FADED SHORTY SOCKS RECIPE
SIZES
The numbers below refer to the circumference of the ball of the foot, not the finished sock.
Kid (5 -6” / 13 - 15 cm) S (7” / 18 cm) M (8” / 20 cm) L (9” / 23 cm) XL ( 10” / 25 cm)
MATERIALS
Yarn
Approximately (123) 147 (164, 189, 211) yards / (112) 134 (150, 173, 193) meters TOTAL of fingering weight sock yarn in a variety of speckled and/or variegated colors. I typically use either 3 or 4 colors for a faded shorty sock.
Needles
US size 1 (2.25 mm)
Notions
Tapestry needle, stitch markers, snips, measuring tape
FADING TIPS
When to Switch Yarns
When working a standard 3-color fade on shorty socks, I finish my gusset decreases and then work 3 rnds before blending in my second color. I start blending the third color about 2” / 5cm before working the toe decreases. Ultimately, use your eye! It’s not an exact science, and you can begin blending a new color when you think the time is right!
How to fade/blend the yarns
When you are ready to start blending in a new color, you can follow this pattern to achieve a more random striping of the old yarn (color A), and the new yarn (color B)

INSTRUCTIONS
Cuff
With US size 1 (2.25 mm) needles and your first color (color A), CO (48) 57 (63, 72, 81) sts and join for working in the rnd, being careful not to twist your sts. Est 2 x 1 ribbing: [k2, p1] to end.
Cont working the ribbing until your cuff measures ¾” (2 cm), or your desired length. On the last rnd of the ribbing, some of you need to adjust your stitch counts. If you are working the Kid size, or L, move on to the leg instructions. The rest of you, make the following increase or decrease according to your size:
S: Work in rib pattern to the last 3 sts, k2tog, p1. 56 sts.
M: Work in rib pattern to the last 3 sts, kfb, k1, p1. 64 sts.
XL: Work in rib pattern to the last 3 sts, k2tog, p1. 80 sts.
Leg
Work 13 rnds even in stockinette, or until the leg, including cuff, is your desired length! The legs on my sample socks measure 2.75” / 7 cm.
Heel Flap
K across the first (24) 28 (32, 36, 40) sts, then begin working the heel flap back and forth across the remaining (24) 28 (32, 36, 40) sts as follows:
Row 1 (RS): K2, [sl 1wyib, k1] to end. Turn work.
Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 wyif, p to end. Turn work.
Row 3: [Sl 1 wyib, k1] to end. Turn work.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until Heel Flap measures (1.75) 2 (2, 2.25, 2.5)” / (4.5) 5 (5, 5, 6) cm. End after you have worked row 3.
Heel Turn
Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 wyif, p (12) 14 (16, 18, 20), p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1 wyib, k3, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 3: Sl 1 wyif, p4, p2tog, p1, turn.
Row 4: Sl 1 wyib, k5, ssk, k1, turn.
You have now established the following pattern for your heel turn: sl 1, knit or purl to 1 st before the gap created by turning on the previous row, ssk or p2tog, k1 or p1, turn. Cont in this pattern until all your heel sts have been working, ending on a RS row. You should now have (14) 16 (18, 20, 22) heel sts.
Gusset
With the right side of your work facing, pick up and k (10) 12 (14, 16, 18) sts along the left side of the heel flap. Next, K across the first (24) 28 (32, 36, 40) sts that we’ve left undisturbed on our needles while working the heel flap. Pm, and pick up (10) 12 (14, 16, 18) sts on the right side of the heel flap. K across the heel sts, then k down the first set of new sts you picked up on the left side. You’ve reached the end of the rnd, and all your sts have now been picked up. You should now have (58) 68 (78, 88, 98) sts on your needles.
Gusset Decreases
Rnd 1: K across (24) 28 (32, 36, 40) sts, sl marker, k1, ssk, k around to 3 sts before the end of rnd, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: Work even with no decreases.
Repeat these two rnds until you have (48) 56 (64, 72, 80) sts on your needles.
Foot
Cont knitting in stockinette until your foot reaches just to the tip of your pinky toe.
Toe
Rnd 1: K1, ssk, k (18) 22 (26, 30, 34) sts, k2tog, k1, pm, k1, ssk, k (18) 22 (26, 30, 34) sts, k2tog, k1.
Rnd 2: K.
Rnd 3: K1, ssk, k to 3 sts before next marker, k2tog, k1, sl m, k1, ssk, k around to 3 sts before end of rnd, k2tog, k1.
Repeat rnds 2 and 3 until (20) 24 (28, 32, 36) sts remain.
Use kitchener stitch to close the toe.
FINISHING
Weave in all ends and block your socks!

These videos have enabled me to buy alllllll the sock patterns!!!!!!! Keep em coming!!!!!!
You know, the cool kids don't wear matching socks, so these are perfect. 😂 thanks Summer, you cracked me up ❤
"The bangs are in charge" I so deeply relate!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Summer, this was a great video, but the real reason I’m commenting is to tell you I bought your book and I’m up to chapter 3. It’s the first time I’ve ever really enjoyed reading an instructional book. You have a great sense of humor and I highly recommend your book to everyone.
Summer, you are adorable. Love your bangs, your socks, your book.
Your socks are gorgeous! I love a good fade!
Oh my god. As a fellow 43 year old, caring about appearance and then going feral is Such a mood. And bangret is absolutely real. (Also, shorty socks are my favorite.) Thank you for another wonderful video!!
Those shorties turned out SO CUTE! I think you should knit just one other and you’ll have two fun pairs! 😍
“Bangret” is a term I haven’t heard before but definitely understand!😂 You’re so cute with or without bangs though. Thanks so much for the fade pattern. I’m definitely casting on some shorties! And I’m buying your book!
I am going to knit my first pair of socks and yes I like shorty socks. Thank you for the pattern.
I’ll keep this “short” .. luv your yarn choices.. luv the shortie socks .. luv the free pattern and luv your channel 💜
Me immediately dropping everything to pick out yarn for faded socks lol! Another great video and I love, love your book😊
I feel you on the bangs. Mine are starting to grow out and I’m feeling a bit better but yeah never again… or at least not until I lose my mind again😂
Beautiful neighborhood!!!!!!
It’s LYS DAY and I celebrated at my Local Yarn Shop (The Ball & Skein in Cambria, California) by buying your book. I’m a “learning knitter” and determined to knit socks this year. Hopefully, your book and videos will help me. Thank you! 🌻🧶 🧦 🧦🙂
Dear Summer..I like your Podcast SOOOO much, but I was already a fan of yours and your nicest Socks of the World! 🍓
These shorties are so beautiful, they came at the Right time, because I wanted to start fading NOW!
I‘m still waiting for your Book to finally comes out und Germany of Spain….they keep puuting us off 😭
Like you, like your home, like your neighbourhood! Saludos 🌴
All three socks are wonderful. I will certainly try fading on coming up socks. How exciting. I’ll also be ordering your book. Thank you!
Wow! Beautiful. Thanks for the lesson in color fades
I laughed so hard when you made the Dwight Shrute comment about your bangs. 🤣😂🤣😂 I love your videos. Also, the bangs are cute but I can’t wear them either. They drive me crazy touching my forehead.
Loved the video this week. Now I’m ready to make a faded pair of socks and use up some of my leftovers . Thanks. Also wanted to let you know that I have enjoyed your book!! Also on a personal note I love your bangs !! Wishing you a very blessed summer season of sock knitting .
Thank you Summer! So looking forward to add more colourful and faded socks!
You could mix and match the ones you have already knit. They would look cute either way!
Thank you for the fade recipe: hope to try it soon! Love the bangs and your up beat personality: see you!
You look great with bangs Summer! Also...I always want to make whichever socks you’re knitting in these videos... so inspired by you! Have a great weekend ❤
Love these shorties! Thank you again for your inspiring video! ❤️
I just found your channel a few days ago when looking for something to watch as I knit my first pair of socks. Fell in love with all your designs and preordered your book this morning. I'm a sock fan in general. Not sure why it's taken so long for me ro knit them but very inspired by your designs and can't wait to make some.
I was on a sock-knitting hiatus but as a Floridian, I love shortie socks! Thank you for sharing this video. It brought me out of my slump and launched my Stash Summer Shortie Sock Saga.
Thanks for warning us about Bangret! I almost did it too but you’ve convinced me not to. And I love you because you, too, embrace your “feral phases”! 😂 Thanks for another great pattern. This year I’m having the “Summer of Socks” as I work my way through your terrific book!
You are the best a color combinations Summer! My favorite is the pink fade shorty sock. 💕
The bangs are so cute on you
I love these socks and will be making some.🎉 This may sound silly but massaging your head for 5 or more minutes daily in the area of your bangs will encourage faster growth. Your stimulating blood flow which helps hair growth. Hope you try it.
OMG, Summer! Those are so beautiful. I've got 2 (blah) sweaters on needles. I'm going to put a pair of socks on the needles TONIGHT! I am loving your book, by the way too!
The socks are beautiful!
Great video! Just now getting into sock knitting and you are making it so much fun. I didn’t buy your book yet since my boys always ask what I would enjoy for Mothers Day and I requested it! Hard to wait but it makes them happy getting me something they know I’ll love so much.
I think you could call the one on the left at 5:45 "fried rice" it's giving Chinese takeout in the best way. Omg also your neighborhood is so cute, reminds me of a lot of the other older neighborhoods in midwestern cities!
I think you look great with bangs! They are a nice change and they will always grow out. BUT - they look great!
Summer, I love your color aesthetic. I am mostly a sweater knitter, but I am in the process of losing weight, so I'm picking up sock knitting. I just got your book today, and I can't wait to get started.
The socks are amazing 🤩🤩 thanks for sharing the pattern for them!!
Thanks! The shorties are beautiful and can’t wait to make a pair!
Love the socks, thanks for sharing got lots of ideas going through my head right now! love the bangs, a shock at first and looked great as the week went on. Also love the doggie cuddles just lost our 15year old cocker😢
Beautiful socks. Thank-you for sharing your neighbourhood, I used to live in a neighbourhood with old houses and walks were always so interesting. I now live in rural Saskatchewan 🇨🇦 and walk in nature which I also love
Great episode! I love seeing your process for creating a fade. My favorite of the three socks you knit is the pink/orange sock. I kind of want to make a variety of single faded socks and then mix and match them to wear😊
I LOVE your bangs! They make your eyes POP and look so beautiful!!
Just received your book The Sock Project! Absolutely stunning and just beautiful. So well written and perfect for what I need for reference. Thank you! Just discovered your channel and love it!. Big fan!
Oohhh, isn’t tomorrow LYS day? I must support them by getting some yarn to make these shortie socks! 😬
I love the ombre effect of these socks! Shorties are a great idea for summer. And I loved seeing your neighborhood! I had no idea there were such cute, tree-lined, historic neighborhoods in Oklahoma.
The faded socks are so gorgeous and I am so excited to try something new with my leftover sock yarn. Thank you, Summer! (And your hair looks adorable too)
I think the bangs are fun! Totally get the bangs taking over your life lol -- I've had them off and on and it took a long time to find a style that really works for me whether I style them or not.
Also, I love seeing all the pops of color in your home! It's so fun without feeling hard to live in. You have such a great eye for color across the board!
As a fellow bang regretter, I highly recommend headbands and little barrettes or clips to pull them off your forehead when they start driving you crazy. If you're able to take biotin supplements, they do seem to help hair grow faster. FWIW, they do look cute on you. 🙂
Just found your channel!!! - and your bangs look adorable on you!! Thanks for your insight re “everything socks”
Thank you for the inspiration and the faded socks pattern, how awesome! Your bangs look fabulous but being a curly girl I understand the regrets 😂
Love you and can’t wait to see you at Marie Green’s Knit Camp at the Coast! I got your book recently and took your class with Knit Stars🤩
And I love your bangs🥰
I go thru the same bang thing. They start growing out and I hate that process so I cut them again.
You look great!
OMGosh! I love the socks!!❤
1st, those shorties are so cute!!!! I'm working on my 1st shorties, knitting two at a time, and I got to the heel. Tried to try them on and couldn't get them over my heel. 😮😂 So, of course, I had to frog them. I don't know what happened. I tried to swap your twisted rib for a 2x2. Anyway, I cast the first one today.
2nd, try long bangs. I can't stand short bangs either but long bangs I love. Oh, and if you want to grow your bangs fast, massage your scalp. It helps blood flow, which increases keratin (lil cos tip😅). 3rd, your neighborhood looks awesome. Somehow, I imagined you living near a great plain (thumble weed and everything) 😂. Boy, how a person can me so wrong. Thanks for the pattern. I'll use it to ammend my shorties. Thanks so much for all you do. Hope you have a great weekend.
Hey Summer, saw the news about the tornado in OK. Hope you and your family are doing well.
Love the fades, love your bangs. Hate my bangs 🙄! I always learn from you each week. Thank you.
So stinkin cute!!!❤❤❤ Will give these a try! Just got your book!!!❤
Your neighborhood looks dreamy.
I've had bangs (and bangret!) The good thing is you can pull them back and pin them up at nearly any length, so if you hate yhe feeling of hair on your you can definitely change it right away. As for socks...this is my year of socks (though I started late) but I'm determined to get it down, hence I'll be buying your book and thanks for the pattern in the description... it'll help while I wait for the book to arrive 😁
Loved every fun moment!
I really like your bangs but I understand your feelings as I don’t like the maintenance either. I think that wearing contacts really shows your beautiful eyes. Thank you for pattern instruction and I just got my book last week and I’m soooo very excited ❤💗
Such helpful tips for color selection! Thank you
Oh, fantastic! Thank you so much for the pattern, also.
My book arrives today! Excited😊
Those are awesome! I love shorties! ❤
I am looking forward to seeing you at Flock this year, and don't you know, why then your bangs will be all grown out! (I think they look great, but i totally get if it doesn't feel right to you). Thanks again for the great podcast. Your Seasons pattern was the first pair of socks I ever knitted, and I am currently working on a pair of murmuration socks from your book!
Fabulous, as always ❤. Thank you 😊
Beautiful! Knit a matching companion to one and wear the other two as a mismatch set! The pink and greenish one would be a cute set.
Loved this episode…I have a lot of speckled fingering leftovers and am going to try these shorties!
I had bangs years ago, cute for a little bit then got annoying real fast. I too don’t like hair sweeping across my forehead.
Those fades 😍 Oh my daughters and I would wear holes in those socks!!!! Pulling out my sock yarn after dinner to make some parings.
I love these shoetie fades!! Thank you for the free pattern ❤ Ive taken to making shorties because I desperately need socks, I hate having my legs covered in warm weather, and I dont have the patience to make longer legs 😅 Once I have enough shorties I'll make some cold weather socks...someday. I have a box full of Opel's Van Gogh colorways and you can make a lot of shorties out of 1 skein of this yarn.
I’m definitely inspired to buy new yarn lol
I’ve never knit any kind of fade and have not had the desire to do so. I’ve seen so many fade projects done where the transition is less than seamless and it’s put me off to be honest. However it is you did these looks so good! Will be checking out your description of the method and breaking out my scraps.
I love your channel, bangs, book and the funtastic faded shorties! I’m older and totally understand the feral and fun phases 😂
Love the socks so much! I am getting my hair cut tomorrow and was going to give bangs another try. I think your hair looks cute!
I just bought your book and it's on the way to Uruguay right now!😂 Can't wait to get my hands on it!!❤
I would totally just mix and match those 3 shorties together as "pairs" to wear. If later you make coordinated "pairs" super, and if not--still cute and functional! I did the same at about early 40s and got Invisalign to straighten my teeth and this last year did "bangs." Still rolling with the bangs but trying different lengths, angling, etc. Good luck and I hope they treat you well! (Your eyes look amazing with contacts--thought I love the glasses frames you have!)
I love your bangs ❤❤, and I'm in love with your socks 😍
You should look up how to do a simple twist braid, when I wanted my bangs to be just over, I'd make the tiniest twist braid with them to the side and pin them back that way. Looks cute and gets "rid" of the bangs for the day. 💚 You're creativity is beautiful and inspiring, thank you for sharing!!
I’ve been making your shorties all month 🎉
Hi Summer your bangs look great but I totally get not wanting them! They’ll grow out before you know it. Love those faded socks:)
Fun video! I am going to try your fading technique. I knit the shorty socks all the time. How about a pattern on the shorty sock? Thanks for the tour of your neighborhood!
Good Morning Summer ... Love your shorty socks - Love all your socks. Thanks for the new pattern. I will put it in your sock book along with the Maize Sock pattern. I just started knitting in the Fall of 2023 so I do not have much stash yarn but I will try to improvise. Love your bangs. I also have wavy curly hair. I dry my hair using a diffuser and basically let it go natural.
OMG! I want to go buy speckled yarn 😂❤
My grandkids never wear matching socks. Appearently that’s the thing now
Your hair is cute. Looks like Molly Tuttle. New subscriber here and I've signed up for your newsletter.
LOVE your hair!!!!
You look really good in bangs! Also…I don’t think you need to knit the 2nd socks. This is a mix and match triplet 😊 sock set
I know the feeling of bangret… try using a round brush and blow dryer to curl them away from your face and they will blend into your hair more. That’s what I’ve been doing with mine. ❤
I am just finishing my second ever pair of socks and they are shorties!! I used guidance from your book and am just experimenting with length of cuff and leg. I am trying a shadow wrap heel this time. My first pair of socks I did heel flap and gusset. I must say I’m not a fan of picking up those stitches! Love the way it fits though. Oh well….onward!!!! It’s fun learning how to knit socks. I think I’m getting hooked!
I like your bangs, but I can surely understand the frustration of having a style you're not comfortable with! I LOVE the section where you describe how you fade/blend the variegated and speckled colorway yarns! Love the look around your neighborhood :) I hope you have time to knit the second socks someday, but for now I for one am really glad you took time to show us 3 different colorway options!! Very inspiring :)
😂The bangs rant, man I can relate to ALL of that! And I have done the bangs several times and ways and every time... Disaster 🤣 Thanks for the shorty fade recipe!! Love how these turned out and they look cute when you wear them mis-matched (so maybe you don't need to knit their pairs!)
Gorgeous socks, I love the green ones! 💚💚💚
Shorty socks are forever my favourite... I'm dashing off to examine my speckled yarn. Thank you so!
You are so amazing! I paused the video to leave this comment when I saw David in the upper right hand corner. 🤣
Your sense of humor … I love it!!!
Hi from south Australia. I love shortie socks, but it is coming into winter here
Oh Summer! The faded socks are amazing.
Went thru the hair over many yrs but finally now in senior phase , I won the fight & finally settled that with hair😂 your hair looks cute. Sock knitted, toe up, for 16 yrs but you convinced me to knit faded socks 😍 speckled stash here I come !
You are always so fun Summer! Love hanging out with you. LOVE the Schitts creek reference. The best. Whenever we have a conundrum my son and I will just tell each to “ fold it in” 😂
Hi I am new on your Chanel and I think you look great with bangs
