I can't believe that all these years I've been knitting the wrong size. I got your book and I said to myself I know my size, I'm a medium. Turns out I'm a large! My first basic sock fits better already!! Thank you!!
I always throw mine through machine on delicate and hang dry. My husband used to have a laundry service at work and he kept brining home wire hangers so I bent a whole bunch into sock blockers for each size in our family so I always hang on those to dry when come out of Machine.
The only thing wrong with your videos is that I have to wait a whole week for the next one! You are spot on with all you teach. I’m doing the afterthought heel on my current pair of socks (from your book of course!).
I prefer taat toe up socks for many reasons. Try on as you go, a pair when done, no more SSS, no Kitchener toe to graft, give it a try, will never go back to cuff down.
Best tip for me was, knit tighter. Pay attention to tension to get 9 stitches per inch for more dense fabric and longer wearing socks! Very simple, yet game changing. No more floppy socks! Thanks so much.
Hey Summer, your socks are absolute eye candy!! Your basic sock video helped me check off an item on my lifetime bucket list- to knit my first pair! I’d also love to see a video about kids’ socks- I don’t know how to adapt a pattern for my daughter’s little feet. Thank you! 🎉
I just finished your I’m So Basic sock. My first ever sock. And I’m wearing them now. Turned out great. Well, not bad anyway. I have big old guy feet. I scaled your XL from 80 to 100 stitches. But I’m excited to try again.
I have been knitting lots of basic socks since I received your book. That really is a great tip! I have discovered that I like the fit better with a heel flap and gusset and I go back and forth between magic loop on one pair and 9 inch circulars on another. I also discovered that my tension is better when I knit English style, though I have been a continental knitter for years. My sock knitting has improved greatly. I am so grateful for your wisdom and instructions. Thank you ❤❤❤
Question: When your tension is too loose, why not just go down a needle size rather than pulling on the yarn? I ask for two reasons: 1. if you want to do colour work or fair isle, then you need to practice loose knitting and have less tension to avoid puckering 2. Needles are easier to change than hand memory. However, if there is a good reason to not do this, then I'm really keen to know. Loved the video loads of helpful info. I agree on the variegated yarns, something I was told early in knitting was "either you do the work or the yarn does" that is if you spend a lot of time on something complicated dont do it on very complicated yarn! It's been a handy tip.
I was wondering the EXACT SAME THING! I found that she answered this question in another comment. Basically Summer said that a lot of people tell her they struggle knitting with such small, size 1 needles, so she hesitates recommending they try even smaller size 0’s. This does make sense to me, and she is speaking to a large audience at varying levels of knitting experience, so I understand her not wanting to “muddy the waters” with too many variables. Who am I to argue with The Sock Expert? She knows her stuff! But, I will say that when have taught smaller knitting classes, I have given them both options for altering gauge…either change your tension, or change your needles. :-D
I have been knitting Continental (with the yarn in my left hand) for 20+ years and I find that my tension gets looser the longer I've been knitting. I struggle to get more than 6 stitches per inch without going down to a size 00 or smaller - which is not fun! I have found that switching to English style knitting, with the yarn in my right hand, is the only way I can get a good tension for socks.
I hear from so many knitters that using size 1 (2.25mm) needles is a struggle in terms of hand cramping! So I hesitate to advise using 0’s because that’s even tough for me! It was easier on my hands to adjust my tension, rather than trying to get used to even smaller needles!
❤❤❤I have been told to listen to you over and over.......till you qualify for m0an entry in my will! And they are right. I love your sock tutorials and have saved as many as you have made. Bought the book..........im 73.........you can not die befor me!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so glad this video was suggested to me! So cool the see the designer I've heard so much about 😊 and thank you for this really helpful video, can't wait for the next one ❤
Thank you for sharing these very important and useful tips, Summer. I am waiting for a back order of your book, in the meantime this is nice to have information. Have a wonderful and blessed weekend everyone!
Just got to tip #5 and I beg to differ so completely!! I am using the Tanis Fiber Arts Purewash Fingering weight yarn in Sprite, which is variegated, and it looks spectacularly more beautiful in a mock cable than when I knitted a vanilla sock in this same yarn. It was really dull, the variegation didn't pop at all, and I ended up frogging the sock. As a slow knitter, that was a significantly difficult choice to make, but I am SO, SO, SO glad that I did because the Hibernal Sock pattern really makes TFA's Sprite colorway pop.🤩
Thank you for the tips. This is helping me understand why my socks I made were too baggy on one pair and too tight on another. 🎉 I get it now. I was sure that I was a tight knitter but I am a loose one. 8 st per inch. Wow. Something I can work on.
lol I get 14 stitches per inch… yes I’m also an anxious person 😂 loving your book though all of the patterns are so beautiful and easy to follow! Thank you for putting it out!!
I wrote down all five of your tips. Your personal opinion on using variegated yarn is true. I love variegated anything, but like you said, when I do lace knitting it doesn't stand out that much in the pattern, now I understand why. Thanks
I have been knitting socks for years but you have helped me so much in understanding sock construction!! Love your videos. Can't wait to receive you book!!
This is so cool! I'm on my third pair of socks (in my whole life) and have discovered that I'm a tight knitter. I followed what Summer said to do and I measured exactly 10 stitches in 1" on my first pair of vanilla socks. Now, I'm knitting Summer's Hibernal Sock pattern, which I love, and it's very nice to know that I happened to choose the right size when I started. Yayyyy!
Love this vlog and every single one of your patterns! I’d really like to hear 1) your fave cast-on method and 2) how you make your ribbing look so tidy 😅
I completely agree with tip #1. I LOVE making socks and I have made 10?11? 12? pairs this year already. I am finishing a pair that was NOT a success but I learned a lot in the process of this one and feel confident even when I see something has gone wrong as I know now how to fix most things. STILL waiting for your book (Amazon is being super slack with shipment) so I can learn much more. Cannot wait! Love your designs and your enthusiasm, Summer. Thank you!!!
I ordered your book and it arrived today!!!!! I am going to follow your advice and start with the basic socks in the beginning of the book. You're right, too, basic doesn't have to be boring. Yarn choice will make a boring sock into a masterpiece. Thank you for a book that will be continually used. I can't wait to have a drawer full of beautiful socks!
Great tips I took your class in season 7 of Knit Stars and have knit about 20+ pairs of basic socks…. You are so right. My socks now are sooo much better than my first one. You are a great teacher. Thanks Ann
As someone who's been knitting basic socks for years (and have the sock drawer to prove it) I agree with all of that. Also, I could have sworn I was subscribed to you, but I guess I wasn't? But I am now!
I agree soo much with the variegated yarn tip. I finished the first sock with a lovely pattern and was so frustrated with the result, I had to rip it all out 😢 then I starter again, same yarn in a basic sock and wow! Much happier ;) Keep going with the videos, you bring so much joy to my sock knitting (even when things don’t go as you wish, the episodes on building a pattern are wonderful) 🧶🧶🧶
I so agree with everything! I have a question though, about tightening the tension: what’s your take on using smaller needles instead of making a conscious effort to knit tighter? Or doing both? Congratulations on your book, it is AMAZING. And can’t wait to watch the next video!
I've only been knitting socks for about 3 years, so whenever I see & hear someone talk about learning to knit socks & I can understand what you're talking about, I shut up & listen. I saw your book at Barnes n Noble (travel one hour to get to close one). I couldn't get it 😖. I want one NOW! LOL. I ordered the Kindle & started with chapter 3 as you talked about the basic sock today. I'm hooked, Sister! I laughed so much because I, as much as I try, cannot order anything else @ Olive Garden but the Fettuccine Alfredo! Thanks for a great book! Love watching you! GOD Bless!
Thanks for these awesome tips. I totally agree with number 5 . . . not good for a gorgeous pattern to compete with a variegated yarn. 'Love your style!
Lol...I've been in sock mode for about 30 years! Everybody I know wears socks I have knit! I even crochet bottoms and add Sock Stop for wool slippers! Character socks for kids, heavy socks for local fishermen...and everything in between! DPN, ankle down!
I love these tips Summer. I always thought I was a tighter knitter but just found out that when I’m knitting socks I’m a very loose knitter and that is probably why my socks never fit me. I got your book ( anxiously waiting for it now) and I can’t wait to check all the tips you have there ❤
P.S. You are so right about tension!!! I am a loose knitter and have had to go down sizes, cast on fewer stitches and use smaller needles (the dreaded size 0) to get a neater sock with better tension. I now will make a serious effort to pull the yarn tighter on each stitch to see if I can become a tighter tension knitter. Again, thanks for the tip, Summer!
Great tips. I finished the 1st bonus pattern of the colorwork cuff socks. I love them. I cast on first the flower pattern using a different yarn. First pair was knit in size M using Malabrigo sock yarn. Second pattern, I used Patons Kroy yarn. It is so tight I can barely get it on my foot. I think I will put that sick in time out and try again using some drops Fabel yarn I have on hand. I think the Kroy yarn is heavier than a light fingering.
Just measured. I’m getting 9 inches per inch. Yay. I had the opposite problem when I first started knitting socks. I knitting extremely tight. And I loosened up over time :)
I have gotten looser over time as well. I’ve noticed the last couple of socks I knit for my self fit looser than my older socks. I really don’t want to go down to a size 0 needle so I will need to make a conscious effort to tighten up while knitting socks.
Absolutely! I already knit with size 1’s, so for me going smaller would be really hard on my hands. I prefer adjusting my tension since I’m already knitting on such small needles!
What a fantastic video! I probably should check my gauge again for socks because I know my gauge has gotten loose lately but sadly it’s because if I knit tighter, I cramp my hands and wrists so I’ve been progressively loosening my tension I do love the tip about maybe knitting a smaller size! That would allow me to keep knitting loosely, protect my hands and have socks that fit! 😊 Also I got your fantastic book on kindle and I’m waiting for the hard copy to be available again because it’s so darn beautiful I need it for my bookshelf of knitting books!
It’s interesting about the stitches per inch. I’m a tight knitter especially with small circumference. I like 9” circulars for socks. I’ve noticed that most sock patterns are written for 8 stitches per inch and I always have at least 9 stitches or more per inch with a larger needle than the pattern calls for. I’ve always thought that I have to go up another needle size. I guess I don’t since they will be more durable. I also have narrow feet and ankles so the tighter gauge works in my favor. My favorite recipe I’ve determined over the years: toe up, Turkish CO, my own rounded toe pattern, mini gusset on the instep with a FLK heel and a stretchy bind off!
I am loving your book!! I told ever in my sock knitting group on FB to go get your book! Thank you thank you thank you so much for helping me be a better sock knitter.
Loved these hints! I agree with you on tip 5. I remember being taught many years ago that you have to choose what you want to emphasize in any knitting project. If you have cables or lace use a plain yarn. If you don't have any particular pattern in the knit project--use a variegated yarn. So nice to hear you confirm that. As a pattern buyer-nothing is more irritating that have a designer's pattern knit in a yarn that hides the pattern. How do I know if I want that pattern if I can't see the stitch pattern in the socks?
I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos and learning a lot about socks! (As I sit here with a brand new finished pair of UNBLOCKED socks on!! 😂😂) gotta order your book right now…❤
I’ve noticed a lot of sock patterns call for a gauge of 8 sts/inch. But I really prefer the look and feel of 9-10 sts/inch! The socks where I did that (with size 0 needles) don’t get as saggy 🙂
I love your podcast , you gave me best advice tip number 1 every time I knit a new sock I learn something new. I wish I could get a book on pre order everywhere looking for it any tip on where I can find one . When are they coming out again thanks
I'm so excited to get your book. I pre ordered on February 11 th, but I will not get it until April ( according to Amazon). I'm looking forward to perfecting my sock knitting.
Love everything about your podcast & have learned so much. I’m still working on my tension. When I put my sock, on how much fabric should I be able to grasp on my foot? Some? None? Haven’t quite found my ‘Goldilocks’ size = Knit. More. SOCKS! 😊
I just found your channel and subscribed. Your socks are so beautiful, and I love knitting socks. Can I block socks that have already been washed and dried? I know I have a blocker somewhere, just need to find it.
Thank you for this video. Wondering if you might have an update on your book shipment to Amazon. I ordered your book February 3 through your link. Amazon tells me there is a supply chain issue. I remember you saying the first run had sold out and second run would be in March. Just anxious to get your beautiful book. Thank you Summer.🙂
Hi Summer, since I live in the UK, I can't get your paper book until May, so, being impatient for it, I bought your book on Kindle. And it's lovely, except that I miss a list of what your abbreviations mean! There are things I just cannot work out at all, in spite of being reasonably intelligent and not a new knitter. Although I am new to knitting socks! Could you please create a PDF with a list of the meanings of your abbreviations? That would make me so happy, because then I could actually start using your book, rather than just being able to look at the pretty sock patterns!
I look forward to getting your book! Any idea when Amazon will get it back in stock? I ordered it February 2nd and I'm still waiting for an email as to when it will be available.
Hi Summer…I absolutely love your podcast. Congratulations on the new release of your outstanding book. I have a question…I’m a left handed person who wants to knit socks. Is there anything I should know that is different from doing it right handed? Which would be the front and the back of the sock? I’ve watched only right handed sock knitting because there are no left handed versions. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Have an awesome weekend.
I can't believe that all these years I've been knitting the wrong size. I got your book and I said to myself I know my size, I'm a medium. Turns out I'm a large! My first basic sock fits better already!! Thank you!!
I found out that I’m a small! I always thought 56 stitches around would be too small, but found out my socks fit perfectly now :)
I always throw mine through machine on delicate and hang dry. My husband used to have a laundry service at work and he kept brining home wire hangers so I bent a whole bunch into sock blockers for each size in our family so I always hang on those to dry when come out of Machine.
Thank you for this!
lovely idea!

i had to go down a needle size, this was the easiest way to knit tighter LOL.
Is it necessary to knit tighter by pulling the yarn tightly? Or can one gobdown a needle size to get smaller stitches? Does anyone know?😊
That is an option if you are able to use a smaller needle without suffering hand pain 😃
Hey Summer, your socks are absolute eye candy!! Your basic sock video helped me check off an item on my lifetime bucket list- to knit my first pair! I’d also love to see a video about kids’ socks- I don’t know how to adapt a pattern for my daughter’s little feet. Thank you! 🎉
I need the same thing!

😬🧶🪡🪡 : Me wondering where my anxiety is at, knitting at 11 stitches per inch.
I have been knitting lots of basic socks since I received your book. That really is a great tip! I have discovered that I like the fit better with a heel flap and gusset and I go back and forth between magic loop on one pair and 9 inch circulars on another. 😂 as soon as you said tight knitted and anxiety my mind said yup 9-10st/inch as you were saying it. Same girl, same ❤

When you see how many stitches you get per inch does that mean with a certain size needle?
So helpful! I've knit hundreds of socks but I'm eager to improve my skills. Your tips are excellent. Thank you.

Eagerly waiting the book to be available in the UK! Thanks for another great video 😊
Love your book and your relatability ! thank you so much for sharing your sock knitting knowledge!

I’m a new knitter and this is intimidating. Hopefully I’ll knit socks someday.
When talking about tightening up your tension, can you just use a smaller needle?

I'm so excited to get your book. I pre ordered on February 11 th, but I will not get it until April ( according to Amazon). I'm looking forward to perfecting my sock knitting.
Great book! !! Love it.
Do you find that using a sock blocker stretches the cuff out too much?
Thanks summer…this is so great!! ❤ xx
Thank you for the tips Summer! ❤️ Do you have any tips for weaving in ends as you go in 2x2 ribbing?
Thanks for the tips :). I enjoyed the podcast!
Does your book include formulas for toe-up socks too?
I live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. Your book seems to be out of stock everywhere 😢 I really hope that there will be a reprint soon!
Great tips! Thank you so much!
I just got your new book and love every patterns! Spending this summer making every one! ❤🧶🧦
Do you have to use a special wool wash? Would something gentle like Dr Bronner's baby liquid soap (unscented) be okay? Love your tips!
Love your laugh😂
I have watched your video and learned to knit on a magic loop. I love it, but- I’m getting laddering on each end. How can I avoid it?
Great tips🧶 Thank you. BTW, Amazon won’t be shipping your book to me until April 🫤🫤
Thank you so much. Great, great tips.
Very informative- thank you!
Thank you Thank you❤
I look forward to getting your book! Any idea when Amazon will get it back in stock? I ordered it February 2nd and I'm still waiting for an email as to when it will be available.
Thanks for all your tips. 😊
Loved the video... thank you!
Have an awesome weekend.
thank you for your videos. I love them. I love your book too
Great video! Thanks, I will definitely try these tricks. ❤
You are so welcome!
Excellent video. I learned a lot.
