The 11th bike shown was my husbands. He built it in 69 then went all around the U.S on it. He freaked when he saw the picture of it. He's talked about it many times over the years. He lost pictures of the bike and was so glad to see it. He will be 70 in February and still rides. I've often said my husband is the persona of the saying "ride to live, live to ride" . His health isn't the greatest these days but he's still always tinkering away in the garage or working on friends bikes. Thankyou for the picture!

I often wonder where these people are now, If they are alive still. I was born in the late 50s so I was a bit young during the 70s, but god it looks like they had so much fun. The 70s seemed such a kool time to be kicking around. I feel sorry for the young ones today, so many rules, Our generation had the best time. Thanks for posting the pics and good sounds too.

I was just a kid during these times, but i remember them. I feel sorry for the kids today too, we had a lot of fun and not many rules, stayed outside till dark riding our bicycles, made rafts and floated the lake, fished, and had fun. Now you can,t even blink without needing some stupid permit or some other control mechanism.

I was one of them. In the late 60's I rode a 650cc BSA I chopped. I started riding in 1958 in FL on a Harley light weight 125cc at 14 years old. Back then you could get a learners permit that allowed you to ride a motor cycle. I'm almost 73 now and ride an 04 Harley Low Rider.

We built these in our basements or garages, & backyards. No fancy tools or computer programs, just a hacksaw , a torch if a friend had one, shit I did some nice paint with spray cans. LOL Had to send parts out to be chromed, couldn't buy a lot of custom parts, they had to be made . It was fun & you could build a bike for a couple grand.. not 30K

I bought my first Harley when I was 19 in 1975. It is a 1952 flathead Harley trike that was built by the vice president of the iron horseman MC in Cincinnati. I still have the bike and still ride, yes the seventies were very different than today. I also have a 91 fat boy that Peter Fonda rode during Daytona's bike week of 1991. Great pictures and memories.

To me these are real bikes my style i don't knock anyone for riding whatever bike or brand the late 60s up to mid 70s was the time for this culture to really hit the streets and now its gone not the culture so much but sadly it is slowly coming to an end and a new one will take of its us old farts who are in our 60s and upwards that only knows those times because we were there my generation, today many young people try to bring it back and they are doing a great job but its there way in 30 years time they will be saying the same thing to the young ones then. Sadly time does not stand still its old vids and pics that bring back the memories for me and this video did just that i made my bike that i ride to this day and i'm nearly 65 into an image of those bikes and i love it my way of keeping my past alive i don't live in the past we have to move on but to all of us the past is all we know as we cannot experience next week keep rocking mother fuckers rock on

Nostalgia, that's all. (I'm 58.) You can have any of those bikes today the same way you could have one then, by building them, and it's far easier now. Shovelheads are easy to find at reasonable prices, Ironheads are cheap (for good reason, get a Shovel instead!), and instead of fucking about ordering through a local shop which had to order enough parts for a minimum order you can get damn near anything with a few mouse clicks. Panheads are getting expensive but you can still find engines and on a chopper the rest may as well be improved aftermarket. Now go for a ride!

Some of these bikes were stupid and dangerous. I sold my 67 sporster to a guy around 71 or so with an extended front end and some
beautiful wheels that I bought in California. He called me one night to say that the rear wheel which had 5 diamond shaped spokes
had broken off at the spool, as he left a traffic light. Lucky he wasn’t hurt, and damage to the bike was minimal. Another time, we
pulled in for gas off the highway after riding in a tight pack of more than thirty bikes, back around the same time. One of the guys had a K model that was beautiful with a raked and extended front end. The welds failed at the pump, and the bike collapsed onto its frame tubes.
Could have killed some of us had it happened at speed, twenty minutes earlier. Some of the work was well done, some not. Same went for the limited selection of after market parts vendors who were rushing into the chopper market. Some were beautiful, but better to look at than ride at high speed. Many a passenger fell victim to sissy bars that broke as well. I do recall when one of our guys lost a girl off the back, taking off from a light fast. She wasn’t hurt, but the tail light caught and ripped her short pants right off. You could not have scripted it better, lol.

Ah yes, A.E.E. inspired bikes. No saddle bags. No Bluetooth. No cell phone. No GPS. Candy Apple paint. Lots of Chrome extended forks and hardtail

Love this video but one complaint. Wish I could play it twice as slow so I could look at each picture longer!!! I have two Dressers and now I want to cut up my ol' Shovel and make it into a vintage chopper. Thanks a lot

I guess a front brake is just an option for a chopper. Don't know if I like that feature, cool bikes though.

Front drums were garbage (road race Fontanas etc somewhat excepted) and early HD discs were deliberately weak from the factory because idiots thought if you overbraked a 600lb motorcycle you'd do an endo, so a spool hub wasn't too much of a drawback relative to the alternatives. Those wanting discs could turn their own and use Hurst-Airheart or Lockheed calipers (both styles are still available).

Most choppers didn't have front brakes, or front fenders, speedo, tach, horn ,or mufflers. I used 1 small mirror. had a pair of muffled pipes to put on when I had to take it to inspection after getting a ticket. then back to straight pipes. I once used a chrome stingray bicycle fender as my front fender. small enough to just pass the fender law. LOL

I loved these, when they showed up in the pages of the early "Street Chopper" magazine. Now days, I realize that some of those "traditional styling cues" look kinda ridiculous (like the ultra-long front ends) or just downright oogly, like "king and queen seats." Still love choppers (though not the "modern" variants, I must confess) and IMHO, the "Capt. America" and "Billy" bikes represent the epitome of chopper perfection.

could not make a U turn to slow a ride to hard to control a chopper, to bouncy and now we must go on long rides for club meeting across the Country. they just cannot be used for what a club needs.. FXR is the way to go for in town riding ... and a touring Harley style for long rides . like road king or a road glide is a great choice for some ... but that new Low Rider Harley is my next ride of choice ... got a FXR and 2019 King now ,,, but i am getting that low rider next year...
