Gary & my husband were friends from junior school. Throughout his career, Gary remained a Gentleman and stayed humble to the end.
You have just listened to a masterclass 👏
Beautiful! Sounds just like when they were young.
How lucky for your husband!! I have some friends who travel the world entertaining people, and they are the most humble and kind people I know. ❤
R.I.P.
Back in early 70s, I was awakened in our attic bedroom by this on our alarm clock radio. I lay there listening, eyes closed, and realized that I did not want to be married to my husband any longer. I don't know what about this song triggered that, but I actualized it within a year or two…
Amazing!
one of the songs that helped us keep alive and sane while in Vietnam in 1967.
Nice tribute. ❤️❤️❤️✌️
Thank you for your service, Mr. Hopkins. I'm glad you found something comforting over there.
God Bless you sir for your service!
Thankfully you survived and this song helped. I graduated high school in ‘67 realized I could delay the draft until 1971 if I remained in college. I was against the war but never ever against the military and or Vietnam veterans…
Welcome Home Brother! I was there in 65’
Well done guys, you realised you were watching greatness and didn't pause the track once! An absolute masterpiece of a song, there haven't been many better. Gary was 61 at the time of this performance yet his voice sounds as good as it did when he recorded it at the age of 22.
I disagree. His voice and technique got even better with age. His voice is more distinguished in this recording than the original. The grit coupled with mastering his technique makes an incredible talent an outstanding talent; wisdom makes good things even better.
@@ScottLovenberg I agree it is deeper richer
Gary Brooker was my friend for forty years (I was a session player) and he was a lovely, lovely man I still miss terribly he died 2 years ago. 'Procol Harum' was taken from the name of a friend's Burmese Blue cat. The band was made up of session players and aspiring songwriter Gary that gelled, their line up coming together in 1967. 'A whiter shade of Pale' was their first single, and a massive, massive world wide hit. It was John Lennon's favourite song and to this day, Peter Frampton and Paul Simon both describe it as 'the most complete single record ever'. They would go on to have more hits and release plenty of albums, but this was their magnificent opener. All of Procul Harum's members would appear on many friend's albums (once a session player...) including those of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and many more.
Lastly, Gary was a highly talented multi-instrumentalist and would over time, teach himself how to arrange and orchestrate - and this version here, from 2006, is finally how he hard it in his head in 1967, but could not write it that way (the record company would not have recorded it that way, either), so this was the wheel coming full circle. Oh yes...most Danes are multilingual, they would have easily understood him.
I love this the best!!!!
I’ve watched the video of this performance probably 100 times. Still gives me chills. It is spectacular.
Me too!!
This Music bring me down, and I can dreaming...
This song was released in 1967 and it reached no1 in the UK charts for six weeks and no5 in the US Billboard Hot 100.
It has sold over 10 million copies world wide and 1000 people or more have covered this song.
The version that you are watching now is with the Danish National Concert Orchestra and Choir.
Gary Brooker the lead singer passed away in 2022 aged 76 R.I.P
And it was written by Bach 300 years ago.
Gary Brooker was the lead vocalist for Procol Harum in the 60's.
@@slavaukraini404 No, it wasn't, it was INSPIRED by Bach's 'Air.'
Annie Lennox does a lovely cover
I think a lot of Danish people speak English.
This performance brings me to tears: EVERY TIME!!! Thanks for reacting to this one, Guys!! HUGS!! RIP, Gary Brooker - that VOICE!! YOU are MISSED, SIR!!!
They played in Denmark because they were invited.
Procol Harum was an English band who were at their height in ‘67 and the summer of love.
This tune was everywhere, certainly in the UK.
Conquistador by them is my favourite though.
RIP Gary Brooker.
Their live album from the late 60s and early 70s is their most known album. Good stuff.
The most played song on UK radio in the 20th Century wasn't by the Beatles, Elvis, The Rolling Stones etc., it was this song.
I have noticed, through time, that you pause to react. That's perfectly normal, but you were stunned into silence by this. Quite right too. Perfection.
One of only 46 singles in the history of music that has sold over 10 million copies. Gary Brooker RIP had a voice that aged like fine wine.
A gentleman all his life. RIP Gary
I am a BABY BOOMER and we played the grooves off our 45's of this song in 1967. We were absorbed with how many of our boyfriends, uncles, and brothers were dying every week in Vietnam.....this literally "saved" us many days as we sat in a circle and play this over and over. I am delighted that you young people are experiencing some wonderful music.
You can now do Knights in White Satin by The Moody Blues.
Hopefully the full album version with the poem.
*NIGHTS not Knights.
@@TheCornishCockney D'oh!!😆
They did it last year. However, they did not do the extended album version with "Late Lament" included. Hopefully they fix that soon.
Ok but procol is better
This song was released 57 years ago. And Gary Brooker's voice has aged like a fine wine. I like this version even more than the original. Unfortunately he passed away last year.
This song was huge around the world. RIP Gary!
It does not matter what style of music you are into, be it Rap, Metal, Pop, or whatever, good music reaches all of us.
This song is supposedly the most played song of the last 70 years. There have been over 900 covers of this song recorded by other groups. "Conquistador" was Procol Harum's other U.S. hit. Procol Harum is misspelled Latin for "Far beyond these things"
I saw them 1967 at the old Fillmore in San Francisco. They were just a band no orchestra. They were the band to play before The Doors. Wonderful concert and only 50 people or so were there. The bands played great. I was sitting on the floor in the middle of the room. I remember it was a Thursday night. One of my favourite memories.
Now you need to go back to the original recording made by them back in the 60's. It's a gorgeous song done both ways. Haunting and mysterious
The studio version came out in 1967 and was great but this live version is stupendous as it has more depth because of the orchestra and choir. Gary Brooker's voice had aged like a fine wine. R.I.P. Gary.
I’m 55 years old now. My mom was pregnant with me in 1967 when this song first came out. I’ve heard and loved my literal entire life. The singer sadly passed away last year I believe. He definitely had a pure and powerful voice. I started learning guitar three years ago and this song was one of the first I learned. Great pick guys!
Gary's voice was stunning by the end of his life. Listening to this live version vs. the studio version makes you realize that his voice and recording technology have both gotten better since the original recording and mixing. I'm glad we were able to record such a high fidelity version of Gary at his best towards the end. Aged like fine wine.
I. Was 19 years old ,when this song came out in 1967.Gary Booker was the singers name,we lost Gary two years ago,he was a genius in music May God Bless him always,RIP.
Both Elton John & John Lennon both said that this was the most beautiful song ever written. Lennon listened to it whenever he rode in his Bentley in NYC. RIP Gary. Next up from Procol Harum would be "Conquistador".
The original song didn't have the orchestra but the Hammond B-3 organ sounded beautiful without the orchestra. It has always been one of my favorite songs on the B-3.
A Hammond B-3 makes most every song better!
It's funny untalented people made so many awful songs with the Hammond it became a joke but the great musicians who could play it could make real magic and changed the landscape of music.
I'll just say this... Imagine being 16, you just snuck out to burn one, now you're back in your bedroom with your headphones and Procol Harum on the record player... And that's why us boomers are so damned cool!
Yup, I'm a boomer and I agree! 👍🏻
Yes 1967. I was 5 so my whole life. Never loses its magic. This was so special with the orchestra! Cheers guys, you can't unhear it 😂
When I was in the Navy, in 1976, I heard a band playing this song in a park in Naples, Italy. It wasn't until I recognized the song that I realized the band was singing in English. I later ran into a couple of guys from the band, and found that they actually spoke very little English, but sang the song without really knowing the lyrics. That's why I didn't recognize it as English at first.
I didn't appreciate this song years, ago when I was young but decades later, consider it a masterpiece. And no, they weren't often accompanied by an orchestra.
One of my first solo performances as a figure skater was to that intro ❤️🔥
Greetings once again from New Zealand. Hugely famous song from back then. Everyone knew Procol Harum, they had such a distinctive sound, and his voice hadn't changed a bit from then til now. Try and watch a version from then if you can find one. Songs has so much meaning back then :)
Gary Brooker was a singular talent, the likes of which you only see once every couple of generations. I wish I could hear this song for the first time again.
Whiter shade of pale, WOW ! I'm 72 and that brings back memories. All good ones,if you know what I mean ! It almost always got them in the mood . Must have been the melody! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🪖🪖🚓🚓👮👮
Gary Brooker, the lead singer, passed away a couple of years ago sadly
Yep, 2022.
This was the band that all of the greats admired and revered.. musicians musician’s.
Rest in Peace Mr. Gary Brooker ❤
OK Guys now check out "Conquistador" from the same concert. great song too.
We had great music growing up in the 50's, 60's, and the 70's... then it skipped a decade... Wasn't so thrilled by the 80's...
They were, I believe, the first rock band to perform live with an orchestra, back in the late '60s.
Saw them at the Hollywood Bowl under the stars with the Los Angeles Symphony Orchestra around 1971. Just fabulous!
This may be as close to a perfect rendition of a song that you can get. His voice is so strong and the orchestra is amazing.
Agree...
Gary Brooker (lead vocalist) said that their promoter came up with the name. A friend owned a Siamese cat whose pedigree name was Procol Harum.
1967. The year my life changed forever. This song
was released and the year my mother died. I was 14.
Garys’ voice and the organ that accompanied him,
carried me through a lot. This song means EVERY-
THING to me. This rendition of it is wonderful and
I’m very happy it brought Gary back to give him his
flowers before we lost him to! ❤
Oh, sweetie! Fourteen is such a confusing time, with conflicting emotions. Then to lose your mother, also. I'm so very sorry.
This song can never be taken from you, ever. So sad to hear when a parent leaves young children behind. I'm sorry for your loss all those years ago and I'm happy this song has been a lifeline for you ever since. May God bless and comfort you and yours always.
I was asked a couple of years ago if I could choose just one song to be my all time favourite. I chose this one. So many of my favourites are dependent on my mood but this one I can listen to anytime anywhere
Cannot believe anybody has never heard of them? best song ever.
Here you get to hear a Hammond Organ. They were an essential instrument for bands of the 60's and 70's.
I have heard the original hundreds of times, without knowing what it's about, but have always known it is a beautiful tune, and don't care what it's about.
Ok... I'll blow your mind then. The song is basically a very simple girl-leaves-boy story. A guy takes his girl to a party. They were dancing and drinking and he was having a great time. "we skipped the light fandango (dance), turned cartwheels cross the floor". But at some point, the girl turns to the guy to break the news to him. Her "face at first just ghostly, turned a whiter shade of pale". She "said there is no reason" (gave him the it's not you it's me), and "although my eyes were open, they might just as well have been closed" - he never saw it coming. There are a couple extra verses to this song, where he "would not let her be" - where he approaches her and basically says he's not happy about it, but she makes it clear it's over. So he's left amongst the party goers surrounded by people having a good time, while he's left being blindsided with a breakup.
@@pirtatejoe If what it's about is that simple of a story, I think I could have figured it out, when I first heard it when I was sixteen, in 1967. But I'll keep it mind, as a possibility, until I sort through this talk about vestal virgins, and Canterbury Tales. Thanks for the input! BTW, I've tripped many a light fantastic, but not to this song!
@@ramblerdave1339 Not my interpretation... it is what Keith Reid has said in interviews (he wrote the song). The line about vestal virgins is him saying in what high regard he holds her - he didn't want to let her go... in one of the extra verses, there is a line "you must be the mermaid who took Neptune for a ride" referencing back to her again in that mythical way. He had said in the interview that he was "just trying to set the scene" talking about "as the miller told his tale" hinting that the party the couple is attending may be a bit raunchy as in the miller's tale where the miller's wife was cheating on him... so perhaps she was cheating on him and one (or perhaps 2 guys as in the miller's tale) she was cheating with was there also so she is telling him it's over and "the truth is plain to see".
The late Gary Brooker had a good voice in 1967 when Procol Harum released this great hit. He was 61 during this performance in 2006 and his voice was great. The orchestra ensemble and chorus was part of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, (remember the Good Bad and the Ugly). Gary didn't think this song would last but maybe 10 years. But was surprised that every show they did, young teens were still requesting this masterpiece. It is really refreshing how you two were really getting into this music of my high school days. You will never hear a better performance than this one. Good job.
One of the greatest songs ever written. It showcases the Hammond organ to perfection. Folks still argue about the meaning of the lyrics & I don’t think anyone truly knows. Loved watching your reaction to it; you looked truly mesmerised.
I was working on an offshore oil rig in Denmark some years ago. In the galley one evening, three of us were having a conversation, myself (Scottish), our crane operator from the North East of England, Spike, who had a broad Geordie accent, and Bruno our Danish drilling supervisor. Whatever Spike had just said, Bruno turned to him and said "for fuck's sake, Spike, speak English!" The look on Spike's face was unforgettable...
The Danes can speak English very well.
The lyrics reference The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, written in Old English from 1387 to 1400, a collection of 24 stories in 17,000 lines.
Actually, The Canterbury Tales are early Modern English. Beowulf is Old English. But, yeah, you're spot-on that it's a literary reference old AF. :)
The song is based on the book The Canterbury Tales.
Lyricist Matthew Fisher has said this is not true.
@@learnsteelguitarinretirement The Canterbury Tales was written by Geoffrey Chaucer in 1392. In the song he sings about vestal virgins. Who in the last 700+ years has anyone used the term "vestal virgin"? That's why I think it's true the song was inspired by The Canterbury Tales.
The millers tale made me think the same
This is still fantastic after all these years. It was radical for it's time and still radical now.
One of the greatest performances ever!!!!
RIP Gary Brooker -Legend
To me, this is part of the Vietnam era songs. .... it's such a stunning song!!!!
The fact you didn’t pause it once and just soaked the genius of this in, makes me so happy ❤
Every time i hear this it reminds of when i bought my daughter a Casio Keyboard for Xmas, and she wanted nothing to do with it , and i spent all night figuring out this and a bunch of other songs, and my music theory classes finally kicked in after Being out of school 15 year lmao as i was a guitar player and he showed us everything on Piano.
Having been to Denmark a couple of times, and also having the privilege to call a few Danes friends I know that the vast majority speak better English than most of us English people 😂 One guy I met on my first trip to Denmark told me that he spoke English with a slight American accent because he learnt English from all the wrestling videos he watched growing up! 😂
THAT'S MUSIC, MY YOUNG FRIENDS, THAT'S MUSIC.
Take a classic rock song from 1968 and add an orchestra and choir and you get this EPIC performance
This song is was my Parents in Laws first dance as a married couple, my parents was Four in the Morning. We were Aerosmith I don't want to miss a thing.
When we had our wedding, I chose for them to play all three, one after the other so my new mum and dad and my parents could share the moment with us. It was a right mix of music on that dance floor.
This dudes voice had never shaken or faltered in age, which can come to most of us. Gary Brooker.
This song… from 1965 on a little hand held transistor radio to this live performance with orchestra continues to be one of my all time favs!
I still remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I pulled over to the side of the road.......mesmerized in its beauty.
One of my all time favorites! So beautiful.
I have always loved this song, even as a young kid. It then became an incredibly important song to my dad and me. His brother was dying in hospital of cancer, and we got a phone call saying that it was imminent. We jumped in the car and headed off. We were about halfway there and this song came on the radio. We both felt it at the same time and we both knew we hadn't made it in time. It was like he was saying goodbye to us through this song. Neither of us needed to say anything, we just knew.
Your reaction was PERFECT. You just let the music pull you in. No comment. NO interruptions. Just enjoying the fact that THIS is a MASTERPIECE!
This is one of the best “live” concerts 2006 Denmark! Salty Dog and Conquistador are great songs from this concert…
That voice after all these years - exactly the same🌻
Better!! 😊
Hell yes, love this song..Enjoy it..Aka Mary
Like 40 yrs later or more! Fantastic!!🎉
One of the most beautiful songs ever!
GREAT reaction guys!! As much as I love the original album version, this one here has become the definitive 'perfect' version for me! The orchestra, performance, and especially Gary Brooker's (RIP) voice!! (which IMHO got better with age) - it truly doesn't get better than this! Beautiful piece.
Cheers!
I cannot listen to this beautiful song without being moved to tears. RIP Gary Brooker ♥️
In 1970 onwards, I used to "Bottle Up" - re-stock the shelves - in the pub in London, every morning with this and Nights In White Satin playing, pre opening at 11am.
Brooker was in his 70's when this was recrded 🇬🇧😊
I'm pretty sure he was around 67-68 years old when this concert was performed and recorded. He died in 2022, age 76.
I believe the band is named after a cat owned by one of the band members or a friend
Many Scandinavians speak better English as a second language than many native speakers. A song referencing J S Bach *and* Geoffrey Chaucer, now that's class!
I have always loved this song-when I was young I thought it was so mysterious
Exactly it was the 60s. Gary Brooker was 62 when this was recorded . RIP Mr. Brooker who recently passed away from cancer. But what a voice.
I believe this song was based on The Canterbury Tales a novel written in very old English in the 1300’s by Chaucer.Very difficult to discern the meaning. There are actually 2 more verses not included in the song. At the end of the day the song sounds so good does it really matter what it’s about?
Fantastic reaction guys🙏 Thank you for reacting to one of my recommendations. This is a really nice live version though I always prefer the original studio version the organ is so good in it. There is another really good score from this live show called Conquistador. I recommend you check it out. The bands name is Latin for “Far beyond these things”
This was the number one song of 1967. Everyone loved it
A true masterpiece and just one more absolutely golden song & performance! Wonderful choice! 💙🙏🏼
Another great song from the superb Procol Harum from this same concert is Conquistador a real banger
Guitarist Robin Trower joined Procol Harum around the time this came out. Not sure if he's on the original recording or not. A great, if atypical song of theirs featuring Trower is 'Whiskey Train'. I also like 'Simple Sister' and their other big hit, recorded with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, 'Conquistador'. Enjoy. Deuces!!
😊🤙🏼🎶🔥❤️🍁❤️✨️🕊
Sweet! Never heard this live version before.
Gary Brooker lead singer thank you for sharing your gift of voice with us. Masterpiece vocals and song. Rip.!
Not one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL performances/songs EVER!!! Just perfection ❤
Yea they do visit a lot of brothels in GOT, lol . I hadn't heard this live version of the song , enjoyed it.
One of my dads favorites... and it kinda helped with my musical taste, up there with King Crimson, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Yes, Focus, Jethro Tull
R.I.P. Gary Brooker.
Gary Brooker had a fantastic voice. His voice never changed from when he was younger. You should check the original video. You will be amazed! He passed away a few ago, RIP Gary Love your reactions!
Class all day!🌟🧡✌
Soo many years later and Gary sounded that great. Flashback to the Summer of Love.
The name came from a cat. Though it was denied, I always see the connection to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, particularly "The Miller's Tale".
Wow, you truly soaked up the greatness of this masterpiece, love you guys ❤
Great reaction guys. You respected how great this performance was.
I’ve always loved this song ever since Procol Harum came out with it many years ago. Love this group. Good pick
Can you believe Robin Trower came from this band, check out Bridge of Sighs by him, and this is the best song Proco ever did in my opinion.
One of my top 10 favorite songs.
His voice has changed a tad. I suggest you find the original and compare.
Not as much as one might guess after 57 years.
This song came out in the 60s when I was a teenager,It was special then, and whenever I hear it I feel the Same euphoria.
It never gets old.
Back then people were so good on the organ. It stands out like it is the chorus.
He said Vessel Virgins.I think he is talking about a fleet of ships.
Gary never stopped gigging, saw him just before covid at a festival and also at Chas Hodge's memorial gig with Eric Clapton and many many other Brit Legend's 🌟
