    The Blackadder grew progressively smarter as his character fell lower and lower in status with each series. Genius.

      Nah, he was smart from season 2 onwards. It just fit the stories much better than the Mr. Bean like personality he was in season 1.

    • @OldManMontgomery
      @OldManMontgomery 2 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@oooBASTIooo I certainly agree The Blackadder was a much more entertaining and watchable character than Mr. Bean. But then, I don't find incompetence and nasty to be humorous. I still remember his intellect growing from series to series. But he was at the nadir in the first season.

      I believe the reason was supposed to be because of the witches in the very first episode, it was supposed to be a curse, the reason that E.Blackadder was supposed to be constantly reincarnated.

    It was GENIUS writing to get Fry to reprise the role as Melchett... A PERFECT example of the bumbling, incompent and totally detached from reality type of commanders in charge of that awful war.
    Grumbling, old, upper class monsters who had NO idea that warfare had changed. Who would shoot a completely psychologically destroyed 'Tommy' with shell shock for 'cowardice and bad form'.
    Who would be 35km from the front in a very luxurious office with valets and who would get furious because the troops wouldn't happily run towards the 'Hun' with their machine guns. Who were ravaged by disease and stuck in the mud and cold and swarms of lice and rats...the blustery old Melchett and his type would be wondering why they haven't advanced... 'no fighting spirit' probably the answer...
    The phrase 'Lions led by Donkeys' rings very true.
    Mechanized warfare with the horrors of chemical weapons, machine guns and incredibly vast amounts of artillery and these 'leaders' expected it to be over before Christmas.
    Melchett is the PERFECT personification of that type.

      Haig was not really a bad general. He was probably a bit above the average. He was modernist, to his credit, and remember he managed to hold down the job far longer than French did. His main flaw was the fact strategy and tactics had not caught up with the state of warfare. However this was true for everyone. It was not until 1918 that this changed much, on both sides. And in this, Haig played a large part in inventing combined arms warfare, which was the basis for so called 'blitzkreig'.
      Furthermore more he was actually reasonably popular with troops, there are many indications he was affected by their sacrifice rather than a 'callous butcher'. It's only in the 1950's and later that revisionist history started to perceive him and British officers generally as incompetent buffoons, whilst the Germans were incredible (bear in mind the German commanders at the Somme literally had their base of operations in a Chateau. This stereotype was just as true for them as anyone else, perhaps more so).

    Hardly ever mentioned is Rowans portrayal of the fictional French Detective Jules Maigret for I believe just four episodes, Brilliant for those of us who go back many decades, again with this character, he has the mannerisms etc spot on.

      It proved what a really great actor he is, watching him as Maigret I forgot all about his role as Blackadder.
