After buying so many games over the previous three years, I've drastically cut back on my game spending in 2024 by using a new rule-I only allow myself to buy a game when I've rolled credits on four of my backlogged titles.
It's been months since I've bought a new game; right now I'm making my way through the Sky trilogy in the Trails series-hot damn, these games can be long!
I had to implement the same rule too 😅
So cool seeing how much love and care developers put into those collector editions you got.
Waste of time and money imo.
All I care about is the disc/cartridge and if I can play and beat physical games in 20 years then that’s what matters.
You really think in 20 years people would care about the extra pins and artbook if they can play the physical game on the intended hardware?

I haven't felt it. The handful of games I wanted that were digital only ended up with physical editions.
I buy digital games for fun, you should try as well. Watching my digital library (.pngs) is pretty good for the soul.

i wish i had the passion to buy these newer titles. from me, i have been buying less and less as the years go by, mainly because of how games are made now. sometimes we don't even get the whole game on a disc or on a card (nintendo, im looking at you!). also, games get updated on a weekly or monthly bases. If i do buy, its mainly playstation titles. i mainly get nintendo games digitally.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I've heard some mixed things about the combat style so I'm looking forward to seeing how I take to it.
I think they nailed the aesthetics and music but were lacking in the story and characters. combat was fun but just had limited options you could do. if they do a sequel they would do well in hiring better writers and just tinkering with the battle mechanics a bit more. its a good first attempt, ill give them that. i just think it was a bit overhyped.

Those Idea Factory collectors editions look so well done! I haven't collected any retro games this year, definitely been focused on the Switch before some of those games get harder to find/more expensive. I would say for hidden gem my favorite pickup this year has been Gerda: A Flame in Winter - I'm not super huge on VNs but that one is my new favorite.

Some really solid pickups! I don't think you'll have any regrets setting up the Final Fantasy VII section on your shelf after you play Remake/Rebirth 🙂 Both are fantastic in their own unique ways, and it's so nice to see the extra depth and character growth you experience that wasn't as possible in the original game. I absolutely love your collection! I've been a huge gamer my whole life and have a pretty massive collection myself going all the way back to the Nes even though I've sadly had to start over from scratch several times as living in Reno Nevada for many years 5 entire game collections were stolen from me.

I completely agree with you and I’ve been slowing down my buying this year too and curving fomo. Another possible option for you for limited run games is there retail store in NC, it has all there releases in store for example both the persona games are there right know for the same price as they preordered online for and they often show up to the store before very many people have received there order. So me personally I don’t preorder I just wait till they get to the store and get them then for the same price as preorder and I don’t have to spend the money until the day I get them. Only thing that’s sometimes hard is certain collectors editions like the Jedi survivor collectors edition they didn’t get in the store except for people that preordered in store. But all there regular releases show up in the store :)
I live in California, so unfortunately the NC store is a bit too far away for me.

I was basically frozen with my finger over the buy button on the Metaphor collector's edition... But I decided not to, and the main reason is that I'm just literally out of room. 😂 I think for me it's going to be just Trails and Xeno collectors editions going forward. But I'll be really curious to see the Metaphor set when you get it!
One of my worries regarding Metaphor is that Atlus will release a more complete version within the year 🫠

I've been buying games at about $20 and under and very rarely anything at launch. It the only way now to not spend hundreds of dollars.
That's what I've been doing for years. Unless it's something I absolutely wanna play immediate (BoTW, ToTK), I've waited for holiday sales before picking up any games.
Yeah I try not to purchase new releases unless it's a limited edition I know won't be around post launch or if it's a game I want to play close to launch.

Excited to hear 7 remake/rebirth opinions - they are beautiful games, I’m currently playing through rebirth and restarting final fantasy XIV journey again for a long term jrpg.
Current state of the economy: It's harder to buy a house and stuff but otherwise it's the best performing economy in the world and in history at the moment. 0:20
I would rather have my dollars spent investing than buying stuff right now, and making sure my emergency fund is well cushioned in case my job transition ends encounters unexpected issues.
Glad to hear you pre-ordered Tsukihime as well! I just got mine and it both looks and sounds incredible on the OLED switch. I haven't spoiled it for myself, so I'm really excited for this to be my first experience with the story 😊
Baten Kaitos Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean is my favorite game of all time, seeing people pick up the HD Remaster double pack warms my heart. The fact that there is new merch and even a recent Steam release is absolutely unreal to me.
I'm so glad that it's now accessible for more to experience it too! Missed out on it as I never had a Game Cube back in the day.
I think all I have preordered is Daybreak and the new Mercenaries that come out in July. I unfortunately missed P4G and had to buy after market, so I think there’s only 4-5 RPGs i still need to preorder unless I get a few more surprises before final quarter. Two that I’m really looking forward to are Metal Slug Tactics and Y’s X.
I'm looking forward to Ys X as well! I forgot to mention that I'm waiting for NISA to finally post a preorder for the collector edition in the video... It'll hopefully be the last CE I intend to acquire for the year 😅
So far I've only bought Jade Coccoon 2, Prince of Persia Lost Crown and Sea of Stars to play. I'll probably be buying my first Limited Run Game in Tomba when it comes out, although I wish they had a PS4 physical.
I think I saw somewhere the PS4 launch is at a later date for Tomba, maybe they'll make a physical then?

I’m trying to resist buying all the SMT games on 3DS but they’d look so beautiful on my shelf. I don’t think I can hold out much longer but it’s gonna hurt my wallet. I keep track of my purchases in Excel too we are definitely kindred spirits.
The SMT 3DS games are pretty great! Really love the Devil Survivor games in particular.
I feel you… I have an eBay alert for them but will require a pay rise before I can go for them!
Sold off large chunks in my collection around 2019. Had so many games that I couldn't appreciate my personal favorites. Even if I had many of them prominently displayed, everything just felt buried by the weight of my collection. I kept about 90 games from multiple consoles. For some reason this year, I've been going back and re buying games I sold. Especially 3ds. Your videos are super refreshing and have been reigning those unhealthy impulses back. Thank you 🙏
I've not bought a physical game in ages so treated myself to the Jurassic park classic collection which are games I wanted but original physical copies are so expensive, I'm tired 😫

If you think only 1 month to pre-order from Limited Run is bad, you should count yourself lucky because when they first started selling games they only had 1 day & there was a set time when they would go up on that set date 🤦♂️ (not to mention the stock was extremely limited)

I can't agree enough how frustrating it is how these multi-million, or in some case billion dollar publishers are too cheap to publish their own games physically. They're training customers to be okay not actually owning their products, and I hate that it's working for the masses. Then we have to rely on places like Limited Run who thrive on FOMO. It's infuriating, and I don't like supporting them.
I find it funny also that in a lot of cases Japan gets physical versions of games than we do, because living spaces are typically a lot smaller in Japan, so a lot of people have less space for storage than people in the west might. Yet so many people act like "don't have room" for all these games physically anymore.
If we do ever get to a point where gaming is all digital, I'm really gonna be done buying games I think. I'll focus on retro, or my backlog.

I got Sea of Stars from Playasia and for the $40, I got the game with a nice box that included the soundtrack, an art card, and a sticker.

Recently I have stopped collecting physical not for budget reasons but just not enough time to play everything I own. I am now living through yt videos like yours. It's cool to at least see these editions and the differences between platforms.

I didn’t know about this sea of stars edition. I was looking forward to buy the physical edition, but this art just killed me :( I’ll look for prices. The game is awesome, hopefully you can enjoy it! I played on ps plus subscription on ps5. Make sure to play the post game too (called true ending). The art and the music is great, the skill selection is small. But the game has its charm.
I played gravity rush on my ps vita. It’s such a underrated game. It is very unique and the gameplay is really cool. The art and the manga-like conversation are very nice. I also kinda get the ps4 games, yet I don’t really collect on ps4-5 just yet. Maybe I should start.
Regarding your comments about getting games while the new Nintendo console is on the corner. This is actually the time where those rare games come out and become really expensive because they were released towards the end of the console life😅 it’s gonna be worse the next, when the console is out. Those cult low print Nintendo switch games are going to be scarce. And usually RPGs and VN are the one who suffers the most.
My persona 3 limited run game hasn’t arrived. I asked for the mid version of it tho. (Between the standard and CE) :(. Sometimes we have to watch out for those LRG. The messenger is a LRG that is sequel to Sea of stars made by the same developer, and it is quite expensive, once I finished Sea of stars, I wanted to look for that but the price is very restrictive. 😢
I've been transitioning to a new job so I slowed down videos for the last few months.

Things are strange with physical game sales, for instance trails through daybreak released and i cannot get it physically in any store unless i order for shipping smh.

So what's up with me? Yeah I quit buying Modern gaming. I quit because I found it to overwhelming. I had like 10+ games in my back log another 10 on my list, then it was a matter of me hardly playing them because it felt like a huge chore to beat games that are 30 hours on avg, with work that makes me mentally & physically exhausting I just said enough is enough & decided to quit Modern gaming.
I am just curious, you made a chart with your spending, how much do you want to spend this year on games?
I didn't really have a definitive threshold of how much I'm looking to spend. The goal was to be more selective so I can have more time to focus on them this year. And put off other titles I may be interested in next year (when hopefully they'll still be available and on sale).
Sorry to hear that modern gaming hasn't been meshing with your playing style. But the great thing about gaming is that we have a huge history of fantastic titles that we can tap into! So I hope you can discover some new favorites looking back at least.

The lrg issue does suck, but its better than nothing at least in my mind. Esp if you believe the ceo, Atlus had no intention of doing a physical for those at all. And im sure similar with many other big publishers using LRG at this point, which does suck still tho.
And for retro games iv been in a wait and see mood also, with how many we see getting remasters now feels it's best to wait a few years
Yeah, many companies are starting to downsize their physical production departments, and relying on LRG which is better than no physical. But not ideal for the overall physical media collecting community.
Great job! I’m also buying less lately, but I don’t think I have the discipline to cut back too much further.

Glad I helped remind you about that release! It's one I can see going fast like Witch on Holy Night. Though I saw in other countries that they're offering standard editions so there's that at least this time around.
I agree with you about Limited Run games being “limited” and I regret not ordering Persona 3 and Persona 4 for switch because now I have no way to get them except on resale market or if one turns out in a random GameStop; I did find Blasphamous 1 for switch at a GS 😮 which I did not know had a physical release. But I’m curious: what’s that steelbook next to the blue penguin bottom left on video?
It might be ok because in theory switch 2 will have persona 3 reload. And presumably they will do a 4 remake.

This year I bought a holy grail item: the Seaman Christmas Edition Dreamcast. it’s clean af. never thought I’d see the day either! i paid 999 dollars for it. thank the Lord.

Nice pickups and thanks for your results so far. My pre-order of Tsukihime was delayed of course (sometime after the 4th). I kind of regret not preordering Metaphor, but I was in a no buy situation then (kind of still am at the moment). My biggest retro pick up was earlier in the year and is Shadow Hearts for the PS2 in really good condition (now I have all three that I don't have time for, lol)
I really adore your collecting videos, it inspires me to pull the trigger on the physical editions i want. Responsibly, of course! I tend to debate with myself too hard, like with the Pentiment Limited Run edition, and I ended up missing it :((((

Initially it was an Amazon exclusive and then GameStop went ahead and reprinted them and sold them preowned. I’m sure there are Reddit posts about that. That’s how I picked mine up. it came opened but in pristine condition.
I've been playing through Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4. It's freaking amazing! It's just as good, if not better than the original. I downloaded the original game on Switch, but I got stuck, so I decided to give the Remake a try. It's one of the reasons why I wanted to get a PS4. I think it goes up to when you leave Midgar if I'm not mistaken, but that's about how much I got on Switch anyway. I wish the FF7 Remake stuff was also on Xbox, especially Game Pass so I have access to that. I have a Series S, but I don't have a PS5 yet and I don't want to pay $500 for it either. If I do get a PS5, I will have to upgrade my monitors as well. I've also beat Ys 8 and TTYD on Switch. TTYD is one of my all time favorites, and Ys 8's ending made me mad. No spoilers, but it was a disappointing end to a decent game. I hope other Ys games don't end on the same note as Ys 8.
Gravity Rush is so hard to find T_T
Play Persona 4 Golden before you play P3 Reload. Golden feels like a jazzed up PS2 game. Reload is closer to P5 quality. P4 still has the best story and ensemble but it’s time for a facelift.
100% agree with large companies using Limited Run. XBox really rubs me the wrong way. They are the biggest company in existence.

Year so far: bought 4 (3 digital, and Sea of Stars physical for the Switch which I am halfway through and loving every minute), received 5 physical games as gifts. Beaten 2 games. Need to speed up to try and even up games in and games removed from the backlog.
I don't mind the month pre-order when it comes to LRG as much as I do care about big studios using them like Ubisoft or even Xbox. They have plenty of money to publish them.
Im still waiting for my Persona 4 Golden Deluxe from Limted Run 😮💨 it comes next month though. Also visual novels are great

It's unfortunate 'Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom' is one of those novel styled games. I often take pride and reassure myself of having good taste in anime when I see series I've watched already become available on large streaming platforms for the masses, or receive video game iterations. Nice to see you back Emily, and good to know your not only buying the premium stuff (like Rebirth & Baldur's Gate 3) but using your wallet to vote for somewhat decent stories. Also, although I don't care for discs, I can see the investment in a collectors PS5 'Metaphor: ReFantazio' compared to a Switch 'Persona' title knowing that there is no official seal of quality on the cart sticker these days...

I definitely get the frustration with limited run, especially for the bigger publisher games.
I live 10 minutes from the retail shop so it hasn’t hit me super hard. But I did notice when I picked up Rocket Knight last week for switch, none on the shelf and only could grab if preordered. I’m trying to finish the world ends with you on the switch but the controls are a bit weird.
I've heard that the Switch version controls can get a bit wonky, that's why I just went for the original DS copy myself 😅

Well they are getting better about that. For many of their previous releases you probably only had minutes. If you were lucky.

hey Emily, with BG3 do you know if its up to date on disc? i have the japan release, but i know shortly after it came out the game had a massive overhaul.
The physical editions through Larian Studios' website will be playable without additional downloads (unlike the Japanese version). I'm unsure whether it'll have all the up-to-date patches however.
