I got some 100% nylon yarn from grandma to reinforce the heels of my socks. I hold my sockyarn together with the nylon for the heel turn.

@@earlgreyknits1178I feel like this technique is really commonly used in Germany! A few German sock yarns actually come with an extra tiny “skein” of nylon in the exact same colour for this exact reason :)
@@einfach_lou9321 I'm from Germany. But I've never seen those sold together. I've only ever seen the nylon sold as "Beilaufgarn" or "Stopfgarn" separately. I just try to color match as closely as I can with what I have.
Could you tell me where I can find the sockyarn sold with nylon?
I live in the US and I’ve used this nylon to reinforce socks for years. It’s called “woolly nylon” it’s quite thin so just getting the color close works well for it to not be noticeable, also it’s very stretchy and has tons of yardage. It lasts forever because I only put it on the bottom of the heel and the bottom of the ball of the foot. One light color (I like a light tan) and one darker color (a darker gray) will be the only two colors you should need.
Me too..I've done that for many years now...I also join nylon at the toe decrease
i pretty much exclusively use the small 9 inch circulars for my socks and i use a short row heel and toe (and kitchener to close the toe) , which means i can do the whole sock on just the circulars! its the fastest method for me and just wanted to share that it's possible :)
Ok this is good to know because I love using 9 inch circulars but I switch to magic loop for the toes and end up putting in an after thought heel. Do you have any tips while using b the 9” circs?

New subscriber here. My friend wants to learn how to knit socks and I was looking for a good summary for her. I have been knitting socks for over 40 years and tried lots of different methods/toes/heels etc. Your summary is very comprehensive, well done! If/when you do a video on darning/mending do mention that you can pick up the stitches, cut away the toe and knit a whole new one. I do this for heels too and find surgery is easiest performed on an after thought heel. Well done, Florence.
that’s really smart, what a great piece of advice! although I think i wear through my sock heels quite high up, so i’m not sure it would line up with the part I would knit as an afterthought heel

Even though I’ve been knitting socks for a couple of years, I really appreciated hearing your opinions on all things socks, I just wanted to add my two cents and say that I recently discovered that the Italian sewn bind off is a beautiful, bind off and stretchy for toe up socks.
interesting! I use italian bind off for almost everything apart from socks, because I never thought it was stretchy enough, but perhaps i’ll give it a go!!

I'm just getting into knitting two at a time as I struggle with second sock syndrome so badly! It's a totally different beast but I'm so excited to get a whole pair done at once!
So do I. I knit usual socks from toe up both at once at 100 cm cable needles. I like to add leftover mohair to winter socks.
Me too, if I have to knit socks once again, I’ll only knit it toe up as it’s the easiest and I usually knit it two at the same time. I figure that out on my own a long time ago, almost 18 years ago and now there’s tutorial on TH-cam about it.
This was fantastic, there was so much great information, I actually watched it twice to take it all in. I think with knitting there is more assumed knowledge than with other yarn crafts, so it can be quite daunting as even an intermediate knitter that I would class myself.
Please make this deep dive into sock making with as much info as you can, we sure appreciate it!!!!!

Personally I love tiny circular needles bc I've lost a few dpns in public transportation but if I'm knitting at home I'll stick to my usual dpns set
I like the Russian or elastic bind off for my toe up socks! I didn’t like the untidiness that the JSSO had and this gives me plenty of stretch (I also have bigger feet). Agree on flap and gusset as my preferred fit too!
I always use DPNs, but I find they’re harder to comfortably take with me. If I’m not careful, sometimes a needle even slips out. I have the opposite of ladders when I use a magic loop method. There’s always a line of some sort because I pulled the yarn too tightly. Not sure if anyone else have ever had this problem lol

For DPN's, I used to use two hair ties looped around either side to keep them together. 😅 They also make two caps held together by an elastic if that's more so what you're looking for!
I don’t have that problem, but one of the books I have mentions it.

I increase in the foot before doing a short row heel (like you would heel flap,but not as much) and the extra stitches either get added in like a bit of the heel flap/gusset one or as increase stitches for the leg when working toe up
Toe-up is my favorite method, although I’ll knit cuff-down also. For toe-up, I have found an Interlock BO works beautifully. No flare and very stretchy. The Chilly Dog tutorials are on YT, as well as many others. Thanks for your videos! I often sit and knit while enjoying them :)

So true what you mentioned on trying different patterns and colors on your socks that you would never consider for a full sweater 😊. I'm the same, classic and minimal in my style but totally okay to wear slightly more elaborate socks
I would be interested to hear your opinion on gauge. The ball band says 30 sts per 10 cm, but patterns usuall call for 32 or even 36 sts per 10 cm

In Sweden we call hard wearing knitted socks raggsockor. This is because they were traditionally made with yarn spun from wool and goats hair (ragg) for extra durability. I have been wanting to try sock yarn with some goat hair content but they are difficult to find

I love using tiny circulars when traveling (especially for work)!
My usual travel project is a sock with an afterthought heel so that I can just work in the round until I’m satisfied with the total length and then just transfer them to my magic loop needles and continue with the second one!
I struggled with pain in the beginning but then loosened up how tightly I hold my yarn and it made it a lot easier and pain free for me
that makes a lot of sense!! perhaps that’s why I don’t love it; I rarely knit afterthought heels so I don’t get that benefit

Motion sickness in the car is a real pain when you have to look down at what you are doing while knitting so afterthought heels were the only option during that time 😂

Hi Florence, I've been watching your podcasts for a while and really enjoy them. I am planning to knit my first pair of socks soon. You covered so much here but on washing, I recently bought some commercial high end cream alpaca socks and decided to practice hand washing. But the soles were dirty (our floors aren't that dirty but still!) and eucalan didn't cut it. I know they are technically clean but they don't look it. This has put me off learning to hand knit socks. Do you have any thoughts on this (other than maybe clean my floors more 🫣) Thank you! Peppi

I'm not crazy about the heel flap and gusset and I found the flegle heel was similar and didn't have the seam on the inside where you pick up your stitches

I have a pair of socks knitted on 2.5mm needles in Nord and they’ve been worn so much! They’ve felted a bit but no sign of wearing through any time soon, if that’s at all reassuring :)
I used to prefer toe up sock knitting, but just like you I found the bind-offs inadequate! I also completely agree about short rows heels, I enjoy knitting them but not wearing them 😂
yes they look so pretty too!! but the resulting sock never fits me *quite* right
I know I probably sound like a crazy person but I knit my socks exclusively in Holst Supersoft (one cake makes a pair with some left over) and it works really well for me! I’ve also tried 100% cotton and again it’s great

@@handmadebyflorence to be fair I work an office job, however I do go hiking and I’ve worn them while doing so and they hold up! I just use a thick ribbing and I think that’s what keeps them up
I’ve got dk hadfield acrylic yarn,do you recommend this?A concern of mine is that because it’s acrylic they might make for socks that smell after relatively little time worn in shoes😂Maybe if I add a wool mix into it as I knit…what do you think?
Thanks for this great video Florence :) I learned how to knit by doing socks and have gotten away from them over the past few years. I learned on dpns but the laddering bothers me now, how do you avoid ladders with magic loop? I feel like short circulars are my only option but ouch!
I tighten the yarn on the first and second stitch of each side, especially the first stitch.
I loved this video, it has so much great information in it and really put me into the sock knitting mood😍❤ I have one last question though: how do you store your socks? Do you keep them in your closet in the box you showed in the video?
I keep them in a box! I don’t want to mix them up with my clothing which could end up going through the wash because i’m scared of felting them lol

yes, I showed a couple in the video!! although the ones i’ve tried haven’t been nearly as strong as nylon sock yarn

the chunkiest socks i’ve knitted are the petiteknit sunday socks! they’re worsted weight on (if I remember correctly) 4mm needles
People have lost the art of darning! Lol...I've lost count of the number of socks I've knit. And the number that people have brought back for me to darn! Lol!
there’s a terrible part of me which really enjoys wearing holes in socks because the process of darning them invisibly is so satisfying for me! since I have already made myself so many socks i’m moving on to gifting them now and i’m hoping I get many to darn 🧦😌
