Dude you helped me A TON!!! :D Before watching your video I always had to land from 200m high with auto hover now, half a year later I'm starting to become a pro pilot! :D
Thanks for an excellent vid, Patchwork. You're a damn good pilot, and a pretty good teacher too. You've helped me realise a few mistakes I'm making when trying to make quick landings, hopefully I'll be better with the help from this vid.
Patchworkᴴᴰ Tried to translate your vid to the heavier heli's (mostly the Huron), but having a few issues due to slower responses with the heavier airframes, especially the fast landings, any pointers?
Or maybe create you own way of landing a heli, instead of following what other professional players do just make up your own landing tricks because everyone has their own skills/tactics.
Just found your channel. Great tips. I'm trying to improve as a pilot inf ArmA3 as I always like the flying aspect of the game. Great tip with the "airframe on either side" to project a mental image of rotor clearance, that was something that I've definitely been struggling with managing.
I’ve noticed lower frames indeed is easier or at least in my opinion. To be fair I am a fairly quirky kind of person and generally what others find harder i find easy and what others find easy I find hard..... like sleeping for god’s sake :d
I can't imagine the spaces next to me... So... I'm always in the "I hope" mode when flying close to objects... But I'm still flying really well... even in tight spaces...
AnthroTsuneon Sorry, because of an editing mistake the colors are indeed reversed. I'm planning on making a 2.0 version of this video since this is indeed a hard concept to grasp and having different wording and new methods couldn't hurt. Alright, if you are asking how to slow down at high speeds without gaining altitude, the best way I can describe it is that you lower collective completely, and then nose up to keep your altitude level. When moving at high speeds and nosing up you will gain altitude much like a plane. When you are lowering collective you will start to descend. To stop yourself from descending into the ground, you should not increase collective, but instead nose up just to the point of stopping yourself from descending. To keep a constant altitude you will need to nose up little by little as your speed decreases. If you raise your nose too much you will still gain altitude, If you don't raise it enough you will lose altitude. You want to find a balance between too much upward nose, and too little. This will give you a constant altitude while also slowing yourself down. A hard turn before a landing is done usually to drop as much speed as possible and is commonly used to counter situations where your speed is too high and about to overshoot a landing. The best way to improve this is just regular practice. If you are just asking for better advice on the staging, I will hopefully make a video soon focusing on this aspect alone. However my handbook has 2 different explanations on how to stage properly just for the reason of this being very, very hard to explain in 1 go. Hopefully this has helped you, and I highly suggest reading the handbook in the description since it has a lot of information relevant to this video.
With only a joystick, you're missing an axis. Some cheaper joysticks have a rotational axis which you can map in place of pedals, but this twist is usually pretty clumsy, and you're placing all three directional axes on one hand. A higher quality joystick without the twist axis, in addition to a set of pedals, will make it easier to coordinate your movements.
for new guys having trouble, change your keybinds, the default is really awkward. I use this: w = increase thrust s = decrease thrust q = pedal left e = pedal right a = rudder left D = rudder right r = lift nose up (I have this so I can turn sharply while also sideways) mouse = all pedals and rudders for fine control hope this helps
aren't the colors on the graphs and the lower right corner reversed? Still, a useful idea but I fail to really grasp the tutorial, like do I descend whilst slowing down or let it glide? At what of an angle roughtly should I tilt backwards? How best to stay stable whilst taking turns during the slowing down?
Ok, i hope you read this, but I would like to know how you do your landings, when you do the diagonal turn right before you land to bleed your speed. Do you add some pedal into that? If so which side? And what is exactly the process in which you do that landing? Thanks for the videos they have helped me very much! I hope you come back to arma with more tutorials!
Shooter339 Nah, I haven't really considered working on the other parts yet. I think as I release flight quick-tips on the topics, I'll make the handbook for them.
I feel like a big part of Arma 3 flying is not always looking at your instruments, you should be able to feel what you need to do and what you are doing.
Hey this is amazing (got yourself another sub) you helped me out a LOT. I was just wondering if you could give me some advice with my style of landing. I have a fine mental image and awareness of my helicopter clearance (I fly an M-900 for recon) and have a pretty good knowledge of safe landing speeds and flexible velocity, yet I can't seem to get my landings quite up to standard. My issue is that I slow down too much, and end up having to continually correct my speed, or else I over/undershoot. Any tips?
+ChestOfDoom Sorry for the late response. Sounds like you are having trouble controlling the oscillation of the helicopter when you transition into a hover. I would try and land with about 10km/h of forward airspeed. 10km/h is safe enough for touchdown, yet you will not enter a hover and have to worry about controlling the oscillations.
This is a problem since i either go fast the whole flight and take forever to lose speed at which point i veer. Or go at a slow speed so i can land easy then get shot down by a jet.
1. tilt sideways (70 degrees, 90 degrees) 2. Stop using the throttle if it's not needed 3. try to spot a landing place you'd want to land 4. get to the correct speed, altitude and have awareness of your surroundings before landing.
It helps, but you dont need any one those, i would consider myself a good pilot, and the people on the server i play on says im the best, and i use only mouse and keyboard.
I'm using TrackIR 5 Head Tracking to look around, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals for my Anti-Torque control, and for a joystick/throttle setup I either use my Saitek X-55 Rhino HOTAS or Xbox 360 gamepad depending how I feel.
You slow down by lifting the nose of your heli up, but at the same time you'll gain altitude, so what you want to do is hold in Z or however your setups is configured, and tilt your nose at an angle where you are slowing down, but not gaining or losing altitude. Can't say I've ever given the angle much thought, you develop a feel for it for each different heli.
Hello Patchwork , I just recently become a ArmA player and I had notice that alot of player what is called vehicle radar now when in too config mine I notice that I don't have that opinion, I have all that you have in your video ( thank you for the video ) except that, is that missing data or do I need earn that options?.
i just ordered the thrustmaster t16000 package and peddals like 5min ago and im wondering if i can look around whit the joystick or do i need to buy that head Track thingy
Patchworkᴴᴰ Oh, ok, and one more question, how do you maintain you altitude to the same level while slowing down? I always end up going up and it taking more time.
cool vid helped a lot but i havenr find any vid that would teach me to reload ammo in some of the armed helicopters cuz every time we shoot out all the ammo we never reload them bcs we dont know it do you know ho to reload helicopter ammo?
i cant fly as good as you but since you have a x55 and i a x52 pro controller, can you tell me how i have to configure the controls? do i have to use analog control for the throttle to increase speed? but i heard it reduce the speed to 50% something like that, id really love to know but thanks for the tips ill try to fly with around 100 km/h and see if i can handle helicopter more easy.
The tip for binding throttle currently is to bind it to "Collective" (Non-Analogue) even though your controller is analogue. "Collective" Non-Analogue will accept analogue inputs just fine and it actually handles analogue input better. If you're flying with the advanced flight model on the devbranch then this does not apply and you should use "Collective [Analogue]". As for a decrease in maximum speed with analogue control over mouse and keyboard, I can confirm this is false. If your interested in seeing how I have my X-55 bound you can check it out here: i.imgur.com/RqUSoE3.png
I know I'm late, but in the off-chance, you are still having this issue the reason for that is because you're landing too quick. The speed + you touching the ground is causing you to bounce.
Well, you don't address anything really that isn't new. Approach stages is not rocket science, as for the tight landings, could have mentioned tips as to when to do exactly what, instead, we saw half the video a demo of how great you are at maneuvering in tight spaces.... Not really a tip besides that it was all common knowledge. I wish you would have addressed how to make Arma pilots that are already mediocre at flying, to do better, but this video does not at all do that.
+Julian Depaepe You also lose full manoeuvrability while landing with auto hover, which can be disastrous if you take anti-air fire and need to abort. Also, a good pilot would be prepared to deploy countermeasures if they get locked up. Don't try to discredit good tactics because you're not familiar with landing without auto hover. Practice.

Tim Still Rapid insertions are not really something heavy airframes are for. Feel free to take your time when landing them.
I've watched this like 100 times and practiced right along with it but I can't seem to get any better.
kinda feeling the same might have too cheap of a joystick
while I can control what i'm doing for the most part, "fluidity" is lacking
@@sixpou You dont control helis with joystick.
Or maybe create you own way of landing a heli, instead of following what other professional players do just make up your own landing tricks because everyone has their own skills/tactics.
Time to go spend a couple hours practicing landing while listening to a podcast. Thanks for the tips m8.

Great tip with the "airframe on either side" to project a mental image of rotor clearance, that was something that I've definitely been struggling with managing.
Not sure if you even see responses to these older videos but this series is very helpful - struggling big time with the heli...
Try these landings at 30 fps koth i dare ya
Its helps its like slow motion
@@njtProductions No it's not? It's the same speed, but It's like you're blinking every second
@@hjarsen7296 Strangely enough it's not really much harder.
lol you would die so fast

This is beautifully made and very clear, thank you!

This guy needs more views.
Hi man. Can you please make a video about the usage of the tail rotor in all aspects of flying a helicopter.
Thanks for the awesome videos!
Great vid. Very well done. GJ
Do you think the pedals are absolutely necessary? How much of an advantage do you think they would give compared to just a joystick?
With only a joystick, you're missing an axis. Some cheaper joysticks have a rotational axis which you can map in place of pedals, but this twist is usually pretty clumsy, and you're placing all three directional axes on one hand. A higher quality joystick without the twist axis, in addition to a set of pedals, will make it easier to coordinate your movements.

I use this:

q = pedal left
e = pedal right
a = rudder left
D = rudder right
r = lift nose up (I have this so I can turn sharply while also sideways)
mouse = all pedals and rudders for fine control
hope this helps
also if you can afford track it, pedals and joysticks, go for it
What do you use though? So smooth of a flight, it looks nothing like being controlled by wasd, rather a precise flightstick...
I know how to make the propeller go faster so I can take off but how the hell do I go down without pointing down. I can't land when I'm hauling ass.

dabom0282 X-55 as well as some saitek pedals. My full setup and accessories can be found on my channel under the "about" tab.
Patchworkᴴᴰ Would you say someone needs these things to be a good pilot?
dabom0282 Not at all. Use what works for you, whether that´s a keyboard and mouse, joystick or a 360 controller. Just use what works for you.
nice vid m8
T.Flight Hotas Stick X. can i use this stick for arma 3
+Tyr0n03 Yeah, that will work fine in Arma 3.
this stick or Logitech Extreme 3D PRO PC Joystick
Tyr0n03 I haven't used either, if it were me though at that price range I'd either look into the T.Flight Hotas, or the Thrustmaster T-16000M.
how are you slowing down I can never do that
A good way to slow down it to point your nose up and hold down allowing you aircraft to slow down and not gain altitude.
when you say down you mean the lower altitiude key right?
+Austin Williams yeah
+Benny Garkusha put your nose put a tiny bit and hold the down collective as you slow tilt you nose more and more upward.
okay thanks
