    Thank You, Norman ~ you've done it again! Masterfully explaining and showing us how to do the impossible and make it fun and easy, too! I finished my knee-high 2-at-a-time toe-up boot socks and wow are they warm, they fit perfectly, and I thank you for your tutorials which gave courage, hope and ability. You are a fabulous teacher. Mind blown! I DEFINITELY would love a deeper dive into this going a bit slower in the comparisons to really grapple with it, and of course I will make a swatch to try this out for myself. I happen to be a thrower but that should not change anything. Thank you so much. Nobody before you has presented this, to my knowledge.

      Glad to hear my videos sitll work for you. But hey, I do watch quite a lot of English videos as well and if you just focus on the stitch and blend out the tensioning fingers, I feel it works very well!

    I'm addicted to your videos! I learned so much; you explain everything so well, so calmly. Well, surely, I am still a beginner, but I was so proud when I finished my first scarf and my first headband. Yes, they are not perfect, I can see the flaws, but it's fine. I realize that great work comes in time, with experience, with lots of practice. So, just thank you, Norman. Vielen Dank! :-)

      Let Me Tell You From Years Of Perfectionist Torment... You're The Only One Who Notices The Flaws. Even Other Knitters Don't Tend To "Knitpick" Your Items 😅 But Just Like Our Bodies, We See A Supernaturally Enlarged Problem Where Only A Triviality Exists. Keep On, You'll Do Great Things.

    • @NimbleNeedles

      @@StarfireReborn let me tune in on this and strongly disagree here. I hear this theme so often and it can be very hurtful. Not all brains work the same. Some see the large picture, others focus on the details (especially ppl on the autism spectrum, etc). And for these, these flaws can be a big problem and it's very important to recognize them and not tell them they don't exist or it's fine. It often is not and it's nothing you can (or should) fix with therapy or nice words. I know, you mean well and I thank you for this. But do be careful with that and word in a way it's inclusive.

      Yes, if you dont fix your mistakes and learn how to fix them. You'll never progress to a better knitter. I taught some of my grandkids to knit and made them correct the mistakes so they could learn from them. Good lesson to learn for life's mistakes too. 😊

    Absolutely the best demo on short rows I’ve ever seen. I’ve been knitting for 53 years, and a few years ago I also adjusted how I do my German short rows to avoid twisted stitches in exactly the same way you have done. I’m an American living in the state of Nevada near Lake Tahoe. Congratulations for having solved a pesky knitting problem and congratulations on making an excellent video!

    Very interesting. Might have to watch a few times to get my head round this one but very happy to do that.
    It would be interesting to have a video about when to use different types of short rows and the difference in appearance on the finished item.
    I tend to do German or wrap and turn short rows but am never sure what gives the neatest/smoothest looking finish.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well, i'll see what I can do. But the thing is, and I hope the last section of this video prooved that, it depends a bit on how close you space them. So one method might look nice for a heel but not all that nice for a shawl, etc. So, i'm saying: don't think of it as THE neatest...rather neatest in this case for you :)

    11:30 Timestamp for balanced stitches
    I found that it is more about knits and purls than right or wrong side. I am making a top that has both knits and purls in a row so I had to use both methods on both sides.
    I found that after turning the work, if the stitch that is to be the double stitch is a knit (on that side), slip knitwise, and if it is purl, slip purlwise. Use the appropriate decrease when resolving them. This is what gave me the best results.
    Thanks for the video Norman! All of your videos are brilliant but this one especially was so useful and kind of revolutionary to be honest 😂

    So to recap, for a neater heel do knitwise double stitch on the purl side witch will be resolved by purling in front loop and purlwise double stitch on the knit side witch will be resolved by knitting in back loop. This way it twists the stitches and give the fold of a heel a better shape. I tried it and eureka 😊 no holes. I've been waiting for so long to get perfect turned heels. As you mentioned in the video, this new way to do German short rows will not replace to traditional way, but it t may be useful to solve problems along the way. After all, knitting patterns, yarns and techniques continue to evolve, so depending what we are knitting and what we are using, the technique could be very useful. Hi Norman. This is a very interesting video tutorial. You really explain everything so well. I’ve only done GSR’s the typical way, slipping as if to purl. Now you’ve opened up new and amazing possibilities! I think a swatch is a great idea. I’d love to see a video on all types of short rows. I’m sure it would be fascinating! Could you make a video demonstrating this technique using mirror knitting? ( AKA backwards knitting) I hate having to turn my work for things like short rows
    or bobbles or intarsia ( especially if knitting in the round) but I can’t figure out which way to slip my stitches

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hm..well I personally never do mirror knitting (except for bobbles) as it's a) not neater for me and b) i rarely knit easy pattern so it's just not feasible. Besides, also a lot slower.
      But in this case..i mean..slip the stitch point to point and pull down to the front instead of the back. Should be easy? (I don't think I have the time to record a video for that. sorry)

    Thank you for this! Your instructions are very clear - though I'm having a very difficult time making those double stitches/loops. Presumably I'll improve with practice, but right now my short row knitting is a total mess. ;) So I'm wondering, why should we add stitches this way instead of using another method like KLL, KRL, M1R, etc. - and then knitting the pairs together in the same way?

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว

      well, if you look up the shadow wrap short row method and a couple of others, you will see that they do use techniques similar to lifted increases.
      So, it boils down to preferences and circumstances. In this video I already showed you that it really depends on where you want to use them.

    The Maestro! 😊. Could someone please explain to me the purpose of the double stitch? I could understand if one was making increases but these are created and decreased but, to me, it seems illogical. 🤔 Many thanks.

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      actually if you think of increases and decreases you are not even half wrong. Technically speaking it's a bit different BUT...if you just turn around without a special technique, you'd create a visible hole or gap. So think of the double stitch as an increase that fills that gap. But since you actually do not want to increase your stitch count, you decrease it in the next row.

    Fascinating and I will have to try German short rows again. I switched to shadow wrap or twin stitches because either side of my heel looks the same with that method and it seemed easier to me. Now I know why the German short rows can look different. Such a simple change to get a neater look. Thanks again for your videos.!

    • @NimbleNeedles
      @NimbleNeedles  ปีที่แล้ว

Knitting through the back loop seems to twist it, but knitting it normal leaves an odd purl-looking bump and looks mis-shapen?

So elegant but is it just different ways of achieving short rows?

    • @NimbleNeedles

      wrap and turns are quite different. i mean, it's another short row technique (albeit 1 stitch removed). But it's technically and visually different.

    I found this same thing when I was knitting a cardigan several years ago!! I was doing short rows in pattern, though, so I thought it was just the fact that I was doing seed stitch, and so had purl and knit stitches on both back and front. I ended up purling some stitches through the back loop (tricky but doable), knitting some through the back loop and knitting / purling the normal way some stitches to get them to come out untwisted, depending on what the underlying stitch was (ie. knit or purl). I don't remember pulling stitches to the front, but it all did work out. German short rows were the only short row method I could find that really worked for non-stockinette fabric.

    Hey Norman thank you for this tutorial I have a question with going back and adding the Stitches(dbl stitches) the second part of the short rows are we then also doing knitwise the purls and purling the knits when we do the second part or is it just slipping purlwise for all when adding back the dbl stitches?
