this might be unrelated to the video but i stumbled upon your channel recently. and its really refreshing to see a "Game channel" that feel simple and comfy(?) since so many game channels nowdays tend to over edit and speaking with such hype voice (no hate towards it, to each their own) but for me those type of videos are just too distracting and i can't focus with them. but i always love watching videos that feel simple and the vlogger speaking with soft and calm voice that makes watching the video fun. I hope i phrased my thoughts the right way 😅 since english is not my native language. But love your channel and im glad youtube recommended it to me ! Subscribed 🩵
I have a hard time when it comes to free shipping. Not only I spend more money, but also time, as I search for the best set of games to bundle together. It's so anxiety inducing that sometimes I don't feel that good at the end. I'm really glad that you brought these topics 'cause I haven't seen many videos about them, at least, not with such honesty. It helped me a lot. Thank you so much!
I'm glad I was able to help! I find it helpful to hear others talk candidly about these topics, to recognize the pitfalls we all may be unconsciously falling into.
I just found your channel this week and I am really enjoying your content! You are so well spoken and I really enjoy all the videos that I have watched so far.
Another thing that you mentioned earlier is about the smaller prints. This really seems common to all publishers now days. Not even a few years ago it wasn't difficult to find a lot of games that dropped to $20 before I purchased them, both major and smaller publishers and because I buy so many games, I waited for these games. I didn't feel like I had to get anything early. It just seems that now days it's almost impossible to get most games for less than $30 now before they go out of print, especially from these niche publishers. It's like the limited release market has shown publishers that people are willing to pay a lot more for physical releases and they now just print a small quantity and just reprint their games rather than print a larger number, sort of keeping the dollar value of these games as high as possible. There's actually a few games that I'm interested in that went out of print without dropping in price a single time or if it did I didn't catch it. And I'm actually talking about indies(as well as the Trails releases you've recently mentioned.) It just seems like if you want to buy new that games are really starting to retain their value. Atleast games with the ESRB rating. I do think digital also has a big thing to do with it as well as there are a lot of g ames just not even released in the US but they do appear in Europe, but I do think that limited releases are showing that people are willing to pay high prices for physical games if they're forced to and if you do small reprints to keep prices high, that kind of forces peoples hands.
I can relate so much to this video! My Switch backlog is massive but I keep buying games because I convince myself It will cost me more in the future to purchase limited print games or I won't be able to get hold of them at all. I am also a sucker for a Switch sale. Moving forward I am trying to make more thought out choices. I also ordered Limited Run Blossom Tales 2, No Regrets though : ) I recently purchased a PSP 3000 console so I'm going to switch my focus (no pun intended lol) to PSP games. Really surprised how affordable the games are and there's some great titles for the system. I have 12 games so far.
I feel you on this. I feel compelled almost daily to pick up some of these new limited run style games because if I don’t I usually end up buying them a year later on eBay for twice the price. But for me I’m really trying to collect a lot of retro games that I ended up selling years ago. I’m still kicking myself for selling off many of my Genesis, PS1, NES, and Wii/Wii U games. Now I’m slowly curating and repurchasing all of them. But I’m also collecting for a system I never had before, the Game Cube. I feel your FOMO! My backlog is getting huge.
It's really difficult juggling so many different consoles all at once! With how expensive it is to collect most retro stuff nowadays and being inundated with a bunch of expensive modern options, it seems impossible to balance well 😅
Video Games Plus is definitely one of the better online stores to buy from. I can confirm that their customer service is A1! They’re such a godsend and I’ve been using them more than PlayAsia recently.
I'm so glad limited run switched to open preorder, but it seems like the quality of some of their collectors /limited editions is left wanting. And they're making SO many games and not all of them seem to be high quality, or what many people are anticipating... Or I could be wrong.
I use vgp more then playasia to my friend was doing the custom service for social media he now moved to another position within VGP and another person doing the custom service 😊
I've definitely slowed down on buying limited runs games. I think I've spent over $2000 this last year on them alone but I was kind of playing catch up since I got back into collecting. Thankfully, most of the games I bought from them are games I enjoy and own digitally so I didn't have too many regrets. One regret I do have is not buying more actually 😂. I got the Blossom Tales 2 Deluxe edition from them but I actually wish I had also bought the standard version as well for the cool cover. Now I have to settle for the Amazon cover. I wanted to have a standard copy to go alongside my copy of Blossom Tales 1, which I bought recently (not cheap). The Blossom Tales game are really good. Nice Chrono Trigger DS pickup- probably the greatest SNES game of all time. I also bought the Liar Princess reprint from VGP and you're right, every time I bought from them, I have to always add other games in to get the free shipping. Congrats on all the pickups
Ah you're stronger than me with all those pre-orders! After Blossom Tales 2 physical was announced I was looking at the first game prices and had some sticker shock 😂 And thank you!! Hope at least some of your LRG and other pre-orders arrived last/this month too :)
Thank you so much for mentioning the reprints of Trails to Zero and Trails to Azure! I thankfully placed my order for both just now on the last day of them taking orders!!! It has been torture hunting them in the US! So much so I settled for a loose copy of Trails from zero. Now I’ll be able to add the complete versions to my collection! You earned my sub for sure! Thank you so much!!!
Very cool pickups. I enjoyed hearing your reflection on fomo. I had fallen into fomo a lot last year and found that I was buying a ton of games that interested me but wasn't playing a lot. This year I haven't ordered very many games and find that I've been playing more and getting more invested in the games I'm playing. Super excited for Reverie though, and the mini games look so fun!
Thanks for another great video! I agree FOMO can be hard to resist. I cut down my buying by a lot because my backlog is too much and I have no Idea when I'll even have time to play some games 😅. I don't watch collection videos as much now so I don't feel like im missing out as much. I hope you don't feel the need to spend so much on gaming to keep us entertained. I can watch you talk about one game instead of a bunch and still would find it just as entertaining. Love the channel! Keep up the great work!
Thank you, I appreciate it! And haha I have a bit of a collecting addiction I'll admit, but I've been trying to be a bit more deliberate with my selections so we'll see what happens in the coming months 😂
I was actually over at Video games Plus in Toronto a few weeks ago, picked up a reprint of Blue Reflection 1. I chatted with some of the guys working that day about GUST/Atlas rpgs. It's cool to meet people passionate about Jrpgs. Loving your videos Emily, have a good one!
I’m so thrilled you picked up the Japanese version of Chrono Trigger, as I’ve been lamenting searching for a copy on eBay since it’s so expensive complete in box. At the end of the day, though I’d love an english manual, I care the most about playing and having some form of physical copy. Thanks Emily!
Another enjoyable video, thank you. One way I combat Switch limited run FOMO is to wishlist all the ones I might have impulsively bought. SO many of those limited titles end up on sale one time or another on the e shop. I know us physical collectors prefer to have the thing in our hands, but I've gotten so many of my grail items I'd simply never be able to afford otherwise. Knowing I'll be able to at least play the game sometime, probably no matter what, probably for as little as $2 really helps me not click that preorder button. That being said, I personally LOVED knowing I had games on the way to look forward to, and it helped me not go out to the stores. So different tactics depending on what your splurge trigger is, I guess? I gotta remember to pick up an import Chrono Trigger, that's such a good tip. I also just started playing PS2, first time using a PlayStation besides my PSP, which I'm still only barely getting to know. There's a ton of great titles on PS2, and I'm loving everything I've tried so far! Have a lovely week! - Hannah
Thank you, Hannah! I agree the wishlist method is a great way to curb FOMO! The limited preorder window ones are unfortunately the ones that get to me, but I'm hoping that I can ease up on that moving forward. I'm also hoping to move towards digital for indie games because of how much cheaper they are that way vs these physical copies at MSRP 😅 And ahh the PS2 has a such a great catalog. I have so many memories with the system as a kid, and have since learned about so many games that I never heard of back then. I'm hoping someday to boot up my OG fat PS2 and experience some of those games again. I hope you have a lovey week as well!
I am so happy when I see you recommend games that I've been thinking of playing too. We really have very similar interests in Games. Opus trilogy is one of my next plays!
Really love your reflective stance on game collecting. So many quality titles being released. Now if you add titles from the past to that steady stream it can become quit overwhelming, both from a time and monwy management perspective. Random thoughts: I wouldn't worry about starting at FFVI (yes the best). This compilation exemplifies how ridiculous it gets: were talking about 7 years of releases on a single cart. It's impossible to take it all at once while still playing newer titles. Whatever you do though, play with headphones. The music elevates tenfold wherever you start at. PS2 collecting: be cautious. Are you looking for game displaying or having fun playing? I've bough a lot of systems and games since the NES; unless you're a hardcore retro gamer, it becomes harder every year to play on older systems. Modern game design and quality of life features slowly creates habits and expectations that are hard to shake off when you go back in the past. Keep it up!
omg, im playing thru FF4 on my switch right now, did the first 3. Really enjoying the pixel remaster but im not a physical collector so just bought it on nintendo store. If you happen to want less grinding the boost exp/gil options make it easier to play through which is nice. hope you get to it one day!
Awesome video again Emily! Thanks for being so transparent with collecting - honestly since having a disposable income my buying habits for the switch when I really reflect on them are signals for how in control I feel. Huge paper, with little time for friends and family I buy a game. Work assignments adding up I buy a game, finished a work assignment - buy a game. Not assigning a "bad" to this trend of mine just observing my patterns like you stated. Like you I'm trying to ease up on purchasing day one & limited copies and really being honest with myself and asking "will I play this - will I love it?" I'm currently saving for the Ayaneo 2S for emulation and PC games so I'm trying to release the death grip physical has on me😬 and trying to buy digital when things are super discounted. My game library is huge and though I'm young I don't have forever to play them. Plus I love replaying games so I'm really trying to cut back - best of luck to the both of us!😁
Oh I've been considering one of the new handheld streaming/emulation devices too. As much as I love physical media too I think it makes sense to shift those titles more towards that system instead of buying marked up physical copies. And yes, best of luck to us both with navigating this lol :)
As a RPG fan, I completely understand your issue. Scalpers have totally made this hobby insane. I finally said F fomo and wait to see if it’s something I actually want. Yes you pay more for it, but if you think about the purchase for a period of time… you start to see that you really didn’t need it. You do save in the end.
great video Emily, i'm glad you talked about FOMO and recognizing it. I learned over the past few years that I didn't need to get every game right away and to only get games if i know I will play them right away and otherwise wait till they are on sale. But also I'm really jealous of all the cool games you got so 🤔
One thing I did to check my fomo purchases, was to keep it console limited. I purchased a shameful amount of limited run Switch games, most of which I will never play. At current though, I keep myself limited to Genesis games only. Those for sure, I will play and enjoy.
Great pickups, Emily! I snagged Valkyrie Elysium for relatively cheap not too long ago. Square-Enix has put out SO many JRPGs recently (Tactics Ogre Remaster and Star Ocean Divine Force being a few others), and I've found it difficult not to buy them given the sale prices. The FOMO is real 😅 Speaking of FOMO, Trinity Trigger was a game that I had on pre-order because it came with a nice box, was a JRPG, and was only $60. After watching more gameplay I realized it was worth passing on and keeping that shelf space for a game I'd enjoy more. The research prior to buying definitely helps. Really enjoyed hearing your perspective on the FOMO side of things as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Rusty! Square Enix really went all out last year with JRPG releases and I'm still trying to catch up lol. I heard mixed things about Trinity Trigger as well and planning to wait perhaps for a discounted standard edition down the line. It was a game I was looking forward to as well but after the reviews it sort of dropped down my priority list.
Great video as always, Emily. ❤ I’ve been playing through TOTK myself lately, but at a very slow pace because of how busy my life has been with grad school these past few weeks. Also 200 Switch games. Wow.
It's accumulated to a lot lol. TotK is a game I think I'll be playing throughout the year - it's just so massive haha. Oh and best of luck with grad school! I know from experience everything can be difficult to juggle during that time :)
VGP has quickly become my favorite store to buy physical games from. I've been able to complete my NA Trails Switch collection thanks to their reprints. Highly recommend all collectors keep an eye on their site!
I have definitely felt the trap of FOMO in the past, so I'm now trying to downsize my collection. And I totally hear you on selling games being difficult, I've held off on doing it for so long because it takes some work.
Ara Fell and 3rd Power was a good purchase in my view. I had no idea it had been finished yet since i ordered a switch and PS4 copy. It will be harder to find i believe so i feel that was definitely a winner. You got a number of great titles here Emily. I think you did great. I am also waiting for the Reverie Limited Edition for PS5. It will be so worth it!
Nice haul Emily, I like how you always introduce me to a whole bunch of games I’ve not heard of. Let us know how you get on with Valkyrie - its not life changing but I had a lot of fun with it. I think you’ll find FFI a quite manageable experience. Its not huge and has some nice quality of life touches like being able to toggle encounters on and off which makes dungeon navigation much quicker. It also has a fantastic soundtrack, like most Japanese titles I’ve played.
Have the same FOMO issue. Just upgraded my launch Switch to the Zelda OLED model, ordered the Zelda pro controller and collector's edition as well. Then I see the Etrian Odyssey collection on VGP so I have to order it so I don't miss out on it and have a physical copy in my collection - just as I got the Asian version of Final Fantasy collection in the mail and an email from Limited Run games of closing pre-orders.... I definitely gotten better over the years. Nowadays I do wait for games to drop to the bargin bin, unless it's a title I expect to play right away or have been waiting on for years. But some games like like the Limited Run games do slip through and I end up ordering.... Edit: Happy to report I did not order from Limited Run games, I managed to overcome my FOMO and did not order.
Regarding FOMO, I know that it can sometimes snowball and it becomes just a habit to buy thing immediately "just in case". I tend to be strict on new releases while spending a little more on re-releases of older classic games (from a period when I wasn't collecting) which hopefully puts a natural upper limit. I think I must be lucky to be somewhat oblivious to these limited run companies! Just jumping in on the Final Fantasy topic, I think if you want to find a compromise with being thorough versus avoiding burnout you could probably start at 4 and then do 5 and 6. 4 is when the series really started to get its own identity and step out of Dragon Quest's shadow. 2 and 3 are nothing to shout about, 1 is decent but feels a little generic compared to some of its contemporaries (e.g. Phantasy Star, Dragon Quest 3). I'm not sure of your experience with Final Fantasy (I know you don't discuss the series on the channel that much) but if you were looking for an entry point into the series then 6 does a really good job of showing a lot of what makes the series so special such as the unconventional pacing and willingness to experiment with battle systems (9 and 7 Remake are good starting points also).
Thanks for the play order suggestions for the FF titles! The only FF game I've played is XII actually, with a little bit of X and about half of the VII original. It's a series I've been meaning to get more into but keep pushing back on the backlog 😂😅
Final fantasy remasters is something i intend to order someday. I got to thinking about it and you can now get 1 through 12 on physical cartridge for switch which is pretty cool if you ask me. Of course ff6 is highly regarded by many people including myself. However i think ff4 has a great story with cecil the dark knight, a story with some twists here and there. Also ff5 is really cool because of the job system. You can master abilities from one class and later equip abilities from a second class, really cool stuff. Also i think ff4 you can have up to 5 characters in battle, kinda cool.
My three main vectors for FOMO purchases: 1. Throwback Horror Games (i.e. games with PS1 style graphics) 2. Sega Genesis Style Beat Em Ups (i.e. Final Fight / Streets of Rage Clones) 3. Games with Sassy Redhead Protagonists
The beginning segment of your video has me infinitely hyped Emily, ahhh, let's goo!! Lol. Welcome soonish to the PS5 family! I genuinely am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the system itself, specially the stellar controller and the games alike! Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart i feel will truly demonstrate what the system can do, including every facet of it - that meaning the controller, and just the sheer magic of the experience as a whole :) This really was such an enjoyable video! All your pick ups were amazing and as always, stellar job Emily!
I'm really looking forward to being back on a traditional console. I've dabbled with the PS4 but it'll be nice to have the PS5 readily accessible & get to experience all the new enhancements :)
@@orbalology you should research more into ps5. There are rumors of a ps5 redesign this Fall. It may not be more powerful but may be more compact. But there could be a chance the redesign may still be more powerful. I don’t know if the rumors are true but worth looking into
I also picked up a JP copy of Chrono Trigger on the DS this past month because of your video! The price difference between the one we bought and a NA copy is just silly. Thanks for making me aware! I already have Chrono Trigger for the PS1, but having it in my backpack is very cool.
The stupid, extremely limited prints, crazy scalper prices, and some publishers (*cough limitedrungames cough*) just generally overcharging to own a physical copy, actually pushed me back towards primarily PC gaming. It took some getting used to appreciating a digital collection, but with the amount of money I was spending and the frustration of constantly feeling like I was buying and playing the games that I was "forced" to buy, due to all the "buy it now or miss out forever" stuff, it was really just making things needlessly stressful for me. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if I was getting into it more recently, but being old enough to remember the glory days of physical games/videogame collecting, it all just feels so different now.... still enjoy the videos and putting all the games and art and stuff I like together on my hard drives, and finding deals this way though, at least :) (If life ever takes me to Japan I might get back to physical collecting again though. Over there, I'm guessing, I'd enjoy things more, since most the games I like are really cheap and well taken care of, rather than paying over $200 for a banged up copy of Xenogears that's missing the instruction manual or something :p )
I just started collecting physical games, mainly for switch and the fomo is hitting me hard lol I’m seeing games that I want that are getting hard to find or just price hikes. I think I may need a side hustle lol Collecting is definitely fun but can be expensive. Thanks for the videos!
It can be so easy to get caught into those FOMO traps early on in your collecting journey (and continue to fall into them like I have lol). I've had to resell a lot of my other hobby items to help fund my game collecting - so a side hustle may not be a bad idea :)
So awesome that you got the final fantasy pixel remastered collection for switch. That's really great that you finally got the correct game. I remember that situation when you did that video.
I have really slowed down on limited print purchases, the last ones I supported backfired hard (Deaths Door and Ender Lilies). If something exceptional pops up I'll likely pre-order but lately I've had no interest in most of the companies' offerings. I will say that I do have a FOMO issue with scale figures. I finally caved and pre-ordered Fie after Falcom stated she'd be closing soon, I spent at least two months fighting the urge. Scale figures and other goods from Amiami have really been cutting down on my game spending funds despite being all gaming related merchandise.
Ara Fell & Rise of The Third Power was a great purchase imo. I always wanted to expand my collection & horizon of RPGs so that’s a win for me. I totally agree with your points on FOMO some games just skyrocket in price after release. This year I’m not really going to purchase like I did in 2022. Great pickups and video btw.
I definitely have trouble with F.O.M.O. I hit the proverbial wall when I hit 50 switch games in it’s first year and a half. I didn’t open them until I got around to playing them. My nephews came over and was like wtf, you have like 30 games that aren’t even opened. I stopped buying switch games just to buy them. And since got a ps5 and have an unwritten rule to myself to purchase only when I’m ready to play. So I only have a handful of ps5 games so far with a couple platinums and a couple close to reaching a good ending point. I want to get more out of the games I purchase. Your videos have helped me combat fomo
I'm missing out a lot, including that Liar Princess and Blind Prince 😅 About your plan on starting to collect retro games, do some research before purchasing because many old games got remaster/remake treatment these days..
I have subscriptions for Xbox Live Gold, PlayStation Plus Essential and Humble Choice. Add in free games every week from Epic Game Store and Prime Gaming and I get a lot of digital indies. I usually don’t buy physical indies except for certain ones I am especially excited for (Golf Story, Shantae series). Most of my collecting funds are spent on retro games for multiple systems. I usually only buy current games during the holidays when huge sales happen I tend to save a ton on current games by doing this. I have only preordered a couple games in all my time collecting and they were very specific cases. The Old Republic was one of these as I was extremely hyped to get the game (and special Collector’s Edition).
We've been enjoying watching you spend money 🤑. I remember buying a number of beat em ups from limited run when I was pumped up about streets of rage 4. Slight regret but it happens and can be part of the fun as long as one is housed, fed and clothed. Take care. 😎💙
I can relate to your feelings on FOMO and sometimes feel a bit bad about how big my backlog is. With a lot of niche JRPG franchises and retro Nintendo games it does seem like its better to buy them sooner than later as you kind of mentioned though. Its crazy how quickly the prices go up these days. Nice pickups and video.
I think a lot of us like buying with the thought of getting to it someday even if it doesn't come (I bought 4 games last January, have not touched a single one because I decided to finish a game I had started). I keep rewatching Sanaastoria's anti-haul video because I have to keep reminding myself why I shouldn't buy. Even then, I still had to pre-order the Front Mission re-release because I want that franchise to have a physical release. Because of that, I told myself not to buy TotK until I get through at least 3 games (I have 2 games to go). That game will be a timesink for people like me who always goes back to town when I run out of arrows/have enough pieces for a new heart container/finished a quest/etc 😂
I think you are feeling exactly how I did a few years ago. I never really suffered from FOMO in gaming until the Switch. Companies definitely aren’t producing as large numbers of niche physical games as they push towards digital sales but demand for physical Switch games has increased. I’ve never considered myself a collector despite having a large number of physical games. Although most of my games were bought at a heavily discounted price (which in itself can add to FOMO), I suddenly realised just how much I was spending which made me feel buyers remorse. It was my husband that made feel some kind of sense and logic as he’s a a physical game purchaser himself. Today I only buy official local releases (no Asian imports or Limited Run stuff that never satisfy me) and only games I know I will enjoy more than once and take pride in owning. As we don’t have anything like a VGP service here in the U.K. I buy early at a discounted price or wait for games I know will receive discounts due to large production runs. The end result is no guilt, a tightly curated collection and a lighter credit card balance. 😊
Your thoughts on FOMO are so true. Learning to resist it is good for your mental health as well as your bank balance. It's quite ironic you cite Butterfly's Poison, it's now coming to Steam this month so now that game will be more accessible digitally. Although now it means the Japanese physical is going out of print again :') NISA's physical games are also still widely available in Europe (including the Crossbell games), so importing from Europe is possible too. I'm guessing Reef Entertainment (the EU distributor of NISA, IFI, KT and Aksys titles) has a lot to do with it.
It's nice to have games more accessible on Steam, especially these niche titles. But it is rather sad that this usually means the physical will be more difficult to come by 🥲 And that's interesting about the differences between NIS America & Europe! I'm glad they have more copies of the Crossbell games because I know that reprints for older titles can be harder to come by over there. Or that's at least from my casual observation.
@@orbalology Some titles are better available in Europe. For example, all Trails games on the Switch and PS4. Some indie publishers are from Europe, so it is easier to buy directly from them than to wait for LRG: Red Art Games, Pix'n'Love, Pixel Heart, Inin (Strictly Limited Games), Clear River Games, etc. Just be aware that some editions contain non-english text on the back side of the cover. It is especially annoying with German releases which contain a huge ugly USK stamp on the front cover :-( I always avoid them like plague.
FF6 is definitely not a favourite for me, so just depends on your taste. Out of the older ones, I LOVE 4 WAY more. Still need to play 1, 2, 3, and 5. But 6 isn't in my top at all so playing it first may be fine for you! It's a great game, but it's just not my thing. Great pickups video - I am really interested in those otome games!!! I want a more adult one myself, some of them are just too light and fluffy and I need some more smut haha
Nice video and thanks for the tip about Chrono Trigger for the DS. As for FOMO, yes I have occasionally fallen into that, especially if I see something on those top 10 list of great JRPG that no one played..."oh, I can still get a physical copy so I have to have it NOW". I am hoping to visit Video Game Plus' physical location later in the summer, and I'll need to leave any FOMO at the border 🙂
I've accepted that I missed the boat on series like Trails and Ys and will never have a physical collection of them. But collecting arcade shoot 'em ups has been a minefield of limited print runs and imports too. And they absolutely arrive in bursts. I'm scheduled to have like a dozen games arrive in July, despite ordering them gradually over the last year and a half.
@@orbalology Thanks! A couple are gambles, but am feeling pretty good about most of them. Biggest gamble is probably Atelier Marie Remake, one of the few non-shmups on the list. No idea if it'll be any good. Should've waited. Total completionist purchase.
Firstly I think you had a good pickup month in May. Nothing to be ashamed about. I think you'll really enjoy Arcfell and blossom tales. I also wrote that a few for my wish list.
Nice! You got Trails into Reverie for PS5 limited edition as well? (I was going back and forth between Switch and PS5, but I got my PS5 about a year ago for Soul Hackers 2 and have barely even looked at it. I wish I bought Octopath 2 for the PS5 after seeing the difference in smoothness of the graphics.) You didn't go ahead and get the plushies? Between you and my friend talking about the series, I've really developed an appreciation for Trails. I finished Zero, and now I'm playing Cold Steel I. I ended up putting in an order for the Vita editions of Sky for all three which should be arriving soon. CS1 is amazing, and the plot is so far reaching across the series from what I can tell that I have to take notes after powering through four hours of it a night or so. The story is so intricate and incredible and I've only scratched the surface... I have to take notes to keep everything straight and not forget details because there are so many. I think I see Trails of Cold Steel III - Thors Academy Edition on your shelf... I'm looking at copies of it as it's the only CE that I won't have in a few weeks in the series, and it's expensive on eBay! ($250 - $350 or so.) I know you're probably so busy with work and gaming and collecting, but have you considered learning Japanese (or do you already know it) so you can play JRPGs in their original language? I'm studying it now and it's going well. (Then again, I already speak Mandarin, so the kanji are largely familiar to me.) As a gay guy, I've played a lot of BL VNs, and they tend to be very explicit... sometimes cringingly so. Great video as always! Take care!
Emily wonderful video! I just want to say I feel the same about owning many switch games and now want to focus on older titles. I have made an excel of switch games I would like to own and will return to that one day but I have been picking up Super Nintendo games these past couple of months. I made a 2023 new years goal not to fall for FOMO in games. I have been really good about it (except on totk stuff). It’s hard to break that cycle because I know these games go up in price. Looking forward to the next video! Have a nice week :)
I'm glad to hear you've been able to curb your FOMO so far this year! I agree the cycle can be really difficult to change but prioritizing other games/systems/other hobby items will hopefully be enough incentive to help steer me in that direction as well. Hope you have a lovely week too :)
I've totally gone through the same FOMO regret process myself haha. I have 70+ physical switch games, plus a modest collection of 3ds and DS games that I really like (entire DQ, Professor Layton, Ace Attorney series, etc). I was buying a bunch of long RPGs and got to the point where I panicked after seeing how my total time to completion on HLTB lol. Getting a steam deck really eased my anxiety on "missing" Indie physicals, I can always just play them on PC and buy them physical aftermarket if I REALLY liked them. Now I have a rule that I focus mostly on retail games that I want to play ASAP, with a couple exceptions for stuff like Trails where I know it'll go out of print easily (I bought both Crossbell games, and will be buying Nayuta on release, but that's it). I don't plan on buying Reverie since it bothers me that Switch doesn't have all the Cold Steel games in English. I feel like i already have too many games now, so I try to stick to games I know I'll 100% enjoy. Ironically, waiting for retail Indie releases has turned out for the best, because I hate waiting for the Limited print companies to deliver. I've gotten into collecting light novels and manga too, and both my bookshelves and wallet are crying 😂
Haha, I collect probably way too many things in various hobbies so I totally understand having a constant battle with the wallet & shelf space. It's never-ending 😂 I've been considering the steam deck for similar reasons actually. While I love physical media there are so many short indie titles that I probably don't need to own physically & would be better suited on a device like the steam deck (not to mention cheaper in the long run when factoring in digital sales). With more companies releasing streaming devices I'm hoping Valve will release a revised slimmer version - if they do I'll instantly buy it lol.
Blossom Tales 2 and Ara Fell both look great takes on a throwback style, I wouldn't regret having those in my collection. FOMO can definitely put a lot of pressure on buying games though, once something's second-hand price starts to spike it can make you feel foolish for not buying it earlier.
They are considered quality games, so it probably was a good call to pick them up. I just feel like I'm stuck in this FOMO cycle with all these limited print distribution companies that I've been trying to break out of lol.
Buying a game because of a discounted steel book at Best Buy because I can't pass up on - that thought process added many collector's editions to my shelves over the years! xD Clannad is one of my favourite visual novels of all time, alongside Steins;Gate and 999. One thing I truly appreciate about the Nintendo Switch edition of Clannad is the size of the font used in the game. It makes playing the game in handheld mode so much easier. Too many games these days optimize the size for docked mode. As always, thank you for another great video! :3
Oh that's nice to know about the Switch version for Clannad! I always appreciate when they offer larger font sizes to make the experience in handheld. And thanks for watching :)
Great pickups I also bought Valkyrie Elysium in may I haven’t tried it yet but I hope it is fun! Most of my time spent has been with Zelda Tears of the kingdom it has been fantastic so far. I have also preordered Trails into Reverie I have been waiting so long to play it. I hope you enjoy your pickups for the month!
Great pick ups Emily. About the Switch version of Trails into Reverie. So this will not be the case like Trails of Azure where the Switch version was the best one compared to the PlayStation one? Is very confusing to follow the performance of each each game of this saga. I ask because for the moment I have every of the latest Trails game on my Switch. It would be weird to get one for another system. Also don't question if you have to sell some limited games that you bought and your didn't like it. I done that a few times because I just don't feel comfortable having games in my collection that I don't like. Now what I do with some of announced limited games if they already exist on Steam I read the comments or sometime I buy them on sale to try them out before I pre-oder.
Trails to Azure was a special case because it was originally a PSP game, and had a PS Vita remake in Japan. A lot of the enhancements they included on the Switch couldn't translate to the PS4 version for whatever reason, but this won't be the case for Reverie from my understanding because that originally came out on the PS4 in Japan a few years ago. I can't speak on the Switch performance for Reverie just yet but the Cold Steel 3 & 4 games have mixed performance on the Switch, so that may or not be the case with Reverie too.
Hello Emily, Thank you for giving us your perspective on FOMO. I definitely related alot to what you said and found myself shaking my head in agreement with your points as I was cleaning the house 😅. It's a tough balance for sure. Alittle tip on getting a ps5. A final fantasy bundle should be releasing for the upcoming game. Maybe wait until then to pick one up? Always enjoy your videos and hope you have a great sunday!!!
That may be something to consider! Though that just comes with the game code right? So I'm unsure whether that's a good idea to get or not because I plan to grab a physical copy for that eventually. And thanks, hope you have a great Sunday as well :)
The background is becoming colorful each month. As you purchase and put those figures in your shelf (we know it’s a sickness, you just can’t stop. speaking from experience 😂), maybe change what shelf you display. Love to see your collection grow and how you arrange them.
Ha, I've been considering moving my chair around to various locations along the shelves for filming, or attempt standing in some videos but my tripod has a limited range in this section of the room 😂
I did not know that the Japanese Chrono Trigger is in English, I have been trying to get a copy and it’s just been so expensive. I did not know Arafell came out already, hate preordering more than one game, delays my entire order 😢 Great video as always Emily!
Thanks Alie! Hope you can pickup the Japanese Chrono Trigger DS on the cheap - it's really a nice alternative that not enough folks talk about these days. I have a few other LRG games still in limbo too, the long waits can really dampen the excitement sometimes 😅
While this is true, I usually feel bad about giving into FOMO because it's diverting funds away from things that I would enjoy more. So I've been trying to balance this better :)
FOMO hurts yourself. I was really bad with it but recently I got scammed out of €700 because of my FOMO (luckily it got refunded). That helped put things in perspective and I realised how much anxiety FOMO was causing me. Since then I’ve been able to let go of it.
Great pick ups!! Its funny you mentioned FOMO. I think this is the first time since I started collecting, but there is alot of stuff thats on my list but I just feel a bit burnt out that I cant even bother buying anything atm. I also stopped following pretty much every lim print companies. I dont wanna waste my money anymore. Especially when alot of them get retail releases in other regions and I just dont wanna have these companies essentially hold my money hostage for months on end. Ive been thinking about those legend of heroes reprints from VGP and I think for a few reasons one of them being that ToCS 1 and 2 havent been localized yet, that I cant be bothered. Part of me feels like I'm crazy cause I know I will really like the trails games. But I also feel like I dont have to grab everything and I can just pass on these. Its not like I dont have stuff to play. I think in terms of combating FOMO, one thing I've really been considering is just not collecting beyond thr Switch and just focus on DS, 3DS, Vita and Switch. I'm just overall a bit drained from trying to keep up. 🙃🙃🙃 Great video as always!
I think that's all understandable, especially as someone who enjoys collecting complete sets as well. I feel like there are cycles to collecting that can play a role in this as well. There are times where we want to prioritize building up our collection and other times that it loses it's appeal or we have other things we would rather prioritize. And I think in recent times with all the physical reprints & remasters skipping out on games that we may not get to anytime soon isn't always that bad, as there will likely be ways to obtain or at least play many of these in the future.
Haha, you sound so ashamed. Don't worry, we've all been there. 😅 I'm actually a bit jealous of your physical Anno Mutationem. It's simple side-scrolling action, as you said, but the pixel art is top notch and the world it paints is really interesting. It isn't too long either, so it's a great palate cleanser, as Derek would say!
Love this video. I realised last year that I was buying games through FOMO and rather than being happy when the games arrived, I’d feel upset with myself for buying them. Now I’ve started to pass on games and it feels great. I find it hard, but the games that are arriving now are ones I really want to play and enjoy. Ps. I’m still waiting for my Final Fantasy pixel remaster to arrive. I’m starting with 6. :-)
Thanks! It's really hard to resist FOMO, but I'm glad to hear it's been working for you so far. And hopefully you'll receive your FF Pixel Remaster copy soon :)
I picked up the collectors edition of Zelda TOTK and the pro controller plus a regular copy as well. I also got Prodeus Puzzle Bubble for the Switch I picked up a GBA SP 101 model and also a YSIX as well. I’m in the same boat as you too many titles playing very little of them it’s hard to find time where you can sit down and do a good session of playing.
One thing I've ran into with pre-orders, at least when it comes to physical books, is there been times where I could get the book from a store sooner than waiting on the pre-order. I think the main reason is the book stores already have them a day or two prior to being officially released while the pre-orders only get shipped the day of the actual release. I don't think I usually have a problem with FOMO most of the time. The hard part I have is wanting something for months but can't get it due to finances. Once I get the money than I may go crazy and try to play catch up on whatever it may be. Best of luck on getting the older games. I'm uneasy of buying used games due to the quality of the game cartridge\medium. The other interesting thing with used games is finding old save files on them which may or may not help you depending on how many saved files the game can have.
Yeah I've seen a lot of online order pre-orders not arriving on time which has been unfortunate when you want to play day 1. Used older games can be a mixed bag, but I agree it can be fun to look at old save files and see what happened on someone else's playthrough.
Picked up my Chrono trigger recently as well, English version over in Connecticut from a game store there while on a road trip. Cost me 100 dollars, but had some stuff to trade in after buying a lot. Under 40 dollars. But that’s nice to know about the region free version.
There are benefits to getting ahold of the ESRB version - it should be more likely to retain it's value since that's the more desirable version over here :)
My oled got stolen in Orange County CA while visiting our kids for Christmas. The case it was in had all three Bayonettas, trail from zero, along with like 10 other games. I got a new oled when the Zelda totk oled came out but I cannot find trails to zero or Bayonetta 2 anywhere
Hey Emily , some nice pickups . The oled switch is pretty cool . I buy a lot online and 2nd hand games for ps5 to save money and grow collection of ps5
Totally agree Dr. Emily about Zelda. TotK is great but the older more linear style games were still masterpieces. Now there's nothing quite filling that void and may never be again.
Hi emily. Games i got last month: Chrono trigger ds (us version, so expensive) Cereza and the lost demon (switch physical) Atelier sophie 2 (switch physical) Indivisible (switch physical) Tales of arise (xbox digital) Scarlet nexus (xbox digital)
I already had trails from zero, but picked up a copy of trails to azure from VGP. I wasn't paying $100 on eBay, so this was great. I am keeping an eye out for a mention of suikoden 1&2. Really want that physically to add to my switch collection.
ive probably commented before, but ive had to curb my FOMO big time! i used to buy 95% of rpgs on switch, but there are more releasing than i could ever keep up with, and i get OCD if my backlog gets too out of control. but i have been picking up games im not quite ready for but still want to play eventually, only because of how rare physical can get for switch in just a month.
Thank you for letting us know about that VGP reprint. I was missing trails IV, so I bought it 😄. If you only got time to play one of those of final fantasy games and don't want to play FFVI, I would highly recommend playing FFIV. Those limited print companies feed off your FOMO... I buy them too. Also, do I hear trails music in the background 😶🌫?
I'm glad that VGP made the effort to secure these Trails reprints! They've really become such a valued store in the collecting scene. And I've been hearing a lot of good things about FFIV so I'll be sure to give that one a try as well :) And yup after getting some of the Trails soundtracks from Japan last month I've been inserting lots of tracks into my video backgrounds 😂
If you just read this, this is fine by me. I know you only said 1 per comment if you get to them etc. I love the fact that you acknowledge that you have an anxiety problem & that you go into great details explaining your issues in this vid on how you shouldn't have bought things etc. I don't know you personally so I don't know if you do have anxiety or fomo problems. Hopefully fomo means anxiety, I just looked it up. It's your money, your decision so do whatever you want. Gaming is a real addiction though. I remember when I was younger I used to blow my money in arcades. Like a $20 a day or more. Trust me $20 was a lot of money back then in like 1990's. Probably lack of knowledge of things that I had too. I said in the previous comment I try to wait for prices to lower. Don't think for 1 sec that it's easy for me not to play RE 4 remake. I want to play that so badly. 3 times I passed by Walmart to buy a $100 PSN card, I said yeah but I got like 6 games to beat. Again it's just a feeling you get. There is no quick solution for stopping. Just try the best you can, & hopefully you achieve that small goal little by little.
You are making a lot of assumptions about me... and honestly the few comments you have left in previous videos have been awfully patronizing. I've explained in my prior videos that I am quite financially literate/responsible, and most of my hobby spending is generated through side hustles such as reselling my other hobby items. So my hobbies fund my hobbies. Collecting is not so much a matter of an addiction for me, but I still have moments of fomo around the hobby because of how quickly we've been seeing prices increase on older and newer games. So I want to be able to optimize my hobby fund in a way that I feel content at the end of the day.
@@orbalology You're totally right. I have been making assumptions, I am truly sorry. Yes I have seen your other vids where you explained exactly what you are mentioning here. Again thank you for your explanation here. I'll try to be more positive moving fwd.
this might be unrelated to the video but i stumbled upon your channel recently.
and its really refreshing to see a "Game channel" that feel simple and comfy(?) since so many game channels nowdays tend to over edit and speaking with such hype voice (no hate towards it, to each their own) but for me those type of videos are just too distracting and i can't focus with them.
but i always love watching videos that feel simple and the vlogger speaking with soft and calm voice that makes watching the video fun.
I hope i phrased my thoughts the right way 😅 since english is not my native language. But love your channel and im glad youtube recommended it to me ! Subscribed 🩵
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it :)
I think a lot of people feel that way. I once bought a $20 pair of socks to hit free shipping.
@@orbalology my father always told me: “Don’t go broke saving money”
I just found your channel this week and I am really enjoying your content! You are so well spoken and I really enjoy all the videos that I have watched so far.
Thank you so much, I appreciate it :)
15:05 the cover art inside and out on that game is beautiful 🥹🩷
Fun video! Your hair always looks incredible Emily!
Thank you, Wilmer :)
I can relate so much to this video!
My Switch backlog is massive but I keep buying games because I convince myself It will cost me more in the future to purchase limited print games or I won't be able to get hold of them at all. I am also a sucker for a Switch sale. Moving forward I am trying to make more thought out choices.
I also ordered Limited Run Blossom Tales 2, No Regrets though : )
I recently purchased a PSP 3000 console so I'm going to switch my focus (no pun intended lol) to PSP games. Really surprised how affordable the games are and there's some great titles for the system. I have 12 games so far.
“Lots of age gaps and forbidden love” lol 10/10
They're really great! And so convenient especially for those in the US because of fast shipping times (& not worrying about additional sales tax lol).
I'm so glad limited run switched to open preorder, but it seems like the quality of some of their collectors /limited editions is left wanting. And they're making SO many games and not all of them seem to be high quality, or what many people are anticipating... Or I could be wrong.
If you are buying a ps5 I would tell you to get the god of war Ragnarok bundle because it is literally a free game even if you don't like it.
After Blossom Tales 2 physical was announced I was looking at the first game prices and had some sticker shock 😂
And thank you!!
I’ve learned so much from games i didn’t even know have come out lol
I didn’t even know about vgp or that ff pixel remaster. Thanks!
I think its rlly cool you talk about fomo! I needed to hear that thank u!
Thanks! I'm super pumped for Reverie too, and agreed the mini games look fun :)
Ah nice, glad you were able to grab the reprint for the first Blue Reflection in person! And thank you, hope you have a great rest of the day too :)
Cool , informative and entertaining video you have and I am really enjoying it 😄
Thank you 😊
Don’t feel bad for treating yourself I’ve fell into this trap many times you’re not alone
I'm also hoping to move towards digital for indie games because of how much cheaper they are that way vs these physical copies at MSRP 😅
And ahh the PS2 has a such a great catalog.
Thanks for showing off your sweet pickups. You look great in blue!
But also I'm really jealous of all the cool games you got so 🤔
Ha, thanks. I feel like collecting can be a vicious cycle. That's part of the fun but it can also add some unnecessary stress lol.
The free steelbooks at Best Buy has made us all collectors whether we want to be or not lol
lol, this is true.
Definitely, especially when they’re such gorgeous designs like the Octopath II and aforementioned Valkyrie ones 👌
Thanks for going over the reprints! Good info!
Love your videos! I always see games I’ve never heard of before and that’s a good thing.
The FOMO is real 😅
Speaking of FOMO, Trinity Trigger was a game that I had on pre-order because it came with a nice box, was a JRPG, and was only $60.
Thanks, Emily. 😁 I really appreciate that.
I love your in depth videos very informative. I enjoy collecting my favourite games for the switch.
Great video, as always!
Great video! I’ve been grabbing Switch and retro mostly…. recent pickups… for switch: DeathSmiles 1&2, final vendetta, collection of mana, metroid prime remastered… retro titles… image fight CIB (famicom), Cyber core complete (TG16), galaga 90 complete (TG16), RType loose (TG16)…
My three main vectors for FOMO purchases:
1. Throwback Horror Games (i.e. games with PS1 style graphics)
2. Sega Genesis Style Beat Em Ups (i.e. Final Fight / Streets of Rage Clones)
Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart i feel will truly demonstrate what the system can do, including every facet of it - that meaning the controller, and just the sheer magic of the experience as a whole :)
This really was such an enjoyable video!
Glad you were able to snag a cheaper alterative of Chrono Trigger too! It's really such a nice game to have portably :)
Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad if I was getting into it more recently, but being old enough to remember the glory days of physical games/videogame collecting, it all just feels so different now.... still enjoy the videos and putting all the games and art and stuff I like together on my hard drives, and finding deals this way though, at least :)
(If life ever takes me to Japan I might get back to physical collecting again though. Over there, I'm guessing, I'd enjoy things more, since most the games I like are really cheap and well taken care of, rather than paying over $200 for a banged up copy of Xenogears that's missing the instruction manual or something :p )
Fire pickups Emily! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you :)
Thanks! It's been a relief to finally have the correct version for the Liar Princes/Blind Prince game lol.
Navigating the game collecting space can be quite tricky! A lot of it feels like guesswork which complicates everything 😅 And thank you :)
Thank you for also helping me with my FOMO therapy! We're all humans! :)
Although now it means the Japanese physical is going out of print again :')
NISA's physical games are also still widely available in Europe (including the Crossbell games), so importing from Europe is possible too. I'm guessing Reef Entertainment (the EU distributor of NISA, IFI, KT and Aksys titles) has a lot to do with it.
It's nice to have games more accessible on Steam, especially these niche titles. But it is rather sad that this usually means the physical will be more difficult to come by 🥲
And that's interesting about the differences between NIS America & Europe!
Give 5 a try and see how you like it. I definitely like it more than 4 and 6. 🙃
Hmmm...not sure if you have played Valkyrie Profile, it's also really good. The soundtracks are really amazing. Happy gaming 😊😊😊
That sounds amazing and terrifying at the same time lol. Hope the physical copies for them turn out well!
($250 - $350 or so.)
I know you're probably so busy with work and gaming and collecting, but have you considered learning Japanese (or do you already know it) so you can play JRPGs in their original language? I'm studying it now and it's going well. (Then again, I already speak Mandarin, so the kanji are largely familiar to me.)
As a gay guy, I've played a lot of BL VNs, and they tend to be very explicit... sometimes cringingly so.
@@orbalology btw i was able to finally get a copy of xenoblade 3 :). I am so close to being done with this amazing series. Thanks again
@@Mysticalodyssey007 ah exciting! Enjoy!!
It's never-ending 😂
I've been considering the steam deck for similar reasons actually.
Good call. It wouldn’t be a very curated collection if you just bought them all 😄
your skin looks so bright and healthy!!
Buying a game because of a discounted steel book at Best Buy because I can't pass up on - that thought process added many collector's editions to my shelves over the years! xD
Clannad is one of my favourite visual novels of all time, alongside Steins;Gate and 999.
Glad to hear you've been loving TotK too! I'm so hyped for next month with Reverie, haha. Hope you continue to enjoy your pickups as well :)
2:27 I thought you were gonna say FF16 for a second 😅 I forgot were in June now and reverie comes in July 😅
Haha, I'm tempted to pick up FF16 this month too but I don't see myself playing it anytime soon 😅
@orbalology Yeah please consider it to keep things fresh.
I did not know that the Japanese Chrono Trigger is in English, I have been trying to get a copy and it’s just been so expensive.
I did not know Arafell came out already, hate preordering more than one game, delays my entire order 😢
Great video as always Emily!
Thanks Alie! Hope you can pickup the Japanese Chrono Trigger DS on the cheap - it's really a nice alternative that not enough folks talk about these days. I have a few other LRG games still in limbo too, the long waits can really dampen the excitement sometimes 😅
Don't feel bad about giving into FOMO. You are not hurting anyone with your purchases. Do what makes you happy.
While this is true, I usually feel bad about giving into FOMO because it's diverting funds away from things that I would enjoy more. So I've been trying to balance this better :)
FOMO is nothing that makes you happy. On the contrary. It is a sign of unhappiness.
@@orbalology that is reasonable and good to hear 🤘
Great video as always!
You finally got The Liar Princess! I bought Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion from them not long ago
Haha, you sound so ashamed. Don't worry, we've all been there. 😅
I'm actually a bit jealous of your physical Anno Mutationem. It's simple side-scrolling action, as you said, but the pixel art is top notch and the world it paints is really interesting. It isn't too long either, so it's a great palate cleanser, as Derek would say!
Oh I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, so maybe it wasn't too bad of an impulse on my part to pick up a copy 😅
Looking forward to the ps5 unboxing and maybe trails of Rev ones too?👀
Hehe, I may have something in the works for that ;)
Love this video.
I missed the Ara Fell and Rise of The Third Power release and have FOMO now!
You are amazing!
Hey Emily , some nice pickups .
The oled switch is pretty cool .
I buy a lot online and 2nd hand games for ps5 to save money and grow collection of ps5
Chrono Trigger is absolutely a must, very nice 👌🏽
Totally agree Dr. Emily about Zelda. TotK is great but the older more linear style games were still masterpieces. Now there's nothing quite filling that void and may never be again.
Hi emily. Games i got last month:
Chrono trigger ds (us version, so expensive)
Cereza and the lost demon (switch physical)
Atelier sophie 2 (switch physical)
Indivisible (switch physical)
Tales of arise (xbox digital)
Scarlet nexus (xbox digital)
I already had trails from zero, but picked up a copy of trails to azure from VGP. I wasn't paying $100 on eBay, so this was great.
I am keeping an eye out for a mention of suikoden 1&2. Really want that physically to add to my switch collection.
Oh I saw Play Asia make a listing for Suikoden 1&2 remaster, so hopefully we'll get a date sometime soon!
ive probably commented before, but ive had to curb my FOMO big time! i used to buy 95% of rpgs on switch, but there are more releasing than i could ever keep up with, and i get OCD if my backlog gets too out of control. but i have been picking up games im not quite ready for but still want to play eventually, only because of how rare physical can get for switch in just a month.
And I've been hearing a lot of good things about FFIV so I'll be sure to give that one a try as well :)
And yup after getting some of the Trails soundtracks from Japan last month I've been inserting lots of tracks into my video backgrounds 😂
Elysium was an amazing game. one of my favorite platinums, but a huge fomo as i preordered it just for the bestbuy steelbook
Man am I glad I kept my DS version of Chrono Trigger!! And Sonic Collection on DS
