It's not the age, it's the amount of obligations and kids you have. I'm 44 and if it weren't for my two kids, I would game like I did on my 20s.

My SO plays her Vita religiously. She's a doctor in sports medicine and she says that playing something and keeping up with new releases and trends helps her immeasurably at work since she mostly sees collegiate athletes. I'm basically a househusband so even though I am home more often I'm doing all the maintenance and hold a job that is split between months of WFH and long distance travel. We still only find about 8-10 hours to game together.

Yeah, for sure. In my case, my full-time job and personal responsibilities take up a lot of my time as an adult so I have to squeeze in gaming time whenever I can.
I have so much more time to game when I'm on vacation.

Don't ever let your childhood die. If it dies, you will lose a piece of you along with. You can game at any age. You decide how you want to enjoy your time and your life. Look at how fast life flew by. Yesterday, you were an 8 year old being all giddy around christmas time to open that present and suddenly, you're sitting in your cubicle, or working the graveyard shift in your 40's or 50's wondering about the good ol' days and the modern day and the future that lies ahead. Go home, fire up that video game system and escape to a different world for an hour or two. Love it!!!

40s. Kids. Busy medical career. Gaming is one of my wind down activities. Still really enjoy it. I have gotten away from hardcore sweaty gaming and much more prefer easier more relaxed difficulties. No Mans Sky, Starfield, V rising, and Rogue Trader are my go to.

Before marriage i will platinumed games (meaning collect all the trophies) and will always put my difficulty to hard. U feel a sense of satisfaction once u platinumed a game and complete games in hard mode. However, since i have kids and busy working, i cannot spend my whole free time gaming, i don’t have the leisure time to repeating back levels or boss fights as u will die alot if playing in hard difficulty. Instead i continue gaming but in easy/medium difficulty and do them with my 2 kids together 😊

I’m 52 - mobile software engineer with little free time trying to split it between gaming and my other, cycling hobby. I’ve been gaming since the 8bit micros era.
In summary, I’d say I noticed the following:
    - I focus on fewer games which offer an artistic experience, not just great gameplay. Hence, developers like ATLUS is what I’m after these days.
    - I no longer pay any attention to anyone who considers gaming as something “unusual” for someone of my age. Not caring for such negativity is one of the benefits that comes with age.
Great video and channel - greetings from Greece!

      for god's sake.
I have given up on most people figuring out that number of birthdays has any real bearing on, or any true causal relationship with , much of anything - least of all personal interests and art appreciation(games...).
      I'm 58.
my coordination and intellect are top notch.
These things IMPROVE with time IF they are properly maintained.
      Good grief.

I've been divorced for 13 years, my two oldest kids are grown, and my youngest that I raised as a single dad is 15 now and she turned out to be a gamer (and my third straight A's student). So I've been back to gaming like I did as a teenager, nights and weekends are mine to do whatever I want.

I'm 54. I grew up with a gamer dad. He was in the computer field. The family would go to work with him. They would play Adventure (Colossal cave).
We had a pinball machine and a tempest machine at home.
Naturally we had an Atari, and later on the Atari 5200. I couldn't help but to be a gamer.
I exercise in VR. Beat Saber can burn a thousand calories in an hour!
I collect video game consoles and games. I think I'm over 30 consoles now. I love to play retro.
I do have a switch and an Xbox and I use them quite frequently. I love Rocket League! I also like games like Need for Speed, Life is Strange series, Mario Golf, and just about everything else. My sister and I are about to start Stray (The second time for me first time for her). We play long distance over Xbox.
I feel really privileged to have seen this industry grow.

Great video. I'm nearly 41, married without kids. I can manage maybe 5 to 8 hours of gaming a week. I get up much earlier than my wife in the morning, so I hit the gym and then squeeze in about an hour of gaming (or another hobby like reading, sometimes both). Or I squeeze it in during evenings she works late. The trick as you get older is to not let it interfere with your real life responsibilities. And that goes for any hobby, not just gaming.

I'm turning 50 this year, I've kept most of my games and consoles from my late teens onwards to current generation xbox , switch and playstation. Outside of work I have several hobbies like photography, toy and game collecting , playing and listening to music and watching TH-cam videos about these hobbies. When I find time for for games I'm mostly playing GTA 5 online with my nephew or solo retro arcade games when I just want to chill. The choices in newer games are amazing but they struggle to hold my attention once I have checked out the graphics and first level or two unlike the simpler older arcade games I played in my teens like Robocop, Golden Axe or Alien vs Predator arcade, these keep me coming back for more.

I think the scope of how you play games has to change when you get older. It’s no longer about 100%ing something. If I can get the credits to roll then that’s a huge achievement at this point.

    • @handsoaphandsoap
      @handsoaphandsoap 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I also think the completionist mindset is just not the way most players should approach games. Sure, if that’s your bag and the way you enjoy games and don’t mind playing fewer titles as a tradeoff then by all means, go for it. But most people aren’t gonna have the time to complete every single game and if they start to expect themselves to, they will quickly tire themselves out and find gaming to become a chore rather than a hobby. It’s important to remember that gaming should be fun and if you’re not having fun, take a break. Your games aren’t going anywhere.

    I love this video.
I am almost 55 and am an avid Fortnite, Call of Duty and Cyberpunk player. I have an Xbox Series s and x (in separate rooms) and a PlayStation 5 which I stream from. I’m only fairly new to streaming but have been affiliated for 2 years and recently finally hit my 200 follower mark! Gaming is an important part of my life as I use it as an escape, a relaxation thing and a source of community as I play with my friends online. I live in a country town in NSW in Australia and am away from my friends. It’s weird too because being my age with my interests makes me not really a very good friend for people of my same demographic, so most of my friends are younger than me, and live in the city which is 4 hours away.
I work full time in addition to streaming so it’s rough to maintain any sort of regularity. I also have a movie review blog, paint miniatures and run a discord… phew! I am lucky because my daughter is in her late 20s so I don’t have any family obligations except for those to my wife, who can fend for herself if need be… and actually usually prefers me not to be under her feet!!
Anyway, thanks for the video: I’ve become an immediate fan!

This is one of my favorite videos I've watched in awhile. Your gaming journey is so relatable. I'm 34 and discovering strategy RPGs and Resident Evil 4 remake shook up my gaming fatigue and I've been squeezing in gaming time all over the place. Having a pregnant wife, full time job, building a business, and training for a marathon ya gotta be strategic with your time but it's all possible in one day.

    1. Competitive multiplayer feels like a young man’s/woman’s sport I just don’t have the time to get gud, which is why Hell Divers 2 = Breath of fresh air.
    2. I really love Indies for their variety, fresh take, and brevity which lets me play all sorts of games these days without burnout.

Here in my 30s, I’m finding myself collecting an assortment of Switch games, of a bunch of my favorite genres. To tackle my backlog, I set my library to longest-shortest played; and play the least played games first. Eventually, the least played will turn into the most, and the cycle repeats. And the wide variety, helps keep things fresh, but still familiar.

Am Swiss and 65 years old. I love gaming but usually solo. The reason for that is, that most younger gamers usually hurry too much for me. I don't have the fast reactions as the young guns have. I love to take my time. That is why i rarely play souls games. I play more ESO like games. Dragons Dogma, etc. bit slower games. I love the the fantasy and the graphics and just the fun. Where i really have trouble is with PC games because I'm not great with the keyboard mainly with the left hand, so I play on PS5.

June 1st '79 in the building baby! I will say being 45 now probably about 3 to 4 years ago my gaming habits did change as far as the type of games that I love even now but don't necessarily have the patience or the time to play I'm more of an old school arcade jump in for about 30 minutes and then jump back out type of gamer now and if I do play an open world game or a role-playing game it probably takes me about 4 to 6 months to finish because I'm taking my time and I'm playing a bunch of arcade games in between so I can't say my habits and what I tolerate have changed in the last 3 to 4 years but I still have a passion for those same games even if I don't play them immediately

It's like you're dissecting each game bit by bit, and when you discover something new, it's like wow. Just turned 40 and my backlog is ridiculous. Getting organized has helped me a lot---especially in the age of digital collections (stopped collecting around PS3 era), because it's hard to keep track of what's on your shelf and what's in your Steam library (or whatever). That said, portable devices have changed the game. The Steam Deck and those Chinese Android/Linux handhelds have made churning through the backlog so much easier.

"Make time for the things you love". This is the best universal advice for any passion/hobby. I have a problem, I have too many hobbies(learning to play a music instrument, composing digital music, playing videogames, aquascaping, learning about neural networks). I obviously can't pursue all of my passions they're just too many. I'm in my early 40s with a toddler so that means leven ess free time and more work, it is surprising how destructive and messy toddlers are; they inhale order and exhale chaos.
I already let go the aquascaping hobby. I'm currently jus learning about neural networks and occasionally playing mobile games which are OK to catch that itch. For some reason learning about neural networks and AI is giving me dopamine hits and might help my career so I'm not giving that up but the rest of my hobbies are dead to me. It sucks having to sacrifice hobbies that made a huge part of my personality for decades. Adulting sucks balls

For me, games are just as valid an art form as movies and books. I see no reason why age should be a factor. I'm 33, married, have a 3 year old daughter and work full time. I don't get much time for gaming but man I love those 20 to 30 minutes those evenings when I get to settle down with a game.
Aside from having less time, the only really difference I noticed is that I'm far more open to using Easy mode in some games now. My primary reason for playing is for the stories and gameplay is becoming less important as my free time reduces.
Personally, I plan on gaming until the end. It's an interactive form of entertainment that directly engages my brain instead of having me just sit there staring at the screen. I love it

I have been gaming for 53 years!
I started gaming when gaming girls did not exist. I was 11 years old, and had to literally keep my arcade and game playing hidden. Girls were girls and girls were NOT allowed to ask for consoles, or games, or in some instances risked even being kicked out of an arcade. I am now 64 years old.
I have NEVER stopped gaming. I have 2 kids and am married. I always made sure that I was there for my family, I always made sure I was available and went outside, to work, on trips, living a full life, but I continued to always be a gamer. If you read a book, that is not different than my spending time on gaming. If you are off on your internet, I would be gaming. I still have my original Xbox hooked up because I do replay games like Max Payne. I have only my PS4 still hooked up, and took down my PS3 ages ago. I had to unplug my Xbox One because I needed the port for my Xbox Series X but its backward compatible anyway.
RPG stories were more exciting back in the day. They were so original. They may not always have had the best graphics but nowadays, there is so much emphasis on the graphics being beautiful the stories themselves are forgotten or redundant, and the lack of imagination making grinding just *yawn* or frustrating. For example the breakdown in the brilliance of the original Assassin's Creed games to what they are today.
This isn't a thing that is difficult. It is simply who you are - or not. The problem is there is a lot of prejudice, sexism and ageism around older gamers and that has been a challenge and a completely different discussion historically!!!
Really appreciate your expressed opinions and experiences in this video. Spot on with attitude and approach to games. You are also right about sometimes trying out a new genre, or returning to one you had lost connection to. Thank you!!!!

44 here. I have 3 kids, a professional career. I try to squeeze at least 1 hour in every night, but not consistent. If I didn’t have all these responsibilities I would game more. Because my time is limited, games that require a lot of time just aren’t fulfilling so I don’t play those games. I love WoW, Witcher 3, but I now play Overwatch, CS, Valorant because I can just pick up and drop it. But I was highly ranked in WoW Arena and End game raid, a few seasons even rank 1… but as much love I have for those games I just can’t play it anymore :(

I appreciate the suggestion of playing multiple games. When I was younger, I'd focus solely on one game until I beat it and then move on. But now days, trying to do that just creates a sense of obligation and rushing so that I can get to the next game, which ruins the experience for me and often leads me to not want to play games in general.
