend of comedy action and adventure to it.
Which is where my worry comes in, because if people are thinking that remaking Dragon Ball with modern visuals and animation techniques will make it a better viewing experience, I think they'll find they're very sorely wrong. Part of the charm of Dragon Ball is those moments where we have nothing going on, Gohan staring at the moon for 20 seconds, a wide shot of a mountain range that has a blip of a character jumping from top to top to gather food.
    The art is in that.
And relying on action primarily will not keep people interested. They'll drop out as they'll know what it is already.

Personally, I don’t think this is just a Western anime fan thing-I think it’s more of a trend among newer or younger anime fans, especially since the surge in new fans during the pandemic. Shows like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man became extremely popular, and still are, due to their exceptional animation where it felt like god himself blessed every frame and pacing that went to 100% and never went down. These factors have shaped the expectations of many newer fans, which is why we see so many people refusing to watch older shows, especially those from before the 2010s. For them, the standard for even decent animation is much higher than it ever was, which is unfortunate. It makes it harder for me to recommend shows like Dragon Ball, Monster, or Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad to younger or newer anime fans.
I personally don’t think remaking Dragon Ball will improve it-besides, I prefer the manga more (not sure if that’s a hot take), and the original anime can never be replaced or topped in my eyes. However, I do think it would be interesting to see a modern animated take on what was done with the original anime. And if they do remake it I hope that they keep the charm of the original anime while also adding great animation on par with Daima. if they fall a little short on the animation front then it’s alright as long as they don’t make it as bad as the first couple episodes of super 😂.

@@The_DEMON_RAIN I'm glad you brought up Chainsaw Man because I remember that coming out and the absolute and complete meltdown that happened in 2022 when it didn't win best winter anime.
      Bocchi the Rock did.
The anger primarily came from western fans who thought the animation on its own was vastly superior and the action and gore sublime (and it was, it just wasn't anywhere near as good an anime as Bocchi was)
This beak between Western fans has been coming for a while, I've seen people argue that 'because of ' hype animation in a movie series, first-time reactors should watch that immediately after watching a TV anime, then go back to the TV anime after the movie, when the order of release for it was TV, TV s2, Movie, TV s3. And explaining to them that if you layer it like that, the brain is more accustomed to the lower quality animation of TV when you go back to it from the movie than TV, Movie, TV s2, TV s3. They want the spectacle rather than the story.
And the series primarily responsible for bringing these people in are shows like My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer and JJK. More seasoned Anime fans either can criticise those series for their lack of story potential along with saying how they love the animation in it (I mean all of them are practically dripping with Sakuga in every freaking frame) but the people coming into anime - especially those in the West who only are introduced to it via things like Netflix - aren't going to get that.
If I were the doomer 9000+ I'd say that remaking Dragon Ball would be a mistake because it'd supplant the original.
What i'd suggest for any dragon ball fan is to get the complete collection of the original anime on DVD/Blu Ray as then if the worst happens (and that's the vanishing of the original in the face of the remake) and the remake sucks even with great animation, you have a copy of the original to keep so that the series doesn't just disappear into a fad like a lot of things do.
And no, it's not a hot take to prefer the manga, there's like 90% of things in anime I could say the original source is better. the rare exceptions are things like Bleach TYBW where Kubo is using the anime to give us the completed version of things he couldn't when the manga was coming out.
This has been a nice little conversation, I hope you have a good rest of your day
      😃
