Arma 3 Basic Jet Flight and Combat tutorial

- This is a tutorial for basic take off, landing, flight and combat with jets in arma 3 using mouse and keyboard and all in about 10 minutes. The combat part of tutorial covers using cannons, air to air missiles, air to ground missiles and bombs. A simple way to lock and line up targets and most importantly if you are having trouble it will get you in the sky and able to shoot stuff!

i dont even see anything. i can never tell where enemies are
It can be tough because of how fast the two planes are flying. I recommend keeping an eye on the radar so you have a better idea of where people are.

I would highly suggest orienting yourself with the map to be on a straight approach to the Runway at about 10km away. Make sure the field is in sight at about 3 km
3:46 thats not because of the weight. its because of the increased lift increases the airstream over the wing which slows the plane down.
like a kite would block air to go up so its fighting the air .. so it looses speed

Glad you found it useful. Yes, there is a bit of picking up involved when using the mouse but not much. To get a smooth turn is to turn slowly, just until you see the flight stick (on screen) move as far as it can and then keep that speed. Moving the mouse faster doesn't turn you faster, a smooth slow movement usually works best (and uses less mouse mat!) I generally kept my default sensitivity (so not really super sensitive). I have a G9X logitech, I can adjust on the fly but don't need to.

You know a game is realistic when a basic tutorial is 13 minutes.
You should watch some DCS World tutorials, some of the plane startup videos are twice as long as the basic combat procedures for Arma...
@@dial2616 f-16c startup takes about 10-15 minutes counting with alignment, for the f-18 i'd say 5 mins.

Great video, man. Nice, clear instructions and tips on the general aspects of all the jet has to offer. It would be great to see a more in-depth look at it at some point as well, detailing the workings of the cockpit displays, a more intermediate tutorial on CAS and AA and anything else you deem necessary. I'm swamped at the moment but a friend of mine who likes crunching numbers will be working with me in the not so distance future to get a pretty interesting video up related to some of what you've mentioned and a few other things we see as pretty important when moving from the basics to intermediate. Great video, helped me a lot. I like to pilot helis on Domination and now I can also pilot jets.
Glad it helped, jets are pretty fun and the mechanics for flight work in pretty much all games with 'jet like' controls. You can use the same controls for drones and fly them around too
Really hoping for an advanced dogfighting maneuvers guide.
Deal with things like engaging enemy AA jet on turns, or the maneuvers that will cause you to slow up and they unwittingly get ahead of you

So if you want to lock something on the ground you only have too click right mouse and press t ? Or only click right mouse ?

Very nice and basic tutorial man!
First of all, I recommend that if you wish to fly CAS online, make sure your PC can handle a bit of draw distance on obects. Best thing to do for any new player that wants to be a dedicated pilot is to test your self by setting up some basic targets on a open field, try to be as accurate as possible at a long range and not nose dive too deep towards the target. Then move on to some more challenging enemies like AA artillery & enemy jets. Best to learn how to effectively use flares and avoid gun fire. Then move on to the most challenging part, learn how to use laser-guided missiles, engage enemies deep within town streets, night time CAS (Close Air Support) or AS (Air Supriority).
Also, landing is not easy in ArmA. ArmA's physics are a bit strange when it comes to planes, try to land on the huge sand area on Altis first as you have a huge area to try & do mistakes in. Then move on to the Airfrield where the landing strip is limited.
Note: Also, if you plan to use a joystick, make sure your joystick has enough buttons on it to perform key plane functions such as: Switch weapons, flares, flaps up & down, gear up & down, zoom, eject, fire your weapons and optionally additional plane features that comes with some plane mods. Keeping a steady flight or evading enemies while looking for a key on your keyboard is the difference between a crash and survival.
Flying fixed-wings is one of the parts of ArmA that you have to learn your self and it requires time and patience to get good at it.
+FuzzBall It depends how well you combo it really. Keeping essential plane controls and functions on the stick and less essential on easy to reach keys on the keyboard.
But yes it is possible, with good concentration on the keys you need to press and all the stuff you have to do on the stick. Personally tho, I can't combo like that, after keeping my hands on the throttle and joystick, I lose track of key positions when concentrating on the screen.

Great to the point tutorial! Do you have any tips on using the Mouse to fly? Do you set it up to be super sensitive, or are you constantly picking it up and moving it? I'm used to using a Joystick but can see the advantages to using a mouse in ARMA.

I just got my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for my Arma 3 Apex. Now I really need help setting it up. I'm a disabled Vet, so the flight stick will help me out a lot. Thanks for any help you can provide like a settings map for the flight stick.

YOu mentioned that using your rudders didn't matter much if you are going fast. I would argue with that as they will quickly leave such as in Assault Horizon if you don't. It is just cat and mouse for a long time!!

im having trouble with the hud, im not seeing the green squares indicating ground targets ( or air targets) nor am i seeing laser designator marks. ever had this problem? its frustrating.

I assume that the physical mechanics were in arma 2 as well, that might explain why i haven't hit any target.
This may be far in the past but I'm decent with heli's but want to learn jets so I would be the only one in my group that knows how lol would you be able to help me in game? Also, would having a flight stick help? I currently use mouse for helicopters but might invest in the stick
I fly with joystick since ofp but i don't like the way the jets and helicopters handle in arma 3 it's like there's no weight so small incremiental movements is hard and almost too sensitive

im having an issue where after i map the plane controls, it messes up my hele controls even though im doing it from the plane manouvers drop down.... also, cant get my mouse to control the pitch and roll even after mapping it..... help?

Help! For some reason I cant fly with my mouse. Arma used to have it where you tap the alt key and you can fly with the keyboard. Anyone have an idea what happend?? Its a bit much to manage flying and aiming at the same time. Thank You brothers.
How do you get to zoom out so much in the cockpit? I like the view.
FOV settings, I've my fovTop and fovLeft set to 1.03 and 1.83 respectively for 90 Fov based on a 1920x1080 resolution. You can set these if you go to:(C:\Users\YourWindowsUserName\Documents\Arma 3 - Other Profiles\YourInGameName). Do you have to change the sensitivity on your mouse settings to fly jets? I'm ok at flying jets the problem is when your turning I'm generally pulling the mouse back and back to get it to turn not sure if putting sensitivity up will make it turn faster with little pull back of the mouse?
Slow and steady wins the race, a slow progressive pull is better than fast short ones, so putting sensitivity up isn't going to help much. If you have other buttons on your mouse you might map one of those for pulling hard turns and use the mouse more for aiming. Obviously the best solution is a joystick, but this tutorial is for the standard setup that less hardcore types would have. I have had joysticks in the past but they don't have the longest life span, unless I'm just unlucky (or turn overly aggressively)

I used a custom map for the tutorial, but it is a nice one to practice on (just make sure you get speed up fast with boost as the airfield as a short runway). It is escape for me, if your settings are messed up you can go to documents, arma 3 other profiles, select your profile name (lets say your profile name is hindsgaul) and open hindsgaul.Arma3Profile with notepad. In there CTRL+F look for keyIngamePause[]={1}; based on these set of keycode numbers, community.bistudio.com/wiki/ListOfKeyCodes so 1 represents escape. If that is mapped to something else for any strange reason, then map it to 1 for escape. If that doesn't work, there might be a conflict between some other application and arma using the escape key (for example, photoshop often screws with my escape key if I have it loaded in the background). Hope that helps

It should be G by default, the same as the helicopter
Shift and CTRL are good buttons for throttle. In Warthunder I use the scroll wheel for throttle and [ for flaps up and ] for flaps down and G for Landing gear up and down H I use for air breaks in and out.
i don't get a lock on my targets? i've checked my control stettings and it says i have to press "T" to lock, i tried that and still don't get a lock..? anyone? (yes, I am using AA for air and AG for ground..)

I haven't played in a while, but I linked a simple map in the comments above (Steam workshop) and there are lots of other very well made maps that you can play with maps in single player campaigns out there that you could download too. Nice open skies without people shooting you down is a nice place to start getting familiar with the basics.

Then you are in "free look" mode. Press the "*" key to exit free look mode or go into game options and change it there.

What about the flaps? How do they work?
Cloodden Every plane has landing-flaps. You can raise them with in the normal Menu (where you find all the other thinks like light, gears, eject)
Use flaps on takeoff and landing, it increases your lift but also increases your drag, so you will be more capable of rising in altitude but more susceptible to slowing down. Flaps are generally used at about half extension for takeoff and full extension on landing.

holy fuck that FOV is horrendous. I hope they get rid of the terrible FOV speed link, and the violent shaking during even the most gentle of maneuvers.

TacticalTicTacs I changed it to this settings but when im playing as Infantry i can look with my Weapon like I press ALT and when im hitting the point where in the normal Arma 3 the camara goes for example to the left than at last it goes to the left. I know my english is not the best and this is not good explaned but I hope you can help me.

Oh no not that haha we use the same FOV actually. I was asking about your view distance. What's a good distance for jets?
rhcp117 Ah, I'll have to get back to you on the ones I've used in the video (my PC is at home and right now I'm not in the same country as it!) but my view distance in that video is limited by my PC being quite old (a new one is in the works, I usually by something beasty around a year or two after next gen consoles come out since games seem to benchmark well at around that point). Playing with whatever handles best for your rig is a good idea, getting more view distance trading off for other graphical elements, so you can see objects as far away as possible to line up. As standard people seem to be happy with about 2km for ground combat and 4 to 5km for air. It would be nice if it could change on the fly in the vanilla version.

How do flaps work?
Why should I deploy them? What do they do? Do I use them to land or takeoff or both or just to look cool while sitting in my plane on the runway?
tigerandbuddy listen, I'm crazy late, but here you go. You lower your flaps all the way to get better lift at lower speeds- this can help with landing. I believe also lowering them half way can help you take off, but I'm no expert.
