The original is similar but well worth a listen; just hear that his voice hadn't lost the power he had when almost 50 years younger. It's such a magical and haunting sounding song up there with the best.
Gary was 22 years old when Procol Harum first did this song in 1967, and had a good voice then. He was 61 in this performance and was in great voice. Gary took care of the pipes as he aged. This is the best performance of this masterpiece that will ever be done. Gary may be gone now, but he will always live on through his music.
I'm not 60 yet.... and I'm beginning to realize why people are so amazed when an older person nails it like this... range.. less... volume.. less... sigh. course, I'm not near his caliber, but still, saddened by the loss of what I did have.
I was 12 years old when this song released, 1967. It shook me then and continues to do so, today. I think the organ piece is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. It never fails to give me gooseflesh! There is nothing like the sound of the Hammond Organ. The lead singer, Gary Brooker, was 22 years old when this song released and was 61 at the time of this video. He passed away in 2022. His voice was one-of-a-kind and instantly recognizable. Rest In Peace, Gary.
Same. I remember it from 6th grade. Music had a different affect on our growing minds and bodies then. It responded to our hormones... it answered questions. Thank God for the music of the 60s/70s.
John Lennon upon hearing this on a recording in his limo had the driver ride around London for hours just listening to the song over and over. I love great poetic lyric and this song feels important and deep but, I still have no idea what it means but, I couldn’t care less.
Desolate, no doubt. Music is exactly what we all need. Now more than ever. I find it kind of ironic the music which really helped us survive the turmoil of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s has come to the surface again, because it was that good. Times may change but people are people. Epic music and this takes me back to how grand it was live. Thanks, Polo!!
I love the virtual interplay between U.S. and Brit artists of that time - building upon each other's work, swapping ideas etc. The Brit invasion of the States played a great part in bringing the blues back to the U.S public to whom it had for the most part been considered "race music". Beatles, Stones, Animals ..... many of the greatest British bands had learned much from the black artists and re-interpreted it. That's how I (a teenager then here in Australia) got introduced to them and developed a love of blues music. I'm 71 now and still love that music and the 60s stuff that led me to it
Gary Brooker, the lead singer, unfortunately passed away last year. This song is originally from the 60's by this band. It's so wonderful to hear it fully fleshed out with the orchestra.
I had somehow missed the death of Gary Brooker. Every time one of the musicians from my youth, passes, a part of me hurts. And Cancer. I know all too much about the horrors of that disease, of which I am lucky to be surviving. RIP Gary!
Agree as well it was magical. Brings me back to the times of my youth. Music today will not ever compare to these and many other Artists . We had the Best Music and the Best of times. 67 here
Gary Brooker is timeless. RIP GARY. You will be missed. This is one of the most perfect songs ever written are performed. Check out the original with just the band and orchestra and you'll see what I'm talkin about. Beautiful song with a beautiful voice singing it.
I was about 16 (1976) when I first heard Procol Harem's music. This was an absolutely beautiful presentation. The dream of many Bands is to play with a full orchestra, this was so lovely 🥰🙏
I was feeling this song with. I love your feedback while listening to songs, but, I was with you, just letting thus one just play til the end. A whole vibe.
Once in a great while, things are perfect. This is one of those moments. Also wik, the Danish Symphony is apparently amazing. Also also wik, Pole I don't think you've ever been this quiet through a song.
Good on you for not stopping the song every minute to do a commentary. It's weird how i like watching other people listening to great classics for the first time. Peace ✌️
I always thought Gary had one of the best vocal voices in rock and as he got older it only got better. Glad you listened to it uninterrupted, it would have broken the magic spell. For a 55 year old song, it still stands the test of time...RIP Gary, we really miss you....
I watch this video, and I can smell the dust and pine of our old barn, all the instruments, mike stands, amps, drums. I can hear the boys coming in to play, laughing and jostling each other. I was youngest, and the only girl, so, I was excluded for years, until they found out I could sing. By then, the era was almost over, and wives, jobs, children, adulting came along. A lot was wrong back then, but the music was always right.
The moment this song came on the radio while driving towards the New Jersey shore back in 1967 I was compelled to pull over and just listen... spellbound. It effects me almost the same way but this time, 56 years later , a life time of memories come rushing back . It's profound and only music past and present can produce these emotions .
My husband and I just had a lovely evening listing to your songs and commentary. We just went from one to another. Listening to music of our times, now heard thru new ears with you. Thank you. It was delightful. We are 70 years old.. We grew up with many of the artists. Connie and Vince
I grew up listening to this song, one of my all time favorites, but this performance is by far the best version of it. I have watched it many, many times on TH-cam.
I am new to your page and will definitely be staying. I am a 77 year old and have cancer. I cannot donate because my money has to go to staying alive but I love your reactions . You actually listen to the lyrics and make intelligent comments.
Pure class that you let the entire song play before your analysis! This is a classic that touches everyone who grew up with this music. Thank you for your class in presenting this to a new generation. Great job!
Some thoughts: this is a SIXTIES SONG!!!! It shows that rock n' roll and symphonic music are a match made in heaven; Gary's voice didn't miss a beat in 50 plus years. THIS IS REAL MUSIC, WHAT MUSIC IS SUPPOSED TO BE!!!!!!!!!! One of the most beautiful live performances of all time. Of all time!!!!
Polo - I woke up this morning understanding this composition. And I remembered your reaction video and knew I had to add this comment to you. This piece, A Whiter Shade of Pale, is basically written as a cantata. A cantata is a classical piece often written for a liturgical (church) occasion, with the words being about the occasion, and the music being basically independent of the occaisional text. Gary Brooker obviously had an attraction to classical music and some sort of background in classical music. He wrote the music for Whiter Shade, said to be inspired by Bach (Bach cantatas = about 1707 - about 1748), independently of Keith Reid's lyrics, and sang the song from the late '60's - early 2000's. The song steeped in his creative being during that time until he was able to realize the creative vision he had had for it from the beginning. If you go back and listen to the original version from the sixties, and then listen to this version, you can feel the development of Brooker's musical idea over the 45 years between the versions. This 2006 version is Gary Brooker's MASTERPIECE - gestated over a lifetime - One man successful in his life long musical quest.
First time I heard this song was 1982 I was 16 then and i was driving my brother to work and would go back and pick him up after his shift was over at 11pm. I remember so well asking him that day what was the name of this song, I can remember the road and town.He was born in 1959 and passed on Mother’s Day 2020 from cancer. Every time I hear this song I think of him, I love you Randy.
Great song man. RIP Gary. If you enjoyed this bro, you will need to check out "The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin". There is an incredible version with full orchestra.

He passed 2/22/2022 and was 22 when he wrote this.
totally agree. His voice is better here than then. He'd been constantly perfecting his craft
Absolutely mesmerizing.
I;m 76 this song was part of my youth, even to this day i know every word, its just awesome
I loved how you never said a word and never interrupted the entire video. This song has caught you the same way it it did us back in 1967.
Not one interruption, not needed either, your face said it all!
After the video you spoke words of kindness and respect!
R.I.P. Gary Brooker..
I love how a older man can show young people this is how you sing
right on!

Absolutely correct. You could see it in his eyes that he was listening to and feeling that entire song.
