My top is Patons Kroy Socks. SUPER durable. Longest lasting socks for the fam have been from Kroy Socks.

I am knitting now with the Kroy. I find it much heavier than other sick yarns I have used. On us1 (2.25) needles, the fabric is very dense. That being said, if I can get through the full pair, they will be warm and hard wearing.

Some favourite Aussie Indie Dyers: for more muted colours Fluff and Nonsense, Passioned Flower, for bright colours Wool and Works, Maximoo Yarns, for brights and pastels Rainbows and Sprinkles, for self striping Heathermaid and Half Baked Hand Dyed

🤯 OMG - I have two half used skeins of JAWOLL in my stash (knitted a pair of childrens mittens years ago) and never knew there was reinforcement thread included. I just dug it out and checked and it is really there! It even sais so on the label. 😅 Blown away by this revelation!
    Thank you!
I live in Germany so Lang Yarn is easy to get and not all that expensive. I'm going to use it more often now. 😊

I’ve got your book on preorder and I love love love all these yarns and sample socks you’ve been showing us. I loved this video. I am a Montana girl, and am currently working on knitting from stash. I was lucky in that back in the mid 80's I was introduced to Mountain Colors yarn. The ladies of Mountain Colors were among the first independent yarn dyers, and continued to dye yarn until this past spring when they retired. They sold their business to a delightful lady in Great Falls, MT. She is beginning to sell the yarn, but you have to check yarn shops. My LYS carries her sock yarn, and I can't wait to knit with it. I also love Polka Dot Sheep out of Whitefish, Montana. Their yarns are beautiful, and they ship very quickly. Knit Picks has been my favorite work horse yarn, and I have a large stash of it. I love knitting socks, but also knit some 'lighter weight' hats and fingerless mitts out of sock yarn. I haven't doubled it to make DK or worsted weight socks, because I have an enormous stash of those yarns.

    • @shetlandlace
      @shetlandlace 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@summerleedesignco.6471 I hope you enjoy your virtual trip to Montana's yarn dyers. There are more than the ones I mentioned. The color names are fun, they reflect Montana places and geography. Mountain Colors is just getting restarted. I have purchased some of her sock yarn at my LYS. It is beautiful. Another one is Western Sky Knits. I haven't used her yarn, but it looks beautiful. There is also Farmer's Daughter Fibers, and Candace has a TH-cam podcast. I love her yarns, also. When I am buying yarns again--Tobacco Root Valley yarns are beautiful, and they dye soft single colored wools. The best way to find them is to Google Ranching Traditions Fibers. Happy exploring!

???? Summer, I need the best cotton yarn to knit socks. I am allergic to synthetics .. I can get by with Hedgehog with only 10 percent nylon ( my favorite indie dyer )
But need a good cotton yarn . It can have silk , bamboo wool, no rayon or tencel. Basically organic cotton yarn for socks that will hold up for decent wearing time.
I joined your cuff club and am testing out cotton pure from purl soho. Doesn’t come in fingering so doing sport.
Help if you have any good suggestions.

I love the Cascade Heritage and Hedgehog fibers yarn as well and order through Wool and Company regularly. Did you know Cascade has a cotton sox yarn? It's a 89% cotton with 11% nylon. I bought some red, white and blue for a pair of socks, but haven't made them yet. My first pair of socks I made was your broken rope pattern. I knit toe up, so I just did it opposite. I would like to get your DK Hibernal pattern, but not sure I can do it backwards? I enjoy your channel.

Hey! Thanks so much for sharing your favorites! I did want to caution you about Cascade Heritage Sock... I mentioned your favorites to a friend, and she showed me two pairs of socks that she knit with that yarn a couple of years ago. The yarn did NOT wear well. It felted easily, even on a delicate cycle in cold water, and the soles wore through quickly. She has made LOTS of socks, and hasn't had that problem with other yarns. Like you, she thought it was great to knit with, but it did not stand the test of actual use. Just wanted you to know.

I'm an Aussie, and definitely have some favourite local yarns to share.
For budget sock yarn you can't beat Bendigo woollen mills or Nundle woollen mills. Bendigo has colour shifting sock yarns that look like spincycle. They are a little like regia, but softer to touch.
Nundle does great solid colour sock yarn. It's thicker and softer than BWM.
My favourite indie dyers are Hodgepodge, the Aussie wool store, Skein yarn, and skein sisters. I'd love to try circus tonic too, that's on my list.

One of my favourite US indie dyers is Tippy Tree Yarns in Colorado! She has such wonderful colours, from tonals to speckles and variegated. She also frequently has special collections inspired by an artist, a movie or tv show, or an author. Just lovely! Here in Canada, I absolutely love Alley Cat Yarns who is local to me in Ottawa: so many bases, a lot of different breeds to explore, just fun and exciting! I also am in awe of the wonderful deconstructed fades of Shirley Brian Yarns. All her colours are spectacular but her fades are exquisite and I absolutely buy some of them just for their names 😊 inspired by books, quotes and movies. Just amazing!

I love Cascade sock yarn! They even have Heritage Prints which is such a fun way to get affordable striped/variegated skeins.

    Oh! Summer!
Thank you so much for this video. I'm fairly new to sock knitting and I'm kinda on a small budget these days.
I have tried a few different sock yarns from Michaels', JoAnn and Hobby Lobby. I've found that I'm a fan of Paton's Kroy Socks and Kroy Socks FX.
I'm really wanting to try the speckled yarns but, also want to try mixing things up color wise. So, I really do appreciate your opinions on sock yarns. Now, having heard your list of favorites and why they are your favorites; I think I'll be more comfortable when choosing my yarns in the future.
Summer, your channel has quickly become one of my very favorite go tos for knitting and hangin' out. Your socks are what come to my mind when I think of "happy feet."

Knit Picks Stroll - Woo! Lol its my favorite yarn across the board for basically any purpose. Ive made socks and sweaters with it and I will make many more. I also love Cascade Heritage in the same way - ive knit socks and sweaters and they are all lovely. I think I prefer the colors of Stroll overall, but I love the wear of Heritage.

My favorite sock yarns are Knitpicks Stroll and das Mondschaf in Germany. They have the best base and beautiful colors. It is worth the shipping from Europe!

I love the play on words of Jawoll. In German "jawohl" which is pronounced more or less the same means yes but a very emphatic/enthusiastic yes. The J has a Y sound.

I have a new yarn to check out!!! LOVE the colors you showed here.
My question is- I want to try toe up socks (just to mix up my sock life!) and feel intimidated because placing the heel seems trickier than top down. I prefer a short row heel, and wondered if you can talk about getting the heel at the right spot? Thank you so much!

Scheepjes Metropolis is another great sock yarn. It's a nice plump yarn in an incredible array of colours. I order it from Wool Warehouse - great low cost shipping to Canada (and I presume the US, too).

Hi Summer. With the HHF "Silence" yarn, do you use the sock base or the twist sock base? If you have used both, what do you recommend? Thanks so much. Love your channel, bought your book and a ton of Stroll yarn. Success from the start knitting socks with your patterns. On my third pair and totally hooked.

Hi Summer Lee! Really enjoyed your video! Wondering if you have worked with sock yarns that have no nylon and are not SW from the US. The only one I can seem to find is Woolly Mammoth Fiber Co in Ireland. I would love to buy Emma’s yarn but with shipping it’s a bit out of my price range. If there is a company that makes sock yarn naturally n the US I would love to know. Thanks so much!

Can you use different fingering weight yarns brands in one sock? All can be called fingering weight but they do not all have the same length in 100 grams.. does some one knows?

Hey Summer :) Greetings from Germany!
Lang Jawoll is definitely one of my favorite sock yarns and VERY affordable (4,95 € per skein in Germany).
Fun fact: The expression "Jawoll" is part of German colloquial speech and expresses some sort of affirmation/ consent (historically used as "Jawohl!" in military speech, close to "Yes, sir/ma'am!").
AND Lang Jawoll sock yarn is also a wordplay in itself: ja = yes, Wolle = wool/yarn, jawoll = Yes! Alright!
The first syllable "Ja" is pronounced like the "yu" in "yummy" and "woll" is pronounced like the "vol" in "volunteer".
    IPA [jaˈvɔl]
P.S. I'm very happy that you decided to revive your YT channel

As someone who studied German, I suspected Jawoll was a German play on words lost to us Americans! Very fun!

Hello dear Summer, I have a question, do you mix the wool from different companies when you knit a pair of socks?
Or do you always stick with one quality?
I'm so happy that you now have videos, I've been a fan of yours for a long time!
I love your beautiful socks, warm greetings from Astrid from La Palma (Canary Islands) 🌴

Do you notice a difference between 2 vs 4 ply fingering and is there a preference for different pattern uses? Secondary, any considerations for using both 2 and 4 ply within the same sock? Loved this video!

Some of my favourite Australian indie dyers are: Fluff and Nonsense, The Purl Box, Fibresmith, The Great Ocean Road Woollen Mill (not a dyer but their yarn is to dye for… pun intended) lovebird lane and obviously Bendigo woollen mill.
