    had this running in my background. I heard the incoming missile tone and starting spamming my flares

    Funny how a war game for adults actually teaches good information about electromagnetic waves that could be useful to a younger audience. GG

      Arma3 is definitely a great way to get young people into problem solving, team work.

    It took me a while to figure out how to find a target, center a camera on that target, engage the laser, lock a bomb on the laser designated target, and then drop the bomb at the right altitude and distance range to hit the target. Now I'm practicing how to do the whole process faster and faster.
    The first time you drop a laser guided bomb on a target that you are laser designating yourself and watch the bomb make a direct hit is quite satisfying.

    King you have to be joking. Battlefield 4 aircraft game play is just that, gamey. Arma isn't a total flight sim but gives a much better feel without being overly complicated. Some players are not looking for a full flight sim but something fairly close combined with similar ground warfare which is what Arma delivers.

    Honestly flares and chaff are so broken in ArmA, there were so many situations in the video that a heat seeker was following a jet while it was shooting up flares, either the heat seeking tech just jumped up a notch or flares are just there for effects,
    now im not saying ArmA is a flight sim but coming from DCS to this really makes ArmA feel like its one big Battlefield game, hope they fix it sometime
    for example look at 7:44

    • @KIW3Y
      @KIW3Y 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That is pretty realistic. Modern heat seeking missiles fly as straight as possible to the precalculated flight path of the jet in the moment before the heat signal gets messy. Meaning, that if you don't change your flight path after deploying flares or you activate them too late, the missile will still hit you. The game is set in the year 2030 after all.

      I can consistently shake off missile locks with the countermeasures. There have been a few times when the missile made it right through to my aircraft, but I chalk that up more to my crappy flying into the path of the missile than to a fault of the countermeasures. They do work, despite what the video is showing.

    • @LupusAries
      @LupusAries 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed Kiw3y, that's the first thing you learn in any flight sim is to always combine countermeasures with maneuvres.
      Chaffs or Flares confuse the missile they don't magically call it onto them, they only buy you time to maneuver to a position where the missile can't intercept you.
      And there were other tricks, for example if you flew an OCA Strike (Offensive Counter Air Strike=read airfield attack), in Falcon you were always told to come in a slight dive with the engine at idle?
      Why to cool the engine nozzles making you harder to detect.
      Add to that copious ammounts of flares to deal with all kinds of Manpads at that low level.
      Of course try to come in behind a hillside, so they don't know you're there and you get that altitude for a slight dive.
      At 7:44 he kept flying straight instead of immediately maneuvering, at that short range he should've tried to break into the missile to make the intercept harder.
      Yes that is just very short time, but you know how fast one starts to react when you're launched upon and have some experience.
      You hear the warning, and before you even thought about it you have already maneuvered and punched out flares and chaffs.
      And the DCS Flares were at times said to be a bit broken, aka to strong.
      The missile flight dynamics in DCS have also been described as lacking by the guy who made the flight dynamics model for the missiles in the F-14 Tomcat addon.
      Namely the tracking logic and their energy management has come under criticism, namely that they always, even at at long range go maximum turn rate trying to stay on the best intercept course.
      Which means you can "game" the missiles by doing a continuous barrel roll at 20 nautical miles and the missile will try to keep a lead collision itercept course by maneuvering despite you not generating any real offset.
      And a real missile would just have a bias (filter) against that where it would compare range to the maneuvres and say, "Hey he's at 20 nautical miles, not generating any offset, I'm just gonna fly straight!"
      Another problem is that seemingly ED's Rmax definition is one only used by the Russian Air Force, namely that at Rmax the missile stalls when hitting the target, which gives an additional problem in that if another Air Force like the USAF or French Air Force uses a different Rmax definition and you put that Rmax value into your system, you will get invalid results.
      The Interview:
      th-cam.com/video/ma-DkOKGWnI/w-d-xo.html
      As for countermeasures vs Missiles well that has been an tick-tock, some time the missiles are better sometimes the countermeasures are better.
      In the Falklands war the AIM-9L was very successful and they expected the same in the Gulf War of the improved AIM-9M.....however it was less successful, because flare's had improved.

      I know this is old, but if someone wants an answer to this, flares are just to confuse the tracking of an IR missile, you still have to do evasive maneuvers afterwards

      Errrr.... I think not. First, if you're thinking that you can jump off straight on a T-50, grab your RPG, take out a J-20 in the sky, and go back straight to T-50 like nothing happens and call it a "better jet simulator", then your an absoulte dolt, Clay Jensen. Pretty freaking absolute dolt you are.
