THANK YOU for telling people AGAIN how we can tell that DAIMA has a great production. its exactly as you said. the characters just look the same all the time, loads of micromovement and character acting, interesting layouts for scenes THE WORKS. i hope people start appreciating that more because the time we spend outside of battles is just as important as bombastic setpieces to make the show memorable.
What I interpreted from "best schedule around" was that the animators weren't killing themselves to make a silly cartoon. That alone was enough to make me praise this show.
absolutely leaned in when we got to the town and /especially/ the tavern, it felt oppressive and like everyone was staring specifically at Gokū, it was excellently done. looking forward to more of Kiryama's direction!
You know Toriyama's involvement was deep this time around when you see that Goku fight while eating: that came straight from a Jackie Chan movie and I'm all for it!
The art consistency has been really great so far, it's so cool seeing Tsuji shine and finally be free out of the Heroes prison she was. Her evolution has been very lowkey all these years but now you can see how much of her work has improved comparing it to super
It does frustrate me that a lot of DB fans will just write this series off because it's not constant Shida-tier crazy action, because this has so much charm and life to it it's wild where we were at with Super
6:41 Yes, finally somebody gets it Dima is not a crazy animated series with crazy web Jen style animation for each episode not even one piece could do that. the schedule helped polish up stuff to wear not only action animators could have the time to make them be as well animated as they can, but also slightly limited animated moments like dialogue could have subtle or noticeable bits of animation that may not be much, but still helps in making the characters feel alive and I am all for it. I’ve always been a sucker for that kind of stuff. It’s why I enjoyed episode two so much despite it being less animated compared to something like episode one
After being spoiled by OP, I’m expecting more because what you’re describing is what OP, a long running anime has been doing throughout whole episodes. OP fan letter is a perfect example of that and even the episodes with Koby and Garp are fully animated from start to finish and are also highly polished. Maybe they’re keeping the heavy hitters for the important sections but my dream for DB is to actually push the limit of animation to the next level. Currently, it’s polished but tame. I wanna see polished and “go wild”. Imagine Vincent who animated the best scenes from OP decides to do some cuts on Daima. Or Masami Mori who’s known for his very loose animation. If they brought back Megumi to direct an episode, I would cream my pants.
I find myself looking forward to these almost as much as the actual episodes week to week, seeing the episode first and noticing things before seeing these deep dives is such a treat!
Yes, my favorite supervisor as well as animator was honestly not expecting a supervised episode from her so soon considering the work she did on episode one, but I keep forgetting how fast she is I mean since she was basically the one that made the second half of dragon Ball super episode 24 look polish in terms of artwork X3
I really appreciate this grander view on the production and all the things that into each episode! Also, recently the r/anime rewatch of DQ Dai ended so it makes me so happy to see you mention particular scenes of it that makes me go "omg DQ Dai mention!!" Looking forward to next week!
When it comes to the argument about "Normal" animation, i feel that's still a good thing even if people don't get the main subject? Sometimes a sign of a good production is that things just happen through the audience eyes. It's the analogy of The Wizard of Oz: You don't want to see behind the curtain, and i think that applies when a show looks good, just as much as when a show looks bad. If you manage to have a production where the average person doesn't notice the cracks or quirks, i think that's a statement that you did a good job.
6:37-7:44 so well put. you basically worded everything I take mental notes of (little stuff I usually rewind to appreciate again) and it's great hearing someone spell it out nicely. I really appreciate that. I'm sure artists that share a similar vision feel seen when viewers are able to put their extra efforts into words like this, even if it doesn't stand out as much compared to the action for the average viewer. looking forward to next week! be sure to take your time!
6:30 I guess that's the issue when stuff like JJK and CSM are not only some of the most popular anime, but also insane sakuga projects that people know were done under awful schedules. People then expect a perfect schedule to be the second coming of Christ in terms of visuals regardless of the people behind it or the vision of the project. Regardless I'm very happy they were given this schedule as the character art all looks really nice and polished. There's a lot of off model character art in Super due to its schedule so it's really cool to see what the team is capable of under a good schedule. Especially in a time where I feel like many productions don't have the privilege of being under such a schedule Also wow I didn't realize Yasuto Hirohara was on this episode as well. Always dope to see fresh names on Daima
Yeah...the stuff that happened with JJK season 2 was a common occurrence from withing the industry. It was packed with Sakuga artists but when we look at the entire season in a broader more grounded view, there's a lot of inconsistencies due to scheduling constraints. Some episodes were flat out limited in animation, some had art inconsistency through segments of the episodes and some had different types of supervision in one episode. But Ajay is right about the general audience's outlook on "special" or amazing production. People think it's going to be a Sakuga filmfest all through out and I am not going to sugarcoat it, I think that's what most people would prefer nowadays over a polished product without crazy animated shots. Personally for me, I prefer this type of production model where animation is very polished and heavily restricted by chief supervision and design sheets. It feels like I'm watching a product made with rules and consistency. Or so they call it the western production syndrome.
@PamaduRanasinghe 0 seconds ago but One piece has crazy sakuga episodes on a weekly schedule. And it has a healthy schedule like daima. My headcanon is that the series director Aya Komaki worked as a co- series director of the wano arc under Tatsuya Nagamine. Nagamine made the schedule good. So I think komaki learned from him

First time i have seen the og cut of takahashi from the RoF ssj goku vs frieza shot not corrected by yamamuro…almost makes me wish takahashi had full reign for that entire thing with no corrections
Concerning the sleeping redraw, I somewhat agree that it's a little less appealing than the original, but I can see why the correction was made : Goku's position was almost artificialy dynamic, with the leg almost not connecting to Shin because the characters are too far appart for this pose to work, it's a very good looking drawing but the more I look at it the less it feels natural. Nakatsuru's is a bit stiffer but for me clearly holds the upper hand in actually conveying that goku is sleeping peacefully and that his body is actually relaxed. But honestly that's a choice that only matters when you compare them directly, In the episode I would never have been bother by either in a billion year
